Charles Barnes

Charles Allen Barnes 94, of Weir, KS died 11:12am Saturday January 28, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Columbus, KS following an illness.

Allen was born August 2, 1922 in Douglas, NE the son of Charles B. and Ethel M. (Manning) Barnes.

Allen was a veteran of the Navy, serving his country during World War II.
 
On October 5, 1947 Allen married Maggie D. Miller in Frontenac, KS; she preceded him in death on August 24, 2006. Allen worked as an Electronic Engineer for many years for various companies.
Charles was of the Christian Faith; loved to travel, visiting the zoo, museums, art galleries, antiquing, going to the lake, water skiing, senior citizens’ dinners at Weir, KS and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his children Susan J. Haynes and husband John of Shawnee, KS, Joyce A. Nickle and husband Wayne of Winfield, KS and Mark A. Barnes and wife Sue Ann of Weir, KS; grandchildren Jeffrey Haynes, David Haynes, Shawn Thomson, Holly Thomson, Amanda Barnes, Nathan Barnes and great-grandchildren twins Addi and Gracie Thomson.
 
Allen was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 10 brothers and sisters and an infant son Craig A. Barnes.

Funeral Services will be 2:00pm Saturday February 4, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, KS with Pastor Aaron Williams officiating. Burial will follow at 1:00pm Monday February 6, 2017 at the Dunlap Cemetery in Dunlap, KS. Family will receive friends from 1-2:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. Mervin Eddington

Mervin Eugene (Perry) Eddington 84, of Columbus, KS passed away 3:45am Thursday January 26, 2017 at the Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO following an illness. 

Mervin was born August 19, 1932 in McCune, KS to Roy Earl and Marie (Allen) Perry. He was later adopted by John Franklin and Nellie Edith (Everitt) Eddington of Rural Hallowell, KS. Mervin attended Columbus schools and graduated from Columbus High School with the class of 1951.
After leaving high school Mervin stepped in the boxing ring and became the Joplin, MO Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in his light weight division. Then on January 4, 1952 Mervin felt the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army serving 3 years and 3 days of active duty. Mervin served with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. He was in the Division’s Parachute Maintenance Company. Mervin worked on packing, repair and maintenance of personnel and cargo parachutes and aerial supply equipment; loading and securing cargo in aircraft, ejection of cargo in flight and recovering of parachutes and aerial supply equipment. Mervin rose to the rank of Pfc(T) and was decorated with the Parachute Badge and National Defense Service Medal. On January 6, 1955 Mervin left active duty and spent the next 5 years in the United States Army Reserve QMC until January 3, 1960. 

Upon leaving active duty Mervin joined the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers. During Mervin’s years as an Iron worker he traveled around the world erecting radio towers for the United States Air Force and building high rise towers until he was hurt on the job September of 1971. 

In 1973 Mervin moved back to Rural Hallowell, KS with his bride Cleda Detmars (Howell) Eddington who he met and married March 3, 1957 in Emporia, KS. Mervin and Cleda settled on a farm near Hallowell and started farming and ranching. Mervin’s cattle became his pets and he became especially fond of Mabel, April, Wanda, and Orphan Annie. Orphan Annie is still with us and resides at a farm in Oklahoma being cared for by Mervin’s niece Vicki Pribble. 

In April 2013 Mervin now a widower moved to the town of Columbus, KS and took up residence at Autumn Place Apartment 108. 

Mervin is survived by his brothers Melvin Leroy Eddington of Oswego, KS, Marvin Wayne Cline and his wife Dollie of Devore, CA; sister JoAnn Watts of Galena, KS; 3 step-sons James Howell and wife Sylvia of Irmo, SC, Bill Howell and wife Lavern of Irving, TX and Jerry Walthan of Wichita, KS; 13 step-grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins that admired and loved him dearly. 

Mervin was preceded in death by his wife; his biological parents; his adopted parents; brothers Earl Ray Perry and Frederick Emmett Perry; sister Violet Virginia Perry; step-sons Bob Howell and Tommy Howell; step-daughter Martha Tomlinson. 

Per Mervin’s wishes his body is to be cremated and his remains commingled with his wife’s remains and scattered in Cherry Creek in Cherokee County. A memorial and monument will be set at the McCune Cemetery in McCune, KS. Cremation arrangements are under the Direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS.

Laurence Martin

Laurence D. Martin, 86, of Pittsburg, passed away at 1:50 p.m., Monday January 30, 2017, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg. 

He was born July 3, 1930 in Clay Center, Kansas. The son of Laurence T. and Mina (Bletcher) Martin. He graduated from Clay Center High School in 1947. After high school he attended Kansas State University and then graduated from Kansas State Teachers College with his Bachelor’s degree and then his Master’s Degree. Mr. Martin served in the United States Army as a Sergeant First Class during the Korean Conflict. He was Honorably Discharged in 1955. 

On August 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ila Jo Mustard in McCune, Kansas. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2012. Mr. Martin began his teaching career in a one room school house in Clay County, KS. Following his education he taught Math and Science at Roosevelt Junior High School and then at the Pittsburg Middle School. He enjoyed coaching and refereeing basketball and football for many years. He was also involved in real estate and land development in Southeast Kansas. Membership was held in the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg and Pittsburg American Legion Post 64. 

Laurence is survived by three children, David L. Martin (Debra) of Leawood, KS, Rick D.Martin (Lynn) of Pittsburg, KS, and Judy Jo Martin of Overland Park, KS; two sisters, Ruth Tollefson (Kenneth) of Seattle, WA, and Rachael Bailey (Robert) of Spring Arbor, MI; He has five grandchildren, Leslie Martin of Denver, CO, Kacy Martin Lemert (Zach) of Frontenac, KS, Taylor M. Martin (Allissa) of Wichita, KS, Nicholas L. Martin (Ashley) of Teutopolis, IL, and Christopher R.Martin, of Overland Park, KS. He has five greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday (Feb. 3) at the First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Mark Chambers officiating. Private family burial will precede the service at the McCune City Cemetery. Friends may call after 12:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials be given to the First United Methodist Church. Remo Crosetto

Remo Crosetto, 95, of Scammon, KS, died January 26, 2017 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS.
He was born March 30, 1921 in Radley, KS the son of Alex and Rosa Crosetto. He had lived for most of his life in the Scammon area. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1939 and attended the Pittsburg Business College for two years.

Mr. Crosetto was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army.

He married Christine Favero on June 15, 1947 in Scammon, KS. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2007.

Mr. Crosetto worked at the Jayhawk Chemical Plant in Riverton, KS for many years, until his retirement in 1986. The plant was also known previously as Spencer Chemical and Gulf Chemical, when Remo was employed at the plant.

He was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS. Avid hunter, gardener, and trainer of pointer bird dogs. 

Survivors include four nephews Bob Mitchell of Girard, Don DeGruson of Kechi, KS, Darin DeGruson of Spring Valley, Wisconsin and Jim Mitchell of Frontenac, one niece Debra White of Olathe, KS and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Christine, parents, one brother Al Crosetto, two sisters Bea Mitchell and Jean Crosetto.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am Monday, January 30, 2017 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS with Father Jeremy Huser, as celebrant. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. The Kansas Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team will conduct military rites at the graveside. The parish rosary will be recited at 7 pm, Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon. The family will receive their friends after the rosary service at the church. Willie Campbell

Willie Juanita (Beavers) Campbell 89, of Pittsburg, KS died 10:05pm Wednesday January 25, 2017 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS following an illness. 

Willie was born June 12, 1927 in Advance, AR the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Clark) Beavers. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Advance Arkansas Schools before moving to Pittsburg, KS. 

On August 30, 1944 Willie married Herman Campbell in Kansas City, KS; he preceded her in death on February 3, 1970. Willie in her early years was known as a housewife but later worked as a Certified Nurse's Aide at Mt. Carmel Hospital and other various nursing homes in the area.
Willie was baptized in the Church of God; she loved to crochet, fish, garden and trapping rabbits. Family and most of all her grandkids were the most important things in her life.
Survivors include her children Judy McCabe and husband Donald of Emporia, KS, Ruth Jean Kolb-Campbell of Pittsburg, KS, Loretta Maynard of Marshfield, MO, Robert Campbell and wife Rhonda Kay of Blanco, OK, Kathie Thomas of Pittsburg, KS, Roger Campbell and wife Connie of Cedar Park, TX, Jeffrey Campbell and wife Chona of Pittsburg, KS and Jacob Campbell of Pittsburg, KS; brothers Arlan Beavers of Wichita, KS and Ronnie Beavers of Buffalo, MO; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Willie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and grandchildren John L. Thomas Jr., Christopher Thomas, Kenneth Wayne Campbell, Penny Denise Browne and Baby McCabe.

Treva Gray

Treva Littrell Gray was born March 18, 1929 at Ozro, KS. to parents Ordie C. Littrell and Flora Edna McCall Littrell. Treva grew up in Cedar Vale, KS where she attended school and graduated from Cedar Vale High School, Class of 1948. She was active in high school and loved being in plays. She worked as a cashier at Adams Grocery Store. Growing up she had pet lamb and loved animals. She married George A. Carter on May 14, 1948 and of this union were two daughters, Gwen and Joyce. The couple later divorced and in September 1986 she married Fred Gray. The couple resided in Neodesha, KS but traveled the entire United States, along with, Mexico and Canada. The couple later moved to Eufaula, OK where they enjoyed their home on the lake. They then moved to Columbus where they enjoyed gardening and spending time with family.

Treva had many talents including sewing and playing the piano. She made countless clothes for her daughters and grandchildren. She made doll clothes and many other crafting projects. Her love of music showed in the collections of records and her ability to sit down and play a tune on the piano. She put that talent to use as the piano player at her church in Eufaula. Treva was a talented cook and loved to entertain, enjoyed the moments she could use her much loved dishes. She was always a hard worker and held positions of dental assistant and insurance clerk for a medical office.

Treva loved her cats and they loved her.

Her husband preceded her in death along with her parents and brother, Richard Littrell. Treva is survived by daughters Gwen Martin, husband Neil, of Columbus, KS and Joyce Kay Wright, husband Ralph, of Chanute, KS. Granddaughter Mandy Martin Andris, husband Tim, of Bluejacket, OK, Grandson Nick Martin, wife Christina, of Baxter Springs, KS. Grandson Nathan Wright, wife Savannah, of Kansas City, MO. Sister-in-law Joyce Littrell of Cedar Vale, KS. Two nieces Michelle Kelley, husband Pat, of Cedar Vale, KS and Tera Cox, husband Whitney, of Arkansas City, KS. She was blessed with 10 great-grandchildren and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Monday, January 30, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Gary Yurk will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, rural Columjbus, KS.

Martha Rowton

Martha Carolyn Rowton, age 90, of Columbus, Kansas, passed away the morning of January 26, 2017, at Medicalodge.

She was born February 16, 1926 to Henry Edward and Zela Chasteline (Carroll) King, in Brundidge, Alabama. Carolyn married Raymond R. Rowton on June 25, 1943 in Brundidge, before moving to the Columbus area shortly after their marriage. He preceded her in death July 1, 1992, and she remained in Columbus, living in the area for just over 70 years. She worked as a seamstress for the Garment Factory; also acting as owner and operator of the City Café in Columbus with Raymond, a business that they ran for nearly four years together. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus, The Eastern Star, Legion Auxiliary, and the Rebekahs. Every morning she would go to the restaurant to drink her coffee, and enjoyed making crafts, specifically crafts for the Elmaker girls.

Carolyn is survived by her three daughters: Rosa Schmidt (husband Ed) of Oswego, Kansas, Raye Clark (husband John) of Columbus, Kansas, and Faye Rowton of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 12 great great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Rupert King and Edward King; and one sister: Joet Connell.

Pearl Zook

Pearl Imogene (Kelley) Zook, 93, of Columbus, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Medicalodges of Columbus.

Born May 31, 1923 in Monarch (Treece), Pearl was the daughter of George Matson and Dona Belle (Williams) Kelley. Pearl started school at the age of four at Star school in Baxter Springs. When the family moved to Columbus, she attended first grade at Wyandotte School. She attended Central School and Cherokee County Community High School. She was a good athlete and was the only girl to play on the boys softball team. They called her “Kelley” so the team they were playing would not know they were playing against a girl. She pitched and played third base.

At the age of 18, Pearl moved to Michigan, where she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” in an airplane factory during World War II.

Pearl and Elmer John (EJ) Zook were united in marriage May 2, 1943 in Ariton, Alabama. EJ was stationed at Fort Rocker, Alabama. He preceded her in death April 16, 1993.
After EJ was discharged from the service the couple moved back to the Columbus area.
They farmed together for many years, before Pearl went back into the work force. She worked at Berry Garment Factory in Columbus and then in Oswego. She also worked for Coons camper factory in Oswego before joining the team at Cameo in Columbus. During her final years of her working years she worked at Ace Electric in Columbus.
Pearl put her family first and was very involved with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She cared for her grandchildren well into her seventies. She loved playing dominos and cards with her grandchildren.

Pearl was always an active person. She enjoyed coaching and sometimes playing on the Rockets girls’ softball team in Columbus. She also was on several bowling teams in Columbus. Working puzzles was one of her passions. After moving to the Grand Villa, several people would bring her puzzles to put together for them so they could frame them as artwork.

In addition to her husband, EJ, Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, son John Edwin (Johnny), daughter Janice Marie (Zook) Walker, grandsons Tracy Gene Walker and Cory Zook.
Also preceding her in death were her brothers Ernest, Willis, James (Jimmy), Floyd and Albert Kelley, sisters Hazel Stephens, Ruby Garland, Florence Fruit, Dona Lora Black and two infant sisters Velma and Ida.
Pearl is survived by her daughter JoAnn Tash, of Hollister, Mo., granddaughters Alicia Mallatt, of Riverton, Lori Robbin, Hollister, Mo., Julie Blackwell, Branson, Mo., Shannon Davis, Monett, Mo., Amy (Walker) Storm, Danyele Payne and grandson Mitchell Mitchell. She is also survived by her brother George Leslie Kelley, of San Jose, Calif., sister Thelma Kelley Rocky, state of Illinois, many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces Sharon Hiatt and Donna Martin both of Columbus and other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Saturday, January 28 at 11 a.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery. Pastor Jim Rumble, of the Macedonia Baptist Church officiated. Pallbearers were Jared Robbins, Josh Keeton, Rob Robbins, Richard Blackwell, William Mallatt and Ray Kelley.

Arthur Buffalo

Arthur Robinson Buffalo Jr., age 66 of Miami, OK passed from this life on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO surrounded by his family.

Arthur was born on September 11, 1950 in Miami, OK to the union of Arthur and Pauline (Clarkson) Buffalo. Arthur graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1968. Arthur worked for National Gypsum as a panel operator in Medicine Lodge, KS before returning back home. He was united in marriage to Joyce Ann (Stephenson) Buffalo on February 22, 2012 in Miami, OK. Arthur was a member of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Terry Milliard; and one son, Jason P. Buffalo.

Arthur is survived by his wife Joyce Ann Buffalo of the home; two sons, Arthur J. Buffalo and wife Courtney of Newton, KS and Aron E. Buffalo and wife Amanda of Newton, KS; one daughter, Jennifer L. Mueller and husband Kenneth of Newton, KS; four step daughters, Lynette Steeby and husband John of Parsons, KS, Dianna Lange and husband Dan of Kansas City, Shellie Snyder and husband Charles of Miami, OK, and Kristi George and husband Tommy of Ft. Scott, KS; one adopted son, Aaron Wade Buffalo; one brother, Lloyd Buffalo and wife Luann; six sisters, Dorothy Cantrell and husband Harry, Beverly Jones, Cheryl Williams, Pat Weaver and husband Mike, Maggie Buffalo-Vanhorn and husband Roy, and Roberta Mitchell and husband Jerry; twenty grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the Quapaw Tribal Long House. Pastor Geoff Buffalo will officiate. Arthur will lie in state from Sunday evening until service time on Tuesday at the Long House. Burial will be in the Quapaw Tribal Cemetery. Janice Houk

Janice E. Houk, age 68, passed away on January 27, 2017 following a lengthy illness.

Janice was born December 22, 1948 in Roseland, KS, the daughter of the late Tony and Ruth (Lanning) Begando. She moved to Joplin in October of 2016, moving here from Columbus, KS where she had lived most of her life. She worked at the Adams Five and Dime store in downtown Columbus and then became a beautician for a short period of time. She then worked as a receptionist at the Columbus (Mercy) Medical Clinic for several years, and ended her career as the City Clerk for the City of Columbus. Janice was a member of the Sherwin Christian Church in Sherwin, KS. She was active in the Grace for the Journey Cancer support group at the First Christian Church in Columbus.

Janice married Stephen Houk on July 25th, 2013 and he survives. Additional survivors include her son, Terry Blancett of Columbus, KS; a step son, Stephen Houk Jr and his wife Rachel of Gross Point, MI; two brothers, Tom Begando of Columbus, KS and Charles Begando of Weir, KS; two sisters, Margaret Paradee of Columbus, KS and Sarah Anderson of Tulsa, OK, and two step grandchildren, Thadeous and Margaret. She was preceded in death by two brothers; Richard (Dick) and Antone (Toot) Begando and one sister, Norma DePratt.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 am Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Dennis Johnson and Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Stone Cemetery, west of Diamond, MO.
The family will receive friends at the Mortuary from 6 pm to 7 pm Tuesday evening.
Contributions can be made to The Sherwin Christian Church in care of the Mortuary.

Kay Lawson

Mary Katherine "Kay" Lawson, age 86 of Baxter Springs, Kansas, went to be with her heavenly Father on Thursday, January 26, 2017.

Kay was born December 24, 1930 in Neosho, Missouri to the late Curtis C. Ground, Sr., and Edna I. Lilies Ground. She was one of the founders of the Silver Follies in Neosho and was very active with the group for many years. Kay was a very gifted artist and writer. She was also involved in the Founding of The Neutral Land Cherokee in Baxter Springs. Kay loved getting on her lawn mower and just riding. She loved sitting on the dock and fishing for catfish.

Kay and Al Lawson were married in 1955 and had three sons together, Monty, James and Richard. A fourth son, Tony was adopted when he was a small child. Al preceded the family in death in 1987.

Additionally, Kay was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Monty Lawson and Tony Lawson; brothers, Curtis Ground, Jr. and John Ground.

Kay and Ray Golden were joined in a union on March 18, 1992 in Neosho. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, James Lawson and wife, Betty of Quapaw, Oklahoma; brother, George Ground of Wichita, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren; 4 step children, 8 step grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren.

A visitation with family and friends will take place on Saturday, January 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary. Kay will be taken for cremation following the visitation.

Josie Nettels, 90, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital. 

She was born, Mary Joanne Meyer in Great Bend, Kansas on December 2, 1926, to Grace and Allen Meyer. Josie attended the University of Kansas and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She later became a flight attendant with TWA before meeting George Nettels at the Teepee in Lawrence, Kansas, on a blind date. 

Josie was united in marriage to George in July 1952. They have four children, Chris Nettels (Angelyn), Meg Lindsey (John), Kate Faerber (John) and Becky Sloan (Steve). She is survived by eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Josie was a Pink Lady at Mount Carmel Hospital and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was known of her love of the ocean and her collection of sea shells. She was a devout Catholic, wonderful, loving wife and raised her family well. 

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pittsburg, KS, with Father Michael Baldwin as Celebrant. Private Family Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., Friday, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund. Donna S. Darland, 86 of Pittsburg, formerly of McCune, KS, died Monday, January 23, 2017 at Oak View Estates in Frontenac, KS.

She was born October 6, 1930 in McCune, KS the daughter of Arthur and Janie (Mobley) Mullen.

She was married to Billy Verne Darland, Sr. they later divorced.

Donna was a member of the McCune Methodist Church for many years.

She was a homemaker and also worked at Carrington and Vintage Place in Pittsburg in food service.

Survivors include two daughters: Kim Clausen of Cherokee and Karla Williams of Pittsburg; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Billy Verne Darland, Jr., three sisters: Doris Halcomb, Jane Hooke, Gloria Wiscomb and a brother Pete Mullen.

Services will be 10am Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home with Alex Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the McCune City Cemetery. Phyllis Sanders

Phyllis Sanders, age 86 of Neck City, Missouri passed away Sunday January 22, 2017 following a decline in health.

She was born July 7, 1930 in Pontiac, Michigan to Bert and Nina (Petefish) Silvey.

Phyllis graduated from Alba High School in Alba, Missouri. She married Herman “Doc” Sanders in August, 1949 and had four children before divorcing in 1979.

She is survived by two sons, Randy Sanders and wife Marcia, Van Buren, Arkansas, Rod Sanders and wife Jane, Joplin, Missouri; two daughters, Rhonda Snyder and husband Wayne, Neck City, Missouri, Ragena Snyder and husband Duane, Neck City, Missouri; three sisters, Helen Johnston, Mablemount, Washington, Eileen Toepfer, Baxter Springs, Kansas, Carol Jelinek, Carthage, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Matt Sanders, Adam Sanders, April Brann, Sheba Cook, Nikki Mayfield, Jennifer Waggoner, Zach Snyder; six great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Phyllis was preceded in death by one brother, Buford Silvey; four sisters, Jean Pierce, Luella Ferris, Norma Koehler, Janie Silvey; two grandchildren, Brian Snyder and Cody Sanders.

Phyllis retired from Big Smith Manufacturing in Carthage, Missouri where she worked as a seamstress. She was a long time member of the Church of God (7th Day) in Joplin, Missouri where she was a “door greeter” for many years. She loved meeting people, visiting shut ins, singing and going on trips.



Memorial services will be held at the Church of God (7th Day) 2225 N. St. Charles Avenue, Joplin, Missouri at 2:15 pm on Saturday February 18, 2017.

Margaret Cobaugh

Margaret Ann Cobaugh, 78, passed away Friday, January 20, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Margaret was born September 19, 1938 in Erie, Kansas to John Henry Tipping and Minerva Elizabeth “Huffman” Tipping. She was a lifetime resident of Carthage and a homemaker.

Margaret is survived by three sons: David Finley of Diamond and wife Pam, Bert Finley and John Tipping, both of Carthage; three daughters: Margaret Ann Wooldridge of Carthage, Carol Cobaugh and Barbara Finley , both of Diamond; and one sister, Lottie Bass and husband Mason, Jr. of Columbus, Kansas and a “slew” of grandkids.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, one sister Amy Madl and two brothers John W. Tipping and Dwight “Buck” Tipping.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Jasper Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Albert Elmer Eby of Republic, MO passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at his home. He was 81.

Albert was born March 22, 1935 in Peoria, OK to Elmer Lee and Nellie (McMinn) Eby. He had lived in Republic over 40 years moving from Baxter Springs, KS. Albert was a truck driver for Yellow Freight.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bill Dale Eby and a sister Judy Schoenhals.
He married Nancy Sue (Hood) Eby, August 1962 and she survives of the home. Additional survivors include 5 sons Stephen Eby of Republic, MO, Jeffrey Eby of Chadwick, MO, David Scott Eby of Republic, MO, Russell Duane Eby of Fordland, MO and Roger Allan Eby of Springfield, MO, a brother Paul Eby of Quapaw, Ok and 2 sisters Ruth Imbeau of Quapaw, OK and Wanda Castagno of Weir, KS , 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Rev. Sandy Stallings

Rev. Sandy D. Stallings, 73, of Pittsburg, died January 20, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, of a sudden illness.

He was born January 9, 1944 in Amarillo, TX the son of Lloyd and Louise Hughes Stallings. He had been a resident of Pittsburg since 2000, moving from Springfield, MO. He graduated from the Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO with his Bachelor of Science degree in 2000.
He was an honorably discharged United States Marine Corp veteran, serving with the 3rd Anti-Tank Company.

He married Winnie Juanita Pryor on November 16, 1964 in Andrews, TX. She survives at the home in Pittsburg.

Rev. Stallings served as the clergyman at the Liberty Baptist Church in Pittsburg since 2000. Prior to entering the clergy he owned and operated the V & S Sandblasting Company in Denver City, Texas.
Membership was held in the Liberty Baptist Church in Pittsburg, KS.

Survivors in addition to his wife Juanita of the home include, one son Donivan Aaron Stallings of Knox City, TX, two daughters Sandra Sue Henderson and her husband Steve of Andrews, TX and April Joy Braun and her husband Jason of Pittsburg, KS, one sister Sherian Dixon of Paris, TX, one brother Stanley Stallings of Odessa, TX, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Sidney Stallings.

Memorial services will b e 2:30pm, Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, KS with Brother James Lyman, officiating. On April 14, 1952 she was united in marriage to Charles F. “Bud” Smith he preceded her in death on November 5, 2011.

Charlene was a homemaker and a member of the Frontenac United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter Melody A. (Larry) Pugh of Pittsburg, a son Charles Jeff (Rhonda) Smith of Lockwood, MO; a brother Gene Nenno of Oklahoma City, OK, a sister Barbara Sheppard of Colorado Springs, CO; along with seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Charles Emil “Dick” Simpson, Jr., 96 of Columbus, KS passed from this life on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Mercy Maude Norton Hospital, Columbus, KS.

Dick was born on December 2, 1920 to the union of Charles Emil Simpson Sr., and Evelyn V. (Montgomery) Simpson. Dick was united in marriage to Nellie Irene (Coble) Simpson in Girard, KS in December of 1941. At a very young age Dick began farming and raising cattle, and he continued with his dream up until his passing. Dick was baptized at the First Christian Church in Columbus, KS, where he was a member.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Robert Simpson; one great grandchild, Ian Qualls.

James DeGraffenreid

James Franklin DeGraffenreid, age 79 of Grove passed away on January 21, 2017 at 6:22 PM.

James was born on January 6, 1938 to the union of Elmer Donald DeGraffenreid and Viola Beatrice (Fry) DeGraffenreid. He attended high school in Galena, KS until his junior year, when he transferred to Fontana High School in California, where he graduated. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict, and was also stationed in France.

James worked in the maintenance department for Doane’s Food Plant in Galena before retiring in the late 1990’s. He was a member of Empire Mission Church where he enjoyed being “the candy man”. James moved to Grove one year ago, and was an active member in the Grove Senior Citizens Center, where he was awarded the title of “Top Volunteer” for helping all of the other attendees. He enjoyed fishing, and had recently found a love for crafting decorative crosses that he made out of tree bark, rocks, and other items from nature. His greatest hobby was being a dad to his children.

James was married to Sarah (McCoy) DeGraffenreid Bowman, the mother of his children, on November 2, 1967. They later divorced. She preceded him in death on June 8, 2016. He later married Rose (Hart) DeGraffenreid on December 26, 1991. She preceded him in death in 2005.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Viola; one son, Donald DeGraffenreid; and one daughter, Donna Bowers.

Survivors include one son, Michael DeGraffenreid of Galena; three daughters, Jody Roher (husband, Lewis) of Grove, Marilyn Anderson (husband, James) of Galena, and Gail Elliott (husband, Greg) of Pryor, OK; two step daughters, Patty Decow of Kingman, AZ, and Eva Hart of Wichita, KS; two sisters, Diane Brand of Galena, and Pat Stansberry (husband, Clyde) of Galena; a very special cousin, his buddy Norman Fry; as well as 22 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Allen Comstock

Allen Benson Comstock age 43, of Arcadia, Kansas passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Ellensburg, Washington to John Comstock and Stella Wilson. Allen was an inspector of water towers for many years before his illness would no longer let him continue to work. 

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hughes Comstock of the home; daughter, Crystal Jeanette of Duenweg, Missouri; sisters, Stella Pinkey of Stark, Kansas, Mary Jameson of Columbus,Kansas, Raylynn Painter of Arcadia, Kansas; and his father, Bennie Rice of Arcadia, Kansas. Allen was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanitta Lassiter, his mother, and his biological father.

Vaughn Durfee

Vaughn “Buster” Maurice Durfee, Jr. 71, of Columbus, KS died at 5:06 am, Wednesday January 18, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Columbus.

Vaughn was born April 7, 1945 in Crawford, CO the son of Vaughn and Ethel (Horton) Durfee.

On March 15, 1969 Vaughn married Geraldine Johnston in St. Francis, KS.

Buster worked as a dairyman in Idaho, Oregon and Colorado. He worked several years at Delta Hardware in Delta, Colorado and then as a truck driver for various companies. His final job before retiring was at GW Hardware in Woodburn, Oregon.

He was a longtime member and past president of the Lions Club in Delta, CO.

Buster made friends everywhere he went and never met a stranger.

Survivors include his wife Jerry of Columbus; children Millie Copper of Powell, WY, Nellie Dempsey of Miami, OK, Kellie Chandler and Richard Durfee both of Grove, OK, Kendra Declue of Wellington, FL; brothers Hal Durfee of Delta, CO, Roy Durfee of Gold Beach, OR, Jess Durfee of San Diego, CA; 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Martha V. Back 99, of Hallowell, KS died 8:45am Wednesday January 18, 2017 at her home following a short illness. 

Martha was born February 9, 1917 in Duenweg, MO the daughter of Virgil and Ina (Proll) Hutchens. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Hallowell schools.
On August 4, 1941 Martha married Lonnie Back in Columbus, KS; he preceded her in death on September 16, 1992. 

Martha enjoyed cooking for her family and caring for her flowers.

Ray McBride

Ray Ernest McBride, Jr. age 87, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, with his wife and children by his side. Ray was born August 31, 1929 in Columbus, Kansas to Ray and Flossie (Crowder) McBride. He attended school in Columbus, Kansas and graduated from Cherokee County Community High School with the class of 1949. He and Betty Sandella were married April 24, 1954 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, Kansas, and spent nearly 63 years together. He was a lifetime resident of Columbus, except for eight years spent in Topeka, Kansas.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the Battleship USS Iowa BB 61 in the Korean waters during the Korean conflict. He was a former employee of Junge’s Baking Company of Joplin, Missouri, Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Pittsburg, Kansas, and Vickers Hydraulic plant in Joplin, Missouri, where he worked for 25 years as a machinist until the plant closed in 1987. Upon closing of the plant, he was asked by Vickers to go to the company’s Statesville, North Carolina plant, where he spent six months to set up specialty machines and train personnel on their use.

He and his wife Betty moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1991 where he went to work for the Kansas Dept. of Revenue until retiring due to his medical health in 1998.

Ray and his wife Betty owned and operated McBride Concessions. A business they owned for 27 years (their night time job), serving students and the public at the Columbus High School ballgames and track meets. They also operated a concession stand each year during the Cherokee County Fair. One of his fondest memories was giving babies their first taste of cotton candy.

Ray was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church of Columbus. He was a 66 year-member of the Columbus American Legion Post #3, and a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars of Columbus, Post #1372.

He is survived by his spouse Betty, daughter Ruth and son-in-law Mike Hall of Olathe, Kansas, Son Wesley Ray and daughter-in-law Pam McBride of Sherman, Texas. Two granddaughters Kimberly McBride of Krum, Texas, and Jennifer McBride of Sherman, Texas, and one grandson Matthew Hall of Kansas City, Missouri. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and he enjoyed every minute he spent with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Flossie McBride, brother Wesley V. McBride of Savannah, Georgia, and sister Juanita (McBride) Ness of Kansas City, Missouri.

Burial is under the direction of the Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus. Rosary will be held at the funeral home Friday January 20, 2017 at 7:00 PM. The family will meet friends following the rosary. Burial mass will be at St. Rose Catholic Church Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Father Jeremy Huser will officiate. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Columbus.

Norman Long

Norman L. Long, 77, long time Arma resident, died January 17, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS.

He was born March 16, 1939 in Mulberry, KS the son of James and Dorothy Whetzell Long. He was a Mulberry High School Graduate and attended Kansas City Kansas Community College for one year.

Mr. Long was a Vietnam Era Veteran, serving in the US Army, stationed in Germany.
He married Grace Elizabeth Klimek on October 11, 1989 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives at the home in Arma, KS.

He was the service manager for the Hudson Oil Companies, until his retirement.
Mr. Long was a Jehovah’s Witness and a member of Kingdom Hall in Pittsburg, KS.
Survivors include his wife Grace of the home in Arma, one daughter Lisa Crites (Gene) Marshall, TX, three sons John Long (Chrystal) Pittsburg, Scott Long of Liberal, MO, and Jeff Long (Laurie) of Liberal, MO, a step-daughter Kimberly Stark (Shawn) Girard, KS, three sisters Mavis Willey (Pete) Mulberry, KS, Sharon Mitchell of Oklahoma City, and Freda Pallucca of Kansas City, MO, two brothers Ron Long (Bev) of Liberal, MO and Robert Long of Mulberry, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Harold Long.

Lorene Louise Zaccarello 94, of Columbus, KS died 7:45pm Sunday January 15, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Columbus, KS following an illness. 

Lorene was born October 11, 1922 in Turck , KS the daughter of Oscar and Louise (Cowsill) Scott. Lorene was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Columbus High School in 1940.
On November 14, 1945 Lorene married Frank Zaccarello at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS; he preceded her in death on June 14, 2016. 

During WWII Lorene worked at the Garment Factory in Columbus, KS and later Doty’s Grocery Store and McGee Drug Store in Columbus, KS. 

Lorene was a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church in Columbus, KS; Ladies Auxillary VFW; was a Pittstate Football Fan and Columbus Titans athletics supporter. 

Survivors include her son Mike Zaccarello and wife Sandy of Sapulpa, OK; grandchildren Cassie Gilman, Michelle Holdgrafer and Tammy Chambers; 5 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Jamie Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis, age 23, passed away at 7:19 pm, Friday, January 13, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, KS following a sudden illness.

Jamie was born September 27, 1993 in Pittsburg, KS. His parents were James W and Jennifer L (Harper) Curtis. He had lived in Weir most of his life.
He graduated from Southeast High School, Cherokee, KS with the Class of 2012. He was employed at RAHE Construction as a foreman, a job he had held for 5 years. He had also worked a year at the Cherokee County Law Enforcement Center, Columbus, KS.

Jamie served the City of Weir as Fire Chief, a position he had held since 2014. He has been a member of the Weir Fire Dept. since 2011. He was also a member of the Fire Fighters Association in Emporia, KS. He enjoyed fishing. His greatest joy was caring for his two sons.

Jamie was married to Autumn Dusk Reagan on May 4, 2013 in Weir, KS. She survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Gunner Curtis and Gavin Curtis, both of the home; his father, James Curtis, Weir; his mother, Jennifer Gibson (husband, Terry), Lewis, KS; two brothers, Josh Reynolds, and Woody Reynolds, both of Lewis; two step-brothers, Garrett Gibson, Lewis, and Brier Martin, Columbus; one step-sister, Felicia Ward (husband, Thomas), Lewis; and his grandfather, Don Curtis, Weir.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, January 20, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus. Aaron Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Hosey Hill Cemetery, Weir.

Doris Maxine Waggoner Oleson, age 95, passed away at 5:28 pm on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Country Angels Nursing Home in Baxter Springs, KS.

She was born in Medford, OK to Mary Sophia Callagy Carrothers and Franklin Melvin Waggoner.

She was a graduate of Belle Plaine High School and Southwestern College, Winfield, KS. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Belle Plaine and was active in several civic organizations. She was a retired school teacher, church secretary and also worked part time at the M&M Grocery Store in Belle Plaine for nearly 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband A.O. “Bud” Oleson, a brother, Eugene Carrothers and wife Wanita, a sister, Margaret Hardesty, a half brother Melvin Waggoner and his wife Grace.

She is survived by a son, Steven Oleson, Bellevue, Washington, a daughter, Sue Commons and husband Randy of Baxter Springs, KS, a half brother Ted Waggoner and wife Mary of Belle Plaine, KS., a grandson Chris Oleson and wife Jennifer, Kenmore, Wa., a granddaughter Kim Oleson and husband Bob Beymer, North Bend, WA, a granddaughter Amber Stinnett and husband Earl, Joplin, MO, a grandson Arthur Commons and wife Erin, Baxter Springs, KS., and a granddaughter Aril Brizendine and husband Matt of Lenexa, KS., great-granddaughters Courtney Stinnett, Kenzie Stinnett, Lydia Commons, Ivy Commons, Ainsley Oleson, Elsa Oleson and great-grandsons Phillip Stinnett, Nolan Commons, Gunnar Beymer, Finn Oleson, Jackson Beymer and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Tom Poznich

Thomas “Tom” Paul Poznich, Sr., 65, of Pittsburg passed away at 7:15 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2017 at his home.

He was born July 20, 1951 at Pittsburg, the son of Paul Edward and Juanita Ann (Quarton) Poznich. He attended Weir grade school and graduated from Southeast High School in 1969. 

On November 24, 1972, he was united in marriage to Linda Kay Forbes at Countryside Christian Church in Pittsburg. While they were dating, he attained his pilot’s license, flying for several local businesses for a total of forty-five years. For the last 20 years, he has been the Chief Pilot for Miller’s Professional Imaging. Membership was held in the Masonic Lodge No. 274 of Weir, Scottish Consistory of Fort Scott, Mirza Shrine of Pittsburg and the Kent Chapter #117, Order of Eastern Star of Weir. 

He is survived by his wife, Linda Poznich of the home; two sons, Thomas Paul Poznich, Jr and his wife, Kari of Gardner, KS and Joshua Alan Poznich and companion Kandris Toth of Pittsburg; seven grandchildren, Korbin, Jackson, Grant, Kennedy, Blakeslee, Lexi, and Kara; and two brothers, Charles Robert Poznich of Miami, OK and George Alan Poznich of Weir. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday (Jan. 24) at the First Church of the Nazarene, Pittsburg with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Private family interment of the cremains will be at a later date. She was a CNA at Golden Living Center for 30 years. Her passion was caring for others and spending time with her kids. Elizabeth was an active member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents.

Henry Wilson Owens, age 64, Galena, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at his home with family at his side.

Henry was born June 18, 1952 in Spring City, Missouri, son of the late Samuel Luther Owens and Emma May Fawver Owens. He attended school in Spring City, and moved to Galena in 1982. He worked all his life as either an auto mechanic or in construction, mainly as a drywall hanger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence, Clifford, Bill, Lawrence, and Chester, and a sister, Francis McCammon.

Survivors include his wife, Delores D. Owens whom he married April 8, 1977; sons, Henry Wilson Owens, II, Hank Owens and wife Stephanie all of Galena; daughters, Tina Jones of Galena, Tammy Adu and husband Solomon of Springfield, Missouri, Lorie McCammon and husband Martin of Ozark, Missouri; brothers, Jack Owens and wife Sue, Herbert Owens and wife Barbara all of Granby, Missouri; sister, Vera Johnston and husband Marvin of Joplin; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Monday, January 16, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Bob Winnett officiating. Interment will follow in Kenney Cemetery with Cord McCammon, Martin McCammon, III, Martin McCammon IV, Craig Owens, Joshua Cooper and Harley Cooper serving as pallbearers.

Neil Knapp

Neil O. Knapp, 80, of rural Pittsburg, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2017 at his home. 

He was born November 10, 1936 at Pittsburg, the son of Doyle O. and Elinor (Wilkinson) Knapp. He attended Pittsburg High School and graduated from College High. 

It was at College High where he met the love of his life, Shirley Selby. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. Mr. Knapp worked for Westar as an Agent in McCune until he retired. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Knapp and a daughter, Debbie Phillips. Mr. Knapp’s daughter, Kristi Canfield passed away a few hours after her father on Wednesday.

James Arlin Vaughn, 70 of Pittsburg, formerly of Parsons, KS died at 5:15 am, Monday January 9, 2017 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.

He was born February 19, 1946 in Kansas City, KS the son of James Criss and Ella Mae (Gaignat) Vaughn.

James was a self employed residential carpenter for over 30 years.

He was a former member of the First Assembly of God Church in Parsons.

Survivors include two daughters: Kim Haviland and Janet Brewer both of Parsons, a son Darin Vaughn of Cherryvale, KS, mother Ella Mae Vaughn of Parsons; step-son: Kelly Thompson of Pittsburg and step-daughter: Abby Buck of Girard, KS; a special friend and caregiver Connie Vaughn of Girard, three nephews Bryan, Jason and Chris Vaughn, a niece Shannan Peterson, 9 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father James Criss Vaughn and a brother Richard Vaughn.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Parsons Recreation Center where the family will receive friends from 3-5 pm. Bonnie Standley

Bonnie Lou (Haner) Standley, age 82 of Galena, passed away at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO on January 12, 2017 at 12:19 PM.

Bonnie was born at the Haner Home on 20th Street in Galena on July 14, 1934. Her parents were Ralph Harlow Haner and Blanche (Moody) Haner. She graduated from Riverton High School with the Class of 1952. After graduating high school, she married Leonard Walter Standley on December 20, 1952, a ceremony that took place in the same home that she was born in. They lived in Port Hueneme, CA for 25 years before moving back to the Galena area in 1989.

Bonnie was a homemaker, a mother, and the “Yard Duty Supervisor”. She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Galena for many years, serving for a short time as Sunday School Teacher, and for many years as the Treasurer of the Open Bible Sunday School Class. She also served as PTA President while all of her children went through school over a period of several years.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, on May 3, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her father, Ralph Haner (1984); her mother, Blanche Haner (1991); as well as 3 brothers and 5 sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Darrel Standley (wife, Christine) of Pewaukee, WI, and David Standley (wife, Dawn) of Santa Maria, CA; four daughters, Cindy Woolston of Baxter Springs, KS, Cameron Hay (husband, Jeff) of Galena, Cathy Fuerte of Galena, and Connie Lasky (husband, Ian) of Apple Valley, CA; 13 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren who lovingly refer to her as “Grandma Great”.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena. Carey Haner will officiate. Pallbearers will be Eric Hernandez, Brandon Hay, Kyle Hay, William Woolston, Corey Tucker, and Reuben Paddock, with honorary pallbearers Jeff Nester, Brian Kuhn, and Jose Hernandez. Burial will follow at Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena.

Kyler Michael David Boyd born still but still born on January 10th, 2017 at Integris hospital in Miami, Oklahoma.
Kyler was born to Shaun William and Angel Marie Boyd and big brother Bryce William Lees Boyd of Miami, Oklahoma.

Baby Kyler may not be able to play with his big brother and, Mommy and Daddy may not be able to hear his laughter, But Kyler will play and giggle with his Great Nana, Tammy Blankenship, and Grandpa, Michael Helton in heaven. Kyler will receive great teddy bear hugs from his Great Great Uncle David Curtis. And will be so spoiled and sung to by his Great Great Grandmothers Shirly Smith, Nancy Oldfield, and Grandma Johnson.

Kyler is survived by his Mom and Dad and big brother Bryce Boyd of Miami, Oklahoma. His Nana Kristen Camper of Frederick, Colorado, Tammy and Wesley Greninger of Baxter Springs, Kansas. Mark Boyd and Dawn Freeman of Miami, Oklahoma, Daniel and Misty Rushing of Marland, Oklahoma. Kyler is also survived by so many Great-grandparents, Aunts and Uncles from the Horn, Boyd,and Rushing Families.

Debbie Walker

Deborah S Walker, age 62, passed away at 9:03 pm, Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin ,MO following an illness.


Debbie was born January 14, 1954 in Baxter Springs, KS. Her parents were John and Margie (Heistand) Jones. She was a lifetime resident of Southeast Kansas

She graduated from Riverton High School with the class of 1972. She then attended Pittsburg State University earning a Master’s Degree in Music Education. She began her teaching career in Williamsburg, KS. She later taught in school districts at Ft Scott, Cherokee, and Galena. She returned back to teach at Cherokee until her retirement in 2008. After retirement she worked as a substitute teacher in area schools.

She was a pianist. She enjoyed collecting buttons, butterflies, and belsinckers. She enjoyed going to flea markets, auctions, and garage sales.

Debbie was married to Frank Walker on April 11, 1981 in Columbus, KS. He survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Jon Walker, Columbus; one daughter, Vanessa Neher (husband, Jeremy), Oronogo, MO; her mother, Margie Heistand, Columbus; and one sister, Shirley Thompson (husband, Daryell), Columbus.

Her father, John Jones preceded her in death in 2003.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Pastor Larry Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Columbus. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Mercy Hospital in care of the funeral home.

Helen Johnson

Helen M. Johnson, 98, of Columbus, Kansas passed from this life on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Autumn Place in Columbus, KS.

Helen was born March 27, 1918 in Hallowell, Kansas to Milt and Grace (Smith) Forkner. After graduating from Cherokee County Community High School, Helen taught at Globe and then Oak Valley rural schools in Cherokee County. She married Robert “Bob” Johnson on December 29, 1937 in Columbus, KS. After her marriage, she stayed at home as a homemaker taking care of her family and helping Bob on the family farm near Faulkner, KS. Helen was a member of the Faulkner Christian Church and she loved her church family. She enjoyed reading, journaling, machine quilting, and embroidery painting. She loved having the family over after church on Sunday’s and cooking them a family dinner. Helen’s family was so important to her and she cherished all of her grandchildren. Helen loved to send cards to friends and family for all occasions.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Juanita Horn, Maxine Wiseman-Goodger, Billie Miller; and one infant brother, Milton Dale Forkner.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Janice Maxwell and husband Jim of rural Columbus, KS, and Roberta Hoy and husband Tony of Dearing, KS; one sister, Joy Gatewood and husband Charles of Columbus, KS; nine grandchildren, Bob Maxwell and wife Kathleen of Valencia, CA, Lisa Maxwell-Craig and husband Larry Craig of Oviedo, FL, Kenny Hoy and wife Trena of Olathe, KS, Lori (Maxwell)Simmons and husband Tony of Seneca, MO, Tosha (Hoy) Falsone and husband Anthony of San Antonio, TX, Shawna Maxwell-Ergin and husband Erhan Ergin of Istanbul, Turkey, Brent Maxwell and wife Christina of Larned, KS, John Hoy and wife Sarah of Coffeyville, KS, Shanel (Maxwell) Bullard and husband John of Columbus, KS; seventeen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, with a third expected to be born around Helen’s Birthday; along with many nieces and nephews.

Lou Davidson

Louis Edward “Lou” Davidson, 63 of Radley, KS passed away at 1:15 pm Friday, January 6, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

He was born October 17, 1953 in Scotia, CA the son of Louis “Blackie” Davidson and Dorothy (Harrington) Davidson.

He was an Army Veteran entering in 1974 and was discharged in 1978.

He was married to Tonja Brancart; she survives of the home.

Lou was a longtime area musician where he performed with many bands. He was a skilled multi instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, studio engineer and piano tuner. He recorded two self-titled albums that he played, sang and produced himself.

He was also an avid wine maker and photographer.

Additional survivors include his mother Dorothy of Galena, KS, two brothers: George Davidson of Neosho, MO and Joe Davidson of Joplin, MO a sister Marla Arcadi of Freemont, CA, a nephew C.B. (Andrea) Davidson of Cedar Park, TX and a niece Anna Davidson of Napa, ID; a special daughter Brandie (Jason) Dennis and their children Abigail, Jackson, Charlotte and Liberty; several aunts and cousins and a longtime friend and collaborator Peter Kirch of Monett, MO.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother William Davidson.

Charles Englehardt

Charles M. Engelhardt went to be with the Lord on Monday.

Engelhardt, 92, passed away at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Jan. 9, 2017, at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg. He was born April 21, 1924, to Charles and Marie (Sloan) near Moran, Kansas.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family and two weiner dogs — Cocoa and Wendy. He was also a practical joker — giving nicknames to one of his daughter’s boyfriends and claiming the engraving on his headstone was on the wrong side.

In 1943, he married Maxine Ansell. They later divorced. Together they had two children: Sherry (Engelhardt) Willis, husband Donald, of Newton, and Vicki (Engelhardt) Conkright, husband Jim, of Lenexa.

He later married Barbara Hitch. In 1977, he moved his family to Pittsburg to work as a salesman at Marrone’s. He retired in 1999.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Barbara (Hitch) Engelhardt, of Pittsburg, sister Linda (Engelhardt) Wood, of Chula Vista, California, his daughters and stepsons: Tim Curtis, wife Marva, Louis Curtis, wife Marianne, and Kelley Curtis; grandchildren: Mark Willis, wife Cathy, Mike Willis, wife Susan, Erika McMinn, husband Gordon, Beth Shelby, husband Scott, Marcie Seiler, husband Drew, Tanner Curtis, Keith Curtis, wife Erin, Amy O’Crowley, husband Michael; great grandchildren Carly Willis, Sydney Willis, Matt Willis, Jamie Willis, Brett Shelby, Chance Willis, Brooklynn Shelby, Paige McMinn, Gianna O’Crowley, Marianne O’Crowley, Cecelia O’Crowley, Kayla Seiler, Addi Seiler, Gabriel Seiler, Zella Curtis and Sullivan Curtis; and great great grandson Greyson Reynolds.

Linda Land

Linda Sue (Hastings) Land, age 61, passed from this life on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Columbus, KS.

Linda was born October 26, 1955 in Burtonwood, England to the late William D. Hastings and Zena Beth (Venneberg) Hastings. Mrs. Land was a 1973 graduate of Bentonville High School, Bentonville, Arkansas. Linda obtained her cosmetology license after graduating from high school, and over the years took care of many family and friends with haircuts, permanents and trims. She always did an amazing job! Linda was a long-time resident of Bentonville, Arkansas and just moved to Columbus, Kansas a month ago.

Linda is preceded in death by her father, William D. Hastings, and her husband Norman Dale Land.

Linda is survived by her son, Cory Dale Hastings of Columbus, KS; mother, Zena Beth Hastings of Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister, Kathy Whelchel of Rogers, AR; one brother, Will Hastings of Ft. Wayne, IN. Linda loved her nieces and nephews very much, surviving is, Blake, Payton, and Ayden Hastings of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Zach and Jessie Whelchel of Rogers, AR. Linda is also survived by an Aunt, Josie Venneberg of Bentonville, AR and cousins, Darryl, Lisa, and Stephen Graham and Stephanie and Brian Argo and their precious daughter, Serenity all of Cave Springs, AR; Linda’s companion, Jim Gideon of Columbus, KS. Linda was very fortunate to have many dear friends who were like family to her that also survive.

Linda was an organ donor. We are very proud of her for giving others a second chance at life.

Sophia Marie Carrier, three-week-old daughter of Thomas Carrier and Megan L Frye, passed away Friday January 6, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Missouri.

Sophia was born December 16, 2016 in Springfield.

Surviving is her mother, Megan L Frye and Thomas W Carrier, Wyandotte, OK; maternal grandparents, Melissa Lee Cox, Riverton, KS, and Matthew Joseph Frye, Odessa, MO; paternal grandparents, Lori Carrier, Shidler, OK and Thomas E Carrier, Miami, OK; Maternal great grandparents, Myonza Lee Kennedy, Shell Knob, MO, and Gary Wyren, state of Florida, Larry Frye, Lees Summit, MO, and Carol Frye, Odessa, MO,

Memorial services will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Highway Tabernacle, Quapaw, OK. Pastor Ray Clonts will officiate.

Shirley Dayton

Shirley Ann Dayton, 85, of Pittsburg, died January 5, 2017 at Golden Living in Pittsburg, KS.
She was born January 29, 1931 in Pittsburg the daughter of Raymond and Edna Miller Ryan. She had lived in Pittsburg for her entire life. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Pittsburg and attended St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth for two years.

She married Gene Paul Dayton on October 10, 1953 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg. He died on February 6, 1985.

Mrs. Dayton was a homemaker and mother her entire life.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, St. Mary’s Altar Society, and was active with the adoration chapel in Frontenac, KS.

Survivors include one daughter Patty Harbour of Lake Quivira, KS, three sons Tom Dayton of Pittsburg, Dan Dayton of Indianapolis, Indiana and Gene “Putzer” Dayton of Pittsburg, one brother Ray Ryan of Pittsburg and one sister Meg Clugston of Tulsa, OK, five grandchildren Casey Harbour of Wichita, Meaghan Dayton of Houston, TX, Conner Dayton of Pittsburg, Maria Clare Dayton of Indianapolis and Drew Dayton of Pittsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother James Ryan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg with Father Michael Baldwin, as celebrant. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited at 6 pm Friday January 6, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, KS. The family will receive their friends after the rosary service until 8 pm at the funeral home.
