Howard Wammack

Howard Irving Wammack, age 89 of Baxter Springs (formerly of Galena), went to rest on Wed March 1, 2017, at Quaker Hill Nursing facility. Howard was born on Jan. 30, 1928 in Paolo, KS to Harlan and Edna (Lyons) Wammack.

On Sept 21, 1946, Howard was married to Vera Fay (Vaughan) in Childress, Tx, where Howard worked for Union Pacific Railroad as an Engine Painter. They’d have 3 daughters together. In 1955, the family would move to Galena. Howard would go to work at Roots Manufacturer in Baxter, then with a Construction Paving Company building the main streets of Galena. He spent many years working for Wimer Tire, Goodyear, and would eventually retire from Burgraff Tire, in Joplin.

In 1995, he would be married for the second time to Imogene Craig, they would reside together in Baxter Springs. Howard was an active member of the Kingdom Hall Church, in Baxter Springs, he enjoyed taking church members on trips throughout the area in his van. Oh, the stories he would tell about those wonderful trips!

As the saying goes, Howard never met a stranger, and if he did, they weren’t strangers for long. Howard had a contagious smile and a passion for life. He loved talking about the Bible, his family, fishing, and stories about working on big truck tires. He was known for his love of music, he especially loved playing music with his brothers. Howard played the harmonica with grace right up to the end. He adopted several feral cats, including one he named Spooky that brought him much delight. He enjoyed fishing at the pits, Baxter Dam, or anywhere he could stop to cast a line.

Howard was preceded in death by his Wives, (Vera) Fay Vaughan in 1990, and his second wife, Imogene Craig in 2005; his Daughter Linda (Smith) in 2000; his Brothers Raymond, Virgil, Alvin, and Glenn, his Sister Kathryn (Breneman); and his Great-Grandson Cassidy Baker in 2014.

Survivors include his Daughters Wanda (Calvin) Baker, Sunnyvale CA; Pauline (Thomas) Pfeiffer Overland Park, KS; Granddaughters Patricia Baker, Los Gatos, CA; Cherie Lamica, Greeley, CO; Royce (Richard) Kmiec, Farlington, KS; and Grandson Derek Pfeiffer, Overland Park, KS, and 8 Great-Grandchildren; His sisters Esther Bowers, Neosho, MO; Vernon (Karen) Wammack, Riverton, KS; Susie (Donnie) Leas, Galena, KS; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Howard will be at rest in Oak Hill Cemetery, in Galena, KS. Memorial Services will be held March 31, 2017,
