Stan Gavin

Stanley (Stan) Douglas Gavin, 68, passed away Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO following a long illness.

He was born October 15, 1949 to loving parents, Frank and Elizabeth Ann (Schirk) in Independence, Kansas. He was the youngest of three children.

He attended and graduated from St. Mary's Colgan High School in 1967 where he played basketball and baseball. He went on to attend and graduate from Pittsburg State University with a degree in accounting. He served our country in the Army National Guard during college.

He later owned and operated his own business. As a retired adult, he enjoyed reading (especially crime novels), playing golf, and watching sports on TV. He was an avid fan of the KC Royals, KC Chiefs, and Kansas Jayhawks Basketball.

Stan will be remembered for his intelligence, his quick wit, his fun sense of humor, and his love for his children and grandchildren. His greatest earthly treasure was his wonderful family.

Stan is survived by his children, Lisa Dungan (Husband L.J.) of Pittsburg, KS; Kenny Gavin (Wife Dina) of Rogers, AR; and Caiti Gavin of Rogers, AR. Stan is further survived by his grandchildren Kaleb, Sophia, Bella, and Bexley. Left also to grieve are his sister Cindy Schmitz (Husband Dave) of Houston, TX, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Stan’s cousin Bob Schirk was especially close and helpful to Stan during his final months. Stan was preceded in death by his wife Donna (Haraughty) Gavin, his brother Michael Gavin, his parents, and his children’s mother, Dian Loy.

A celebration of Stan’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 7) at the Brenner Mortuary. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to a fund set up for his four grandchildren to contribute to their future education. The family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support during Stan’s illness. Although Stan lives on forever in our hearts, his presence will be greatly missed.
