Toby Nighswonger

Tobiah G. “Toby” Nighswonger, 45, of Fort Scott, passed away Sunday evening, October 27, 2019, at the Medicalodge Nursing Home. He was born September 19, 1974, in Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Thomas Henry and Glenda Frances (Painter) Nighswonger.

Toby graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1993. He graduated from the Police Academy in 2002. He was a Police Officer here in Fort Scott for 13 years, during which time he was a School Resource Officer for U.S.D. 234 and an advocate for the S.A.F.E. program at F.S.H.S. He was well known for his sense of humor and his love of the outdoors. He will be deeply missed.








He is survived by his wife, Nicole Pellett of the Home, four sons, Michael Nighswonger and Alli of Fort Scott, Thomas Nighswonger and Brian Nighswonger both of Fort Scott, and Jacob Pellett of the home, two sisters, Vicky Nihiser and Lewis of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Debby Myers of Fort Scott, and four brothers, Pete Nighswonger and Kristin of Lenexa, Kansas, Joe Nighswonger and Marcy of Osawatomie, Kansas, Kenny Nighswonger of Frontenac, Kansas and Chris Nighswonger of Springfield, Missouri, and his parents, of Fort Scott. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Tim Myers. The family would also like to recognize Jannah Farrington, as well as Wade and Julie Pellett as special caregivers throughout his illness.

Following Cremation, Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 1, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening, October 31, 2019, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Ramona Fitzgerald

Ramona L. (Gabern) Fitzgerald, 58, Pittsburg, KS, passed on Friday, October 25, 2019 at Freeman Hospital after a long illness. Ramona was born on March 2, 1961 to Raymond and Dulcie (Turben) Lowe in Bethesda, Maryland.

She worked for many years in nursing facilities and through home health agencies, most recently for Medicalodge, before she became disabled.

She was married to Rick Gabern, Scammon, for many years. He preceded her in death. She had two children, Beth Gabern (Chris Summit), of the home, and Ricky Gabern, Scammon, as well as a bonus son, Jesse Gabern, Cherokee, and four grandsons Kaleb, Zayne, and Jaxson Gabern and Deklyn Summit.

She had many names in her life, including Shortcake, but her favorite was Nana. Her grandson and bumblebee, Deklyn Summit, was the light of her life.








She was preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, three sisters, Ruth Lowe, Patricia Lowe, and Dulcie Kinder, and one brother, Raymond Lowe, and sister-in-law, Brenda Hale. 

She is survived by her children and grandchildren as well as her sister Sharon King, Amarillo, TX, Mark Lowe, Amarillo, TX, and Charles Lowe, Phoenix, AZ, sisters-in-law Sandra Jameson, Cherokee, and Tonia (Chuck) Turner, Scammon, mother-in-law Vernetta Gabern, Scammon, friend Lisa Rehm, Weir, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life dinner will take place at the Homer Cole Center, 3003 N. Joplin Street, Pittsburg, on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 5 to 7 pm.

Branka Gomez

Branka Gomez (Kousek), 85, of Riverton, Kansas passed away on October 26, 2019.

Branka was born in Popovaca, Croatia the former Yugoslavia on July 15, 1934 to Anna and Josip Kousek. She lived there until she moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1954 at the age of 20 with her mother where she volunteered at the Salvation Army and played basketball. She eventually became employed at Ace Electric working on the assembly line and working her way up to Manufacturing Supervisor. In 1983 Branka moved with the company to Columbus Kansas and proceeded to receive a degree in Business and Industrial Supervision from Labette Community College in the late 1980’s.

Branka was married to Bonifacio Gomez on April 18 1959 in Kansas City, Missouri; they were married 36 years and had 2 daughters Debbie (Gomez) Obermeyer and Deanna (Gomez) Anderson.








Branka worked as a manufacturing line supervisor for Ace Electric for more than 40 years. She enjoyed going to work every day and socializing with her coworkers. Branka truly loved spending time with her family and friends and if shopping was involved, she could not be happier.

Branka is survived by her children Debbie Obermeyer and her husband Jim, and Deanna Anderson, her grandchildren Kaitlin Obermeyer and Adam Obermeyer and his wife Amanda.

Branka is preceded in death by her parents; husband Bonifacio Gomez; son-in-law, Charles Daren Anderson.

Joan Marquardt

Joan Marquardt, 84, of Parsons, passed away at 11:24 p.m., Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.

She was born December 7, 1934 in Parsons to James “Tiny” and Mary (Gamblian) Lyles.

Joan grew up and attended schools in Parsons. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and maintaining her yard. Joan would support her family and friends as much as she could through any time or circumstance in their life.

She was a previous member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Erie and has recently been attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Parsons where she enjoyed giving candy to the children who attend church.

Joan and Billy Dean Marquardt were married on August 11, 1957 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Parsons. He preceded her in death on November 23, 2018.








Survivors include two sons, Bradley Dean Marquardt, of Parsons and Mark A. Marquart, and his wife, Kim, of Parsons; seven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; four sister, Suzie Smith of Daytona Beach, FL, Shirley Lyles, of Kansas City, MO, Joyce Jones, of Texas, Junie Shannon, of Liberty, Kansas; brothers in law, Wayne Marquardt, and his wife, Pat and Paul Marquardt, all of Parsons; sister in law, Dolores Stiles, of Thayer.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Brenda Hoppock, a brother, Harry Lyles, three sisters, Janet Lyles, Micky Stephan and Betty Driskell.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons. Friends may call at their convenience.

Ann Oplotnik

Ann Brackett Oplotnik, 99, was called home October 20,2019. She passed peacefully at the Rhimes House, her Residential Care Home in Oklahoma City where she had resided since the death of her husband, Joe Oplotnik, in 2004.

Ann was born July 31, 1920 in Dunkirk, Kansas to Vincent and Christina Brackett, was raised there, and attended Dunkirk schools. She and Joe raised their family in Girard, Kansas where she later worked at the Girard High School Cafeteria, a job she truly enjoyed.

Ann Brackett married Joe Oplotnik on November 26, 1942 in Girard. She was a long-time member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and St. Michael’s Altar Society before her move to Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Christina and Vincent Brackett; her beloved husband of 61 years, Joe; four brothers: Felix, Tony, Joe and John Brackett; and her sister, Rita Coillot.







Ann leaves to cherish her memory a son, Jim Oplotnik and wife, Patricia of Oklahoma City, OK and a daughter, JoAnn Oplotnik Kohlmeyer and husband, Tim Kohlmeyer of Hot Springs Village, AR. She was blessed with eight wonderful grandchildren whom she loved very much: Jim Oplotnik, Jr and wife, Kim; Greg Oplotnik and wife, Darci; Jeff Oplotnik and wife, Debbie; Angela Oplotnik Sellers and husband , Colonel Kevin Sellers; Brent Oplotnik and wife, Marissa; Byron Kohlmeyer; Brad Kohlmeyer and wife, Katie; and Barry Kohlmeyer and partner, Ashley Lopez. She also was blessed with 13 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Ann will be lovingly remembered as well by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, November 16th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Rosary will be at 6:30PM Friday evening at the Smith- Carson- Wall Funeral Home. 

The family will receive friends following the rosary. St Michael’s Altar Society will be providing lunch in the St. Michael’s Hall following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ann’s name to St. Michael’s Altar Society.

Ronald Sheddrick

Ronald William Sheddrick went on to be with his Savior our Lord Jesus Christ on October 26, 2019 at Landmark Hospital in Joplin, MO. Ron was born on June 6, 1940 in Rich Hill, MO to Wilma and Donald Sheddrick. He moved to Oswego, KS as a young child. Ron graduated from Oswego High School in 1958 and Parsons Junior College in 1960. He married Chris Cox on November 19, 1961 in Parsons, KS.

Ron was drafted into the Army in 1962 and served until 1964. He worked at First National Bank in Oswego, KS from 1969 to 1987. Ron helped startup Community National Bank and Trust in Chanute, Kansas in 1987. He continued working there until his death. Ron and Chris returned to Oswego, KS in 2007 to be close to their children and grandchildren.








He is survived by his wife Chris of 58 years; daughter Keren Lowenstein and friend Kathi Murphy; son Kevin Sheddrick and wife Rochelle Sheddrick; grandchildren Drake, Madison, and Ryann Sheddrick; and sister Linda White and husband Charles White. Ron was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oswego, KS. He also served the church as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents Wilma and Donald Sheddrick, niece Erin White, aunts Elizabeth (Betty) Motsinger, Dorothy Hedges, Pauline Sheddrick and Dorthea (Dot) Eastland, uncles James Hedges, James Sheddrick, and Myron (Bud) Sheddrick, grandparents Myrtle and Louis Sheddrick, and cousins Jerry Eastland, Sue Vance, Mark Motsinger, Phillip Sheddrick and Billy Paul Hedges.

Community National Bank and Trust in Chanute, KS has established a scholarship endowment fund at Oswego High School in honor of Ron. A memorial has been established at First Baptist Church in Oswego, KS.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday November 1, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Oswego, Kansas, burial will follow at Oswego Cemetery. Virginia Coonrod

Virginia M. Coonrod, 83 of Pittsburg, KS died Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Medicalodge South in Pittsburg after losing her long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born March 3, 1936 in Crawford County, Ks the daughter of Charles F. and Susie (Garrett) Morris.

On January 15, 1955 she was united in marriage to Richard W. Coonrod in Arcadia, KS; he survives of the home.

Virginia worked at the United Mine Workers of America District #14 office as an executive secretary for many years.








She was a member of the Baptist Church of Arcadia where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Chapter #369.

Additional survivors include two sons: Keith (Kathy) Coonrod of McCune, KS and Dale (Dara) Coonrod of St. Paul, KS; a daughter Michele (Jaime) Verren of Pittsburg; a brother: Charlie Morris of Arma, KS; two sisters: Joyce Turner of Arma, and Charlotte Foust of Ft. Scott, KS; four grandchildren: Wes Coonrod, Clint Parsons, Tiffany Coonrod and Tracy Rhodes, along with numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Larry Morris.

Cotton Lunderman

Paul David “Cotton” Lunderman, Sr. age 89, passed away at 12:04 am, Wednesday, October 23, 2019 surrounded by his family at his home following an illness.

Cotton was born August 16, 1930 in Sarcoxie, MO. His parents were Ora James and Mary Lenora (Hinds) Lunderman. He had lived in Galena since 1957, moving from Sarcoxie, MO.

He graduated from Sarcoxie High School with the class of 1948. He entered the U S Air Corps in 1948 and after one year, he was recalled into service during the Korean War serving until 1953. He worked several years as a machinist at Vickers, Joplin, MO retiring in 1988. He was also a self-employed Rancher/Farmer.

Paul was a member of Celebration Baptist Church, Joplin, MO. His favorite pastime was working with his cattle herd.

He was married to Pansy M Burkey on October 5, 1950 at Fairfield, CA. She survives.
Additional survivors include 3 daughters, Konnie Collinsworth (Larry), Baxter Springs, KS, Marsha Shellabarger (Paul), Grove, OK, and Leigh Ann Barton (Gordon), Tulsa, OK; two sons, Paul David “PD” Lunderman Jr, (Cathy) Grove, OK and Dennis Lunderman, Wichita, KS; one sister, Donna Humphry (Bud), Miami, OK; 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Orabelle Triplett.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Monday, October 28, 2019 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, KS.

Nancy Margrave

Raised in California and Pittsburg, Kansas, Nancy Jeanne Margrave passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2019, following a long battle with breast cancer.

During her 35-year career at Pittsburg State University, Nancy received accolades as a model of proficiency and an innovator who was thorough, dedicated, professional and known for her philosophy: "if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing well." She went the extra mile for her students and student-athletes who affectionately called her "Mom" or "MaGrilla." Nancy was selected as the 1997 Equipment Manager of the Year by Athletic Management Magazine's Award of Excellence.







Nancy enjoyed fishing, camping, RVing, sewing and crafts. An avid gardener, Nancy grew beautiful daylilies and loved designing and maintaining a beautiful yard. She and Jim were "house flippers" before it was so popular, renovating, living in, and selling many homes in the 1960's-1980's.

Walter Foulk

Walter Earnest Foulk, age 91, resident of Arcadia, KS, died Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. He was the youngest of 7 siblings, born on April 4, 1928, in Arcadia, the son of John and Lydia Moore Foulk. Walter served in the Army during the Korean War.

He married Mary Alice Lynch in September 1955 and together they had four children (Connie, Lydia, Andrew and Lora). She preceded in death on September 10, 2018. He worked in Springfield, MO, beginning at the City Utilities, then Springfield Tablet, and finally for Litton Company. 

Walter enjoyed fishing, watching football, tinkering with lawn mowers, and visiting with local friends. He was a lifetime member of Arcadia American Legion Post #110 and a member of the Arcadia Christian Church.








Survivors include 3 children, Dorthy Lydia Baker, Springfield, MO, Andrew Foulk, Springfield, MO, and Lora Jean Pratt, West Alton, MO; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son Connie; 2 brothers, John and Marion Foulk; 4 sisters, Emma Suzetta, Violet Wilson, Vida Cullman, and Wanda Tullis; and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 26th, at the Arcadia Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Sheffield Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Girard American Legion. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel, Fort Scott. Mary McLean

Mary Lou (Gilliam) McLean, age 67, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2019, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, Missouri.

Mary was born February 6, 1952 to the late Harold Arthur and Clarissa Mary Lavina (Prieur) Schultz in Flint, Michigan. She graduated High School in Michigan, and attended college for a period of time as well.

It was on August 18, 1973 that she married David McLean in Flint, and they spent the last 46 years loving each other. He survives, of the home. The couple moved to this area in April of 2009. She worked a few odd jobs over the years, but her most important role was as a homemaker, raising their five children. She was a gifted crafter, proficient in several hand arts such as crochet, knitting, ceramics, weaving, and painting to name a few. Additionally, Mary was a Mary Kay representative and was an excellent salesperson. She and David loved to ride motorcycles as well, often with friends.








Also surviving Mary are three sons: Chris McLean of Flint, MI; Wayne (wife Nikki) of North Branch, MI; and Andre McLean of the home; two daughters: Kim Cardoza of Flint, MI; and Angela Collier of Columbus, KS; four brothers: Joe Gilliam (wife Terese) of California; Harlan Gilliam (wife Joyce) of Owosso, MI; Delmar Gilliam of Arkansas; and Wayne Schultz (wife Denise) of North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren, with "one in the basket."

E. P. Swenson

Ernest “E.P.” P. Swenson, Jr., 48, of Parsons, died at 10:18 A.M., Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at his home. His death was unexpected.

He was born November 5, 1970 at Parsons, a son of Ernest P., Sr. and Fern Janette (Kirk) Swenson. He was raised Mound Valley and Chetopa and attended school at Mound Valley and Chetopa. He was not able to work most of his life due to a disability.

He was united in marriage to Polly Ribbeck on April 12, 1994 at Miami, OK. They later separated.
He enjoyed artwork and tattoos.








Survivors include: his father and stepmother – Ernest Paul, Sr. and Virginia Swenson, Mound Valley; his sister – Lydia Kepner, Parsons; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His mother preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Richmond Cemetery at Angola.

Kathryn Queen

Kathryn Marie Queen, age 67, passed away at 6:18 pm Saturday, October 19, 2019 at her home following an illness.

Mrs Queen was born February 6, 1952 in Caldwell, Kansas. Her parents were Roylance John Frank Sr and Doris Ruth (Berge) Frank. She was a Kansas resident most of her life.

She was a homemaker, and had worked with children in daycare. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Parsons, KS. She loved going to country music concerts and casinos, spending time with her family, playing board games and taking care of her grandchildren. She enjoyed sitting down with a good book and reading poetry.
Kathryn was married to Ivan Eugene Queen Sr on February 8, 1969 in Carthage, MO He survives.








Additional survivors include three children, Ivan E Queen Jr (wife, Donna), Robert L Queen Sr (wife, Pam) and John L Queen (companion Rhonda James); one sister, Deborah Mertens; 9 brothers, Gene Engstrand, Jerry Engstrand, Rodney Engstrand, Roylance “Sonny” Frank, Edward Frank, Richard “Dick” Frank, Gary Frank, Terrance “Pete” Frank, and Jeff Frank; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roylance Frank Sr, her mother Doris Weeks, and one brother, Charles Frank.

Kathryn was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego, KS for cremation.

The family invites her friends to meet with them from 1:00 -4:00 pm, Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the Parsons Municipal Building basement to celebrate her life. Pastor Christie Walker will officiate.

Cheryl Gandy

Cheryl Lynn Gandy, 53, passed from this life on October 19, 2019 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, MO.

She was born on February 23, 1966 to Rex and Dorothy Gandy of Galena, KS. She lived in Galena all her life. Cheryl was a kind and gentle person with a huge heart. She loved spending time with her friends and family, making jokes and coming up with silly nicknames for them. She gave her brother-in-law, Greg the nickname of Dig when she was a child and it has stuck with him all his life. She was one the of the biggest animal lovers you would ever meet, never being without at least one dog of cat at all times. She loved her family passionately and will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Rex and Dorothy and one sister, Linda Chapman.








She is survived by one sister, Cindy Clevenger and husband, Greg; one brother Eric Gandy and wife, Tina; her long tome partner, Shannon Swaggart, and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements were made with Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

Graveside memorial services will be at 4:00 pm, Friday, October 25, 2019 at Gandy Cemetery, Galena, KS. Mike Huffman will officiate.

Elizabeth Haggard

Elizabeth June Haggard was born on January 15, 1936 in Bonne Terre, MO to Thomas Buchanan Reed and Aline Estelle Barbey. She went to meet her Lord on October 19, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.

She graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1954. After graduation she married the love of her life Danny Haggard. After Danny was called to the ministry, she gave her all as a partner to support him in his calling.

She worked for many years as a secretary. After Danny started his ministry, she continued as a church secretary for 4 different churches. She also was the bookkeeper at the Johnson Public Library for 14 years. She directed choir and played the piano and organ at every church they served. For 32 years she taught piano lessons in her home.








As part of her ministry in the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ denomination, she taught Sunday School for 50 years, worked as a camp counselor and youth sponsor for 30 years. Her most important and passionate ministry was her leading the Women’s Bible Study Class for over 18 years at First Christian Church, Baxter Springs, KS.

She was involved in multiple organizations. She was Past President of Chariton Women’s Club in Chariton, IA, Past Matron of Eastern Star in Scott City, KS and sang at Grand Chapter in Topeka, KS during this time, and Past President of PEO, Chapter BT in Baxter Springs, KS.

June was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Rev. Danny E. Haggard, her son Rev. David E. Haggard. Her son-in-law, Charles (Buck) Sharp. Her granddaughter, Stacey (Haggard) Brewer and her husband David Brewer.

She is survived by her sister Betty Baker of Meridian, ID. Three children Jonathon Paul Haggard and wife Tralyn of Lutsen, MN, Anne E. Sharp of Baxter Springs, KS, Kristen H Shepard and her husband Jason of Riverton, KS and daughter-in-law Cheryl Haggard of Baxter Springs, KS. Along with raising 4 children she helped raise one of her granddaughters Kara Alexander of Baxter Springs, KS. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26, at the First Christian Church in Baxter Springs. Family will receive friends Friday, October 25, from 6-7 p.m. at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to the NewCovenant Ministries, which was started by her son, David and his wife Cheryl, in Kenya to help care for widows.

Carolyn Harris

Carolyn Kay Harris, age 75 of Baxter Springs, passed away at Quaker Hill Skilled Nursing Facility at 7:15 PM on Friday, October 18, 2019.

Carolyn was born in Houston, MN on August 22, 1944 to Lauren Hargrove and Mary (Beach) Hargrove. She spent the majority of her childhood living in Minnesota, and later on the family farm in Gravette, AR, before moving to the 4-State area in 1989. 

After receiving her high school education and an Associates Degree in Business, she spent her adult life working as a truck driver, retiring in the mid-1990’s. During her free time, she enjoyed knitting and gardening. Her favorite title was “Grandma”. She was full of sass, and full of life.

Carolyn was united in marriage with Dempsey Harris on March 23, 1982 in Miami, OK. He survives.








Additional survivors include two sons, Randy Eaton of Houston, MN, and Samuel Eaton of Denver, CO; two step-children, Jeremiah Harris of Miami, OK, and Dalice Harris (husband, Charles Krueger) of Baxter Springs, KS; two brothers, Arden Hargrove (wife, Marge) of Houston, MN, and Al Hargrove of the State of Florida; one sister, Averle Hargrove-Myers of Fayetville, AR; as well as 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Douglas Eaton; a daughter, Edwina Snaza; a son, Charles Eaton; and a great-granddaughter, Kimber Tunnell.

Billie Jean Arbogast, 54, of Fort Scott, passed away Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Guest Home Estates. She was born December 24, 1964, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Forest Eugene and Iona (Crisp) Burns.

Billie is survived by her children, Brandy LeeAnn Thrasher, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Charles Eugene Arbogast of Manteca, California; two grandchildren, David Thrasher, and Colleen Thrasher; a brother, Willis Ward, and a sister, Sue Baird. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jerry L. Cox, 70, of Overland Park, KS and former resident of Pittsburg, KS died October 15, 2019 after a lengthy illness.

Jerry was born March 26, 1949 in Leota, Kansas to Ray and Hazel (Swartz) Cox.

He enjoyed volunteering at the SKIL Resource Center, playing bingo and riding his scooter all over town.

Rebecca E. Curtis, 39, of Parsons, passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, October 12, 2019 at her home.

She was born on March 13, 1980 at Parsons to Marcia Hazen and Daniel Kidd. She grew up at Parsons and attended Labette County Schools.

Rebecca worked at RP and Bordertown Convenience Store as a Clerk. She enjoyed playing with dogs, taking riding in the country, being outdoors, cosmetology, and fashion.

She and David Curtis were married on June 14, 2000 at Miami, Oklahoma. They later divorced.








She is survived by two sons, Austin Curtis and Weston Curtis of Parsons; her mother, Marcia Hazen of Parsons; her sister, Melissa McGlory of Parsons; several aunts and uncles; her niece, Star McGlory; and three nephews, Anthony Pierce, Khalil McGlory, and Clyde McGlory.
She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Kidd; her maternal grandparents and her paternal grandparents.

The family will conduct memorial services at the Springhill Cemetery at 12 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2019 with Pastor Rodney Howell officiating. Bill Schenker

Billie (Bill) Ray Schenker, 79 of Oswego, KS passed away October 15, 2019 at his home. He was born December 19, 1939 to Cecil and Katherine (Wainwright) Schenker near Papinsville, MO. He attended Zion Lutheran School in Prairie City, MO and graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1957. He married Karen Sue Farrell in 1961. She survives of the home. His sister Kay Werling also survives him.

Bill and Karen were blessed with four sons, Kevin (Cherie) of McCune, KS; Kent (Jennifer) of Oswego, KS; Kyle (Amy) of Harrisonville, MO and Kraig of El Dorado, KS. He delighted in his 16 grandchildren.

He worked as a feed salesman for numerous years before retiring in 1999. Bill loved coon hunting and was known across the country for his champion black and tans.








Bill was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oswego serving on numerous committees and as a church elder for many years. Bill loved to share the importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ with his friends and family.

His parents, a sister and two brothers preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 522 5th Street, Oswego, KS 67356.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 17, from 6:00pm – 8:00 pm; the funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 18. Both services will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oswego.

Pauline Norris

Pauline Mae Norris, age 94, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at Franklin House Assisted Living in Ft. Scott. She was born May 3, 1925, in Hepler, KS, the daughter of Charles Oscar Cowan and Grace Olive Boileau Cowan. She graduated from Blue Mound high school with the class of 1942.

Pauline married Everett Wayne “Soapy” Norris on May 19, 1946, in Mapleton, KS. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1995. When younger, she worked for Key Work Clothes as well as helping on the family dairy farm in Devon, KS. They moved to Ft. Scott in 1986. Pauline enjoyed making rag rugs. She was a member of the Devon United Methodist Church where she was very active in earlier years. She later transferred to First United Methodist in Ft. Scott.








Survivors include her son Jeff Norris and wife Vera, Ft. Scott; two sisters, Charlene Bruns, Ft. Scott, and Mary Dahmer, Nevada, MO; a brother, Bill Cowan and wife Norma, Nevada, MO; 3 grandchildren, Lindsey Norris, Ft. Scott, Sara Wells and husband Eric, Lawrence, KS, and Paul Norris and wife Cierra, Lecompton, KS; 3 great grandchildren, Sebastian, Remy and Oaklee; and many nieces and nephews. 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Norris; 4 sisters, Metta Walker and husband Mark, Irmal Smith and husband Louis, Ruth Walker and husband Jake, and Opal Brillhart and husband Ed; a brother Floyd “Buck” Cowan; brothers-in-law Glenn “Plute” Dahmer and Maurice Bruns; and her parents.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 19th, in the Mapleton Cemetery, Mapleton, KS. The family will gather at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 10:00. Linda Box

Linda R. Box, age 65, passed away on October 12, 2019 at Galena Nursing Center, Galena, Kansas, after being admitted there that evening.

Linda (Myers) Box was born October 26, 1953, the daughter of Harry and Ruth (Armstrong) Myers, who both preceded her in death. Linda had no siblings. Linda lived her entire life in Cherokee County, Kansas. She attended a one room school house (Mitchell School), where her mother taught. She graduated from Columbus Unified High School with the Class of 1971.

Linda married Roger Box; they later divorced. 








She is survived by one son: RB Box (wife Christy); grandchildren: Tyler J. Box, Matthew J. Box, Addison R. Box, and Ethan J. Box, all from Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also survived by her life partner Rick J, Moore of the home, and long term friend Teresa Amos. She loved her four legged fur babies like no other. Linda battled cancer starting in 2000, and fought it again starting in 2012. Linda was a very special soul and touched many people throughout her care at Mercy Cancer Center, for most of 20 years.

The family will host a Celebration of Life service at Park Cemetery, Thursday, October 17, 2019, at 2:00 PM.

Darrell Neal

Darrell D Neal, age 69, passed away at 3:31 am, Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Medicalodge in Neosho MO following an illness.

Darrell was born December 11, 1949 in Baxter Springs, KS. His parents were William Ray and Marguerite Irene (O’Dell) Neal. He was a lifetime resident of Cherokee County KS. He was also a man of faith and enjoyed worshiping at Crossroads Christian Church, Baxter Springs, KS.

He was a self-employed farmer and truck driver. He loved working on the farm especially during hay season. He was a horseman and enjoyed riding on the horse drawn carriage pulled by his faithful horse, Pretty Girl. Pretty Girl preceded him in death. He was known for telling tall tales.








He was a U S Army veteran of the Vietnam war, receiving the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze star; Sharp Shooter Badge; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Hobert Neal, Ferrell Neal, and Larandal Neal, and one sister, Yvette Shira.

Darrell was married to Jean Marie Schoelzel on May 27, 2007 in Monett, MO. She survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Brandon Geer (wife, Beth) and Grant Geer, both of Galena, KS.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs, KS. Jake Stivers will officiate. Burial will be in Pence Cemetery, Baxter Springs, KS.

Lisa Margarett Smith, 54, of Opolis, KS, passed away at 2:05 p.m., Monday, October 14, 2019, at her home.

She was born June 15, 1965, at Pittsburg, KS, the daughter of Bobby Joe and Nancy (Stumfoll) Short.

On January 15, 1999, she was united in marriage to Dale L. Smith at Miami, OK. He survives of the home.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Brenton Andrew Short of Winfield, KS, and Ian Joseph Short of the home, two sisters, Natalie Nadine Short of Pittsburg and Terri Short of Pittsburg, and three grandchildren.








She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Carl Leroy Short and one sister, Toni Diane Lovell.

Pansy Viola “Diana” Tucker, age 82, resident of Shreveport, LA, died early Monday, October 14, 2019, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. 

She was born September 10, 1937 in Ontario, OH. The daughter of Harry Albert Danals and Pansy Viola Rutter. 

She married Carl Dean “Tink” Tucker, on February 6, 1953 in Largo, FL, he preceded her in death. Pansy worked for Peerless products for several years, but most of her career was spent as an over the road truck driver. Her favorite seasons were fall and the Christmas season. She enjoyed traveling, casinos, fishing, and going country cruising. Pansy’s enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Brenda Prudhomme, and husband Budd, Shreveport, LA., Rick Tucker, and wife Tedena, Fort Scott, Teresa Giddens, and husband Randy, of Fort Scott, and, Doug Tucker, Branson, Mo.; thirteen grandchildren, Melissa “Missy” Mendenhall, David Bruce Prudhome, Stephanie Anthony, Heather Engstrom, Michelle Call, Mandy Giddens, Laramie Giddens, Mariah Tucker, Emily Tucker, Phoenix Tucker, Danny Tucker, Russell Shadden, and John Shadden; fourteen great-grandchildren; two sister, Zelda Thomas, Largo, FL., and Linda Clark, Pinellas Park, FL.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by ,her husband “Tink”; a daughter, Tammy Louise Tucker; her parents; five brothers, Wilber, Dick, Albert, Wayne, and Everett Danals, four sisters, Orthella Danals, Jacqueline Wilson, Betty Briner, and Mary Ellen Patton.

Gloria Oertle

Gloria Geraldine Oertle, 92, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2019, at her residence.

She was born December 17, 1926, in Cherryvale, KS, to Preston and Opal (Crippen) Gurss.

On March 3, 1946, she was united in marriage to Charles E. Oertle Jr.

Gloria worked in Washington D.C. during WWII and retired from the Census Bureau in Pittsburg, KS. She and her husband owned the Pla-Mor Smoke House.

She was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed reading and gardening.








She is survived by three daughters, Pamela Casey of Murphy, NC, Debbie Bittner of Saint Petersburg, FL, Reenee Cochran of Bel Air, MD, and a son, Brent Oertle of Pittsburg, KS; two sisters, Joyce Cottrel of Tulsa, OK, and Sharon Young of Topeka, KS; four grandchildren, Lindsi Perez, Tyler Bittner, Kelsey Cochran, and Kaden Cochran; and two great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and a grandson, Zachary Casey.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 PM, Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Lamplighter Inn. The family suggests memorials be given to Angels Among Us. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary.

Donald Rapp

Donald Lynn Rapp, 63, of Scammon, Kansas, passed away at 8:53 a.m. Sunday, October 13, 2019 at his home.

He was born August 16, 1956 at Columbus, Kansas, the son of Donald Alfred and Bertha Darlene (Thomas) Rapp. He graduated from Columbus Unified High School and was a lifetime area resident.

Mr. Rapp worked as a welder for McCabe Industrial Minerals.








Donald is survived by a daughter, Rebeka Amerson of Pittsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donald Rauch

Donald L Rauch, age 91, passed away at 8:01 am, Friday, October 11, 2019 at his home after a sudden illness.

Donald was born December 12, 1927 in Labette County, KS. His parents were Clarence J and Mary (Strickland) Rauch. He was a lifetime resident of Oswego.

He was a farmer. He worked at the Oswego COOP for 20 years while he also farmed in Labette and Cherokee Counties. He last worked with Albert Strickland until his retirement in 2015.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oswego, KS. Donald used to play guitar in a band with Carl Carton. He enjoyed bowling and hunting with his brother.

Donald was married to Zelma Mae Houston on July 10, 1987 in Oswego. She survives.








Additional survivors include one step-son, Bill Snyder (wife, Rena) Chanute, KS; two step-daughters, Judy Nading, Frontenac, KS and Joann Smith (husband Jory) Jackson, MO; 4 step-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Teri Lacher

Terrance Jerome (Teri) Lacher, 61, of Girard, Kansas lost his battle with brain cancer after over a year of battling on September 30th, 2019 at University of Kansas Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born on March 15th, 1958 in Bismarck, North Dakota, the son of Ed and Donna (Naumann) Lacher. He was united in marriage to Colleen Silva and she survives of the home.

Teri worked as a mason/bricklayer his entire career. He was the masonry foreman for several area projects including the skybox seating at Pitt State’s Carnie Smith Stadium, R.V. Haderlein Elementary School addition, the Ronald McDonald House and the YMCA, both of Joplin, Community National Bank in Frontenac, and several others. He also restored the state capitol steps in Bismarck a few years ago.

Teri loved coaching for several sports teams that his children participated on when they were younger. He enjoyed golfing, spectator sports, and auctions. Teri also had a passion for cooking, especially old German recipes.








Additional survivors include his mother, Donna Lacher, of Bismarck N.D.; his daughter, Jessi Lacher; his son, T.J. Lacher; his granddaughter, Taylor Lacher, and one stepson, Matthew Mabin (previous marriage); his brothers, Jeff Lacher (Linda) of Denver, Colorado , Tom Lacher and Gordie Lacher, both of Bismarck; his sisters, Mary Knudson (Bill) of Bismarck and Valerie Richards (Gary) of Minot, North Dakota; numerous nieces and nephews.

Teri was preceded in death by his father, Ed Lacher.

We will celebrate Teri’s life on Saturday, October 19th, 2019 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., at the La Quinta Inn and Suites, 2410 S Broadway St., Pittsburg, Kansas.

Jim Miller

James “Jim” Walter Miller, 85, of Parsons, died at 10:49 A.M., Thursday, October 10, 2019 at the Presbyterian Manor.

He was born December 24, 1933 in Chamois, MO, a son of Jesse James “Buck” LaFavor and Minnie Amos. His father died before he was born and he was raised by his mother and in later years by his step-father, Ralph A. Miller. Growing up, his family lived in Cheyenne, WY, Kansas City, MO, St. Louis, MO and later moved to Parsons, where he graduated high school. Following high school Jim attended Wichita State University, receiving his construction engineering certificate.

Continuing residence in Parsons, he worked as a Union Card Holder, Journeyman Contractor for LaForge and Budd Construction, and later Art Hill Sr. Other career highlights included helping to build the Parsonian Hotel and the KG&E Power Plant. He then operated Jim Miller Construction for over forty years, building and remodeling homes and commercial buildings. Jim was a masterful finish carpenter, specializing in custom cabinets. He was President of the MKT Rod and Gun Club in Moran for several years, where he and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed spending time at their cabin. An avid fisherman, he acquired many awards and recognitions.








On October 24, 1954 he was united in marriage to Nancy Lee Norton at the First Baptist Church in Parsons. She preceded him in death on September 24, 2018. Jim was a member of the First Christian Church in Parsons. In early years, he was a member of the Jaycees and had been a troop leader with the Boy Scouts where he assisted many young men in earning their Eagle Scout Awards. He had also been a member of the Young Democrats with aspiring efforts in politics. His greatest joys were spending time talking with family, friends and his beloved wife, Nancy. His grandchildren knew him as “One Crazy Grandpa” as he brought so many smiles as he shared his lessons of life with them that they’ll treasure forever.

Survivors include: one son and daughter in-law - Gary Lee and Jodie Miller, Ozark, MO; two daughters and sons in-law – Pamela Ann and Trent L. Alexander, Ft. Worth, TX, Jeanette and Vince Horton, Parsons, KS; eight grandchildren – Adie Williams, Springfield, MO, Jimmy Miller and his wife, Julie, West Plains, MO, Sam Miller, and his wife, Kayla West Plains, MO, Sydney Miller, St. Louis, MO, Drew L. Alexander, Amarillo, TX, Vanessa S. Stanfield, and her husband, Devin, London, England, Allison Garcia, and her husband, Rich, Weston, FL, Scott Horton, Dallas, TX; ten great-grandchildren; one brother and sister in-law – Dwayne and Clara Miller, Huntsville, AL; one sister in-law – Pat Norton, Torrance, CA; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister – Elaine Hempen and one brother in-law – Don Norton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at the First Christian Church with Rev. Laurie Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening at the CARSON-WALL FUNERAL HOME. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church. Gail Wade

Gail Ann Wade, age 65, passed away at 11:03 am Thursday, October 10, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital, Springfield MO following an illness.

Gail was born June 10, 1954 in Hayward, CA. Her parents were Alwin and Loyce (Lyerla) Freudendahl. She had lived in Galena since 1969, moving from Hayward, CA.

She graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1972. She worked a few years as the office manager for Mediacom in Galena. She last worked as a police dispatcher for the City of Galena, a position she held for 20 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena, KS. Her greatest joy was her granddaughters.








Surviving is her husband of 50 years, Alvin Wade, Galena; one daughter, Blair Reed, Galena; three grandchildren, Hunter Reed (wife, Sierra) Valley Center, CA, Maycee Reed, and Keeley Reed, both of Galena; one half brother, Gary Freuendahl, San Berdino, CA and one niece, Tracy Freudendahl , San Berdino, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one daughter, Brooke Wade Murray.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 -5:00 pm, Monday, October 14, 2019 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

A Memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm, Monday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Mike Huffman will officiate.

Dale Roberts

Kenneth Dale Roberts, age 63, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at his home. He was born May 8, 1956, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the son of Kenneth Ray Roberts and Joanne Lloyd Roberts.

Dale attended school in both Fort Scott and Pittsburg and graduated from the Pleasanton High School. 

He married Cynthia Ann Hickman on April 8, 1983, at Miami, Oklahoma. Dale worked for Ward-Kraft in Ft. Scott for fifteen years. He later served as Vice-President of Ross Martin and Corporate Express a printing company based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dale and his wife later owned and operated Comfort Keepers, an in-home care service in Owasso, Oklahoma. 










Following retirement, Dale and his family returned to Ft. Scott. He enjoyed woodworking as well as hunting, fishing and traveling. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include his two children, Brett Roberts and Danielle Roberts, both of Ft. Scott; his mother and stepfather, Joanne and Ralph Bradley, of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; two brothers, Kevin Roberts, of Pleasanton, Kansas and Kurt Roberts, of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; and a sister, Penny Talmage, of Ottawa, Kansas. Also surviving is his father-in-law, Herb Hickman, of Pittsburg and a close family friend, Matt Nelson, of Owasso, Oklahoma.

His wife, Cynthia, preceded him in death on June 17, 2015. He was also preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Ray Roberts and an infant brother, Scott Roberts and his mother-in-law, Shirley Hickman.

Following cremation, Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct a memorial service at 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 21st at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 21st at the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the Grace Baptist Tabernacle and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Mary Hall

Mary Elizabeth Hall, age 84, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, October 10, 2019, at her home. She was born February 27, 1935, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Tom Lee Bolan and Alean Benskin Bolan.

She married Edward LeRoy Hall on May 1, 1951, in Ft. Scott. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1995. Mary enjoyed crafts, crocheting, sewing and making blankets and clothing. She was always there for her family no matter the need. She also had a big heart for animals.








Survivors include 3 sons, Eddie Hall, Jr. and wife Kathy, Tom Hall, and Fred Hall and wife Cindy, all of Ft. Scott; 3 daughters, Carol Edwards and husband Archie, Ft. Scott, Karen Hall, Ft. Scott, and Sharla Hall, Nevada, MO; a brother, Tom Lee Bolan Pittsburg, KS; 2 sisters, Ella May Saker, Ft. Scott, and Wanda Whiteaker, Pittsburg, KS; ex-daughter in law Liz Hall, Ft. Scott; 14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Charlie Hall; a half-brother, George Omar Redfern; and her parents.

Rev. Rod Hillhouse will conduct funeral services at 10:00 Friday, October 18th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Ft. Scott. Joseph Natalini

Joseph Louis Natalini, Jr. 57 of Pittsburg, KS died October 9, 2019 after a lengthy illness.

Joseph was born May 15, 1962 in Pittsburg to Joseph and Judith (Stumfoll) Natalini.

He attended area schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School with the class of 1980. He was employed at Consumers until its closing and then Hix Corporation for 26 years.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Pittsburg.









Joseph was preceded in death by his father on April 12, 2014. 

He is survived by his mother, Judith of Pittsburg KS, brothers, Brian (Susie) Natalini, Columbus, KS, Stephen (Leta) Natalini, Scammon, KS, Mark (Shanna) Natalini, Pittsburg, KS, sister Dr. Brenda (Randy) Robinson, Pittsburg, KS, girlfriend Lorre Beasley and nieces and nephews.
