Martha Dobkins

Martha Elizabeth McCormick Dobkins, 99, of Columbus, died at Medicalodge in Columbus, Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2020.

Martha was born July 5, 1920 in Corona, KS. She was the daughter of George Armstead and Lula (Spencer) McCormick.

Martha was united in marriage to Homer Martin Dobkins on December 12, 1938 in Fredonia, KS. This marriage was celebrated for 69 years. Homer preceded Martha in death, December 28, 2007.
Martha started her schooling at the old one room Millersburg School. Later she attended Stepville School. Then her schooling continued at Central School in Columbus, and then Columbus High School. She was not able to finish High school. But later in 1986, along with her older sister Anna M. Buergin, they completed their GEDs with honors.

Martha worked for Maude Norton Hospital in the 1950’s for five years before moving to Fort Collins, Colorado in November of 1957. Upon arriving in Colorado, she worked for Eventide Nursing Home for three years. After leaving the employment of Eventide Nursing Home, Martha began her career working for Woodward Governer for 23 years, retiring in 1982.

After Martha retired the decision was made to return to Columbus. Homer and Martha spent a lot of time with their siblings and their families. Also enjoying time with children and grandchildren.
Martha was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crestline, KS and attended regularly as long as she was able. She served as a clerk for many years. She loved cooking for the many family gatherings and for the church dinners they had.








In August of 1998 Homer and Martha celebrated their upcoming 60th Wedding Anniversary early so that all of their children and grandchildren could attend. This was a two day and two night retreat at the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado. This retreat was successful due to Martha’s good planning and persistence. Martha loved caring for her plants. She was very good. Her favorite were the African Violets.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Frank, Theodore (Dugan), and George W. McCormick; and three sisters, Anna M. Buergin, Agnes Naomi Barrett, and Susie Ruth Baird. Also preceding Martha in death was a grandson Travis Brauch.

Survivors include two sons, H. Wayne Dobkins of Columbus, and David Lee Dobkins of Cortez, Colorado, three daughters, Betty Jane Burr of Ft Collins, Colorado, Mary Lou Brauch of Cedaredge, Colorado, and Margaret Dobkins of Loveland, Colorado. Also, Martha has a number of nieces and nephews living in the Columbus area, and across the country; and one sister-in-law Mildred Lerner of Sun City, California.

Also surviving Martha are 11 grandchildren, Noble Dobkins (Sara) of Columbus, KS, Angel Ashby (Chris) of Las Vegas, NV, Dolly Stoddart (Jared), and Mary Jane Johnston (Ryan) from North Las Vegas, NV, Danny Burr (Sue) of Golden Valley, Arizona, Ken Burr (Cristie) of San Jose, California, Barb Huff (Dana) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Tom Brauch (Suzett) Castle Rock, Colorado, Lance Brauch of Penrose, Colorado, Jim Lemer (Kelly) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Matt Lemer of Loveland, Colorado.

Great grandchildren include Archer, Chesney, Kemper, Blaze, Justus, Aspen, Stephen, Alex, Christina, Jordan, Maddox, Abigail, Hope, Katie, Trinten, Kody, Blake, Danielle, Emily, Camille, Hayden, and Liesl.

The family will receive friends from 9 AM-10AM Saturday, March 7th at Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus.

Funeral Services will follow at 10:00 AM at Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus. Pastor Paul Duncan will officiate. Burial will be in Edgmand Cemetery in rural Columbus.

In charge of the music will be Dan Duncan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Crestline.
