Jon Sherman, 78, of Pittsburg, passed away peacefully at 4:51 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Via Christi Hospital. He had recently been diagnosed and struggling with a rare blood disease called amyloidosis
Jon was born September 28, 1940, in Pittsburg, KS, to E. D. and Ruth (Jones) Sherman. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1958. After graduating from Kansas State College of Pittsburg (PSU) with a B.S. in Industrial Design in 1963, he moved to California with his wife Eunice Bogatay. They returned to Pittsburg in 1966, and his daughter Jonna Jean was born. He later married Kelly Busick Dennis in 1970. They lived in Pittsburg and Panama City Beach, Florida. He completed his Master’s degree in Psychology at KSCP. He worked as a social worker and was Director at Shields Adult Care Home in Pittsburg. After Kelly passed away, he married Treva Barrow Breeze on September 20, 1997, in Pittsburg, KS. He retired in 2006 as Director of Community Services at SEK-CAP, Inc.
Jon's legendary 60 year musical career began when he was 17, and played drums with Bob Serra's polka band at Barto's Idle Hour. He later played with the Datons, a well known local rhythm and blues band of the late 50's and early 60's. He founded the popular local group IV Five, which he took to southern California. During a three year music tour in Hollywood, CA, he played with several stars in the music industry such as the Righteous Brothers, Sonny and Cher, and the Turtles. Jon returned to Pittsburg and formed The Gass Company, which became a premier local band in the 60's. Jon's most recent local bands included Solid Gold, The Gass Company and Area 51.
Jon was a Christian and recently felt a greater spirituality in his life which he wanted to share with others. He was an avid organic gardener and built a greenhouse for his home grown vegetables.
Jon is survived by his wife Treva; daughter Jonna Templar (Dalton) and grandsons Evan and Will Templar of Overland Park, KS; stepsons Kelly Breeze of Leawood, KS and Bryan Breeze (Jenni) of Pittsburg, KS; brother Jim Sherman (Donna) of Overland Park, KS; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Shirley Strevell.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 18 at the Brenner Mortuary with Chaplain Pete Mayo officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date in the Myers Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to the start of the service.
