Gene McAtee

Floyd Eugene ‘Gene’ McAtee passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018 in Overland Park, Kansas. Gene had suffered with Alzheimer’s Disease for several years.

Gene was born on March 21, 1935 in Walnut, Kansas, to George and Adele (Brazil) McAtee.

After graduating high school in St. Paul in 1954 he attended Tulsa University. He next moved to southern California and worked in the family catering business for a few years.

After returning to southeast Kansas, he married Barbara Nunnink on June 4, 1960 in Parsons where they raised 4 children.

He worked for KCP&L, then later as a self-employed farmer. In 1979 he bought a Daylight Donut Franchise and later purchased McAtee Liquor Store.

After retiring he and wife Barbara briefly moved to a golfing community in Carl Junction and then later settled in Gardner.

Gene was an accomplished athlete. He participated in baseball, softball, golf and basketball. He also enjoyed coaching his children’s sporting teams and watching his grandkids sporting events. After retirement he became a self-taught golfer where he excelled and had 7 hole-in-ones.

Gene was very active in the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Gene is survived by 3 children in the Kansas City area – Dean McAtee of Olathe, Lisa Lowe of Overland Park, and Nick McAtee of Shawnee, 1 son-in-law - Mike Lowe, 2 daughters-in-law - Sheryl McAtee and Jill McAtee, 2 grandchildren – Brandon and Haley McAtee, and one brother - Leonard McAtee of St. Paul.

Gene was preceded in death by wife Barbara, daughter Lynn, parents George and Adele McAtee, 5 brothers - Donald, Harold, Jim, GW (Short) and Paul McAtee, and 3 sisters - Mary Lou (Sis) Crager, Margie Crager, and Katie Smith.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 17, 2018 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at Parsons with Fr. Curtis Robertson officiating. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Visitation will follow. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
