Evelyn Lett

Evelyn L. Lett, 93, of Parsons, passed away at 7 a.m., Thursday, April 30, 2020 at the Elmhaven Nursing Home in Parsons.

She was born on August 8, 1926 at Altamont to Earl and Grace (Brown) Swofford. She grew up at Parsons and attended Parsons schools graduating from Parsons High School in 1944.

She worked at the Kansas Ordnance Plant and was the first person at the plant to receive the teletype message that the Japanese surrendered and that the war was over. Evelyn later worked at Newberry’s, Kress, Leon Crooks Studio, Sears, and then at Olson’s Grocery Store where she worked in the meat department. She retired from there when it was Roosters Grocery Store in 1982.

Evelyn enjoyed camping, photobook making, going on route 66 trips, family gatherings, and her grandchildren. She was part of a group that wrote round robin letters to each other for over 70 years.

She and Bob R. Lett were married on July 10, 1944 at the First Baptist Church in Parsons. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2005.








Evelyn is survived by four daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Spriggs of Oswego, Jacquelyn “Jackie” Dhooghe, and her husband, John of Parsons, Patricia “Patty” Tolman, and her husband, Floyd of Valley Center, and Connie Murphy, and her husband, Mike of Gentry, AR; ten grandchildren, Regina Richardson, Cindy Smith, John Dhooghe, Dustin Ewbank, Cristi Hothan, Kayla Myers, Miranda Lett, Bryson Green, Kierstin Green, and Jason Stapleton; nine great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; her brother, Don Swofford Parsons.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded by her son, David R. Lett, on February 27, 2006.

Private family services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2020 at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery Patio. Burial will follow.

Friends may come to the Carson-Wall Funeral Home to sign the register.
