John Urankar

John V. Urankar (98), died on December 29, 2017 at Guest Home Estates in Pittsburg, KS. 

He was born in Breezy Hill, KS. on June 6th, 1919 to Vincent and Frances (Ziebert) Urankar. 

He married Peggy McQueen on Dec. 25th 1940. She preceded him in death in 1979. John served in WW II with the 40th Combat Engineers. After his tour of duty he opened a neighborhood grocery store in Pittsburg. In 1950 he was recalled to service and spent a year in Korea. He began a career with the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 29 years of service. In 1978 he purchased a 40-acre farm where he raised beef cattle for 30 years. For many years he made sausage that his family and friends enjoyed. He was a member of the American Legion and SNPJ Lodge for over 70 years. 

Survivors include his daughter Karen (Richard) Demboski of Dublin, OH., grandson, John (Susan) Demboski of Denver CO., granddaughters, Amy (Tim) James Columbus, OH., and Jennifer Demboski, Dublin, OH. He is also survived by three great- grandchildren, Iris, Olivia, and Luke. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother Frank Urankar and his special friend and companion Doris Wilkin. 

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday (January 2) at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac, KS, with Father Thomas Stroot officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials be given to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery Fund.
