Muriel D. Groves, 81, of Parsons, passed away at 12:48 a.m., Monday, December 17, 2018 surrounded by family in Bartlesville, OK. She had been taken to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa after complications from a recent illness. Her husband, son, grandchildren, sisters and other family members were with her during her week in the hospital. Muriel understood her situation in a poignant conversation with a niece, she made an insightful and kind comment: “I’m happy with the age I’ve reached, but feel bad for others who face a situation like this when much younger.”
She was born August 10, 1937 to Morton M. and Vera B. (Mills) Mills in Roxobel, NC and graduated from Oak City High School at Oak City, NC in 1955. She married George T. Groves in December of 1957 at Oak City. George was from Parsons and they returned to Parsons in 1967. Soon after she began employment in the offices of Dayton Superior, where she worked 35 years until retiring in 2002.
To everyone that knew Muriel, she was a genteel Southern woman, always polite, never quite losing her Southern accent, a hard worker. It was important to her that her home, yard and person were always immaculate to present her family in the best light. She enjoyed her trips back to North Carolina, shopping and dining out most of all. She loved her sons and grandchildren and time spent with them. She was deeply heartbroken when her eldest son, Russell, passed away in 2014.
Muriel is survived by her husband, George, of the home in Parsons; her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Groves of Grove, OK. She was a wonderful grandmother and will be missed by her four grandchildren, Daniel Groves (Tabitha) of Dewey, OK, Amanda Groves Lambert (Brandon) of Hopeton, OK, Aaron Groves (Lacie) of Alva, OK, Karlie Groves, of Minnesota. She was proud to have several great-grandchildren and loved them dearly, Bailey Groves, Noah Groves and Abigal Groves, all of Dewey, OK, and Delaney Lambert and Kaden Lambert, both of Alva, OK. She is survived by two sisters, Becky Sanderlin, of Bear Grass, NC and Mary Rubin, of Canton, GA and a brother, Brooks Mills, of Spring Hope, NC.
She was preceded in death by her son, Russell Groves, a great-granddaughter, Kinsley Lambert; a sister, Anne Averette and three brothers, Morton Franklin Mills, Bradley Matthew Mills and Al Gene Mills and an infant brother, Mursel Mills.
