Gregory W. “Greg” Peck, 64, of rural Erie, longtime cattle rancher, passed away at 2:03 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on November 19, 1954 at Parsons to Ernest J. and Helen (Featherstone) Peck. Greg grew up at Parsons and Altoona before the family moved to rural Erie in 1964 where he attended Erie schools graduating from Erie High School in 1972.
After high school he went to work for his father in the Peck family cattle business. Ernest Peck purchased the Neosho Valley Cow Pool in 1961. This became the beginning of the Peck family cattle enterprise. Upon Ernie’s passing, Greg and his brother, Gene took over the operation in 1981. This became the birth of the Peck Brothers Cattle Company. Greg has maintained the sole proprietorship of the operation since 2010. Greg’s job was his passion, his pride was his quality cattle, and his pleasure was improving the grasslands. Greg enjoyed attending different sale barns in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and Iowa throughout his career. He especially enjoyed traveling to the Flint Hills of Central Kansas. Participation in the cattle industry allowed Greg to earn many lifelong friends over the years.
He was a member of the Erie Baptist Church. Greg was a faithful Christian man who loved his family dearly. He really loved singing Christian music, participating in the choir, and singing solos and duets.
He and Virginia Sue “Susie” Semon were married on August 12, 1978 at the Erie Christian Church. She survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, Greg is survived by two sons, Ethan Jay “EJ” Peck of rural Erie and Brandon Clay Peck, and his wife Victoria of rural Erie; his granddaughter, Blaise Peck of rural Erie; two brothers, Michael “Mike” Peck, and his wife, Glenda of Wichita and Gene Peck, and his wife, Joyce of Erie; two sisters, Marcetta Helms, and her husband, David of Canton, GA and Rogenea Peck-Torres of Oelwein, IA; 16 nieces; 14 nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Casey Welch.
Greg will be remembered by all that knew him. He never met a stranger and treated all with respect and kindness. He leaves a legacy that will continue within the industry, family and friends. “Greg was a good hand, a good man, well thought of by everyone and a gentleman in all his business dealings. Rest in peace Greg. May all your pastures be stirrup high in bluestem grass and well watered, stocked with cattle that never lose a dime. See you down the road. It feels nice to be important but it’s important to be nice.”
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Erie High School Gymnasium with Pastor Danny Flippo officiating. Burial will follow in the East Hill Cemetery at Erie. Friends may call the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home at their convenience after 9 a.m. on Thursday where the casket will remain closed.
