Rosita Fitzgerald, 87, passed away peacefully September 23, 2019, at Sunrise at Reston Town Center in Reston, Virginia. Rosita was born in Santa Bárbara, Honduras, Central America, on March 28, 1932, the daughter of Corb Ray Cruickshank and Alice Frances Howard Cruickshank.
Rosita moved to Hallowell, Cherokee County, Kans., at age 5, with her mother and brother Herbert Howard Cruickshank. She graduated from Cherokee County Community High School, in Columbus, Kans., and was voted Miss Columbus. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Columbus, where she sang in the church choir. She continued to enjoy music throughout her life.
Rosita married Lyndell Worth Fitzgerald on September 11, 1955. In 1959, Rosita and her husband, along with their two sons, Gregg and Douglas, moved to Manhattan, Kans., where they resided until 1965. Subsequent moves took the family to Lafayette, Ind., Roseville, Minn., Rome, Italy, and Reston, Va, where she and her husband resided until she was called to Heaven.
Rosita was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who never lost her childhood memories of Columbus where she'd often return to visit family and friends. Her travels also took her to many parts of Europe with her family, and later she accompanied her husband to Africa and Central and South America. She encouraged her sons in their pursuits in music and in sports and was a fan of K-State basketball, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Washington Redskins.
Rosita was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, Worth, and siblings Herb Cruickshank and Dennis Robinson. Rosita is survived by her two children: Gregg (Donna) Fitzgerald of South Lebanon, Ohio, and Douglas (Mary Ann) Fitzgerald of Vienna, Va., and her grandchildren Lauren Fitzgerald of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nicholas Fitzgerald of Vienna, Va, and Jessica Fitzgerald of Washington, D.C., and brother Stan Robinson of Columbus.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, at Derfelt Funeral Home, 132 East Pine Street, Columbus, followed by a burial service at Columbus Park Cemetery, located at 173 Southeast Wyandotte Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Processing Center, Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.
