Walter Ptasznik, 97, of Erie, died at 2:20 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
He was born June 29, 1922 in Budki, Poland the son of John and Roselia Ptasznik. He grew to manhood in Eastern Poland. In June of 1942 he was taken to a labor camp in Germany, where he was held until 1945. On October 1, 1949 he and his family left Germany to live in St.Paul, Kansas as a refugee family sponsored by Joe O’Brien. He was employed by Joe O’Brien from October 1949 to January 1952. The family then moved to Erie where he was employed by the Neosho County Highway Department from 1952 until his retirement in 1985.
On October 4, 1945 he married Frances Paszek in Ravensburg, Germany. She preceded him in death on October 9, 1992.
He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family.
Survivors include two sons, Kazmier Ptasznik of Wichita, KS and Joseph Ptasznik, of Tulsa, OK; three daughters, Irene Chambers of Clearwater, KS, Helen Harms of Wichita, KS and Rose Mary Hines of Erie, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, son, Theodore Ptasznik on November 6, 1969; three step-sisters and one step-brother, all of Poland.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2019 at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie. The rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., Thursday at the church. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church to sign the register book. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery.
