Kurt Tateishi

Kurt Mamoru Tateishi, 57, of Pittsburg, passed away Friday January 4, 2019, at his residence.

He was born February 14, 1961,at Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of Masao and Tomiko (Fujisaki) Tateishi.

He graduated from J. B. Castle High School in Kaneohe, Hawaii. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged.

In April of 1992 he was united in marriage to Doreen Jones. They later divorced. They have one son, Robert.

Kurt worked as a construction foreman. He enjoyed diving, fishing and pottery. One of his favorite times was spent at the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific. First as a patient who suffered a traumatic brain injury due to a work accident. He then returned to the hospital as a volunteer to help start a ceramic program for patients. He was an accomplished potter who had some of his work purchased and displayed by the Louis Vuitton store in Honolulu.

He was a lifelong resident of Kahaluu, Oahu until 2015 when he relocated to Pittsburg. Membership was held at Covenant Harvest Church where he was fondly referred to as “Uncle Kurt” by young and old.

He is survived by his son, Robert Tateishi of Pittsburg, KS; a brother Clyde Tateishi and his wife Kathleen of Makawao, Maui; a sister, Lois Dowling and her husband James of Pittsburg, KS. He is also survived by nephews Jason (Hiroko) Tateishi of Kona, Hawaii, Jeffrey Tateishi of Maui, Christian Dowling of Pittsburg. Nieces Julie (Harvey) Bucaneg and Kimberly Dowling of Pittsburg.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, father and mother.



Family visitation will be held at 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on January 12, 2019 at the Covenant Harvest Church. A memorial service will follow at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Jay Lotterer officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Nuuanu Memorial Park, Honolulu, HI. The family suggests memorials be made to the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific.
