Bobby Cypert

Bobby Ray Cypert passed away at the age of 84, Tuesday, June 23, 2020. 

Bobby was born January 19, 1936 in Prue, OK to Fred Newton and Ethel Mae (Joice) Cypert. He was raised in Broken Arrow, OK, but lived the last forty-five years split between Columbus, KS and the family lake house in Yonkers, OK.

Bobby graduated from Broken Arrow High School with the class of 1955, He received All- Conference in three sports and was highly sought by colleges, but due to an injury his athletic career was cut short.

He was also a member of the Naval Reserve during high school and his first two years at Northeastern State University where he decided to attend school to become a teacher and coach. After two years he was drafted into the US Army where he served in Germany as a Radio Teletype Operator working with the Air Force. He was awarded a Code of Conduct Medal during his service. At the end of his service in the Army, he returned to NSU to complete his education. 








He then taught and coached in Paradise, KS, Preston, KS, and Collinsville, OK. After receiving a Masters Degree in counseling he became a school counselor in Howard, KS. He then finished his career as an educator in Columbus, KS as an assistant principal at the high school for 23 years.

He spent his life working with students because he loved kids! He gave 37 years of his life to students. He thoroughly enjoyed his time in Columbus where he found a great home for his family, awesome school district, and lots of friends. When he retired he said he wanted to be remembered as “the sweet guy that I am”.

After Retirement in 1998, Bobby spent most of his time in Oklahoma fishing, hunting, and traveling with is family.

Bobby was a member of the NRA, Broken Arrow High School Alumni Association, Northeastern State University Alumni Association, Masonic Hope Lodge #155 in Howard, KS, the Methodist Church, and was inducted in the Broken Arrow High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

Bobby married his high school sweetheart, Susanne (Sudie) Sherrell, December 27, 1958 in Broken Arrow, OK. She survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Kevin Cypert and wife Maria, Mounds, OK, one daughter, Karla Cypert, Miami, OK, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one very special family friend, his partner in crime, Meghann Hill, Miami, OK.

Due to COVID-19, the visitation will be a drive through on Sunday, July 5, 2020 from 1 to 3 PM. Please drive down Titan Alley and share your favorite memory of Bobby Cypert with his family.

Graveside services will be at Haner-Adair Cemetery, Murphy, OK - Date Pending.

Dave Garard

David Eugene Garard, 74, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, KS.

Dave was born February 8, 1946 in Pittsburg, KS, the only son of Ronald and Eathel (Parsons) Garard. He attended school in McCune, KS, where he lived for 26 years. He served 6 years in the Army National Guard of Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration in 1972. He married Diana (Allen) Garard on May 5, 1972. They lived in Liberty, MO for 12 years before moving to Erie, KS in 1986.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #27, Fort Scott Consistory Scottish Rite, Mirza Shrine Temple of Pittsburg, and George F. Hendricks American Legion Post 102, where he served as the Post Commander for 4 years and was the Financial Officer for 16 years. He was active in Bean Town Boosters, and a member of the Erie Federated Church. During retirement, he drove patients to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis. 








He worked for Western Insurance (later called American States Insurance) for 27 years. After retiring, he owned Dave’s Hideaway Bar & Grill, sold real estate for Finley & Maloney and drove a school bus for CUSD #101. He did taxes from 1986 until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Diana, of the home in Erie; a daughter, Dana, her husband, Ryan Thompson, and their daughter, Ryanna, of Pittsburg, KS; a son, Dustin Garard, of Tulsa, OK; and an abundance of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends are invited to Carson-Wall Funeral Home on Thursday, July 2, 2020 from 6 pm - 8 pm for a visitation. Larry Coppock

The world lost an old soul too soon; Larry Wayne Coppock, 34, of Parsons, died at 9:47 A.M., Thursday, June 18, 2020 in the emergency room at Labette Health.

He was born December 17, 1985 at Parsons, a son of Larry Ray and Donna Faye (Steeby) Coppock. During Larry’s childhood he lived throughout southeast Kansas where he made many friends throughout the area. He finished school and graduated from the Parsons High School in 2004. 

After high school he did some traveling and ended up finding his way to Grove, OK where he worked with Grove Public Schools in Oklahoma as a building engineer for several years. He was also known to pick up a roadie gig at times, especially if it was for some rock. Larry eventually found his way back closer to his roots and moved back to Parsons. 

In 2008 he became a proud father of Kristoffer. Larry could be found hanging out with his two beloved dogs at home or you could find him at a nearby fishing hole around the area. When he wanted to relax you could find him watching a comedy, cooking up some good food, spending his time with family or listening to music while working with his hands. 








Survivors include: one son – Kristoffer Coppock, of Parsons, KS; his mother –Donna Faye Steeby, of Columbus, KS; one sister – Heather Steeby, of Independence, KS; one half-brother – Mark Coppock, of Pittsburg, KS. He was preceded in death by his father; a grandmother, Linda West; and an uncle Daniel Paul West.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 26, 2020 at the North Edna Cemetery with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Patricia Moore

Patricia A. Moore, 80, of Girard, died at 10:14 a.m., Monday, June 22, 2020 in Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. 

Patricia was born January 10, 1940 at rural McCune, Kansas, a daughter of Lester W. “Dutch” and Dorothy C. (McClelland) Ewan. She grew up at rural McCune and attended McCune Schools. 

Patricia married Jimmy D. Moore on January 5, 1959 in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Jimmy preceded her in death on August 27, 2017. 

Patricia and Jimmy lived in various cities as Jimmy worked in the construction industry. They moved to Girard in 1965 and Patricia worked for several years in the school cafeteria in Girard. 

Patricia enjoyed her family, her church, gardening, and visiting with people. 

Patricia was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church at rural Girard. 








Survivors are her sons, Rick A. Moore, and his wife, Cheryle, of Pittsburg and Bruce Moore, and his wife, Kim, of Clermont, Florida; her daughter, Velina Hawkins of Girard; her grandchildren Abby Osborn, and her husband, Ike, Jill Wubbena, and her husband, Korey, Brie Rakestraw, and her husband, Cody, Tarah Cuppett, and her husband, Thomas, Shelby Taylor, and her husband, Brandon; her great-grandchildren Wyatt Osborn, Walker Osborn, Kinley Cuppett, and Bristol Cuppett, Kennedy Wubbena, Parker Wubbena; her sisters, Francis Payton of Fairland, Oklahoma, Wanda Madl of Pittsburg, Mary Ellen Greese of Fairland, and Marilyn Willis of Omaha, Nebraska; her brothers, Jim Ewan of Parsons, Kansas, Richard Ewan of McCune, Bill Ewan of Diamond, Missouri, Merle Ewan of St. Paul, Kansas.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Ray, Charles, and Leroy “Bud” Ewan; an infant brother, Donald Ewan. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Dustin Ledford officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday.

Shirley Allison

Shirley K. Allison, 86, of Oswego, died June 19, 2020 at 12:30 am at Elm Haven East, Parsons Ks.

She was born June 9, 1934, in Oswego KS to Clifton E. and Opal V. (Shearhart) Dains. She was raised in Oswego and attended schools there, graduating in 1952.

She married Robert D. Allison Jr. in June 1952. They later divorced.

She was a member of the Oswego First United Methodist Church, where she held several offices through the years.

She worked for Deming Investment Co., Glenn Berry Mfg., Labette County Treasurer Office, Hoskins Chevrolet, Chimes Inc. and Labette County Conservation Camp. She enjoyed being with her family, friends, reading and crocheting.

James Magan

James L. Magan, 69 of Pittsburg, KS, formerly of Dodge City, KS died at 6:07pm Thursday, June 18, 2020 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg following a sudden illness. 

He was born July 3, 1950 in Michigan City, IN, the son of Howard Wood Magan, Sr. and Annabelle Marie (Gohn) Magan. 

On April 16, 1977 he was united in marriage to Jeannie Herman; she survives him of the home. 

James was an Army Veteran, serving in the Vietnam War and earning several decorations during his service. He was honorably discharged in December 1975. 

He worked as an inventory supervisor for Pepsi Cola Bottling, Excel Corporation, and National Beef, all of Dodge City, KS. After moving to Pittsburg, he worked at NPC and the YMCA before retiring. During his retirement, he could often be found with his metal detector, spending time with his family, or at his granddaughters' softball games and dance recitals. 








Additional survivors include a daughter, Amanda (Dustin) Boyce of Frontenac, KS, a son, Dwayne (Mackenzie) Magan of Olathe, KS; four siblings: Evelyn Castellanos of Bell, CA, Phyllis Sue Kelly of South Bend, IN, Howard Magan, Jr. of Pueblo, CO and Charles Magan of Whittier, CA, and their spouses, along with three grandchildren, Caitlyn and Claire Boyce and Makenna Magan. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.
 
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am Wednesday June 24, 2020 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac with Fr. PJ Voegeli as celebrant. Parish rosary will be recited at 7:30pm, Tuesday evening at the church where family will receive friends following the rosary. Memorials may be made to Friends in Service of Heroes. Kevin Stancer

Kevin Earl Stancer, age 71, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 15, 2020, at his home. He was born January 2, 1949, in Centralia, Washington, the son of Earl E. Stancer and Lorest P. LaBrue Stancer. 

Kevin graduated from the Ft. Scott High School. He later served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He later transferred to the Kansas Army National Guard 1st/127th FA Unit based out of Pleasanton, Kansas where he served as Staff Sargent for Communications. 

Kevin married Carolyn Jean Cash on August 24, 1974, in Ft. Scott. 








Kevin worked for several years doing highway maintenance for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He was a faithful member of the Community of Christ Church. A special thank you is extended to all the healthcare workers, family and friends who have helped with Kevin’s care over the years.

Survivors include his son, Terry Tarter, of Ft. Scott. Kevin’s wife, Carolyn, preceded him in death on May 27, 2020. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Robert Clark will conduct a private graveside service on Friday, June 19th at the U. S. National Cemetery. James Hill

James Otis Hill, age 80, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Medicalodge of Ft. Scott. He was born January 23, 1940, in Ft. Scott, the son of Drexel and Ruth Roy Hill. 

From youth, he enjoyed playing games with the neighborhood kids and working on anything with a motor. He attended Ft. Scott public schools then Wichita electronic school. He worked as a machinist in the U. S. Army while stationed in France. Through the years he worked at MO-KAN Drive-In, Ft. Cablevision, Fox Theatre, and various other Ft. Scott businesses. 

He loved animals, kids, seeing God’s country by car and with friends on many motorcycle trips. He also loved taking pictures. James never met a stranger and loved to visit. 








James lived his entire life in Ft. Scott, being blessed to live at Medicalodge his last three years. Thank you to Lynette Emmerson and the entire Medicalodge family for helping James feel at home.

Survivors include many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte, and his parents.

Graveside services will take place at 2:00 PM Monday, June 22nd, in the Barnesville Cemetery. Yvette Nelson

Yvette Nelson, age 89, was born May 13, 1931, to the late Albert P. and Bonnie Dale Wilson and went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 13, 2020, at West Ridge Assisted Living.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bro. Gene Nelson; and brother, Albert “Sonny” Wilson.

She married Gene Nelson on March 20, 1951, in Arkansas. She worked for the Western Insurance Company and served alongside her husband as a pastor’s wife at Bethel Community Church and then Xenia Baptist Church for 27 years. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, faithful friend, and godly mentor who made a difference in every life she touched. 








Survivors include three children, Richette Shireman and husband, Doug, Walnut, KS, Sandy Haas and husband, Ron, Birmingham, AL, and Rod Nelson and wife, Bev, Fort Scott, KS; 10 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, with one on the way, and sisters, Bonita Holman and Anita Davis

Pastor Thad Endicott will conduct graveside services at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 17 at the Uniontown Cemetery. Pete Piotrowski

Robert Paul “Pete” Piotrowski, age 89, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2020, at the Country Place Senior Living Facility in Ft. Scott, Kansas. He was born August 8, 1930, in Ft. Scott, the son of George Francis Piotrowski and Margaret Chambers Piotrowski. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School where he was taught by the nuns. He went on to Ft. Scott High School.

It was here that one of his high school coaches decided “Piotrowski” was just too long of a name to yell and he was given the nickname “Pete”. He graduated from Ft. Scott High School with the Class of 1948. He joined the Army Reserve out of high school. Pete graduated from Ft. Scott Junior College in 1950. He received a teaching certificate and went on to teach at Hard Pan country school. In 1953, he was called into active duty, and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1955. 

Following his service with the military, Pete married Lula Mae Groner on June 6, 1959, at St. Paul, Kansas. Pete’s father, George, started the family business just before Pete joined the military. While overseas, Pete would send his paychecks home to help with the investment known as Sunflower Supply. Sunflower was a successful wholesale tobacco and candy company that was home to the Piotrowski family for over forty-five years. 








In the 70’s, while still working the family business, Pete decided to take on a full-time rural mail carrier position. He hauled the mail for over thirty years. He was the mailman that always carried gum with him, kids on the route quickly learned this and would always meet him at the mailbox. 

After retiring from hauling mail and selling the family business, Pete enjoyed his farm outside of town. He had a garden, fruit trees, some ponds for fishing and a place for all his family to hang out and call home. Pete and Lou turned into Wendy’s Restaurant and Donut Shop regulars where they would meet their good friends for many years. Pete and Lou were active members of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteered regularly. Pete and Lou shared their Catholic faith with their family, and they loved to hear the St. Mary’s Children’s Choir sing at the masses.

Survivors include his three children, Patricia Lou West and husband, Terry, Robert Jason Piotrowski and wife, Julie and Mary Paula Younggren and husband, Mike, all of Ft. Scott; seven grandchildren, Chrystal West Cowan (Josh), Ashlee Piotrowski Ludwig (Taylor), Gregory Piotrowski, Kayla West Collins (JD), Heather Rickerson Chavis (Josh), Emilee Piotrowski (Zach), and Casey Rickerson Proctor (Travis); and twelve great-grandchildren, Emmah Ludwig, Raylee Cowan, Eli Ludwig, Laramee James, Jace Cowan, Cheyann Collins, Caroline Proctor, Hayes Collins, Jackson Proctor, Kaislee Brittain, Theodore Chavis, and Rother Collins with one more great-grandson on the way. 

Pete’s wife, Lou, preceded him in death on January 22, 2018. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bernard Francis Piotrowski, and a half-brother, George Alan Pirie.

Father Yancey Burgess will conduct the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, June 18th at the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. Wednesday evening at the Church. Visitation will follow from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Church.

Dana Sailsbury

Dana Jo Sailsbury, 78, longtime Parsons resident, died at 9:40 P.M., Friday, June 12, 2020 at her home with her family by her side.

She was born September 10, 1941 at Sewickley, PA, a daughter of Robert and Marguerite (Merman) Queen. At an early age her family moved to Parsons, where she attended school. She graduated from the Parsons High School with the Class of 1959 and then attended the Parsons Junior College, graduating in 1961. Then worked as a Physical Therapist Assistant at the Labette County Medical Center from 1973 until retiring in 1997.

On June 29, 1961 she was united in marriage to Dean Sailsbury. They later divorced.

She was a member of the Westside Christian Church. During retirement she volunteered as a concierge and Pink Lady at Labette health. She also served on the Southeast Kansas Pink Ladies Association board of directors and served as President. She was also active with the Parsons Senior Center and was a hostess there. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, playing cards and fishing. 








Survivors include: two sons – Ron Sailsbury, and his fiancĂ©e, Katrina Fausset, Rural Parsons, KS, Lonnie Sailsbury, and his wife, Anita, Parsons, KS; one daughter – Peggy Tillman, and her husband, Andy, Asbury, MO; one granddaughter – Miranda Perez, Parsons, KS; her beloved pet dog – Cowboy; one sister – Cindy Spriggs, and her husband, Steve, Rural Parsons, KS.

She was preceded in death by one brother – Bob Queen, Jr. and one sister – Susan Queen.

Following cremation, private graveside services will be held at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Ellis Beth

Ellis Lee Beth, age 95, resident of rural Ft. Scott, KS, died June 10, 2020, at his home. He was born February 21, 1925, in Ft. Scott, the son of Clifton and Edna White Beth. He graduated from Fulton Kansas High School in 1943. 

He lived his entire life as a farmer in the West Liberty community. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age. He loved fishing, golfing, bowling, square dancing, sports, and spending time with family. He was always willing to offer a helping hand. 

He married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Costin, on November 12, 1944. They celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2019. 








Survivors include his wife Catherine of the home; two daughters, Marilyn Sipe and husband John, and Marsha Bell and husband Doug; a sister, Carol Jean Smith; a brother, Albert Beth and wife Jan; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Beth; grandchildren, Shana and Mike Emerson, Clifton and Whitney Beth, Beth Ann and Casey Alexander, Catherine Bell and Nick Sterner, and Elizabeth and Ray Berrens; and great grandchildren, Cali, Nick and Austin Emerson, Ella and Carter Beth, Isaac and Eli Alexander, Bryn and Claire Sterner, and Kiya Berrens. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cathy Lee, a son, Darrel Beth; and a brother Merle Dean Beth.

There was cremation. Private family burial with take place at a later date in the West Liberty Cemetery. Charles Clark

Charles Lee Clark, age 83, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2020, at his home in Ft. Scott. He was born June 22, 1936, in Ft. Scott, the son of Guy Clark and Minnie May Majors Clark. 

Charles graduated from the Hume High School. He married Nina L. Orear on May 17, 1955, at the family farm near Foster, Missouri. Charles served with the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958 where he was stationed in Germany. 

Following his military service, Charles was employed by the Johnson County Water Department. He later owned and operated his own dairy east of Hammond, Kansas, for many years. 








After retiring from the dairy business in the mid-1980’s, Charles began working for the Ft. Scott Water Department and later for the Bourbon County Landfill. Charles enjoyed spending time outdoors and looking after his horse. He was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his son, Anthony Clark and wife, Linda, of Lebanon, Missouri and his daughter, Lozana Zimmerman, of Pittsburg, Kansas. 

His wife, Nina, preceded him in death on November 8, 2010. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, John Zimmerman and three brothers, Joe, Kenneth and Gene Clark. 

There was cremation. Private burial will take place at a later date in the U. S. National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the West Liberty United Methodist Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Saundra Carson

Saundra Kay Carson, age 73, passed away at 3:42 pm, Thursday, June 4, 2020 at her home following an illness.

Saundra was born October 11, 1946 in Columbus, KS. Her parents were Homer and Thelma (Ivy) Bristow. She was raised in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School with the Class of 1964.

She was married to Nelson Leroy Carson. Her husband was in the military. For that reason, she moved with him where ever he was stationed throughout his career. Upon his retirement, she returned to Columbus. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Columbus, KS. She enjoyed playing Bingo, going to casinos, and watching game shows on her television. 








Surviving are two daughters, Robin (Dave) Cobb and Mellissa (Scott) Nicoson, all of Columbus; her mother, Thelma Bristow, Columbus; two sisters, Brenda Gail Bunny, Lowell, KS, and Karen Legrasso, Columbus; 5 grandchildren, Brian Tibbs, Casey Carson, Tamra Nicoson, Zachery Nicoson, and Carson, Cobb; and 4 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her father, one son, Jeffrey Michael Carson, one brother, Homer Dale Bristow, and one sister, Phyllis Frazier.

Saundra was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus KS for cremation. The family will schedule a memorial service at a later date.

Chris Dixon

Christopher Scott "Chris" Dixon, age 63, of Galena, Kansas, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, June 7, 2020, at home.

Chris was born June 30, 1956, in Whittier, California, to Raymond Charles and Alice Marlene (Scott) Dixon. He moved to the family farm north of Riverton, Kansas, when he was two years old. From that point, he lived in the Riverton area his entire life. He attended Riverton schools and graduated from Riverton High School in 1974.

On March 6, 1981, he was united in marriage to Robin Johnson at Bethel Community Church, Baxter Springs, Kansas. To this union, two children were born, Caleb and Chelsey.

Chris was a fifth-generation farmer on the land homesteaded by his family in the late 1860s. Farming was his passion and all he ever wanted to do. He worked in construction and was a member of Carpenter's Union Local # 311. He also served a term on the Cherokee County Commission in the early 1990s. 

Chris was a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and was active at Trinity Worship Center in Baxter Springs, Kansas. 








In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife Robin, of the home; one son, Caleb (Niki) Dixon of Pittsfield, Illinois; one daughter, Chelsey (Jeremy) Beck of Riverton, Kansas; one sister, Beth Uhler of Wichita, Kansas; one brother, Greg (Lorrie) Dixon of Cameron, Missouri; six grandchildren, Rimingtyn, Kamdyn, Bradyn, and Charlestyn Dixon, and Josiah and Olivia Beck; several nieces and nephews.

A public memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2020, at 10 am on the family farm, one mile west of Hwy 69/400 on Clem Road, one-quarter mile south on SE 60th St.

Dakota Puffinbarger

Dakota Scott Puffinbarger, 17, of Pittsburg, formerly Girard, died Monday, June 8, 2020 at his residence. 

Dakota was born May 5, 2003 in Pittsburg, a son of Chris and Amy (Stephenson) Puffinbarger. He grew up in Girard and attended Girard schools before moving to Pittsburg where he was attending Pittsburg High School. 

Dakota was active in sports, playing defensive end and tackle in football, throwing shot put and discus in track, baseball and basketball. 

Dakota was in Welding program through the C-Tech program at PSU and planned to enter the Automotive Technology program. 

Dakota enjoyed his family, fishing, and playing X-Box. 








Survivors are his parents, Chris and Janice (Puckett) Puffinbarger of Pittsburg and Amy Stephenson of Frontenac; siblings Shyanne Puffinbarger, Dominik Lopez, Cruz Lopez, Carson Puffinbarger, Connor Puffinbarger, all of Pittsburg; paternal grandmother Kathie Puffinbarger, of Girard; maternal grandmother Beth Kissner of Pittsburg; maternal grandfather, Bill Stephenson of Frontenac; uncles and aunts, Aaron Puffinbarger and Kaisha of Quapaw, Oklahoma, Michael Puckett, and his friend, Michelle Gates, of Girard, Sarah Carson and Alex of Kansas City, Missouri, Tressie Gates and John of Frontenac and Jenny Stephenson of Frontenac; stepgrandmothers Susan CarMickle, and Billy, of Girard and Joyce Scroggins of Pittsburg; numerous cousins. 

Dakota was preceded in death by his grandfather, Alan Puffinbarger, on September 1, 2016, and his stepgrandfather, Ronald Puckett, on August 6, 2002. 

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 2020 at St. Michael Church Hall in Girard with Elder Vivian Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday.

Harriette White

Harriette E. White, 89, lifelong Parsonian, died at 10:15 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at the home of her son, Robert White, in Jacksonville, Arkansas. She had been in Jacksonville the past four years.

She was born in Parsons on May 27, 1931 to Jefferson Moore Parks and Mary Jane (McClanahan) Parks. She graduated from Parsons High School in 1950.

On August 14, 1949 she and Robert R. White were married in Parsons. They lived for three years in Huntington, California before returning to Parsons. Robert preceded her in death on October 13, 1974.

Harriette was employed in the dietary department at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center many years until her retirement. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting and doing word search books every day. In past years she loved to square dance.







Surviving are two children, Robert R. “Bob” White, Jr., of Jacksonville, Arkansas and Loretta Holsinger, of Parsons; grandchildren, Rick Holsinger, Brian White, Kimberly White Johnson, Amy White Buterbaugh, Amanda White and Christopher White; 8 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; sister, Mary Jane Parks of Kansas City, KS and sister-in-law Joann Parks of Parsons.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, son Jeffrey White, daughter Phyllis White, grandson Sam Holsinger, son-in-law Mike Holsinger, daughter-in-law Mary Kathryn White and brothers James Moore Parks, Robert Parks and Jimmy Parks.

The graveside funeral will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 16 at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday.

Larry Tinsley

Lawrence K. (Larry) Tinsley, 63, of Fort Scott, passed away Monday morning, June 8, 2020, at his home. He was born on June 9, 1956, in Overland Park, KS the son of Lawrence O. and Jacqueline (Day) Tinsley. He grew up in the Overland Park and Paola, KS area and attended schools there.

He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War era from 1973 to 1975 and a member of the American Legion. He graduated from Pittsburg State University (Welding) in 1982. He enjoyed living life, bowling, reading, gardening, watching TV, and fishing. Known to his family as Larry, LT, and Papa Larry/LT. Most of all he loved his family and enjoyed calling, texting, and visiting with them when well. He lived his life loving and was loved.








 

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary of the home, a brother: Mark and wife Cindy Tinsley of Paola, Kansas, a son, Michael and wife, Kayla Tinsley of Fort Scott and a daughter, Raechelle Tinsley of Rancho Cucamonga, California, grandchildren, Maggie, Kailen, Tesla, and Deacon, his aunt Charlotte and husband, Gary Earley, brothers/sisters In-Law: Vincent (Evelyn) Morales, Virginia (Tom) Moody, Christopher (Estella) Morales, Martha (Dennis) Miller, Abigail (Randy) Berning. As well as, several close loving relatives including aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and large extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by, his grandparents, parents, and brother, Randall James (Randy) Tinsley.

Rev. James Collins, Chaplain of Post #25, American Legion, will conduct Graveside Funeral Services for Lawrence K. Tinsley, 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 12, 2020, at the Fort Scott National Cemetery with the American Legion and the V.F.W. Post #1165 coordinating the Military Honors. Attendance will be limited and social distancing rules still apply. Masks are required and are not supplied by the cemetery.

LaDoris Brown

On Sunday, May 31st, 2020, LaDoris Ann Francis Brown, mother of two children died at age 79. She was born March 22nd, 1941 in Pittsburg, Ks, to Albert Jesse & Leona Mae (Covell) Francis. She graduated from Pittsburg High School class of 1959.

Her first marriage produced two sons, Jeff and Mike Murphy. Her second marriage produced no children and ended with the death of Jim Brown in 2016. LaDoris appreciated nature & had a passion for painting. Her works were gifts to family and friends. 








In addition to her late husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Jeff Murphy. 

She is survived by son Mike Murphy and grandson Mikey, granddaughters Megan Murphy, Heather Murphy Burns, and great-grandchildren, Grayson and Parker Burns, siblings, Herb Francis & wife Judy, Steve Francis and wife Paula, Nancy Beasley and husband Larry. 

Bath-Naylor will handle arrangements, no services are planned. Interment will be in Edgemand Cemetery, Columbus, Ks.

Gene Good

Hugh “Gene” Good, 83, of rural Oswego, formerly of rural Parsons, died at 7:20 p.m., Sunday, June 7, 2020 at the Chetopa Manor at Chetopa.

He was born November 20, 1936, at Rural Oswego, a son of Walter Hugh and Lucy Irene (Nading) Good. He started school at the former Service School at Strauss. The family moved to the Bender Mound area west of Dennis where he attended school through the eighth grade. He attended Labette County Community High School at Altamont, graduating in 1954.

Gene and Joann Shepard were married May 27, 1955 at the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in Parsons. She survives of the home.

He was employed at Crane Sheet Metal Co. from 1955 to 1985 and from 1985 to 1994 he raised cattle. In 1994 he began working for Orscheln Farm and Home, retiring in 2007.

Gene and Jo have been faithful members of First Baptist Church in Parsons for many years and Gene had served on the Trustees Committee. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, attending family reunions and spending time with his children and grandchildren.








Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Jo; two daughters, Terri Hellwig (Mark) of Oswego, and Sandra Good of Prospect Park, PA; two grandchildren, Amy Ford (Bryan) and Craig Hellwig (Jessi); five great-grandchildren, Brynlee, Kruz and Kasen Hellwig and Milo and Maverick Ford; five sisters-in-law, Barbara Gofourth of Parsons, Kay Good, Chanute, Pat DeMott of Bernice, OK, Joy Blackburn, of Dennis and Doris Shepard of Wichita, KS.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Hugh and Lucy Good, a son, Billy Good, a sister, Shirley DeMott and two brothers, Kenneth Good and Steve Good.

Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at the First Baptist Church, with Pastor Travis Ball officiating. Burial will be later at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday. Friends may also sign the register at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Sylvia Myers

Sylvia M. Myers, 86, of Parsons, died at 3:45 a.m., Thursday, June 4, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

She was born January 11, 1934, at Bluejacket, OK, to Walter E. and Lela M. (Marang) Tunstall. The family moved to Parsons when she was a small child and they also lived in Colorado. She attended Labette County Community High School and moved to Fairfield, CA. Other places she lived were Touelle, UT, Vancouver, WA, and Battleground, WA before returning to Parsons in 1972.

During her adult years Sylvia had worked as a store clerk, a nurse aide at a V.A. Hospital in Vancouver, WA and at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, yard work and repurposing furniture. Spending time with her family was important to her and watching interesting cloud formations fascinated her. She also enjoyed gambling. In earlier years, while living in California, she participated in bowling leagues. During her teen years she was baptized in a church in Coffeyville.

On April 25, 1953 she and Robert Maynard Myers were married in Oswego. He preceded here in death on August 30, 1994.








Survivors are a daughter, Rhonda L. Myers of Parsons; three sons, John Cecil Marlnee of Leon, Howard Huff of Ohio and Ron Myers of the home in Parsons; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a brother Harold Tunstall of Illinois and three sisters, Margaret Tunstall West of Tulsa, OK, Erma Tunstall Falkner of Arizona and Helen Tunstall Gaughan of California. She was preceded in death by a daughter Trudy Sillars and three sons Dan Myers, Robert Myers and Roger Myers; three brothers, two sisters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m., Monday, July 20 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Vernon Norris officiating. Friends are invited to sign the register at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Jerry Allen

Geraldine (Jerry) Ann Jarrett Allen

On Saturday May 23, 2020, at 85 years of age, Geraldine passed away after a short illness.

Jerry was born on June 9, 1934 in Melrose, Kansas to Oma and Lloyd Jarrett. She lived in Melrose, Kansas throughout her childhood and was raised by her beloved Grandparents Anna and George Jarrett after the tragic and early deaths of her parents. Jerry had fond memories growing up in Melrose and helping her Grandparents with the filling station and store. Her favorite part about working at the store was helping herself to all the candy and sodas she could without being scolded. Her love of candy continued throughout her life and was passed on to her youngest daughter Renee. She attended grammar school in Melrose and High School in Columbus, Kansas.

Jerry married Bob Hale in Columbus, KS 1949, had two daughters, and subsequently married Lester Allen on March 13, 1960. Since Lester had been a Mason since the 1950s, it was natural that Jerry and Lester joined the order of the Eastern Star once they moved to California. They were both active in Eastern Star through the mid sixties until the early eighties, becoming Worthy Matron and Patron in San Jose, CA prior to their retirement and move to Auburn, CA. Those were some of her happiest memories.








She had quite a career throughout her life becoming one of the fastest keypunch operators in her class and also in the state of California. She had many jobs throughout her career in bookkeeping, payroll and keypunch operator for a trucking company.

She lived in many places including Wichita, Ks; Limestone, Maine; Oklahoma City, OK; Sumpter, SC; San Jose, CA; Auburn, CA; Lodi, CA; and finally in Studio City, CA. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Lester Allen, her brother in- law Galen Allen, and her sister in-law Lillian Childers.

She is survived by, her three children, Randy Allen, Joselyn Spurgeon, husband David, and Renee Cheap, husband Frank, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, her sister Bonnie Gartner and 5 nephews. She is being laid to rest in her family plot in Melrose, KS.

Larry Edson

Larry D. Edson, 84, of Parsons, died at 5:46 a.m., Monday, June 1, 2020 in the emergency room of Labette Health in Parsons.

He was born October 24, 1935 in Farnam, Nebraska to Charles R. and Madeline (Hudson) Edson. He lived in several places in Nebraska during his early years and graduated from high school in Fremont, Nebraska, where he was active in scouting and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He also attended a business school in Fremont. He served in the United States Naval Reserves several years.








Larry started a career with Montgomery Ward Stores in his early adult years and he worked in Iowa and Overland Park before coming to Parsons in 1972 to be manager of the Parsons store. After retirement from Montgomery Ward Co. he worked several years at the Big Brutus tourist site and also operated Back Door Printing for eight years at his home.

He regularly attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, was a member of the Audubon Society and was a licensed radio operator.

He and Mayetta Engquist were married in 1957 at Fremont, Nebraska and later divorced.
On January 31, 1982 he and Regina M. (Richard) Babcock were married at the former First United Methodist Church in Parsons and later renewed their marriage vows at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Surviving is his wife, Regina, of the home; a son, Brian Edson (Violetta) of St. Louis, Missouri; three step-sons, Don Babcock (Judy), Richard Babcock (Sandy) and Ernest Babcock, all of Parsons; two step-daughters, Cathy Swearengin (Roger) of Grove, Oklahoma and Linda Beavers (Art) of Wichita; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; a sister Pat Stafford (Don) of Fremont, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki and a granddaughter Andrea.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, with Fr. Curtis Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Laura Charles

Laura Lea Charles, age 57, passed away at 11:22 am, Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO following an illness.

Laura was born June 7, 1962 in Columbus, KS. Her parents were John A Charles Sr, and June L (Karr) Charles.

As a child, Laura moved with her family from Galena to San Fernando, CA. She earned a BS degree in education after attending San Fernando Mission College and California State North Ridge. She returned to Galena in 1998.








She worked at various jobs, but mainly it was in the data entry field. She was a member of Empire Mission Church, Galena. She enjoyed writing, composing several poems and short stories. She enjoyed genealogy. Her greatest joy was caring for animals of all types.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, John Charles Jr; and her close friend Joey Rodgers.

Surviving is one sister, Julie Ann Hendryx (husband, Melvin), Galena, KS.

Laura was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

Danny Clouse

Danny Clouse was born on February 15, 1958 in San Gabriel, CA. Danny graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, however found his passion working as a case manager for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Danny served in the United States Air Force from 1977-1981. After his service in the Air Force, Danny served in the Armed Forces in the US Air Guard and the Army National Guard.

Danny was united in marriage to Lindsay Harshman on august 24, 1991.

Danny is preceded in death by his parents, Harold Eugene “Sonny” Clouse, Donald Lee LaFalier and mother, Wilma “Dean” LaFalier.
