Virgil Nicholas

Vergil M. Nicholas, Jr., 75, of Erie, passed away at 9:35 a.m., Thursday, August 8, 2019 at his home in Erie.

He was on born on December 22, 1943 at Lawrence, Kansas to Vergil and Carol Ellen (Burke) Nicholas. He grew up on the family farm at rural Erie and attended Erie schools graduating from Erie High School in 1961.

Vergil worked at the Johnson Lumber Company and on the family farm following high school. He owned and operated Star Lanes bowling alley in Erie in the 1980’s. He later worked at the HiLo Cabinet Company in Chanute for many years in shipping and receiving department until his retirement in 2009. He moved to Oskaloosa in 2011 and then back to Erie in 2014.

Vergil enjoyed bowling, farming, drag racing, and mechanical work. He attended the First Christian Church in Erie.








Vergil and Karen Lea Harmonson were married on March 13, 1964 at Erie. They later divorced. He and Peggie Zerby were married on September 6, 1983 at Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on January 9, 2009.

Vergil is survived by his son, David Nicholas, and his wife, Erin of Wichita; his companion, Judy Robinson of the home; his brother, Ernie “Nick” Nicholas of Phoenix, AZ. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at the First Christian Church in Erie.
