Byron Carter

(From Carson-Wall Funeral Home)

Byron J. Carter, 28, of rural Parsons, passed away at 8:28 a.m., Monday, May 11, 2020 at the family home.

He was born October 19, 1991, in Parsons, to Gary and Vonda (Stringer) Carter. He was born with a physical disability but blessed with a wonderful mind. He determined to never let his condition define him and or stop him from accomplishing what he set out to do. He was an avid learner and was a student of history.

Byron graduated from Labette County High School in 2011, primarily earning all A’s and with a class standing of 14 out of 123 graduates. He graduated from Coffeyville Community College with honors. Currently he was an online student at Colorado State University working toward a bachelor’s degree in Agri Business. He worked as a consultant in keeping family farm records.

Some of his many interests included Nascar, trucks, PS2, computers, cell phones, camping, hunting, fishing, being out of doors, animals, nature and bird watching. He was involved in scouting several years. He liked watching and reading westerns, action movies, Scooby Doo, John Wayne movies and history. He was a country music fan of performers such as Toby Keith, Keith Urban, George Strait, Hank Sr., The “Hag”, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. He also enjoyed classical and rock and roll music. Byron took art classes and enjoyed drawing and painting when he could.

Byron had a sense of humor and was a determined, caring, compassionate, intelligent young man and worried about everyone but himself. He never wanted any special treatment, preferring to be treated like everyone else.

A friend told his family that if you were to look up the work “courage” in the dictionary you would see a picture of Byron in his wheelchair. Others have said that he is the bravest person they have ever known. He was a strong advocate for those with disabilities and would write letters to politicians, organizations, and insurance providers standing up for the disabled. He had a strong faith and was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was always there to listen to people and to offer advice. He was a role model for his nieces, who called him “Bubba”.

Byron is survived by his parents, Gary and Vonda Carter of the home, his sister Stephanie Carter and nieces Guadalupe and Isabella Carter, of Altamont; maternal grandparents, Lloyd and Jolene Stringer of Altamont; paternal grandparents, Bob and Marilyn Carter of Winfield; aunts and uncles, Jeff Stringer (Vicki Souter) of Parsons, Vicki Stice (Joe) of Altamont, Joni Stringer (Greg Fincher) of Altamont, Gregory Carter of Thayer, Gerry Carter of Paola and Galen Carter of Lawrence.

The private Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Curtis Robertson officiating. The rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m., prior to the Mass. A public committal service will be at approximately 11:30 a.m., at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, southwest of Parsons. Friends are welcome to sign the register at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home on Wednesday until 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to an education fund for his nieces. Checks should be made to Gary or Vonda Carter. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357. Online messages may be left at www.wallfuneralservices.com
