Alberta Newby

Alberta M. Newby, 92, longtime Parsons resident, died at 12:30 P.M., Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the Presbyterian Manor.

She was born May 20, 1927 at Parsons, a daughter of Earl Ross and Ruth Anna (Gillette) Harris. She lived her life in Labette County, having attended school at Parsons. Upon graduating from the Parsons High School in 1945 she attended the Parsons Junior College for one year. During her career, she worked in accounting at the Katy Railroad where she used the Comptometer. She later managed the former Peter Pan ice cream store and was a telephone operator. She was also the bookkeeper at the First Baptist Church.

On December 1, 1946 she and Raymond E. Newby were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church at Parsons. He survives of the home.

She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church. She was also a former member of the Salem E.H.U. and a former member of the Embroiders Guild of America. She enjoyed needlework and making and dressing reproduction antique dolls.








In addition to her husband, survivors include: three sons – Bill Newby, of Oswego, KS, Alan Newby, Of Collinsville, OK, David Newby, of Broken Arrow, OK, one daughter – Carol Jackson, of Bettendorf, IA; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother – John T. Harris, of Columbus, KS.

She was preceded in death by one brother – Richard E. Harris; one sister – Anna Ruth Kephart and one granddaughter – Abbey (Jackson) Kopatich.

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 3, 2019 at the First Baptist Church with Travis Ball officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Proud Animal Lovers Shelter and may be left or mailed to the funeral home, P.O.
