Clayton E. Powers, 95, of Pittsburg, passed away at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Medicalodges of Frontenac.
He was born September 12, 1923 on the farm of Peter and Ella (Heiser) Powers in Lincoln County, Kansas. He was the youngest of seven children. His father died in 1929 and his mother died in 1931, both in car accidents. Amanda (Heiser) and her husband, Bryon Borman of Lincoln, became his guardian.
Mr. Powers graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in April 1942, serving two years in the United States and 2 years in England, France and Germany. Sgt. Powers received an honorable discharge in 1945. He then served in the Army Reserve and Kansas National Guard. Sgt. Powers was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star and other medals. Lt. Colonel Powers resigned from the United States Army Reserve in 1982.
Mr. Powers attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas. He received his B.A. and M.S. in School Administration in 1951.
On April 12, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marjorie L. Tucker at Lyons, Kansas.
Mr. Powers spent 19 years in the Hutchinson School District as a teacher and Assistant Principal of Hutchinson High School. They moved to Pittsburg in 1976, where Mr. Powers was Assistant Principal of Pittsburg High School. He retired from USD #250 in 1984.
He then owned and operated a furniture refinishing shop for twenty-three years.
Mr. Powers was a member of the First Christian Church, Marvin Armstrong Masonic Lodge #187, Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post #64 and B.P.O.E.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Powers of the home; three sons, Mark Alan Powers and his wife, Virginia of Council Bluff, Iowa, Nathan Lee Powers of Pittsburg, and Steven Wayne Powers and his wife, Allison of Nashville, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and 3 sisters.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday (Sept. 17), at the Brenner Mortuary, with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. Full Military honors will be provided by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Burial will be in the family lot at the Sylvan Grove City Cemetery in Sylvan Grove, Kansas at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Elks National Foundation. These may be left at or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th Street, Pittsburg, KS 66762. According to his wishes, Mr. Powers has been cremated.
