Paul Woods

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Paul Edward Woods died at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Via Christie Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas not far from where he was born in Columbus, Kansas, February 16, 1946.

His parents were Ray and Gladys Woods. Paul was the baby of four, sassy sisters; Marie Sharp, Dorothy Gideon, Margie Castanida, Wilma Waits. All are deceased.

Paul had many cousins, nephews, and nieces who were like siblings to him, so he never had to look far for someone to play with or to find a little mischievousness.

Of his home is his partner of thirty years who took good care him, Joanne Buyea and daughter Nicole Woods-Buyea.

He graduated from Columbus High School where he met his previous wife, Lana Woods. They remained friends throughout his life.

They had three children; Daughter, Paula Pepin Husband, John Pepin; Grandchildren, Ian Pepin, Oliver Pepin, Lawrence, Kansas; Son, Daren Woods, Pittsburg, Kansas; Daughter,Heidi Woods; Grandchildren; Grace Adams, Sid Adams, Lawrence, Kansas

Paul enjoyed being outdoors and shared this love with his children. Fishing in the pits, swimming in lakes. He had a soft spot for dogs, and horses, and surprisingly a cat or two.

Staff Sergeant, Paul Woods, of Company A, 891st Engineer Battalion, Kansas Army National Guard, Pittsburg, Kansas proudly served his country for forty years until he retired February 16, 2006. He received many awards and medals, one being the Army Achievement Medal. He was known for his broad knowledge of procedures, professional competence, initiative and sound nature. And, he also just really loved the camaraderie of his fellow soldiers.

He was a long-haul truck driver for most of his life, but always returned home to his roots in Southeast Kansas where he lived his whole life. He traveled the continental US multiple times behind the wheel of a big rig, a Kenworth if he had a choice. He had a nearly perfect driving record and did all this the good ol' fashion way with road signs, maps and "by feel", he said. At one time he drove a tour bus all the way to Alaska and Canada. He enjoyed this job because he was able to sleep in a bed nearly every night and take a few backroads.

He also worked on a dairy farm outside of Scammon, Kansas where he was a good steward of the cattle and farm ground.

Paul died peacefully surrounded by his family after a morning of listening to the songs he'd have listened to heading down the road. AM country radio tunes and gospel. His children's voices in song as they sang their favorite songs to him. The scent of a favorite food in the air; biscuits and gravy; and coffee, of course.

His family invites friends to bring their stories and pictures to a celebration of life in the near future.

Keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down

Mickey Hart

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Michael Dale Hart, 4/18/1963- 09/18/2019

Our daddy wouldn’t have wanted a boring obituary and he once told me while reading the paper “man, just reading these things would kill a person” So in his unique way, I’m writing this “Mickey style.”

He was loving and so kind,
He’s the most unique man you’d ever find.
He was like this from the start,
His name is Mickey Hart.
A hunter of rocks and of gold,
About this history we were told,
Deciphering maps of Jesse James,
Our dad’s a man with many names.
He loved to cast a line,
On his fried crappie we would dine,
He was our biggest fan,
His name was fisherman.
He would talk about our Savior
And prayer time he would saver.
His Bible always out,
He reminded us that’s what life’s about.
He was compassionate and caring,
With others always sharing.
With us he will always be a part,
his name is Mick Hart.
A story teller of his time,
With his written songs he would rhyme,
He was a man with great ambition,
His name is great musician.
He loved to brag on his grandkids,
He would hug them & say “you know, they’re gettin big!”
He loved them more than they’d ever see,
His name is Poppy.
He kissed us and loved us so,
More than the world will ever know,
He was never one to follow a fad
His name is, our sweet dad.

Elizabeth Jo “Betty Jo” (Blair) Peak, 83, of Girard, passed away at 4:37 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2019, in her home surrounded by her family.

Betty Jo was born March 8, 1936, in Girard, Kansas, to Gerald “Red” and Margaret “Toots” (Neet) Blair.

Betty Jo grew up in the Radley area, and attended Harmony (Frog Holler) grade school. She graduated from Girard High School in 1954. She and her high school sweetheart “Jimmy” were married on November 13, 1956.

After living in Augusta and Beloit, she and Jim returned to Girard in 1961 to raise their family and purchased Peak Auto Service in 1964. According to Jim, he was “thankful to BJ for doing most of the work in raising five great kids.”

Family was the most important thing to Jim and Betty Jo. Together they set an example of unconditional love and devout faith in raising their five children, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren (with one on the way).

Betty Jo was a talented artist and enjoyed painting watercolor pieces in her art studio behind the family home. Her artwork hangs on the walls of all of her children’s homes, and the family especially cherishes the pieces Grandma painted them for Christmas and birthdays in recent years. She passed her artistic ability and creativity on to many of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Humility, selflessness, strength and hard work are just a few of the words her family used to describe her, and of course they would not forget her witty sense of humor.

Survivors are sons Mark (Trish) Peak and Greg (Diana) Peak, daughters Mitzi (Jerome) Beezley, Dana (Roscoe) Newton, and Kelly Peak. She cherished her twelve grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, including: Lynn (Joe) Fleming, Connor, Molly, and Rowan; Jessica (Dustin) Dunbar, and Charlie; Alixandra Beezley; Zachary (Megan) Newton, Brooks and Holden; Seth (Ashley) Newton, Kelcyn, Graham, and Reid; Abby (Caleb) Geiger, Adrian, Avery, and Arlo; Madison Peak; Bailey (Brady) Kyle, and baby Kyle; Hunter (Kaylee) Peak; Cody Bradshaw; and Carley Bradshaw. She is also survived by one brother, Don (Sherry) Blair of Girard, Kansas.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Peak, and grandson, Travis Newton.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Joann Grotheer for her compassionate care.

Kara Niemeir

(From Cheney-Witt Funeral Chapel)

Kara Rebekah Niemeir, a resident of Lenexa, Kansas, age 37, beloved daughter of Doug and Diana Niemeir, and beloved sister of Kristin Niemeir passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, September 13, 2019, at Ascension Via Christi emergency room in Fort Scott, Kansas. At the time, Kara was staying with her parents in their home for a few days in Fort Scott as she recuperated from a knee surgery.

Kara was born on August 27, 1982, in Newton, Kansas. She was welcomed home by one sister, Kristin, 4 years her senior, and immediately they became “best buds”, despite the age difference. This never changed and not a day went by that they didn’t talk, no matter how many miles separated them. At the age of 2, Kara moved with her family to Fort Scott, where she attended the public schools and graduated from Fort Scott High School in 2001. After high school graduation, she attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, and graduated with honors from there in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Systems Engineering; then in 2007 a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering. Kara enjoyed school and always excelled in her studies.

After college, Kara began working at Agricultural Engineering Associates, Inc. in Uniontown, KS. She worked there for 11 years, from 2007 until 2018. During that time, she had the opportunity to advance her engineering knowledge in many areas as well as work with some wonderful colleagues. Also during that time, in 2009, she passed her state boards qualifying her as a licensed professional engineer.

In September, 2018, she began work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Hydrology section of the Kansas City district. She had just completed a year of working there and was very happy, feeling she had found her niche in the Corps and some really special colleagues with whom to work. She had also recently found and purchased a home in Lenexa, Kansas -- a home in which she was looking forward to living for many years.

Kara turned her life over to Jesus when she was only 3 years old, and she followed Him faithfully, never looking back, for the rest of her life. Wherever she moved, whether in Lincoln, Nebraska as a college student; in Iola, Kansas, where she lived while working at Ag Engineering; or most recently, in the Kansas City area, she looked immediately for a “Bible believing church” with which to become involved. It is a wonderful blessing to her family, in the tremendous pain of her loss, to know we will see her again when it is our time to follow her home to Heaven.

Kara leaves behind her immediate family, whom she cherished and loved deeply: her mother and father, Doug and Diana Niemeir of Fort Scott, Kansas, and her sister, Kristin Niemeir of Oak Point, Texas. She further leaves behind numerous much-loved aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a plethora of well-loved friends.

Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 21st at the Rinehart Christian Church, 9443 S. 900 Rd., Richards, Missouri. Burial will follow in the Deerfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Cru Missions; the ministry of Anne and Ryan Mansfield, missionaries and dear friends of Kara, whom she loved and financially supported. They work in mission fields around the world under the auspicious of Global Aid Network (GAiN). Donations may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.
