Bill Haner

William Charles “Bill” Haner Sr, passed away Monday morning, April 6, 2020 at his home after courageously battling ill heath the past 3 years.

Bill was born September 11, 1938 in Galena, KS. His parents were Ralph Harlow and Blanch (Moody) Haner Sr. Bill was the 7th of the 11 Haner children and the last to leave this earth.

He graduated from Riverton High School with the class of 1956. Except for the year 1960, he lived his life on the Haner compound in Galena, until moving at a little cabin on Shoal Creek.

He spent his hard working life in a variety of fields. He was a master of all trades. He began working in 1957 at Red Alley Filling Station. He had also worked at Starlight tool manufacturing in Joplin, Trucking delivery produce, Yellow freight system in Baxter, and Quaker Hill and Galena nursing homes. He worked as a caregiver to Helen manning for the last 15 years of her life. He enjoyed mowing lawns, fields, brush-hogging, tilling gardens, clearing debris, and collecting salvage.

Bill was instrumental in building the Baxter Springs Saddle Club arena. His favorite interests were working with tractors, and horses.

Bill was married to Betty Ruth Hopkins on November 22, 1957. She survives.








Additional survivors include one son, William “Bill” Haner Jr, Pittsburg, KS; one daughter, Sherry Albright (husband, Danny), Galena, KS; 3 grandchildren, Tori Danley (husband, Rusty), Galena, Trevor Albright, Springfield, MO, and Tylor Albright, Fayetteville, AR; four great-grandchildren, Destiny Gandy, Dani Jo Gandy, Myka Danley and Jacob Danley; and a large number of nieces, nephews and a large clan of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Ralph, Robert, Edwin, and Ben and 6 sisters, Margaret Helen, Effie, Bonnie, Carol, Mayme, and Bessie.

He was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS for cremation. The family will schedule a memorial service at a later time after the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
