Donald Wertz

Donald Forrest Wertz, age 82, passed away at 6:00 am, Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Prairie Mission Retirement Village, St Paul, KS following an illness.

Mr Wertz was born November 29, 1936 in Oswego, KS. His parents were Forrest John Wertz and Mary Emma (Williams) Wertz. He was one of 8 children. He had lived in Erie the past 33 years. He had previously lived in the Oswego and Altamont area.

He graduated from the Altamont High School in 1954. He worked as a machinist at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita for 15 years. He later worked in Chanute, Parsons, and Pittsburg, retiring in 2000.

Donald was a member of the Oswego Assembly of God where he had served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and was a former member of the National Geographic Society. He loved music and played the guitar. He favorite genre was gospel and bluegrass. Don played with the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers Club. He also enjoyed antique cars and tractors and collecting pocket watches. He was a man who loved God, family and friends.

Donald was married to Imogene Breeden on Nov 27, 1955. She passed away January 10, 1982. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Gerald Wertz and Vernon Wertz, one sister, Evelyn Perry and 2 grandchildren.

He married Lily B Barlow on May 25, 1985 in Humboldt, KS. She survives.








Additional survivors are 2 sons, Virgil Glenn Wertz, Iola, KS, and Phillip Duane Wertz (Debby), Newton, KS; one daughter, Donna Lynn Thomas (Donald), Newton, KS; one brother, Marvin ”Butch” Wertz, Oswego; 3 sisters, Ellen Ehrlich, Hutchinson, KS, Marlene Walker (Eldon), Oswego, and Barbara Shetley (Rick), Oswego; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the Oswego Assembly of God. Eldon Walker will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego, KS.
