John Allen Potter, age 80, passed away at 11:15 am Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Freeman West Hospital Joplin, MO following a sudden illness.
Mr. Potter was born December 21, 1936 in Riverton. His parents were John Richard and Mildred Pauline (Kitch) Potter. He was a lifetime resident of Riverton.
He graduated from Riverton High School with the Class of 1954. He continued his studies at Pitt State University, Pittsburg, KS ultimately earning a Master’s Degree in Metal and Wood Working.
He taught woodworking at Galena (KS) High School for 25 years. He was also a self-employed farmer. He was a member of the Lowell Friends Church, Lowell, KS, the Galena Teachers Association, and the Kansas Chapter of the National Education Assn. He served 8 years as a member of the Riverton School Board. He enjoyed being outdoors, cutting firewood, and watching wildlife, especially deer.
Surviving is one son, Alan L Potter (Rodney Hoose), Jenks, OK; one daughter Lisa K Potter-Savage (Jerry), Riverton, KS; his sister, Cheryl Roberts (Bob), Beeville, TX; one granddaughter, Ashley N. Savage, Riverton, KS; 5 nieces and 5 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Evelyn Walters, and one brother, Richard Wayne Potter.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Monday, November 13, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Jeff Adams will officiate. Private burial will follow.
