Vernon Naffziger

Vernon L. Naffziger, 61, of Altamont, died at 1:23 a.m., Friday, November 9, 2018 at his home. He had been ill several months.

He was born December 26, 1956, in Dallas, Texas and was raised in Parsons by his grandparents, Orville Sketers and Dora (Johnston) Sketers. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1974 and attended Independence Community College.

Vernon was employed by the M-K-T Railroad and the Southern Pacific Railroad. Later he worked for A.T.&T. as a fiber optic inspector. In earlier years he was baptized in the Christian Church in Parsons and played baseball and softball. He loved to restore cars, do carpentry projects and ride motorcycles. His last project was restoring a 1970 Harley-Davidson Ultra Glide motorcycle.

On March 9, 1985 he and Tammy Gittins were married in Cherryvale. She survives. Other survivors include a sister, Charlene Naffziger Ware, of Cherryvale; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Betty Gittins, of Altamont; sister-in-law, Joni Wilkerson and husband Brian, of Lawrence; nephews, Robert Seward of St. Louis, MO, Tyler Gittins of Odessa, TX and Jonathan Gittins, of Seattle, WA; a niece Shelly Ward, of Cherryvale. Preceding him in death were his grandparents and a brother-in-law Terry Gittins.

The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday. A private burial will be Monday at Mound Valley Cemetery.
