Linda Laird

Linda K. Laird, age 70, of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away July 23, 2017 in Ft. Scott.

Linda was born to the late Grover and Oleta Thompson Wilhite, December 25, 1946 in Hollis, Oklahoma. On April 14, 1976 she married Alan Douglas Laird in Hereford, Texas. She went to college to obtain her teaching certificate, and taught school in El Paso, Texas, retiring in 1998. Central Church of Christ in Hereford, TX was where she attended church during her time there, before later moving to Ft. Scott. She enjoyed cooking, reading, staying active in church, and loved teaching with all of her heart.

Surviving is one son: John Laird (wife (Kasey) of Ft. Scott, Kansas, and 2 grandchildren: Kelsey and Lane Laird, also of Ft. Scott; and one brother: Mike (wife Julie), of Yukon, Oklahoma.

Memorial Donations may be made to Faith Christian Church, for the backpack and school supply drive; and mailed to 2203 Deer Rd; Garland, KS 66741.

Edith Sachetta

Edith Marie Sachetta was born on January 4, 1924 to Pete Ferraro, Sr. and Loretta Vetro Ferraro in Carona, Kansas. Edith attended local schools and she entered the workforce after attending school. She worked for three years at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. On August 27, 1947 she married Angelo Sachetta at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, Kansas.

Edith and Angelo began their life together in Weir, Kansas and later in 1952 they bought the Holt Store in Hallowell, Kansas. They began their long career in the “mom and pop” deli and market business. Edith and Angelo offered their customers quality cuts of meat, home cooked meals and deli foods to go. And they prepared their famous sandwiches daily for the convenience and pleasure of their customers. They owned and operated Angelo’s until 1983 when they retired. Edith thoroughly enjoyed everyone who came into their store, and she especially looked forward to visiting with the children of the family’s who shopped at her store.

Edith was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chetopa, Kansas and Alter Society. The last few years Edith moved to Oakview Estates in Frontenac, KS, and most recently Edith resided at the MedicaLodges in Frontenac. Survivors include many neices, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.

Edith’s husband Angelo preceded her in death as well her parents; six brothers, Joe, Frank, Mike, Victor, Jimmy, and Pete, Jr. Ferraro; and five sisters, Pauline Ducroux, Lilly Getto, Annie Decicco, Minnie Parise and Dorothy Ferraro.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at the Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego, KS with Father Larry Parker and Father Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Bridget's Cemetery. Gay Brummitt

Gay Lee Brummitt, 54, of Pittsburg, died at 2:51 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

She was born May 31, 1963, at Ft. Madison, IA, to J.T. and JoAnne (Street) Brummitt. She attended La Plata High School. Gay was known for her spunky personality and giving spirit. Over the years Gay opened her home to anyone who needed a place to stay, a good home cooked meal, or just simply someone to talk to. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and a dedicated little sister. With Gay family was always first and foremost. Anyone who knew her knew how proud she was of her children and grandchildren. 

Survivors include a daughter, Robin Browning, her husband Seth and their daughter, Abigail Glee of Pittsburg, KS; two sons, Vance Frick, his wife Sami and their daughter Adalyn Honor of Kearney, MO, and Garrett Stalder and his wife Andie of Pittsburg, KS; three sisters, Merrilee Wells of Parsons, KS, Joy Brummitt of Farber, MO, and Glee Brummitt Hanson of Ladonia, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Abigail Jo Anne Rhoades.

A celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday (August 12) at First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date in the Coy-Brummitt Cemetery in Trenton, MO. The family suggests memorials to the First Church of the Nazarene. LeAnna Storm

LeAnna Storm, 75, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 8:55 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Freeman Health System, Joplin, MO. 

She was born December 13, 1941, at Luray, KS, the daughter of Roy and Agnes (Shiroky) Vance. 

On March 4, 1961, she was united in marriage to Wayne L. Storm in Pittsburg, KS. He survives of the home. Mrs. Storm was a homemaker. Membership was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pittsburg. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by son, Mark Storm of Pittsburg, KS, daughter, Kellie Hakmiller (Christian) of McKinney, TX, son, Jason Storm of McKinney, TX, two sisters, LaRue Tiffany of Grove, OK, and Elaine Schartz of Pittsburg, KS, one brother, Henry "Bud" Nutt of Grove, OK, and three grandchildren, Storm and Blaze Hakmiller and Payton Elizabeth Storm. She is preceded in death by her parents. 

A service for Mrs. Storm is set for 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 31, 2017, at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, with Pastor Barbara Johnston conducting the service. Burial will follow in the Crocker Cemetery, Pittsburg. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Norma Peterson

Norma Leona Peterson, age 76, passed away at 7:15 pm, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Galena Nursing Center, Galena, KS following an illness.

Norma was born November 7, 1940 in Galena, KS. Her parents were William Henry and Arietta Ann (Sweet) Anderson.

She graduated from Galena High School in 1958, and returned home to this area in 2005 after retiring as Manager of Service Master after 25 years. During that time, she received the Marion E Wade Award for Excellence and her name was inscribed on the Wall of Service at the corporate office in Memphis, TN. Her last position with the company was with the Franciscan Missionary Brothers at St. Joseph’s Hill Infirmary and Price Memorial in St Louis, MO. She had previously lived 15 years at Villa Ridge, MO.

She attended Riverton Friends Church, Riverton, KS and volunteered at church services at Quaker Hill Manor, Lowell, KS. She had been a member of the Motor Maids of Missouri for 18 years. She was a past Missouri Chapter President. Norma traveled to every state in the continental USA. She was very athletic and played softball, basketball, and bowling. She was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. She always made a special effort to attend her grandchildren’s activities and games.

She was first married to Jerry Gaines. She later married Larry Allen Peterson in Miami, OK. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother, Norman (Wic) Anderson, brother, Ralph Anderson, sister, Hazel Bankson, and grandson, Ryan Bailey.

Surviving are two sons, Dustin Gaines (wife, Melissa), Springfield, MO, and Alan Gaines (wife, Addie) Branson, MO; one daughter, Marcia Murry (husband, Jerry) Riverton; 6 grandchildren, Brandi Martin (Zack), Chet Gaines (Tabi), Joshua Gaines (Becca), Morgan Garvin (Casey), Jessica CLark (Kyle), and Cyle Bailey (Penny); 6 great grandchildren and a host of others that she loved as her own.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Jeff D Martin and Pastor Wes Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, KS.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Christian Motorcycle Association would be appricated.

Thomas Cash

Thomas L. Cash 91, of Pittsburg, KS passed away at 7:37am Saturday July 15, 2017 at his home. 

Thomas was born December 4, 1925 in Bentonville, AR the son of Christopher and Elsie (Keene) Cash. Thomas graduated from high school in Bentonville, Arkansas and has been a part of this community since 1959. During WWII Thomas served his country in the United States Navy as a Frogman. 

On August 30, 1950 Thomas married Mary L. Dorey in Harrison, AR. Mary preceded him in death on March 19, 2012. Thomas worked as an Electrical Foreman for McNally’s in Pittsburg, KS for 28 years. Thomas was a member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg, KS serving as Care Pastor and Elder at the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church. He was also a member of the American Legion, Electrical Union #301 Nash, TX. Thomas loved mowing with the tractor; reading the Bible, and was known to always lend a helping hand to others. 

Survivors include his children Jimmy Lawrence and wife Terry of Ozark, MO, Thomas Cash and wife Elaine of Austin, TX, Jerry Cash and wife Wanapa of Reno, NV, Carol Cash of Bentonville, AR and Gary Cash of Rogers, AR; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. 

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, parents, daughter June Cash, and 5 siblings.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm Thursday July 20, 2017 at the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Amy Stear

Amy Lou Stear passed away in Pittsburg, Kansas, on Sunday, July 16, 2017, with her sister by her side.

She was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on November 1, 1954, the daughter of James William Stear and Mary Warren Stear of Huntington.

Amy was predeceased by her son, James Shay Stear Swinford, who died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her brother, James Warren Stear; her parents, and several beloved aunts, uncles and cousin.

Amy is survived by her daughter, Lucy Lee Stear Swinford, of Milwaukie, Wisconsin, her sister Linda Sue (Kent) Runyan of Pittsburg, Kansas, her uncle, Richard Jones of Moor Park, California, and several cousins including Rick (JoAnn) Corder, June (Russ) Gordon, and Leanne (Steve) Opritza. She also leaves behind a dear friend, Rachel Crites of Milwaukie.

Amy is lovingly remembered by her nephews, Charles Keith (Stacy) Runyan and Jonathan Scott (Kasey) Runyan, and niece, Jaime Lynn (Jeff) Peterson. One of the joys of her later life was spending time with her great-nephews and nieces: Madison Elizabeth Runyan, Charles Ethan Runyan, James Daniel Peterson, Isaac Thomas Peterson, Clara Lynn Peterson, Kooper Warren Runyan, and Wylie Owen Runyan.

Amy graduated from Huntington East High School in 1973 and Marshall University in 1980. She spent most of her professional life as a union organizer, always fighting for workers, protecting the poor and sick, and standing up for injustice, no matter how unpopular that stance. Amy worked as the Organizing Director for the United Healthcare Workers, District 1199, in Columbus, Ohio, from 1982 to 1989; the National Organizing Coordinator for the Service Employees International Union in Seattle, WA from 1990 to 1994; the Director of Organizing for the Oregon Public Employees Union, Local 503, in Portland, OR from 1994 to 1997; and the Wisconsin Director of 9 to 5, National Association of Working Women from 1997 to 2011.

After moving to Pittsburg, Kansas, in 2011, Amy enjoyed traveling with her sister’s family, especially visiting the ghost hotels of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and the attractions found in Branson, Missouri. Amy thoroughly enjoyed the “Girls’ Weekend Out” events when she traveled with her sister to the Kansas City area to shop and eat. If she couldn’t actually travel, she loved to shop online and find bargains! She was a wonderful cook and often prepared special treats for her sister’s fifth grade students, as well as created traditional holiday meals for her family. Amy could be counted on to help baby-sit her seven grand nieces and nephews. Her family and friends will remember that Amy was always up for lively political discussions, either around the dining room table or via the Internet.

The family is truly appreciative of the medical guidance from Dr. John Taylor and Sean Anderson as well as Avalon Hospice. After two extended stays at Medicalodge South, the staff and residents were not only our support for Amy, but also became our friends.

Patricia Davidson

Patricia L. (Smith) Davidson, 80, of rural Girard, passed away at 3:00 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2017 at her home in Ringo, Kansas. 

She was born September 12, 1936 at Pittsburg, the daughter of John and Audrey (Coots) Smith. She lived the majority of her life in Pittsburg. After marrying Oliver Davidson on July 28, 1953, she threw all of her energies into raising their children. Pat worked as a school cook for USD 250 at the Pittsburg Public schools until she retired. 

She is survived by husband, Oliver Davidson of the home; two sisters, Virginia McNeely, of Pittsburg, Kansas, Delores (Anton) Troglia of Franklin, Kansas. Her kids Jim (Gallie) Davidson from Ringo, Kansas, Debby (Jim) Hughes from Colorado and Richard (Brenda) Davidson from Buffalo, Missouri and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Audrey Smith, two brothers, Johnny Smith and George Smith and a granddaughter, Marquita (Davidson) Hasley. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, whose greatest passion was helping others. 

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday (July 21) at Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Kevin Ewing

Mr. Kevin James Ewing, 31, of Chanute, Kansas, departed this life suddenly on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at his residence.

Kevin entered this life on January 17, 1986, in Iola, Kansas, born to the union of Floyd and Barbara (Sprague) Ewing. He was a graduate of Humboldt High School and Neosho County Community College in Chanute. He was employed by Wal-Mart in Chanute for six years working in their security division. He enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, bicycling, art projects, World of Warcraft, music and Jiu-jitsu Martial Arts.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Julianna Ewing.

Kevin is survived by his father, Floyd Ewing of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two brothers, Matthew Ewing of Neosho, Missouri and David Sprague of Edwardsville, Kansas; paternal grandmother, Patricia Kay Womelsdorf of Bella Vista; several nieces and nephews as well as a host of other family and many close friends in Chanute, who will dearly miss Kevin.

Funeral services for Mr. Ewing are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2017, in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Steven Englert officiating. Burial will follow in the Tracy Cemetery. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Aaron Ewing, Landon Ewing, Galvin Emerson, Daton Aubrey, Donovan Taylor and Seth Kirk. Carolyn Schultz

Carolyn K. Schultz, 73, of Pittsburg, died July 10, 2017 at her home.

She was born October 30, 1943 in Mound Ridge, Kansas the daughter of Clinton and Arlene Krehbiel.

She married Ralph F. Schultz on July 20, 1963 in Salina, Kansas.

Carolyn was the owner of Art With Heart in Pittsburg, KS from 1981 to 1991 before moving to Overland Park, KS where she continued her love of art by promoting her crafts at various art events across the four state area.

She was an active member at the Pitt Naz Church. 

Carolyn enjoyed being involved in PEO (Chapter CJ), Zone 6 Garden Club, book club and Crestwood Women’s Golf Association.

Survivors include husband; Ralph Schultz of Pittsburg, KS, daughter; Debbie (Jonah) Bishop of Pittsburg, KS, son; David Schultz of Alexandria, VA, 2 brothers; Roger (Mary) Krehbiel of Salina, KS; John R. (Sissy) Krehbiel of Lawrence, KS, sister; Ann (Rey) Torres of Grand Lake, OK, 2 grandchildren; Stephanie McCabe and Keenan Bishop. 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be 2:00 pm on July 15th at the Pitt Naz Church in Pittsburg, KS, with the Retired Rev. Jim Sukraw, officiating. A memorial has been established to the Pitt Naz Church. Condolences may be left at our website www.bathnaylor.com

Alma Cameron

Alma Louisa Cameron, 95, of Frontenac, died Wednesday, July 12, 2017. 

Alma was born March 12, 1922, to James and Vera (Bolser) Swope at Carbon Center, MO. In 1941, she graduated as the class Vice President from Cockerill High School. 

On August 23, 1941, she was united in marriage to George H. Cameron in Girard, KS. They were happily married for seventy-three years until George's death March 8, 2015. Alma was a homemaker and was very involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren and the community of Frontenac, KS. She held memberships in the Rob Morris Chapter #74, Order of Eastern Star, the Frontenac American Legion Auxiliary Unit #43 and the Frontenac United Methodist Church. Alma never missed an opportunity to go on Saturday night dates with George and their best friends the Pettus' and Coleman's. She played cards whenever possible including many games of solitaire each day. George and Alma were named the Outstanding Family in 2005 by Pittsburg State University. 

Alma is survived by her two sons, Richard (Karen) Cameron and Randy (Debbie) Cameron, six grandchildren, Adam (Lindsey) Cameron, James (Kelli) Cameron, Stephanie (Lee) Shradar, Breanna (Ian) Morris, Brooke (Steve) Belcher and Rachel (Matt) Chick, five great-grandchildren, Adison and Brekyn Cameron and Vera and Eisley Shradar and Cameron Chick. She is also survived by two sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Wilma Jean Smardo. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers (Frank and Eddie Swope), a daughter, Alma Jean Cameron Peterson and a granddaughter, Robin Davera Maddox. 

A service for Alma is set for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, with Pastor Annie Ricker conducting the service. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m., until 11:00 a.m., at the Brenner Mortuary, on Saturday. Carol Jarvis

Carol Mae Jarvis, age 74 passed away at 10:33 am, Sunday July 9, 2017 at her home following an illness.

Carol was born Jul 11, 1942 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her parents were Luther and Marjorie (Payne) VanCleave. She had lived in Galena most of her adult life.

She had worked as a cook at the USD 404 schools, Riverton KS. She was an active member of the Spring Grove Apostolic Faith Church, Galena, SK. She enjoyed playing lotto and taking good care of the children and grandchildren.

Surviving is one daughter, Carol Lee LaTurner, Galena, KS; 3 brothers, Dewey VanCLeave, Tahoe, Nevada, Tom VanCLeave, Wichita, KS, and William VanCleave; and one sister, Marjorie Marcellino, Crete, Nebraska. David Hunter Wilson and Samantha LaTurner both of Galena, KS.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Rodney and Kevin Jarvis.

She was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena KS for cremation.

The family will host a memorial service, at 1:00 pm, Friday, July 14, 2017 at Spring Grove Apostolic Faith Church, Galena, KS. Pastor Clem Moore will officiate.

Paul Sturm

Paul M. Sturm, Sr., 67, of Pittsburg, died at 5:40 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2017, at Via Christi Hospital at Pittsburg, KS. 

He was born October 9, 1949, at Argentine, KS, to John C. and Jolene (Giacobi) Sturm. He was a lifelong resident of southeast Kansas and a graduate of Arma High School. 

He married Patricia Belle Simons on Jan. 26, 1979, at Girard. They divorced. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2003. Paul worked as a laborer for Producers Coop for many years. Survivors include his four sons, Jack W. Ford Jr. of Erie, KS, Paul "Bud" Sturm Jr. of Parsons, KS, Cornelius Eston Sturm of Erie, KS, and Patrick Joseph Sturm of Erie, KS; his longtime companion, Lucy Threllfall of Pittsburg, KS; two sisters, Sharon Mapes of Arcadia, KS, and Kathleen Hencey of Pittsburg, KS; four brothers, Ted Sturm of Vinita, OK, John Sturm of Vinita, OK, Mike Sturm of Vinita, OK, and Larry Sturm of Pittsburg, KS; 9 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson and one on the way and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William (Bill) Sturm and Robert Allen (Bob) Sturm, and a great-granddaughter Adaleigh M-K Ford. The family would like to thank the Via Christi Cancer Center for their care and comfort during his battle with cancer. 

Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (July 15) at the Rosebank Cemetery in Mulberry, KS, with Pastor Don Talent officiating. Following the service at 1:00 p.m. the family will be hosting a lunch at the Open Door Fellowship Church, 918 W 20th St., Pittsburg, KS. The family suggests memorials to the Angels Among Us. John Lewis Hubbard, age 78, passed away at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 8, 2017 at his home in Galena KS following an illness.

Mr Hubbard was born September 16, 1938 in Pierce City, MO. His parents were Raymond Albert Hubbard and Lydia Lucille (Hayes) Hubbard. He had lived in Galena most of his life.

He was a truck driver, working 15 years for Yellow Freight. He later worked a period of 4 years as a bus driver for the Bolivar MO schools. John retired in 2005.

He was a member of House of Prayer, Riverton, KS. He had been a Charter Member of the Baxter Springs (KS) Saddle Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, rodeo and horses. His greatest interest was in his family. He was a loving, kind hearted, Christian man.

Surviving is two sons, Raymond Elmer Hubbard, Webb City, MO; Brian Nevins, Kansas City MO; two daughters, Dena Hill (husband, Ronnie) Galena, and Barbara Jean Samuel (husband, Helden), Kansas City, MO; two brothers, Richard Lee Hubbard, (wife, Judy), Joplin, MO and Edward “Joe” Hubbard, (wife, Janet) Riverton; one sister, Mildred Marie Rose, Alba, MO; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; 12 nephews, 9 nieces, including a special niece, Jackie Jean Sofia, Galena.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John Lewis Hubbard Jr; two brothers, Ralph Eugene Hubbard and Raymond Albert Hubbard JR; and one sister, Katheryn Hean Rash.

John was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena KS for cremation.

The family will hold a reception to celebrate John’s memory from noon to 4 pm, Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the home of a daughter, Dena Hill at 916 W 11th Street, Galena. Pastor Audie Tash will preside.

Charles Burkybile

Charles William “Chuck” Burkybile Jr. passed away Thursday morning, July 6, 2017 at the scene of a a pedestrian/car accident at 18th and Main, Galena, KS.

Chuck was born May 7, 1951 in Baxter Springs, KS. His parents were Charles Wm Burkybile Sr and Joann (Strickland) Burkybile.

He worked as the manager of the Galena Motel, Galena KS for several years until he and his partner, Glen Roosa sold it in 2012. He enjoyed walking and gardening.

His companion, Glen A Roosa was fatally injured in the same accident.

Surviving are two brothers, Roger “Poge” Burkybile (wife, Debbie), and Albert Burkybile, all from Baxter Springs, KS; one sister, Beverly Burkybile - Doss, Galena, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Franklin “Flash” Burkybile.

The family received friends Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

Funeral services were at 6:00 pm. Pastor Jeff D Martin will officiate.


Glen Roosa

Glen Allen Roosa, age 84 was pronounced dead at 7:55 am, Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Mercy Hospital Joplin M following injuries received in a car/pedestrian accident earlier in Galena, KS

Glen was born June 26, 1931 in Galena, KS. His parent were James Allen Roosa and Wyona (Shallenburger) Roosa. He was a long-time resident of Galena.

He owned and operated the Galena Motel between 1991 and 2012. He was a successful entrepreneur. He enjoyed gardening and traveling.

His companion, Charles “Chuck” Burkybile was fatally injured in the same accident.

Surviving is one son, Stephen Roosa (wife, Nan Ellen), Louisville KY; one daughter, Cheri Roosa-Kane (husband, William) Louisville, KS; one sister, Barbara Sprague Shaw, Galena, KS; 5 grandchildren, Sarah Roosa-Collins, Daniel Roosa, Clellan Kane, Robbin Honious, and Maryelle Jackson; and 8 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Clara Idella Roosa.

The family received friends from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, Sunday July 9, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

A memorial service was held that evening at 6:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff D Martin officiating.

Rosel Easom

Rosel Easom, 90, of Via Christi Village, Pittsburg, KS, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2017. 

Rosel was born in Offenbach, am Main, Germany, July 21, 1926 to Otto and Wilhelmina (nee Wolf) Koch. At the conclusion on World War II she met and married Billie Joe Parris in Offenbach and in December 1947 came to the U.S. and lived in Pittsburg since that time. She was a longtime employee and retiree of National Pizza Company. She is predeceased by her parents, husband and son Rudy Parris. 

She leaves behind and will be greatly missed by her daughter Penny Parris, son Gail Parris (Terri), daughter Kathie Easom (Christine), five grandchildren (Jon (Angela), Don (Kelly), Josh, Christopher (Kirsten), Jason), eight great grandchildren (Berkely (Kaleb), Kendall, Emory, Grant, Reed, Owen, Hannah, Lucy) and one great-great grandchild (Violet). 

A memorial service will be held in the future with a private graveside burial. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to the Capper Foundation, Topeka, KS. 

Arrangements have been entrusted to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home.

Helen Theys

Helen R. Theys, 95, of Pittsburg, passed away at 9:40 p.m., Friday, June 30, 2017 at the Medical Lodge of Frontenac. 

She was born January 26, 1922 at Frontenac, KS, the daughter of Albert E. and Lena (Anderson) Cole. She attended Frontenac Schools until the 8th grade and graduated from Pittsburg High School. 

On September 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to Emile Theys at Girard, KS. He preceded her in death on October 2, 1967. She worked for USD #250 as a cook for 29 years. She also sold Avon products for almost 50 years, and was a volunteer for the Crawford County Election Board for over 50 years. 

She is survived by a son Richard Theys and his wife Jane of Rochester, MN; a sister Pearl Martin of Salt Lake City, Utah; three grandchildren, Richard Allen Vickers, Joy Pruitt, and Jenny Miller all of Texas; 6 great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Sharon K. Theys, three sisters Albertine Roberta Sova, Nadine Hank, and Clarice Cole. 

A funeral service is set for 11:00 a.m., Friday (July 7) at Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to SEK Humane Society. Charlotte Turner

Charlotte Louise Turner, age 64, passed away at 1:57 am, Sunday, July 2, 2017 at her home following an illness.

Mrs Turner was born January 31, 1953 in Galena, KS. Her parents were Charles and Vera Mae (Matthews) Brand. She had lived in Galena most of her life.

She was an LPN. For 5 years, she worked as a nurse in a hospital in Kansas City. She then worked several years at Galena Manor, Galena, KS. She last worked as a clerk at Joseph’s Quik Stop, Galena, a position she held for 15 years until her retirement in 2010. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and martial arts. She loved animals and treated her pet dogs as part of her family.

Charlotte was married to Melvin Turner on June 22, 1981 in Miami, OK. He survives.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Mandy Coy, Little Rock , AR, 4 grandchildren; one nephew, James Cruse, Galena; two nieces, Cynthia Albers, Galena, and Melissa Forsythe, Alba, MO; great nephews, Brady Cruse, Chris Cruse, Cory Cruse, J. R. Shoemaker; one great-niece, Stephanie Shoemaker; and 4 great-great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Jerry Brand, and one sister, Beth Cruse.

Funeral services will be at 2:00pm, Friday, July 7, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Wally Lankford will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral home, Galena.
