Larry Gates

Larry Dean Gates, 62, of Erie, died at 3:16 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2018 at his home. Death followed a brief illness. He had been employed as Director of Utilities for the City of Chanute since 2001.

He was born September 28, 1955, in Medicine Lodge, to Lawrence E. and Marie A. (Chartier) Gates. He grew up in Sharon, where he graduated from high school and later received a vocational education degree as an electrician.

Larry worked as an electrical contractor in the oil fields, worked for the City of Attica and in 1991 became the City Superintendent for the City of Erie.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Erie, the Sons of the American Legion, was a patriot guard rider and honor flight participant. He loved motorcycles.

On September 13, 1991 he and Marcketta R. Piersall were married at Anthony. She survives of the home in Erie. Other survivors include two sons, Josh (Jamie) Piersall and Jerimy (Emily) Piersall, two daughters, Jennifer (Heath) Harding, all of Erie and Lindsay (Cody) Ritter, of Rogersville, MO; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Dan (Jeanette) Gates and Alan (Kathy) Gates, of Wichita and a sister, Vonda Amundson, of Anthony. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelli Gates, and his parents.

Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, at the First Christian Church of Erie, with Rev. Michael Haggard officiating. The Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Erie is in charge of arrangements. There are no planned visitation times. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Legion Post # 170 of Chanute for the Honor Flight Fund.
