Fred Orval McClelland, 92, of Girard, died at 7:02 am Thursday, July 19, 2018 at WestRidge Assisted Living in Girard where he lived since September 6, 2017.
He was born February 8, 1926 at rural Girard, the son of Harry and Gertrude (Ware) McClelland. Fred attended Lone Elm and Ozark Rural Grade Schools and the Girard High School.
Fred enjoyed farming until he was called to serve his country, as a Corporal, in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1953.
He married Donna L. Wilkerson on May 7, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Cherokee, Kansas. She survives at WestRidge.
Fred worked for the City of Girard and at the Girard Cemetery from 1955 until retiring in 1979. He owned and operated McClelland and Son Sanitation in Girard, retiring in 1989.
He was a member and one of the founders of the Girard Bible Church in Girard and a member of the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard.
Fred enjoyed his family and his church family, picking up cans, visiting with people, and working.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Donna, are a son, David McClelland, and his wife, Candi, of Girard; his granddaughters, Amy Klaassen, and her husband, Chris, of Omaha, Nebraska and Marla Kraft, and her husband, Jeremy, of Girard; his great-grandchildren, Kaylee Klaassen, Lauryn Klaassen, and Gracyn Kraft; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Fannie Cheney.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, July 21, at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Noah Hartmetz officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with Military Honors.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home in Girard where friends may call after 3:00 p.m., Friday.
