Scott Baker

Scott Lee Baker, 63, passed away suddenly at his home on March 22, 2020. He was born October 14th, 1956, in Joplin, Missouri, the son of Jack and Margie (Burkhart) Baker.

Scott graduated from Riverton High School in 1974, where he was an active participant in football, basketball, band, and Math League. Following high school, he graduated from Pittsburg State University, earning a Bachelors of Arts degree in Business.

He was married twice, the first being with Kim Watkins of Lowell, KS and the second, with Christie Meinhardt of Kansas City, MO.

For 40 years, Scott worked in the insurance profession, ultimately becoming an underwriter for American Family Insurance. Of those 40 years, 35 were spent in the Kansas City area until he retired in 2019.








He is preceded in death by his father, Jack Baker; his mother, Margie Baker; and a sister, Cathy (Baker) Frazier.

He is survived by two sons, Matthew Baker of Seattle, WA, and James Baker and longtime girlfriend Tonia Wright of Joplin, MO; Two sisters, Sharon Baker and family friend Jolene Baker of Joplin, MO, and Jacque Hartley and husband Lynn of Baxter Springs, KS; One niece, Billie Jo (Frazier) Humphrey and husband Jeremie of Baxter Springs, KS; Two nephews, Drew Hartley of Joplin, MO, and Brett Hartley of Baxter Springs, KS.

Growing up, Scott was a member of the Church of Christ where he became an avid reader of the Bible, and enjoyed religious discussion with others. Aside from church, he enjoyed traveling across the country and studying varying eras of history.

In respect to the current COVID-19 pandemic, no public services are planned at this time. There will be a private family graveside service on Wednesday, April 1 in Carl Junction, MO. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
