Merritt Vandris

Merritt Lee Vandris, 78, of Pittsburg, passed away at 8:11 a.m. Monday, December 25, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital.

He was born December 3, 1939 at West Mineral, Kansas, the son of Merritt and Ruth (McGuire) Vandris. He was a lifetime area resident and graduated from Pittsburg High School.

In his youth, Merritt enjoyed playing football, baseball and running track. After high school, he started racing motorcycles professionally. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. Mr. Vandris worked at Dickey Clay for eleven years. He was also a country music dance instructor, worked construction and had numerous other careers.

Survivors include a son, Brad Vandris of Rogers, Arkansas; two daughters, Debra Anthony of Pittsburg and Kim Vandris of Rogers, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Jason Morgan, Kristen Anthony, and Katelyn Wieneke; and a great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Morgan. He also had the support of many life-long friends.

Merritt is best remembered for his passion for life. Everyday was a new adventure with him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant siblings, and a son, Craig Vandris.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday (December 29) at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor. Annie Ricker officiating. Interment will be in the Star Cemetery, near West Mineral, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to the SEK Humane Society and/or Wesley House. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
