Charlene Stapleton

Charlene Ann Stapleton, a life-long resident of Baxter Springs, passed away at her home on September 9th, 2019. She was a pillar in the community and had a servant’s heart. She helped those around her and beyond every day of her life. Charlene was born on July 26th, 1940 in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Charlene was born to John Edwin Hess and Frances Louise Thomas Hess. Charlene attended Baxter Springs schools and graduated in 1958. She attended Joplin Business College in 1959 and worked at Empire District Electric Company.

She married Clarence Ray Hill in July 1959, and they were married for over 36 years. Clarence passed away in October of 1995. She married Charles “Chuck” LeRoy Stapleton on November 2, 2002. Clarence and Charlene owned and operated FoodFair Grocery Store from 1971-1978 at 12th and Military in Baxter Springs. FoodFair was later changed to True Value Hardware in 1978. Charlene was the best plumber, paint-mixer, and pipe cutter around. She definitely knew her hardware.

She is survived by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Stapleton of the home. One daughter, Lisa Hill Clark and husband, Rick of Hot Springs, Arkansas. One son, Mark Hill and wife, Laura, of Marietta, Georgia. One step-son, Chad Stapleton, and wife Stephanie, of Galena, Kansas. Two siblings, one sister, Geniene Kuehn of Baxter Springs and one brother, John Edwin Hess, II and wife Shirley, of Wagoner, Oklahoma.








Charlene is also survived by three grandchildren, grandson Connor Lawrence Hill, of Atlanta, Georgia, grandson Colby Austin Clark, and wife, Megan, of Fayetteville, AR, and granddaughter Taylor Anne Hill, of Dothan, Alabama. And one great-grandson, Beckham Lane Clark. Four step-grandchildren, Jared Lee Clark and family and Janae Renee Schoonover and family of Grove, Oklahoma, Cade Stapleton and Cadie Stapleton of Galena, Kansas. As well as many well-loved nieces and nephews and extended family. Charlene loved life and her family.

Charlene is preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Hess; husband, Clarence Hill; brother-in-law, Charles F. Kuehn, Jr.

Charlene was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church all her live and was very active there, including teaching Cathechism classes for many years. She was the treasurer of the St. Joseph Alter Society for many years. She also served on the Baxter Springs Historical Museum board.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 13, 2019 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel. Father Jeremy Huser and Father Chrysostom Ah Maung will officiate. Burial of ashes will follow in the Lowell Cemetery. Rosary will be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel with visitation to follow starting at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donation may be made to (EWTN) Eternal World Television Network in care of the funeral home.
