Myldred Dennett

(From Brenner Mortuary)

Myldred Opal Dennett, 92, of Frontenac, KS, passed away Friday, May, 11, 2018, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg, KS.

She was born June 25, 1925, in Higgins, TX, the daughter of Walter and Pearl (Mitchell) Halbert.

On July 26, 1942, she was united in marriage to R.J. (Junior) Dennett. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2006.

Myldred lived in several states including Texas, Oklahoma, California, Missouri and Kansas. When she was 10 years of age she traveled to California with her entire family of 7 to work in the produce fields. This migration was similar to the story of the Grapes of Wrath during the Dust Bowl Days.

Myldred attended Redden grade school and Arnett high school for a short period of time. She earned her high school diploma at Drexel Mo.

Myldred began her marriage of 64 years to R.J. (Junior) Dennett in Oklahoma, later moving to Drexel Mo. in 1953 to run the family farm where they raised cattle. They remained there until 2002 when they retired from the farm and moved to Frontenac KS.

Myldred was a much more than a mother and a homemaker. She took her role very seriously with extensive sewing, cooking, canning and completing the home for her family along with assisting in the farming operation hand in hand with Junior. She enjoyed doing things with her children and their friends and was the 4-H Sewing Project Leader in Drexel for 20 years.

Myldred always made time to raise the family and take care of everything that needed to be done and somehow found the time to begin a commercial quilting operation which continued for years. She later focused that effort into making quilts for her children and grandchildren every Christmas. She also made quilts for numerous friends for baby showers and gifts. After moving to Frontenac she joined the Little Balkans Quilt Guild. She made numerous quilts for various projects for the needy such as fire victims and Quilts of Valor. If you were a friend of hers you may have a quilt she made for you.

Myldred & Junior raised enough vegetables and fruits to feed the entire neighborhood and were always willing to give to whomever came by to visit.

Myldred & Junior thoroughly enjoyed their winter times of being "Winter Texans" during the cold seasons by relocating to Mission Tx., where they developed many lasting friendships. Her time in Texas was spent enjoying playing the harmonica and singing in their "Jam Sessions". During the summer time a lot of the campground residents from Mission would travel to Drexel Mo. to their farm picnic ground for the annual Oleander Acres summer picnic.

When they moved to Frontenac she became involved in the area VFW and would travel to other meetings. She was always willing to take the "older" people who couldn't drive. She enjoyed attending the Countryside Christian Church in Pittsburg, especially enjoying the music.

Myldred has been a very active member of the Homer Cole Community Center where she absolutely enjoyed her Pinochle card game with good friends.

Myldred will always be remembered for her pies. She has cooked delivered and served too many pies to count to every function you could imagine. She is best known amongst her family for her SPLIT cobbler, to satisfy everyone in the family that wanted Peach AND Blackberry, she found a way to make everyone happy.

She is survived by a daughter, Judith Ann Perry and her husband, Marvin, of Prole, IA; two sons, Gerry Gene Dennett and his wife, Vicki, of Pittsburg, KS, and Travis David Dennett and his wife, Lorri, of Vici, OK; two grandsons, Mike Perry of Norwalk IA and Matt Perry of West Des Moines IA and their wives; 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Wilma Geurin and Eileen Hunter, three brothers, Vernon Halbert, David "Davey" Halbert and infant Lester Halbert, and an infant granddaughter.

A service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at the Countryside Christian Church, with Bryce Hotchkiss officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m., Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials to the Wesley House or Countryside Christian Church. These may be left at or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th Street, Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may also leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
