Robert Hill

Robert E. Hill, 74, of Girard, died at 10:05 p.m., Tuesday, August 21, 2018 in Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Rob was born August 8, 1944 in Girard, a son of Willard and Ida (Palmer) Hill. Rob grew up in Girard and graduated from Girard High School in 1962.

He served in the US Army and the US Air Force in Viet Nam from 1964 until 1969.

Rob graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1974 with a BS in Accounting. He worked as an accountant for HMS Enterprises in Brazilton, Kansas from 1974 until retiring to Waldron, Arkansas in 2007.

Rob returned to Girard in 2016.

Rob was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Carbondale, Kansas and the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard where he served 5 terms as Commander, Adjutant for over 33 years, and 2 terms as 3rd District Commander.

Rob enjoyed his family, fishing, and hunting.

In 1988, Rob, Dennis “Little” Gillard, and Randy Geier helped organize and establish a fund for “The Big Flag” memorial at the American Legion in Girard before it was first raised in 1991.
Survivors are Rob’s son, Shane Hill, and his wife, Shauna, of Athens, Texas; his sisters, Wilma Pulliam of Girard and Mary McVey of Mineola, Texas; his grandchildren, David Worley, Kaela Lopez, and Lauren Sams; his great-grandchildren, Nolan Sams and Rylee Worley; his lifelong family friends are John Slavin of Waldron and Bill Slavin of Warsaw, Missouri; a niece and nephew; his dog, Saint.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Arthur, Marion, and George Hill; a sister, Freda Noe.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday at the Girard Cemetery with Commander John Hocevar officiating. Burial will follow the services with Military Honor given by the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard. 

Visitation will be Thursday from 7:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m., friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to “The Big Flag” and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
