Keith Cruse

Keith Gerald Cruse, age 63, passed away at 9:09 am, Friday, February 28, 2020 at his home following an illness.

Mr Cruse was born October 22, 1956 in Northridge, CA. He was one of 9 children born to Kenneth and Betty (Peterson) Cruse.

He served in the U S Marines during the Vietnam War. He last worked as a truck driver.

Keith was married to Karen Myers on May 18, 1974 in Parsons, KS she survives.










Additional survivors include one son, Klinton Cruse, Parsons; one daughter, Krystal Cruse, Parsons; 6 brothers, his twin, Kevin Cruse, Parsons, Mike Cruse, Gardner, KS, Braden Cruse, Gastonia, NC, Brian Cruse, Lawrence, KS, William Cruse, Parsons, and Brent Cruse, Parsons; 2 grandchildren, Siamone Bentley, Topeka, KS and Isaiah Bittle, Parsons, and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents one brother, Kenny Ray Cruse and one sister, Lisa Fuller.

Keith was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego, KS for cremation. No services are planned.

Junior Norris

Junior Ray Norris, age 67, passed away Thursday evening February 27, 2020 at his home.

Junior was born January 1, 1953 in Rogers, Arkansas. His parents were Henry and Lena Mae (Castor) Norris. He last lived in Columbus the past 5 years moving from Weir, Kansas.

He attended Faith Tabernacle in Weir. He enjoyed riding his bicycle around the area searching for and collecting aluminum cans. He enjoyed spending time on his computer.








Junior is survived by two brothers, Arnold Norris, Baxter Springs, KS and Roger Norris, Pittsburg, KS. And several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Glen Allen Norris.

Keith was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS for cremation. The family will be holding a memorial service at a later date.

Jennie Fontaine

Jennie (Lipasek) Fontaine, 99 of Harrisonville, MO died Wednesday February 26, 2020 at the Crown Care Center in Harrisonville.

She was born June 30 1920 in Franklin, KS the daughter of Frank and Mary (Cukiati) Lipasek.

On February 26, 1941 she was united in marriage to Frank Fontaine, Jr.; he preceded her in death April 7, 1985.

Jennie was a homemaker and an avid gardener.








Survivors include a son-in-law Michael Gerant, Sr. of Peculiar, MO two granddaughters: Jennie (Alfredo) Gonzalez of Raymore, MO and Christa (Shawn) Cunningham of Pittsburg, KS; two grandsons: Mike (Sheila) Gerant, Jr. of Peculiar and Frankie (Andi) Fontaine of Pittsburg along with 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son George Fontaine, a daughter JoAnn Gerant, 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

Funeral services will be 11am Monday, March 2, 2020 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 am until service time.

Kevin Harvey

Kevin Wayne Harvey Sr. 48, of Pittsburg, KS died 8:00am Monday February 24, 2020 at his home following an illness.

Kevin was born August 10, 1971 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Eddie Wayne and Betty (Ratliff) Harvey. He was a lifelong resident of Pittsburg and attended area schools.

Kevin married Lisa Marie Bunney on February 14, 1992; she preceded him in death on December 24, 2010. Kevin worked for Jake’s Fireworks for 10 years.

Kevin will be most remembered for his love of fishing, hunting, long walks, the Kansas City Chiefs and most of all his love of his grandchildren.








Survivors include his mother; children Kevin Wayne Harvey of Pittsburg, KS and Sabrina Nichole Harvey and fiancée Ron Garcia of Pittsburg, KS; brother Charles Harvey of Pittsburg, KS; sisters Connie Shead of Pittsburg, KS and Tammy Harvey of Pittsburg, KS and grandchildren Bentley, Bryson and Hayden Harrison.

Kevin was preceded in death by his dad, wife and paternal grandmother.

Sarina Wilson

Sarina LaVonne Wilson 44, of Pittsburg, KS died 6:25 a.m. Sunday February 23, 2020 at her home following an illness.

Sarina was born July 17, 1975 in Ft. Scott, KS the daughter of Michael Ray Coulter and Tami (Alvarado) Lynch. Sarina was raised most of her life in California but has been a resident of Pittsburg for the last 20 years.

On May 19, 2018 Sarina married Jimmy D. Wilson in Mulberry, KS; he survives at the home.
Sarina was member of the Countryside Christian Church in Pittsburg, KS where she was baptized on November 10, 2013. Sarina loved to watch Wheel of Fortune and she will be most remembered by her love of friends, family and most of all her grandchildren.








Survivors include her husband; mother; children Shauntell Caesar and husband Michael Chapman of Pittsburg, KS, Sean Caesar of Pittsburg, KS, Sierra Caesar and husband Crashawn Allen of Pittsburg, KS, Xavier Caesar and Asia Davis of Pittsburg, KS and Ashley Wilson of Oklahoma City, OK, Chantay R. Judy Crocker

Judith Ann Crocker was born on July 1, 1946 in Columbus, Kansas to Charles Jackson and Betty (Cool) Crocker. She grew up on the family farm in rural Cherokee County and was a graduate of Columbus Unified High School.

On September 18, 1965, she was united in marriage to Merlin Gene Rosenstiel. They had two children together.

She enjoyed writing, drawing and spending time with her dogs whom she loved very much. She was in the process of writing a children’s book at the time of her death.

From an early age, Judy had a genuine love for God’s word and his creations. Throughout her life, she felt a genuine need to share what she was learning with others. In recent times, she was reconnecting with those who also shared this same joy. She found that this is what she truly needed in her life. Judy was looking forward to the future promises of a paradise earth under the Kingdom rule of Christ Jesus.








Judy leaves behind a son, Troy Rosenstiel, of Pittsburg, Kansas and daughter Gina Erwin of Butler, Missouri, and four grandchildren: Ethan, Sydney, Jorja and Marshall Rosenstiel.

Memorial Service will be held on March 7, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Chanute Kansas located at 4040 S Johnson Road, Chanute, KS. A private Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus, KS.

Martha Dobkins

Martha Elizabeth McCormick Dobkins, 99, of Columbus, died at Medicalodge in Columbus, Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2020.

Martha was born July 5, 1920 in Corona, KS. She was the daughter of George Armstead and Lula (Spencer) McCormick.

Martha was united in marriage to Homer Martin Dobkins on December 12, 1938 in Fredonia, KS. This marriage was celebrated for 69 years. Homer preceded Martha in death, December 28, 2007.
Martha started her schooling at the old one room Millersburg School. Later she attended Stepville School. Then her schooling continued at Central School in Columbus, and then Columbus High School. She was not able to finish High school. But later in 1986, along with her older sister Anna M. Buergin, they completed their GEDs with honors.

Martha worked for Maude Norton Hospital in the 1950’s for five years before moving to Fort Collins, Colorado in November of 1957. Upon arriving in Colorado, she worked for Eventide Nursing Home for three years. After leaving the employment of Eventide Nursing Home, Martha began her career working for Woodward Governer for 23 years, retiring in 1982.

After Martha retired the decision was made to return to Columbus. Homer and Martha spent a lot of time with their siblings and their families. Also enjoying time with children and grandchildren.
Martha was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crestline, KS and attended regularly as long as she was able. She served as a clerk for many years. She loved cooking for the many family gatherings and for the church dinners they had.








In August of 1998 Homer and Martha celebrated their upcoming 60th Wedding Anniversary early so that all of their children and grandchildren could attend. This was a two day and two night retreat at the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado. This retreat was successful due to Martha’s good planning and persistence. Martha loved caring for her plants. She was very good. Her favorite were the African Violets.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Frank, Theodore (Dugan), and George W. McCormick; and three sisters, Anna M. Buergin, Agnes Naomi Barrett, and Susie Ruth Baird. Also preceding Martha in death was a grandson Travis Brauch.

Survivors include two sons, H. Wayne Dobkins of Columbus, and David Lee Dobkins of Cortez, Colorado, three daughters, Betty Jane Burr of Ft Collins, Colorado, Mary Lou Brauch of Cedaredge, Colorado, and Margaret Dobkins of Loveland, Colorado. Also, Martha has a number of nieces and nephews living in the Columbus area, and across the country; and one sister-in-law Mildred Lerner of Sun City, California.

Also surviving Martha are 11 grandchildren, Noble Dobkins (Sara) of Columbus, KS, Angel Ashby (Chris) of Las Vegas, NV, Dolly Stoddart (Jared), and Mary Jane Johnston (Ryan) from North Las Vegas, NV, Danny Burr (Sue) of Golden Valley, Arizona, Ken Burr (Cristie) of San Jose, California, Barb Huff (Dana) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Tom Brauch (Suzett) Castle Rock, Colorado, Lance Brauch of Penrose, Colorado, Jim Lemer (Kelly) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Matt Lemer of Loveland, Colorado.

Great grandchildren include Archer, Chesney, Kemper, Blaze, Justus, Aspen, Stephen, Alex, Christina, Jordan, Maddox, Abigail, Hope, Katie, Trinten, Kody, Blake, Danielle, Emily, Camille, Hayden, and Liesl.

The family will receive friends from 9 AM-10AM Saturday, March 7th at Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus.

Funeral Services will follow at 10:00 AM at Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus. Pastor Paul Duncan will officiate. Burial will be in Edgmand Cemetery in rural Columbus.

In charge of the music will be Dan Duncan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Crestline.

Kitten Wilson

Winona E. “Kitten” Wilson, 72, of Frontenac, died at 12:50 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2020 in the Medicalodge in Frontenac.

Kitten was born February 19, 1948 in Parsons, a daughter of James R. January, Jr. and Donna E. Fugate. She grew up in Parsons and graduated from Parsons High School. She graduated from construction school in Kansas City and worked for the Beachner Bridge Construction Company in St. Paul.

Kitten married Ken Wilson on August 12, 1966 in Parsons. They divorced. She worked as a manager for a telemarketing company before moving to Kansas City to work at Sprint. Kitten returned to Parsons in 1985 and moved to Arma in 1990 where she worked at SECAP before retiring in 1995.

In 2003, she moved to Frontenac to be near her daughter and granddaughters.

Kitten was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Parsons and she was formerly an assistant volunteer fire chief in Weir. Kitten also volunteered during her granddaughter’s elementary years at Frank Layden Elementary School in Frontenac from 2004 until 2010.








Survivors include her daughter, Monica Wilson, of Frontenac; her son, Monti Wilson, and his wife, Tena, of Idaho; her grandchildren, twins Bralyn and Kieran Wilson; her brothers, James R. “Rick” January, and his wife, Stella, of Buford, Georgia, Gerald “Skip” January, and his wife, Louise, of Smithville, Missouri; her sister, Carolyn Schroeder of Arma; numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Kitten was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gwain “Monk” January, on June 8, 2016.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Jan Yoger Veatch officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 3:00 p.m., Thursday.

The family will gather at the Homer Cole Center, 3003 N Joplin Street in Pittsburg following the committal service, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m.

Martha Clark

Martha Ann Clark, 86, of Fort Scott, passed away, Sunday, February 23, 2020, at the Medicalodge of Fort Scott. She was born May 11, 1933, in Springfield, Missouri the daughter of John Paul and Cora (Shaup) Jones.

She married Kenneth E. Clark on October 3, 1954, in Stark, Kansas, he preceded her in death, March 9, 1999. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Scott.








She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Clark, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Garland, Kansas and Kevin Clark of Chanute, Kansas, three grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Kenneth, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Keith Clark, two brothers, and four sisters.

Pastor James Collins will officiate graveside services for Martha at 12:30 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2020, at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. June Rust

June Rust, 93, a longtime rural Parsons resident, died Monday, February 24, 2020, at the Wellsprings Care Home where she had lived the past year.

She was born in 1926 to Floyd and Magdalene (Murray) Bryant of Parsons. She grew up in Parsons and graduated from Parsons High School in 1944.

After graduation, she worked at United Iron Works in Pittsburg as a draftsman, compiling costs and preparing bids. After WW II ended, she returned to Parsons. On September 1, 1946 she and Paul L. Rust were married in Parsons.

June was a homemaker as the family moved in 1951 to St. Joseph, Missouri, and then to rural Parsons in 1954.

In 1980, with the children out of the home, June returned to work at Labette County Hospital as a dietician, and later, cafeteria supervisor.

June participated at Center Bethel Church for many years.










Her husband, Paul, preceded her in death in December 2001. She is survived by her two children, Sharon Rust-Ryburn (Richard) of Norfolk, Virginia, and Timothy (Jill) of Wichita, Kansas, and her sister Betty Simmons of Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Monday, March 1, 2020 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Carson-Wall from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. Vic Malson

Victor F. “Vic” Malson, 78, of Parsons, passed away at 5:23 p.m., Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Labette Health in Parsons. He was born on August 21, 1941 in Ft. Scott to Charley and Lucile (George) Malson. Vic Graduated from Great Bend High School in 1959.

He served in the United States Navy from 1962 until retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1982. He later worked at Labette Community College as Director of Facilities and Maintenance and most recently as the manager of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 704.

Vic was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 704 and had served as a local and district commander. He also had been active in the honor guard and participated in many of the ceremonies.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, watching his grandson, Jaden’s wrestling matches, fishing with his daughter and grandchildren, watching rodeos, woodworking, and pheasant and duck hunting.







Survivors include his daughter, Ann Malson-Heady, and her husband, Clete of Parsons; two grandsons, Jaden Malson and Hunter Heady; three daughters, Terri Jean, Kelli Lynn and Kimberly Francis; many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hollis Norman Maslon, Charles George Malson and Vincent Edward Malson (Vic’s Twin); two sisters, Norma Lee Spear and Virginia Lucile Schnichels.

Donald Ralph

Donald L. Ralph, 85, of rural Farlington, died at 9:15 a.m., Monday, February 24, 2020.

Donald was born June 23, 1934 in Beulah, a son of Melvin J. and Mildred (Holley) Ralph. He moved with his family to rural Farlington in 1944 and later graduated from Girard High School in 1952.

Donald served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1956 until 1958.

He married Marge R. O’Brien on October 3, 1959 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut. She survives of the home.

Donald worked as a farmer and rancher for all his adult life. He also worked for the Soil Conservation office where he designed terraces and waterways, and at the Producers Coop in Girard where he made bean meal and drove the propane truck.

Donald was a Christian and he enjoyed farming and raising cattle and horses.

He served on the Board of Directors for Hospital District No. 1 and the Producers Coop, both of Girard. He was a charter member and past fire chief of Sherman Township Fire Department and a charter member of the Farlington Best Yet 4H Club.








Survivors, in addition to his wife, Marge, of the home, are a daughter, Rebecca Willard, and her husband, Neil, of Girard; his sons, Kenny Ralph, and his wife, Lisa, of Wann, Oklahoma and Richard Ralph of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; his grandchildren Dusty Willard, and his wife, Beth, Cashion Willard, Kaleb Ralph, Bradley Ralph, Samantha Kidd, and her husband, Connor, and Lauren Ralph; one great-grandson, Finn Daniel Willard.

Donald was preceded in death by a son, Karl Ralph, in 1967; a grandson, Daxton Willard, in 2016; a brother, Merlin Ralph, in 1973.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with military honors given by the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 p.m., until service time.

Marilyn Bruner

Marilyn Louise Bruner, age 76, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Monday, February 24, 2020, at her home. She was born November 5, 1943, in Mapleton, KS, the daughter of Walter Eberly and Agnes Mackie Bruner.

Marilyn loved spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She and her brother Joe always planted a large garden. She enjoyed baking, cooking, dancing, gardening, playing cards and board games. She also enjoyed attending church and dining out with friends. Her CB handle was “Dancing Queen."








Survivors include a sister, Venita Miller, Kincaid, KS; two sisters in law, Darla Bruner, Ft. Scott, KS, and Freda Bruner, Mound City, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 5 sisters, Pauline Seitz, Lorraine Wilcox, Leora Ross, Shirley Ball, and an infant sister; 3 brothers, Virgil, Joseph, and Willard Bruner; and her parents.

Paul Allen

Paul Lavern Allen passed away at Galena Manor in Galena, Kansas on Friday, February 21, 2020.

Paul was born to Elvon and Carrie (Crain) Allen in Sheridan Township, Cherokee County, Kansas on October 25, 1931. He was the youngest of five children. Paul grew up on a small farm and attended school in West Mineral. He loved all sports, and in high school played football, basketball and track. His favorite sport was baseball. He loved the game and was a talented catcher. 

Upon graduation from Mineral High School in 1949, Paul played ball in a town league for P&M Coal Company. Shortly after, he married and moved to Kansas City, MO, where he worked for Southern Lumber in their train yard.

In 1952, a job opportunity at Spencer Chemical brought him and his family back to Columbus, Kansas. Paul raised four kids and was involved in the community. He served as a councilman for the city of Columbus, coached little league baseball and was a SE Kansas high school football and basketball referee for many years. His kids participated in 4-H, and he was an active 4-H leader for the Lone Elm Beaver 4-H club.

In 1980, Paul married Dorothy (Byrd) Allen and they have resided in Galena, Kansas for the past 35 years. Paul had several careers in life: he was a Farm Bureau Insurance agent, traffic controller for FAG Bearing in Joplin, Allis Chalmers Tractor Implement Salesman, and motel manager for Motel 6 in Austin, Texas. Paul was a master craftsman and throughout his life he worked as a carpenter. He practiced this trade until the age of 82, when his health no longer allowed him to do so.








For the past 13 years, Paul was elected to serve on the Galena City Council as a Councilman. This last December finished up his final term. A footbridge at the Galena City Park will soon be named in his honor. Paul was a published poet, having been printed in five different poetry books. He loved to write beautiful, funny, and sad poems. In 1998, he was recognized by the National Library of Poetry, when two of his poems were picked as Editor’s Choice.

Paul is preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers, two sisters, his son Mike Allen, and daughter-in law Sally Allen.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy of Galena, and her two children Dena (Hubbard) Hill and husband Ronnie of Galena, Kansas and son Ray Hubbard of Galena, Kansas. Paul’s three children: son Steve Allen of Springfield, Missouri, daughter Patty Sutton and husband Mark of Wagoner, Oklahoma, and daughter Kathy Denny and husband Don of Columbus, Kansas. Paul was blessed with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joan M. Humble, 92, of rural Girard, died at 3:37 p.m., Saturday, February 22, 2020 at her residence.

Joan was born May 21, 1927 in Winchester, Indiana, the daughter of Harry and Mary (Locke) Johnston.

Joan grew up and attended schools in Indiana.

She married James E. Humble on February 4, 1947 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. James preceded her in death on June 23, 1998.

She and James lived in Tulsa for 37 years where James worked for Armco Steel.

Joan was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Girard, the Girard Garden Club, the Wagon Wheel Square Dance Club and the Red Hat Society, both of Girard.

She enjoyed card making, cooking, and crafting.








Survivors are her daughters, Sharon Staton, and her husband, Jon, of Tulsa, and Jamie Ziegler, and her husband, Kurt, of Girard; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Nancy Boman, in 2006.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday at the Girard Cemetery with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 4:00 p.m., Monday.

Shirley Scheer

Shirley Ann Scheer, 81 of Baxter Springs, KS passed from this life on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, MO.

Shirley was born July 5, 1938 in Washington D.C. to the union of Stuart and Laura Marie (Shaw) Hollar.

She was united in marriage to Robert Scheer on April 13, 1967 in Chesterfield, MI, where they lived for 40 years. Shirley worked for the warranty administration for Ford Motor Co. Shirley enjoyed playing horse shoes and bowling with Bob. She liked taking trips to Las Vegas and cheering on her favorite Washington Redskins.








Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Ricky Drawbaugh; sister, Audrey Casear and husband Charles; brothers-in-law, Michael Devers and James Scheer.

Shirley is survived by son, Michael Drawbaugh of Florida;daughter, Lisa Marie Mercer and husband Ray of Baxter Springs;brother, Robert Hollar and wife Sharon of the Carolina’s; sister, Beverly Devers of Virginia; two grandchildren, Justin Slavens of the home, and Lilli Slavens of Baxter Springs, KS; Children’s father, Mike Slavens and wife Tracy; two step-grandchildren, Brelee Mercer, and Brittany Mercer and her son, Hunter; two great grandchildren, Gabbi and Crimson; sisters-in-law, Neva Scheer and Carrol Kraft; brother-in-law, Bill Scheer.

Jesse Whited

Jesse J. Whited age age 86 of Baxter Springs ,Kansas passed away Friday, February 21, 2020 at Eastwood Manor in Commerce, Oklahoma. He was born on November 6, 1933 in Picher, Oklahoma the son of Frank J. & Ora Bell Thomas Whited.

He attended school in Hockerville and Quapaw, Oklahoma. He entered the United States Air Force in 1953 serving overseas in Germany.

After serving for his country he began working for the United State Postal Service in 1961 retiring in 1988. After retirement he then made his home in Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1989.








He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonnie, a daughter, Alta Jean Webber, two brothers, Glen Dale Whited and Harold Dean Whited and one sister, Frankie Ventura.

He is survived by his brother, Larry Whited, two sisters, Carolyn Clogston and Johnita Johnson. Also surviving are three grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services for Jesse J. Whited will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Baxter Springs Cemetery, Baxter Springs, Kansas with Rev. Ray Clonts, officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Commerce, Oklahoma.

Pamela Elliott

Pamela Sue Elliott, 68 of Pittsburg, Kansas passed from this life on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Pittsburg Health and Rehabilitation, Pittsburg, KS.

Pamela was born June 17, 1951 in Kansas City, MO to the union of William Frank and Peggy Sue (Byrd) Miles. Pamela worked for Emerson Electric, where she tested motors. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Pittsburg, KS. Pamela earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Pittsburg State University. Pamela received many awards and even had some of her work published for poetry. She enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with her family.








Pamela is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by two sons, Randy Kraft and wife Amy of Pittsburg, KS, Curtis Kraft of Wichita, KS; daughter, Kelly Dollison and husband Danny of Arma, KS; brother, Gary Miles of Independence, MO; sister, Sheila Gardner of Independence, MO; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Darwin Potter

Darwin Lee Potter, age 84 of Galena, passed away at his home at 5:00 AM on Thursday, February 20, 2020 following an illness.

Darwin was born in Battle Creek, MI on April 21, 1935 to his mother and father, Robert G. Potter and Helen (Resnick) Potter. He served our country in the Army National Guard, and was also enlisted in the US Army during the 1960’s. He began working at A&P Grocery Store as a bag boy and, through a series of promotions, became a store manager. Most recently, he had worked in maintenance at St. John’s Hospital, retiring in the mid 2000’s. He was a member of Riverton House of Prayer in Riverton, KS, and was also a member of the Lion’s Club. He enjoyed metal detecting, treasure hunting, bowling, and collecting die cast cars and baseball cards.

He was united in marriage with Esther Sue McMullen on August 27, 1961 in St. Petersburg, FL. They had lived in Seminole, FL, and moved to Southeast Kansas in 1983. She survives of the home.








Additional survivors include two sons, Adam Dale Potter (wife, Shonda) of Baxter Springs, and Steven Daniel Potter (wife, Tracey) of Hernando, FL; one daughter, Laura Lee Wilson (husband, Don) of Spring Hill, Fl; two brothers, Robert G. Potter (wife, Jackie) of Morriston, FL, and Alan L. Potter of St. Petersburg, FL; one sister, Janet Ruckdeschel of St. Petersburg, FL; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helen Potter; and one sister, Ann Hadley.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 24, 2020 at Riverton House of Prayer. Pastor Audie Tash will officiate. Burial will follow at Quaker Valley Cemetery in Riverton.

Visitation will take place at the church on the same day of the service, beginning at 10:00 AM.

Harley Wettstein

Harold “Harley” Wettstein, 100 of rural Pittsburg, KS died Monday February 17, 2020 at the Anderson County Hospital in Garnett, KS.

He was born December 20, 1919 in Pittsburg, KS the son of Henry and Mary (May) Wettstein.

Harold was inducted into the US Navy on July 7, 1944 and was honorably discharged January 27, 1946. He served aboard the USS Hutchins until it was damaged beyond repair during battle in the Asiatic Theater. He was then transferred to the USS Feland where he finished his tour of duty with rank of Seaman 1st Class.

On December 19, 1949 he was united in marriage to Alberta M. Lyden; she preceded him in death on October 8, 2000.

Harley was a carpenter for many years. He worked for Deil Construction and Bob Micheal Construction; he also was a hobby rancher and enjoyed working with his cattle.








Survivors include two daughters: Patsy Badnin of Portland OR, Tonya (Angus) Duff of Overland Park, KS; three sons: Harold L. Wettstein and Donald (Susan) Wettstein both of Garnett, KS, Raymond K. Wettstein of Pittsburg, KS; a brother Fred Wettstein of Pittsburg, along with 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alberta, 9 siblings and a grandson Christopher Lee Wettstein.

Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Tandy officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 am until service time on Saturday. Burial will follow in the Crocker Cemetery.

Joe LeFever

Joe B. LeFever, 78, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 5:50 p.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the Kansas Veteran's Home, Winfield, KS.

He was born April 12, 1941, at El Dorado, KS, the son of William F. and Betty Lou (Knollenberg) LeFever. Mr. LeFever went on to graduate from Augusta High School in 1959 and Pittsburg State University in 1967.

He served in the United States Air Force from September 6, 1962 until his Honorable Discharge on April 10, 1964.

On May 26, 1972, he was united in marriage to Patty Cooseman at Loose Park Rose Garden, Kansas City, MO. She survives of the home.








Mr. LeFever worked as a carpenter for 27 years until his retirement in 2001.

Membership was held in the First Church of the Nazarene, Masonic Lodge #187, Scottish Rite of Fort Scott and the Mirza Shrine.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Will LeFever (DeeDee) of Pittsburg, Matthew LeFever (Brandy) of Cherokee, KS, and Darin LeFever (Janna) of Overland Park, KS, and nine grandchildren; Devon, Drake, Laikyn, Olivia, Brett, Avery, Katie Beth, Luke and Claire.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 24, at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg. Burial will take place at a later date at the Fort Scott National Cemetery.

Calvin Hart

Calvin Rufus James Hart, was born on May 1, 1978 to Mary Hart-Story and Harold Allan Adams in Portland, OR, and his life journey sadly ended on February 10, 2020 at his home in Baxter Springs at the age of 41.

He grew up in Galena, KS and Portland, OR where he attended school in both places throughout his childhood. Calvin was a traveler. He roamed from place to place, and he really enjoyed the outdoors, especially the mountains. He also enjoyed doing mechanic work and watching movies. He was always a prankster and loved pranking our father the most.

Calvin also served in the Army from 2002-2003. During that time he met Juli Rogers. Calvin and Juli then gave birth to their son Jarred Allan Hart who was born on March 19, 2003. He loved his son very much.








He was preceded in death by his father, Harold; his mother, Mary; his brother, Glenn Bollinger; his sister, Beth Bollinger; and his aunt, Rose.

He is survived by his son, Jarred Allan Hart; three sisters, Angela Earl and spouse of Scapoose, OR, Lori and Jimmie Crowe of Burnsflat, OK, and Tammy and James Westendorf of Jane, MO; two brothers, Fred Bollinger of Seguin, TX, and Tyrone Hart of Galena, KS; five nieces, seven nephews, two great-nieces, and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family and friends. Calvin touched a lot of hearts and will be forever missed.

Ruth Hall

Ruth Hall passed away February 16, 2020 at 6:43 PM at Advent Health Hospital in Shawnee Mission, Kansas after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Ruth was born on August 11, 1955 to her parents Ray and Betty McBride of Columbus.

She and William “Mike” Hall were united in marriage on July 9, 1982 in Columbus. They made their home in Olathe, KS.

One child, Matthew Thomas Hall, was born of this union. She also has two step-children: a daughter, Tracy Hall-Turner (husband, Robert), and a son, Adam Hall, both of Orlando, FL; as well as three step-grandchildren, Brent, Seth, and Maggie McConell.








In addition, she is survived by her mother, Betty McBride; a brother, Wesley McBride (wife, Pam) of Sherman, TX; two nieces, Kimberly and Jennifer; sister-in-law Jane Ann Sarwinski (husband, Jim) of Columbus; brother-in-law, Joe Hall (wife, Billie) of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ray McBride; and her mother and father-in-law, Waldo and Betty Hall.

She was employed by the Olathe School System with enrollment of over 29,000 students for 28 years. During her early employment, she established the school district IT Help Desk. At that time, she was a classified training and user provisioning specialist. At the time of her death, she was classified as a Microsoft Support Technician.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 10:00 AM at St. Rose Church in Columbus, KS with Father Jeremy Huser as celebrant. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Columbus.

Rosary will be recited on February 20, 2020 at 6:00 pm at Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 PM.

David Askins

David L. Askins, 61, of Girard, died at 11:35 a.m., Monday, February 17, 2020 in the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

David was born July 26, 1958 in Wichita, the son of Cleo and Esther (Hudson) Askins.

David and his family moved to Girard in 1959 and he attended New Hope Services School in Pittsburg. David later worked as a painter at New Hope.

David received recognition for participating in Special Olympics for 25 years and is named in the Hall of Fame.

David enjoyed weekly bowling with Jim and John, riding his bicycle, attending church, and playing on his computer.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Girard but he attended the Lighthouse Tabernacle in Pittsburg. David attended the Faith and Light group at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Pittsburg.







David is survived by a sister, Maxine Garner, of Girard; his nephews, Eddie Garner, and his wife, Leslie, of Girard, Greg Garner of Girard, and Kurt Garner, and his wife, Zarha, of Indonesia; numerous great-nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clifford Askins.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the Girard Cemetery. Burial will follow the services.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.

Caroline Michael

Caroline “Kay” Michael, 79, of Girard, died at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 17, 2020 in the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

Caroline was born January 24, 1941 in Goodland, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Eva Marie (Sponsel) Harbold.

Caroline married Robert Keith Michael on February 14, 1959 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Girard. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1998.

Caroline worked as a CAN and a CMA at the Heritage Nursing Home in Girard before retiring in 1996.

She enjoyed crocheting and fishing.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Girard.








Survivors include her children, John Michael, and his wife, Susan, of Mulberry, Ronnie Michael, and his wife, Anita, David Michael, and Rick Michael, all of Girard; her daughters Debbie Nooteboon of Girard and Tammy Tavernaro, and her husband, Jim, of Bentonville, Arkansas; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Bob Michael, on January 22, 2018, and a daughter, Lisa Ann Michael, in September of 1965. 

Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.

Patricia Keating

Patricia Sue Warzel Keating, age 93, a resident of Fort Scott, passed away Friday, February 14th, 2020 at the Kansas University Medical Center. Daughter of Gus and Grace (Good) Warzel, she was born in Fort Scott on April 20th,1926. 

Educated in the Fort Scott school system, Patricia graduated High School with the Class of 1943. She and her sister, Edith joined the Cadet Nurse Core in 1944.graduating in 1947. Patricia met many of her lifelong friends while in nurses training. 

Upon completion of the program, she worked as a registered nurse for Doctors Hubert and Leland Randles in the Randles Clinic, Fort Scott. It was there, she met the love of her life, Edward Michael Keating. 

Together with her sister Edith Warzel and Bernard Gorman, they were married June 9, 1949, in a double wedding ceremony at Mary Queen of Angels Church in Fort Scott. Patricia remained a lifelong member of the parish. 

Ed preceded her in death on February 3rd, 2013 Patricia’s life was devoted to her faith and family and they were the greatest source of her joy. She loved deeply and prayed constantly. Her life was a testament to us all and ours will be forever changed without her.








Patricia is survived by her six children, twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren with two on the way and two great great grandchildren with one on the way. Doris Gaston

Doris Louise Gaston, 95 of rural Pittsburg, died February 17, 2020 at her home. She was born June 12, 1924 to Lonnie and Marie (Stockton) Bower. She was a graduate of the Cherokee County Rural High School.

On February 14, 1946 she was married to Galen A. Gaston and he preceded her in death on August 13, 2008. She was an active leader of the 4 H Clothing Project Leader and Secretary of National Farmers Organizations for many years. She also belonged with her husband to the Gents and Janes Square Dance Club.








Survivors include daughter; Lorna (Gary) Alford of Galena, Kansas. One brother; Cloyd Bower of Asbury, Missouri, 7 grandchildren; Kelly (Jim) Martin of Everett, Washington, Amy (Stephen) Huber of Leawood, Missouri, Penny (Todd) Murdock of Joplin, Missouri, Renae Jessip of Frontenac, Kansas, Garric (Kara) Alford of Galena Kansas, Anette (Nathan) Hosier of Scammon, Kansas. 9 step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was one son; Dennis Gaston, two Brothers; Junior and Leroy Bower, one Granddaughter; Anissa Shook.Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday February 21, 2020 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, Kansas. Bill Cook

William Lee Cook, age 69 of Columbus, KS, passed away at Medicalodge South in Pittsburg at 3:55 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2020.

Bill was born to Daily Brown and Pauline Mee on September 13, 1950 in Crossville, TN. In 1958, Bill, his sister Connie Lou, and his brother Jack Kenneth were adopted by Joseph Wayne Cook and Betty Jean (Cummings) Cook, and joined the family with their daughter, Vicki Jo Cook. 

Bill was an apprentice of Harry King of Columbus, KS at King’s Garage, starting in 7th grade and working through high school. He worked as mechanic for many years. He enjoyed singing bass in Choraliers, and played french horn in the CUHS band. Nicknamed “Cookie” among his classmates, he graduated with the Class of 1968 from CUHS in Columbus, KS. 








After high school he joined the Navy in 1968, where he proudly served for several years including wartime in Vietnam. After his return, he and Twyla (Ford) Cook were married on July 31, 1972. They had 3 children, Ernest Odell, Darrell Cook, and Joseph Cook.

Survivors are his wife, Twyla Cook; one son Joseph Cook (wife, Gloria), a sister, Connie; a brother, Jack; and a sister, Vicki; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his adopted parents, Joseph and Betty Jean Cook; one step-son, Ernest Odell; and one son, Darrell Cook.

Lynne Sexton

Lynne Kay Fulkerson-Sexton, 58, of Parsons, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at her home.

She was born on April 28, 1961 in Winfield, KS to Pat and Joyce (Obenhaus) Fulkerson. Lynne graduated from Erie High School and received and Associates degree in accounting from Neosho County Community College. She had worked as a home health care giver in previous years.

Lynne was a free spirit who loved spending time in nature by taking long walks with her pups, camping and horseback riding. She also had a strong faith and attended Parsons Foursquare Church where she especially enjoyed hearing the Word and singing to Jesus. Lynne adored all her grandchildren and loved going to their various games, dance recitals and school programs.

She and Kenneth Sexton were married in 1979. They later divorced.








Survivors include her five daughters, Jessica Keaton of Parsons, Stephanie White of Parsons, Jackie Fulkerson of Kansas City, MO, Tori Fulkerson of Parsons and Treniti Brown of Kansas City, MO; eight grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; her mother, Joyce Howard-Ging of Erie; two brothers, Mike Howard of Altamont and Jamie Fulkerson of Cherryvale; one sister, Marsha Mitchell of Erie.

John Fox

John Granville Fox, 55, of rural McCune, passed away unexpectedly Sunday February 16th on his way to go fishing near his farm in McCune Ks.

He was born January 5, 1965 in Columbus Ks, to Kenneth and Bonnie Gard Fox. His grandparents were Granville and Mary Fox and Charles and Bernice Gard.

John attended Harding Academy and played football for Harding University in Searcy Arkansas.

John met and fell in love with Cathie Lynn Binns while he was attending college. They married on Sept 9th at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Jim Citty. They had two daughters together Chelsea and Chaney. Cathy preceded him in death on August 8th 1994. John never remarried.








John moved back to McCune to be close to family and raise his daughters. He drove a propane truck for McCune Co-op. He enjoyed serving and visiting with his neighbors on his deliveries.

John was an avid fisherman and gardener. He loved teaching his grandchildren and any youngsters how to fish. He enjoyed being out in nature, especially on his farm. His garden was enormous. He loved to load any visitors up with bags of his beautiful veggies, corn and tomatoes were his specialty. You could taste the love that he put into the produce.

John is survived by two beloved daughters, and grandchildren. Chelsea Fox and her husband Toby Wertz and their sons William and Wade of Oswego, KS, and Chaney Fox and her fiancé Tanner Stewart of Pittsburg, KS.

Other survivors include one sister, Connie Carbary and her family William and Tayren; two Brothers, Mark Fox and his wife Betty, and their children, Ashley and Charles Starks; Kenneth Fox and his wife Jenn, and their children Bryan, Sky and Rebecca; one uncle, William Gard; two aunts, Ramona Fox and Aunt Nancy Gard. Special cousins, Kevin Fox and his wife Joyce, Lori Brake and her husband Tim, and Debbie Neblett and husband Jeff. As well as numerous other family and countless friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Cathie Binns Fox, mother and father Kenneth and Bonnie Fox, Uncle David Gard, Uncle Robert Gard, and Uncle Fred Fox.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, February 21, 2020, at the Brenner Mortuary. A private burial will be at a later date in the McCune City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials be given to the Grandchildren’s Educational Fund. Casey Mooney

Casey Wayne Mooney, 37, of Pittsburg, passed away of a sudden illness Friday, February 14, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born January 21, 1983 at Pittsburg, the son of Bruce Wayne and Lisa Ann (Armstrong) Mooney. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 2001, where he played football for four years. Following high school, he attended Pittsburg State University.

On September 17 2005, he was united in marriage to Melissa Smith at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg. Together, they have two sons, Jaxon and Dawsyn.

Casey worked for the City of Pittsburg for ten years. For the last 7 years, he has worked for Class LTD, but his job he was most proud of was being a stay at home dad.

Those who knew Casey, know he never knew a stranger, and everyone was drawn to him for his one of a kind personality and charm. He was the epitome of what a good person, husband and father should be. Casey had a passion for hunting and fishing, playing football and being a huge Chiefs fan.










He is survived by his wife, Melissa of the home; two sons, Jaxon and Dawsyn Mooney of the home; his parents, Bruce and Lisa Mooney of Pittsburg; Maternal Grandfather, Jack Armstrong; Paternal Grandmother, Margaret “Maggie” Mooney; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Katie and Dillon Young; niece, Hayden Young; brother-in-law, Steven Smith; mother-in-law, Debbie Leahan and her husband Steve; father-in-law, Steve Smith and his wife, Katherine; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Doris Armstrong; paternal grandfather, Tom Mooney and, paternal grandmother, Charlene Mooney; Grandma Mac; Aunt Ellen and Uncle Ralph; and his cousin, Justin Mooney.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, February 20, 2020 at The Barn with Chaplain Adah Hutchcraft officiating. Following the services, the family will receive friends at the home of his parents, Bruce and Lisa at 478 S. 200th St., Pittsburg. Karen Stewart

Karen Lynn Stewart, age 70, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 14, 2020, at her home. She was born February 8, 1950, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Robert Johnson and Beverly Struble Johnson.

She married Paul Stewart on September 27, 1974, at Nevada, Missouri. In earlier years, she worked for the Western Insurance Company and owned her own beauty shop. She later operated the Great Scott Restaurant for a time. Karen enjoyed traveling and attending her grandchildren’s activities. She also enjoyed playing cards and going to the casinos.








Survivors include her husband, Paul, of the home; her son, Bryan Slavens and wife, Hallie, of Pittsburg, Kansas and five grandchildren, Wesley, Winston, Jace, Brennan and Peyton Slavens. Also surviving is her sister, Kathy Adams, of Florida. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Johnson and Beverly Johnson Scott and an infant son, Brad Slavens.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 22nd at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
