John Urankar

John V. Urankar (98), died on December 29, 2017 at Guest Home Estates in Pittsburg, KS. 

He was born in Breezy Hill, KS. on June 6th, 1919 to Vincent and Frances (Ziebert) Urankar. 

He married Peggy McQueen on Dec. 25th 1940. She preceded him in death in 1979. John served in WW II with the 40th Combat Engineers. After his tour of duty he opened a neighborhood grocery store in Pittsburg. In 1950 he was recalled to service and spent a year in Korea. He began a career with the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 29 years of service. In 1978 he purchased a 40-acre farm where he raised beef cattle for 30 years. For many years he made sausage that his family and friends enjoyed. He was a member of the American Legion and SNPJ Lodge for over 70 years. 

Survivors include his daughter Karen (Richard) Demboski of Dublin, OH., grandson, John (Susan) Demboski of Denver CO., granddaughters, Amy (Tim) James Columbus, OH., and Jennifer Demboski, Dublin, OH. He is also survived by three great- grandchildren, Iris, Olivia, and Luke. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother Frank Urankar and his special friend and companion Doris Wilkin. 

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday (January 2) at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac, KS, with Father Thomas Stroot officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials be given to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery Fund. Gail Brungardt

Gail E. Brungardt, age 78, of Shell Knob, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Mrs. Brungardt was born on May 23, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan. On December 16, 1956, she was united in marriage to the love of her life Leonard Brungardt. Mrs. Brungardt was a devoted Jehovah Witness and was baptized in 1967. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed every minute she could with them. Mrs. Brungardt always had a smiling face and was a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be forever missed.

Survivors include her husband of sixty-one years, Leonard Brungardt, of Shell Knob; four daughters, Vickie Mertens and her husband Michael, of Shell Knob, Christine Hudson and her husband Phil, of Pittsburg, Kansas, Sandra Dee Brungardt, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Angie Morgan, of Bentonville, Arkansas; thirteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son David Brungardt.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Shell Knob, with Elder Dale Crownhart officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made the Kingdom Hall in Shell Knob and entrusted to the White Funeral Home and Crematory, P.O. Box 890, Cassville, MO 65625.

Bill Carson

William A. “Bill” Carson, 96 of Pittsburg, KS died at 9:30am, Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

He was born July 11, 1921 in Irwin, PA the son of Robert and Christie (Wiek) Carson.
He graduated from Norwin School District in Irwin.

On Aug 3, 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army; he was honorably discharged March 16, 1946 attaining the Rank of sergeant. 

Bill was united in marriage to Violet Deane Woollen on July 23, 1948 in Wadsworth, KS; she preceded him in death on January 30, 2012.

He worked for Phillips 66 Petroleum Company for 25 years, he then went on to purchase a fuel distributorship where he owned and operated Carson Oil Company for many years.

He was a longtime member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Pittsburg; additional memberships include the Frontenac American Legion Post #43 and the Kansas Oil Marketers Association.
Survivors include three sons: Alan (Nancy) Carson of Lee’s Summit, MO, Kent (Lea) Carson of Fairland, OK and Marlin Carson of Frontenac, KS along with five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother Bob Carson.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg with Rev. Monte Shoemake officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Harold Napier

Harold Napier, of Pittsburg, KS and Fairland, OK, passed away on December 27, 2017. 

Mr. Napier was born November 2, 1932 to William O. and Tracie Bartello Napier. Over the course of his life, Harold held a variety of jobs. He worked as a truck driver for Harvest Brand, was the City Manager of Cherokee, KS, was a newspaper deliveryman for the Morning Sun with a route that covered the surrounding area and was the cemetery manager for both Mt. Olive and Highland Park Cemeteries, where he eventually retired. Harold also served three years in the US Army where he achieved the rank of E5-Sergeant and received an honorable discharge. 

He married Jackie Ray Daniels Napier. Together they had one child, Beverly Jo Ellis. Harold later married Jane Murray and he adopted one child, Kevin Napier, and also had three stepchildren, Brian Murray, Brent Murray, and JoEllen Marquardt. They later divorced and remained friends for the remainder of his life. Harold also had a love for the lake. Although he couldn’t swim, he spent countless hours driving a boat around Grand Lake, teaching kids to water ski. One of his favorite things to do was run trotlines. Harold lived at many places around the Grand Lake area throughout his life. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Ellis, a son, Kevin Napier, two stepsons, one stepdaughter, five sisters, Ilene Turner, Wanda Endicott, Margaret McGuire, Tracie Miller, and Jeanie Culp, one brother, Allen Napier, five grandchildren, Dane, Nolan, Sabrina, Tommy, and Suzy, and many other grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jackie, two brothers, William (Bill) Napier and Vernon Napier, and a sister, Louise Arlent.

Merritt Vandris

Merritt Lee Vandris, 78, of Pittsburg, passed away at 8:11 a.m. Monday, December 25, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital.

He was born December 3, 1939 at West Mineral, Kansas, the son of Merritt and Ruth (McGuire) Vandris. He was a lifetime area resident and graduated from Pittsburg High School.

In his youth, Merritt enjoyed playing football, baseball and running track. After high school, he started racing motorcycles professionally. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. Mr. Vandris worked at Dickey Clay for eleven years. He was also a country music dance instructor, worked construction and had numerous other careers.

Survivors include a son, Brad Vandris of Rogers, Arkansas; two daughters, Debra Anthony of Pittsburg and Kim Vandris of Rogers, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Jason Morgan, Kristen Anthony, and Katelyn Wieneke; and a great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Morgan. He also had the support of many life-long friends.

Merritt is best remembered for his passion for life. Everyday was a new adventure with him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant siblings, and a son, Craig Vandris.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday (December 29) at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor. Annie Ricker officiating. Interment will be in the Star Cemetery, near West Mineral, Kansas. Debra Keller

Debra Kay (Rink) Keller was born on February 16, 1953 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Bill M. Rink and Edna M. (Allred) Rink. 

She attended Pittsburg Public Schools and graduated from Pittsburg State University. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. 

In 1972, she was united in marriage with Bob Keller. She and Bob lived in several places while he was employed by McNally Pittsburg including Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where they made several life-long friends. In the mid-1980s, Bob and Debbie returned to their hometown allowing Debbie the pleasure of teaching fourth grade at St. Mary’s Elementary. Debbie and Bob had three children, Jeramy, Lindsey, and Joe. In 1993, Debbie made her final move to Branson, Missouri. She spent nearly 20 years as an Assistant Professor at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. While at C of O, she was also Assistant Director of the Child Development Center where she graced many children with her kind heart, loving spirit, and great generosity. For the past seven years, she served on the school board for Branson Public Schools. Debbie was creative, loved to crochet, make crafts, and decorate her home for every holiday. She and Bob attended many sporting events watching their children and grandchildren compete. She could often be found with her friends and family on Table Rock Lake relaxing, tubing, and just spending time together. Debbie made friends everywhere she went, always offering a smile and kind words.

Debbie passed away on December 19, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her daughter Lindsey, her parents, mother and father-in-law, and niece, Marny.

She is survived by her husband, their sons Jeramy Keller of Pittsburg, Kansas; Joe Keller (destination unknown); three grandsons, Lake, Kannon, and Gus; three brothers, Billy Rink, Terry Rink, and Dennis Rink; one sister, Jeannine Standlee; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Lourdes in Pittsburg, Kansas on December 27, 2017 at 11 a.m. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SMC Annual Appeal. A private family burial will be held in Branson, Missouri at a later date.

Brad Long

James Braden Long, age 39 of rural Columbus, KS, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017.

Brad was born August 14, 1978 in Joplin, MO to James Henry Long Jr and Rebecca Jane Grebe Long. They survive.

Brad graduated from Labette County High School in Altamont, KS and lived in Parsons, Altamont, and Commerce, OK before moving to rural Columbus to help his father with farm work.

He was an avid historian of his family and world events and would gladly talk in detail about almost any subject. He loved the rural, farm life and he and his son, Henry Vance Long loved to garden. He was a big man with a big heart.

His grandparents, James Henry and Mildred Alberta Long, and Uncle George Long, preceded Brad in death. In addition to his parents Brad is survived by his son, Henry Vance Long (mother Courtney McAlvain), and grandparents Jack and Lucille Grebe. He is also survived by three brothers, Johnathon Long, (wife, Kristen and daughter Hattie), Nathaniel Long, and Andrew Long (daughter Gabby) and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena, KS is handling cremation arrangements. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund for his son Henry will be established; information can be obtained from family members

Wayne Austin

Wayne E. Austin, 56, of Pittsburg, passed away Monday, December 18, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital. 

He was born October 9, 1961, the son of Gerald and Geraldine (Wuerdeman) Austin. He attended Pittsburg area schools and graduated from Southeast High School. Wayne then attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. Membership was held in the St. John Lutheran Church. 

Survivors include a sister, Karen Austin of St. Paul, Minnesota; two nieces, Rachel McKibben and Kristina McKibben of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Patricia Swartz

Patricia M. Swartz, 83, of Rogers, Arkansas and former a resident of Cherokee, Kansas, passed away December 15, 2017 at Ashley Health and Rehab in Rogers, Arkansas.

She was born August 1, 1934 in Gallup, New Mexico. The daughter of Lela Caresio Holden, Rolla Holden and John Irvin.
She married Kenneth Swartz on August 9, 1952 in Bentonville, Arkansas. He proceeded her in death June 1991. She was a source of strength and inspiration to her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. To her grandchildren, she was known as Monnie. She was kind, loving, caring and generous to everyone she met.  Patricia was a member at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg. She was a member of the Democratic Party. 

Survivors include two daughters--Diana Allen of Centerton, Arkansas, Joyce Bartley and her husband Jack, of Bentonville, Arkansas; two sisters--Vivian Pelham and her husband Jerry of Tallahassee, Florida; and Peggy Coltrane and her husband Donnie, of Weir, Kansas; brother-in-law, Johnnie Swartz, and his wife Rita, of Pittsburg, Kansas; seven grandchildren--Eric Stanley, who she helped raise, and his wife Amanda, of Pittsburg, Kansas; Melissa Swartz of Pittsburg, Kansas; Sarah Swartz and her husband Sonny of Miramar Beach, Florida; Brandy Tuttle and her husband Jackie of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Sarah Bartley of Bentonville, Arkansas; Kevin Bartley and his wife Mindy of Neosho, Missouri; and Dustin Bartley and his wife Julane of Bella Vista Arkansas; 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her lifelong friends the “YaYa’s”--Shirley Clark, Darlene Copenhaver, Barbara Schountz and Noralee Chadd. 

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, and son Allen Swartz who died March, 2010.

Memorial services will be 11:00 am on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS, with Father Devin Burns, officiating.

Kirk James

SFC Kirk Jonathan James, 77, of Frontenac, KS, died December 13, 2017, at his home following an illness. 

Kirk was born September 28, 1940, in Portsmouth, VA, the son of Leslie L. and Lucille L. (Zeltman) James. Kirk grew up and attended various schools throughout the United States as a US Navy “brat,” graduating from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, NY, in 1958. Kirk joined the Marine Corps
following high school and later joined the US Army in 1965. He was a gallant hero in the Vietnam War and his actions saved many fellow soldiers in combat, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery during Operation Attleboro. As a result of his gallantry, a street was named for him in South Vietnam. He was the only living soldier from that battle to receive the honor. His most significant medals include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was also selected to introduce Bob Hope during a USO show at the home of the "Big Red One" in Vietnam on Christmas day 1966. Always very modest with his accomplishments, he would find himself embarrassed when people recounted his deeds.

In May of 1970, Kirk married Florence Roxanna D’Andrea of Riverside, CT; they later divorced in April of 1980. After moving to Greenwich, CT, he earned a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY, and served in law enforcement for the Greenwich Police Department for 14 years until 1982. After a short break in service he re-enlisted as an Army Ranger right before the age cutoff. He completed airborne school and later became a counterintelligence agent. He retired after 20 years of active military duty and 6 years of reserve duty in 1995. Following retirement he moved to Pittsburg, KS. Kirk always held membership with the New Utrecht Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, NY. Kirk was also a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the Association of Retired Police Officers, a member of the First Infantry Division and the 28th Division, and was known to be passionate about animals with his support of the ASPCA. He enjoyed playing softball, hunting, fishing, poker with fellow veterans, and attending Legion of Valor reunions. He cherished his children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his children Leslie A. Gavin and husband Kerry of Stamford, CT, and Elizabeth K. Holcomb and husband Matthew of Fairfield, CT; brother John James and wife Candy of Pittsburg, KS; grandchildren Quinn and Dylan Gavin and Mason and Riley Holcomb; niece and nephew Kali Christiansen and husband Drew of Frontenac, KS, and Ben James and wife Jessica of Pittsburg, KS; great niece and nephews Waylon, Livia, and Jackson; and his dog “Joe.” Kirk was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved dog “Cracker.”

Per Kirk’s wishes he will be laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, at a later date where military honors will be conducted. Sherry Bulot

Sherry L. Bulot, 66, of Frontenac, passed away at 3:23 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the Via Christi Village.

She was born December 30, 1950 at Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Jim and Illa M. (Baldwin) Wofford. She attended schools in Porterville, Kansas and then in Pittsburg, where she graduated from Pittsburg High School.

On January 25, 1985, she was united in marriage to Mike Bulot at the Timmons Chapel.

She worked for TWA in Kansas City for fifteen years, before moving to Pittsburg. She then worked at AAA Travel Agency until they closed. Sherry went to work for WATCO, where she worked for 15 years until she retired.

Sherry had a love and passion for her horses and the horse show world. She enjoyed showing and raising horses and was actively involved for many years with the Tri-State Association, the Ozark Quarter Horse Association, and the Lucky Rider’s 4-H Horse Club. She volunteered many hours in each association and at the Crawford County Fair.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Bulot of the home; two sons, Grant and Carter of the home; her mother, Illa Wofford of Pittsburg; a brother, Bob Wofford and his wife, Shirley of Warsaw, Missouri; her brother-in-law, Brian Bulot; niece, Rayna Bulot; nephew, Blake Bulot; and two good friends, Kim Duncan and Lisa Butts.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 21) at the Brenner Mortuary with Fr Tom Stroot officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Abbey, Pittsburg. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. Bobbie Brooks

Bobbie Dean Brooks, 78, of Pittsburg, passed away at 1:20 p.m., Friday, December 15, 2017, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg. 

He was born May 31, 1939, at Pittsburg, KS, the son of Lawrence and Goldie (Karnes) Brooks. On July 20, 1957, he was united in marriage to Norma Fossman at Miami, OK. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2013. Mr. Brooks worked as a maintenance way for the Kansas City Southern Railroad before his retirement. He loved to hunt and fish and play fast pitch softball. 

Mr. Brooks is survived by two sons, Dennis Brooks and his wife, Laurie of Pittsburg, KS, and Richard Brooks and his wife, Tami of Olathe, KS, three grandchildren, Bobby Brooks, Jessica Brooks and Jenny Brooks and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Orval Brooks and Harold Brooks and one sister, Mildred Wolff. 

A graveside service is set for 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, with Pastor Annie Ricker conducting the service. The family will receive friends before the service at the Brenner Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The casket will remain closed. Cookie Buchanan

Agnes “Cookie” Buchanan, 75, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 12:09 a.m., Thursday, December 14, 2017, at her residence. 

She was born October 14, 1942, at Arma, KS, the daughter of Desire and Mary (Mikrut) Falliaux. She attended Arma and Pittsburg Schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1960. She resided in the area her entire life. 

On September 15, 1962, she was united in marriage to Robert Buchanan at Pittsburg, KS. He survives of the home. Mrs. Buchanan worked many years at Joe's Café and later was a daycare owner/operator. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by, one son Bob Buchanan and his wife, Becky of McCune, KS, one granddaughter, Norma Buchanan and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, Mary "Mootsie" Jones, Geraldine "Gerry" Beasley, Beverly Morgan, Alberta "Susie" Stotts, Caroline "Dodie" Bookout and Pauline "Lady Paul" Martinous, and an infant brother. The family would like to thank Krystal Page and family for their help in her care for the past six months. 

A graveside service is set for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at the Crocker Cemetery, Pittsburg, with Kelly Klubak conducting the service. Friends are requested to meet at the cemetery. Larry Malle

Larry Ray Malle, 76 of Cherokee, KS died at 3:30 am Friday, December 8, 2017 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born September 19, 1941 in Pittsburg, KS the son of John L. and Hazel P. (Hudson) Malle.

On July 1, 1963 he was united in marriages to Beverly Morrison in Miami, OK; she survives him of the home.

Larry worked at Dickey Clay for several years before going to work for the U.S.D. 247 in Cherokee in the Maintenance Department.

He was a former member of the Church of God (13th & Tucker), in the last few years he attended the First Baptist Church of Cherokee. He was also a longtime member of the Cherokee Gun Club.

Cleyone Hempen

Cleyone Hempen, 78, of Pittsburg Ks, passed away December 10, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

She was born June 28, 1939 in Neodesha, Kansas the daughter of Alfred and Mildred (Coats) Tindle.
She married the love of her life, Ronald Hempen on March 27, 1968 in Fredonia, Kansas.

Cleyone was always willing to help people in need and loved cooking for anyone who came to her home.

She was an active member at the Liberty Baptist Church. 

Survivors include husband; Ronald Hempen of Pittsburg, KS, son James Ballinger of Waveland, Mississippi, three daughters; Debra (Bill) Moat, Christy (Bill) Hull, April (David) Monohon, brother; Donald Tindle of Tennessee, 4 sisters; Betty Struckmeyer of Arizona, Jeannie Taylor of Los Angles, California, Gloria Tindle of Neodesha, Kansas, Stacey Tindle of Arizona, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS, with the Pastor Richard King, officiating. A visitation will be held an hour prior to the graveside service at Bath- Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg.

Bob Peternell

On Tuesday morning, December 5th, 2017 our father and best friend, Robert Eugene Peternell passed from this earthly world and into God’s arms.

He was born to John and Jennie (Saia) Peternell in Franklin, Kansas on September 6th, 1941. As a child he served as an Alter Boy in the local Catholic Church, and later graduated from Arma High School in 1959. Bob enlisted in the Army and served in the Kansas National Guard from Jan 15, 1961 to July 14, 1961, receiving an honorable discharge upon his departure from the service. Bob worked as a local pipefitter and welder with local 664 for B.F. Goodrich from 1970 to 1986, at which time the company closed. Bob then worked for Benso Refrigeration until retirement. After retiring, Bob returned to work, this time for himself opening, operating and eventually becoming known throughout the United States for his array of Italian foods called the Peternelli Sausage Company.
Bob married Antionnette Penrod in 1965 at St. Bridges Catholic Church in Scammon, Kansas. Bob had 2 girls, Lisa M. Peternell More, and Tina M. Peternell Gantt.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother, and father. Bob leaves behind his wife, Antionnette Peternell of the home, Lisa More (daughter) and husband Chip More of Pleasanton, Kansas, and Tina M. Gantt and husband Larry Gantt of Scammon, Kansas.

Bob also leaves behind seven grandchildren, & six great-grandchildren. The seven grandchildren are Blynn Hill and wife Kayla of Fort Scott, Kansas, Ashley Hill Boddy and husband Jason of Pleasanton, Kansas, Austin More Hill of Kansas City, Abigail M. More of Pleasanton, Kansas, Kaitlyn More of Pleasanton, Kansas. Kayla McManis Fox and husband Nick of Roseland, Kansas. Tatum McManis of Bentonville, Arkansas. The six great grandchildren are Landon Hill, Maylynn Hill of Fort Scott, Kansas, Isabella Boddy, Madalyn Boddy of Pleasanton, Kansas, Braylea Fox, Leighton Fox of Roseland, Kansas.

Bob’s passions and hobbies outside of his family were his sausage making, woodworking, motorcycle, and his corvette. Bob was always telling stories of his youth, his family, his love for his country, and the many veterans who served.

Bob was a past member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Mirza Shriners of Pittsburg, Kansas. Bob was also highly involved with the American Legion, and was a past Director of the American Legion Riders of the Cherokee Post in Cherokee, Kansas. Bob was also Past Director as well as a Charter Member American Legion Riders in Pittsburg, Kansas. Bob was also one of the first 45 members to join the Kansas Patriot Guard, and his love for his country and veterans was evident throughout his entire life.

Funeral services will be 2pm Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, Ks. Family will receive friends from 1pm-2pm before the service at the funeral home. The funeral procession will be a “Last Ride” led by the Kansas Patriot Guard and will continue from the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home to his final resting place among family at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Frontenac, Kansas.

Pallbearers are Harold White, Ray Saia, Joe Carlson, Balta Guzman, Don Wright, Don Benson. Honorary Terry Fleury and Bill McManis Jr. 

Bob will be passionately missed by all family and friends; however, we know he will be “Riding Wild” with our Lord in Heaven. We all love you very much.

Bobby Kennett

Bobby D. Kennett, 76, of Pittsburg, passed away at 1:39 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Via Christi Hospital. 

He was born December 19, 1940 at Pittsburg, the son of Willard Bruce and Lucille Ruth (Beckett) Kennett. He attended and graduated from College High School and attended Pittsburg State University. 

On September 15, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sandra K. Rezen at Pittsburg. She survives at the family home. Mr. Kennett worked as a police officer for the Pittsburg Police Department. He then became an engineer for the Kansas City Southern Railroad until he retired. Membership was held in the Countryside Christian Church and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. 

In addition to his wife, Sandra, he is survived by a son, Steve Kennett and his wife, Jennifer of Olathe, Kansas; a daughter, Sherri Houfek and her husband Craig of Olathe, Kansas; a sister, Marge Rice and her husband, Dale of Opolis, Kansas; and five grandchildren, Kacey and Brett Kennett and Drew, Hunter and Hayli Houfek. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gale Wayne Kennett and Billy Gene Kennett and a sister, Janis L. Cronister. 

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday (Dec. 11) at the Brenner Mortuary with Dan Muter officiating. Scripture readings will be given by Bryce Hotchkiss. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. The family suggests memorials be given to Angels Among Us. Madeline Moutz

Madeline Carol Moutz, 79, of Chicopee, KS died at 10:06 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017 at her home. Madeline was born July 6, 1938 in Chicopee, KS to Ferdinando and Angelina (Cattelino) Scaramucci. She graduated from Crawford County Community High School, where she was crowned the Annual Queen in 1955 as a senior. Following high school, she graduated from Mt. Carmel School of Nursing.

On April 12, 1958, she married Rudolph “Rudy” Moutz at St. Barbara’s in Chicopee, KS. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2008. Madeline worked at Mt. Carmel in OB and helped move into the new hospital. She worked for Dr. Wood and Dr. Erikson. She also worked at SEK-CAP in head start for 30 years and the Crawford County Health Department. She was the first recipient of the Award in recognition of 30 years of outstanding efforts in Public Health Community Service as a Health Services Specialist for SEK-CAP Head Start, presented by Crawford County Health Department and Board of Health in 2008. She was a member of both Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Frontenac and Our Lady of Lourdes of Pittsburg, where she was a volunteer in each office and was active in both Altar Societies. She was a former member of St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Chicopee and worked at Our Lady of Lourdes goodwill.

Additional survivors include her son Scott A. Moutz of Chicopee, KS; a daughter Julie Jenkins of Ocala, FL; five grandchildren, Johnny Moutz of Girard, KS, Savannah VanTassel of Ocala, FL, Stephanie Robinson of Chicopee, KS, Asher Jenkins of Ocala, FL, Aaron Jenkins of Ocala, FL; 2 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Madeline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, John F. Moutz, three sisters, Linda Ferneti, Maria Ferneti and Wilma Widner, a brother, Alfred Scaramucci and a nephew Casper Ferneti.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 7) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brenner Mortuary. Henry Foote

Henry O. Foote, Sr. 80 of Coffeyville, Kansas formally of the Picher/Commerce area passed away Friday December 1, 2017 at his daughter’s home in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Henry was born September 11, 1937 in Amsterdam, Missouri to J.C. and May Orpha (Harry) Foote.
He married Arlene November 1, 1965 in Warner, Oklahoma and they renewed their vows on July 4, 2001 in Corona, Kansas Arlene precedes him in death.

Henry served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division during Vietnam, he was an entertainer, drove for CFI and worked for Baxter Vault before retiring.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents three brothers Frankie Bolding, Donald Foote, Aaron Foote one sister Ellender Kirk.

Survivors four sons Henry Charles Foote of Baxter Springs, KS Michael and wife JoAnn foote of Baxter Springs, KS Henry O. Foote Jr. of Baxter Springs, KS and Richard and wife Terri Foote of Joplin, MO two daughters Jeanette and husband Jim Choate of Branson, MO and Rebecka “Becky” Kristine and husband Jim of Coffeeville, KS one sister Anna Owens of Hannibal, MO 26 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Services will held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday December 5, 2017 at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Commerce, Oklahoma with Bro Alvin Kirk officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Treece, Kansas under the direction of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Commerce, Oklahoma. Stan Gavin

Stanley (Stan) Douglas Gavin, 68, passed away Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO following a long illness.

He was born October 15, 1949 to loving parents, Frank and Elizabeth Ann (Schirk) in Independence, Kansas. He was the youngest of three children.

He attended and graduated from St. Mary's Colgan High School in 1967 where he played basketball and baseball. He went on to attend and graduate from Pittsburg State University with a degree in accounting. He served our country in the Army National Guard during college.

He later owned and operated his own business. As a retired adult, he enjoyed reading (especially crime novels), playing golf, and watching sports on TV. He was an avid fan of the KC Royals, KC Chiefs, and Kansas Jayhawks Basketball.

Stan will be remembered for his intelligence, his quick wit, his fun sense of humor, and his love for his children and grandchildren. His greatest earthly treasure was his wonderful family.

Stan is survived by his children, Lisa Dungan (Husband L.J.) of Pittsburg, KS; Kenny Gavin (Wife Dina) of Rogers, AR; and Caiti Gavin of Rogers, AR. Stan is further survived by his grandchildren Kaleb, Sophia, Bella, and Bexley. Left also to grieve are his sister Cindy Schmitz (Husband Dave) of Houston, TX, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Stan’s cousin Bob Schirk was especially close and helpful to Stan during his final months. Stan was preceded in death by his wife Donna (Haraughty) Gavin, his brother Michael Gavin, his parents, and his children’s mother, Dian Loy.

A celebration of Stan’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 7) at the Brenner Mortuary. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to a fund set up for his four grandchildren to contribute to their future education. David Hamilton

David Allan Hamilton 55, passed away 9:54 pm, Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at his home in Pittsburg, KS, following a long battle with lung cancer. David was born July 14, 1962, in New Orleans, LA, the son of Glenn Allan and Joan Shead Hamilton. His childhood was spent in Leavenworth, KS, and he moved with his family to Pittsburg in 1978. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1980. 

He enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1980 and served the next 13 years in various parts of the world. One of his favorite assignments was the three years he spent in Holy Loch, Scotland, where he was able to have his family with him. He reenlisted in the Naval Reserve in 2005 and served in Bahrain, receiving the War on Terrorism medal. After leaving the Navy, David became a truck driver and drove over two million miles without an accident. He worked for Schneider, Swift and Transport America as a driver and /or dispatcher, retiring for health reasons from Transport America in May of 2017. 

David is survived by his three children: Andrew of Joplin, MO; Kevin (Ashley) of Columbia, TN; and Megan (Kyle) Stout of St. Charles, IL; grandchildren Thomas Hamilton and Nora Stout, with another expected in March; his mother Joan Hamilton of Pittsburg, KS; sister Lisa Hamilton Harris (Keith) of Hepler, KS; niece Molli Harris; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and the mother of his children, Sherry Zachman, Pulaski, TN. David was preceded in death by his father and grandmother, Mary Ann Shead. 

Funeral Services will be 10:00 am, Monday. December 4, 2017, at the Trinity Baptist Church, 301 E. Washington, Pittsburg, KS, with Pastor Jordan Hodges officiating. Burial will follow at the Ft. Scott National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS. Full Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy. Shirley Munsell

Shirley J. Munsell 83, of Pittsburg, KS passed away 5:10pm Thursday November 30, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Frontenac, KS following an illness. 

Shirley was born February 17, 1934 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of Chester “Lefty” and Gladys Marie (Brown) Pryor. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Pittsburg High School in 1952. 

On October 9, 1954 Shirley married Chesley Munsell at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS; he preceded her in death on May 14, 2015. 

Shirley attended the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg, KS; she was a member of TOPS; loved bingo and her family was the most important thing in her life. 

Survivors include her children Chuck Munsell and wife Karen of Pittsburg, KS, Bev Wright and companion Mike Weinberg of Pittsburg, KS and Monica Hatfield-Blake of Wichita, KS; siblings Connie Phillips of Pittsburg, KS, Mike Pryor of Pittsburg, KS and Janie Collins of Girard, KS; grandchildren Eric Munsell, Mike Munsell, Adrian Murray, Corbin Murray, Haven Hatfield and Bran Dan Hatfield; in addition 12 great-great grandchildren. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Terry Pryor, Chet Pryor and Donna Flater.
