Annette Brown

Gloria “Annette” Brown, 78, of Oswego, died at 10:25 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

She was born January 8, 1940, on a farm near Sedan, to Earl T. and Ethel (Carpenter) Fuller.

Survivors include a son, Troy S. Brown and wife Mary; granddaughter, Whitney J. Brown; two great-grandchildren, Adrian J. Brown and Blaise P. Brown; siblings, Tim Fuller, Beth McGee, Jim Fuller, Mary Jean Lear, Jeff Fuller and Jan Stiltz. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Earlene Fuller, Terry Fuller and Frank Fuller.

To fulfill her wishes she will be cremated and there will be no service. The family wishes to give a sincere thank you to the staff at Good Sam and Harry Hynes Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Annette.

Ryan Million

Ryan E. Million, 36 of Pittsburg, KS passed away of a sudden illness Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at his home.

He was born May 25, 1982 in Pittsburg the son of Ron and Lynn (Shelton) Million.

Ryan graduated from the Pittsburg High School with the Class of 2000. He then went on to Pittsburg State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in recreation management and a minor in business. 

He was an avid waterfowl hunter and baseball fan, especially the KC Royals.

Survivors include his parents; two sisters: Stephanie Million of Wichita, KS and Stacy (Jason) Han of McCune, KS, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Alfred & Virginia Million and John Shelton & Meredith Becker.

Graveside services will be 10am, Tuesday October 2nd, 2018 at the Highland Park Cemetery where friends are requested to meet at the cemetery for the services. Tom Greenfeather

Tom Greenfeather, 95, of Parsons, passed away at 3 p.m., Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

He was born on October 25, 1922 at Ramona, Oklahoma to Lewis and Luellen (Kerr) Greenfeather. He grew up at Ramona, White Oak, and Big Cabin, Oklahoma and attended schools there.

He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. After he completed basic training at Camp Sibert Alabama, he was assigned to the 187th Chemical Composite Platoon of the Army Service Forces. He served in the European, North African, and China-Burma-India Theaters. He was a life member of the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Parsons.

After he was honorably discharged he worked at the Kansas Ordnance Plant for 6 years. He and his brother-in-law established an auto body shop in Vinita, Oklahoma. They built up the business and Tom sold out and moved back to Parsons. He worked at the Independence Dry Cleaners and then the Sally Ann Bakery before leasing a service station at 2701 Main in 1957. In 1959 he leased a new service station at 16th and Main. He remained there until about 1969. He then owned and operated other businesses in Yukon, Broken Arrow, and Wagoner, Oklahoma until selling those business interests in 1971 and bought the Skelly Service Station at 16th and Broadway in Parsons partnering with Danny Brown. In 1977 he sold his interest to Danny Brown and bought into a partnership with his son, Bill, in the D-X Station at 16th and Main. Gas shortages forced the closure of the 16th and Main station in 1979. He then purchased a freight delivery business and operated it until his retirement at age 62 to pursue a life of fishing.

In retirement he used his business skills to start a woodshop in the building behind his house to finance his “fishing habit”. He made and sold all types of woodcrafts in various antique and craft malls in Parsons and Pittsburg. As with all other businesses he was successful and people sought after his creations. He would often work many hours per day to fill orders from as far away as Kansas City. His crafts were sometimes enhanced by the artistic talents of his wife Joann who did scroll painting on many of his projects.

He was an avid fisherman as well as a talented musician. For over 10 years he has been playing his guitar and singing Gospel music for more than 20 times a month with his son Bill and friends in various churches and several institutions over Southeast Kansas.

Tom was proud of his Native American heritage. He was born Shawnee. The band of “Loyal Shawnee” was adopted by the Cherokee Nation. He was currently a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.

He and Dorothy Mae Colvin were married at Big Cabin, Oklahoma. They later divorced. He then married Virginia Joan Van Cleave at Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

In addition to his loving wife, Tom is survived by his son, Bill Greenfeather, of Parsons; his daughter, Marilyn Murnan, and her husband, Larry of Parsons; four grandchildren, Michelle Hinkle of Ft. Worth, TX, Dale Greenfeather of Oklahoma City, OK, Robert Murnan of Pittsburg, and Coy Murnan of Lansing, KS; six great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; his brother, Ron Greenfeather of Tahlequah , OK; his sisters, Jannetta “Mag” Walls of Parsons and Lois Bates of Coffeyville. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kim Kenworthy; two brothers, Gene Greenfeather and Lewis Alfred Greenfeather and a sister; Louise Watkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Pastors Steve Crawford and Vernon Norris officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 Thursday evening. Hildegard Granneman

Hildegard Wilhelmina (Jagels) Granneman, 98, Girard, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at the Arma Health and Rehabilitation in Arma, Kansas.

Hildegard was born January 23, 1920 near Hepler, Kansas, a daughter of Theodore and Lillie (Mein) Jagels. She received Christian Baptism on February 8, 1920 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Hepler and was confirmed in her Christian faith at Immanuel on April 9, 1933. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School and Hepler Rural High School graduating on May 16, 1939. She continued her education at Central Business College in Kansas City, working at Quartermaster Corps in Kansas City for several years before returning to Hepler and working for the Hepler State Bank for 15 years.

Hildegard married Walter L. Granneman on May 6, 1945 and they farmed near Hepler until his death on May 6, 2003.

Hildegard was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving for many years as a Missionary League officer, teaching Sunday school, planning funeral meals, as youth group sponsor and was active in the Women’s Bible Study group. She was also a member of Gem Seekers Study Club of Hepler.

Survivors include her daughters, Rosalie Atwood of Canton, Georgia, Carol Anderson, and her husband, Bob, of Overland Park, Kansas, and Marla Ulbrich, and her husband, Vernon, of Girard; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Granneman of Baldwin City, Kansas.
Hildegard was preceded in death by her brothers, Alwyn, Otto, and Paul Jagels; a son-in-law, Robert Atwood; two infant granddaughters.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Hepler with Pastor Jay Hobson officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Hepler.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m., Sunday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Sunday.

Nancy Miller

Nancy L. Miller, 81, of Parsons, died Monday, September 24, 2018 at her home.

She was born December 5, 1936 in Cherryvale, a daughter of Everett Cassius and Mildred Fern (Blair) Norton. She was raised in Cherryvale and attended elementary school there until her family moved to Parsons when she was in approximately the fifth grade. She graduated from Parsons High School and attended Parsons Business College.

On October 24, 1954 she was united in marriage to James Walter Miller at the First Baptist Church at Parsons. He survives of the home. They loved each other dearly and would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary next month.

She was first employed as a switchboard operator for the telephone company. From 1965 until 1977 she was the bookkeeper for her husband’s company, Jim Miller Construction. She also worked as the secretary and office manager at the First Presbyterian Church for approximately 25 years, retiring in the early 2000’s.

Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church and had attended First Baptist. She played the piano at the Christian Church. She also sang in the church choir at both churches. In past years she was a member of the Jaycee Jaynes, Job’s Daughters, the Progress Chapter 49, Order of Eastern Star and the American Baptist Women.

She and her beloved husband spent many years at their cabin on the lake at the Katy Rod and Gun Club. She was the secretary of their board. She shared her musical talents singing and playing the piano as part of a weekly live radio spot in her early adulthood. Her interests included being with her family and friends, reading books, playing the piano for her own enjoyment, nursing homes and the Parsons Senior Center. She also enjoyed painting and working on many types of crafts.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one son and daughter in-law – Gary Lee and Jodie Miller, Ozark, MO; two daughters and sons in-law – Pamela Ann and Trent L. Alexander, Ft. Worth, TX, Jeanette and Vince Horton, Parsons, KS; eight Grandchildren – Adrienne Williams, Springfield, MO, Drew L. Alexander, Amarillo, TX, James Miller, and his wife, Julie, West Plains, MO, Vanessa S. Stanfield, and her husband, Devin, London, England, Samuel Miller, and his wife, Kayla, West Plains, MO, Allison Garcia, and her husband, Richard, Weston, FL, Scott Horton, Dallas, TX, Sydney Miller, Ozark, MO; ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 28, 2018 at the First Christian Church with Rev. Laurie Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Ronald Boulware

Ronald E. Boulware, age 94, lifelong Columbus resident, community leader, and retired New York Life Insurance Agent, passed away 2:03 p.m. Thursday September 20, 2018 at his home following an illness.

He was born in rural Cherokee, Kansas February 16, 1924 to Earl J. and Edythe P. (Mosher) Boulware. He enjoyed a long, full life. He married Jeanne L. Bradney, his high school sweetheart, on October 22, 1943 while on furlough during the war. She passed away June 3, 1997. He is survived by Francine Miller, who he married on January 31, 1998. Ron also is survived by his five children: Ronald Dan (Dale) Boulware, St. Joseph, MO; Deborah (Dr. Lynn) O’Neal, Lawrence, KS; Barbara (Scott) McClain, Nevada, MO; Rebecca (John) Johnston, Belleville, IL; and Kim (Cristie) Boulware, Cherokee, KS; four step children: Michele (Robert) Castaneda, Kansas City, MO; April (Comm. Dan) Rader, Mulberry KS; Clint Miller, Charles Town, WV; and Richard (Sunny) Miller, Galena, KS; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; brother, Charles L. Boulware, Albuquerque, NM; sister and brothers-in-law Elizabeth Sanford, Columbus, Ruth Bradney, Pittsburg, KS, Barbara and Glenn Sparks, Fairland, OK, Val and John Ashlock, Talala, OK; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents.

He attended schools in Columbus, was an Eagle Scout, and played basketball at Independence Community College before transferring to the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. WWII intervened and he was inducted into the US Army July 7, 1943 and was assigned to the 1878th Aviation Engineers. He served in the South Pacific in the Ryukyus Islands, Saipan, Okinawa, and the liberation of Korea. He was awarded three combat stars. His military uniform is displayed in the Columbus Museum. He was discharged on January 3, 1946. Upon returning from the service, he started his family which he raised in Columbus. He opened a Goodyear & General Electric store in Columbus, and later combined it with Boulware Hardware on the square with his father. He joined New York Life Ins. Co. in 1958.

He had a distinguished 30 year career with New York Life being a member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a Senior NYLIC serving on the Agents Advisor Council, a member of the Kansas and National Underwriters Assn., serving as President of the Southeast Kansas Life Underwriters and as an advisor to the Kansas Insurance Commissioner.

He was always active civically in serving and promoting Columbus and the surrounding area. He was a director of the community owned Columbus Telephone Company for 48 years, serving as its President and Chair of the Board for 35 years. He was instrumental in bringing cable service to Columbus, one of the first small communities in the state to have that updated service. Upon returning from the war, he became President of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and during his term obtained the city’s modern street lights known as the “white way.” He led the effort to form a new rural high school district serving as the President of the Better Schools Organization. He was a founding member and charter chairman of the Columbus Community Foundation. For years he served as the county chairman on the US Highway 69 Association. As a community leader and in his capacity as President of the telephone company, he was always interested in attracting new business and affording good job opportunities to Columbus residents. Columbus recognized his civic contributions by awarding him the Columbus Chris Award in 2014.

Ron was a long-time active member of the United Methodist Church, serving and chairing many committees over the years including as a Trustee of the Parsons District. He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Mirza Shrine, and the Royal Order of Jesters. Ron just enjoyed life and living it to the fullest. As a KU alumnus who loved basketball, he was an avid KU fan. He enjoyed morning coffee with his friends. He and Fran enjoyed dancing, gardening, trips to visit family, and trips to Branson with the Jesters. Fran was always there, always supportive. He remained active in the Jesters in Pittsburg throughout his retirement. He also had an interest in photography and used that hobby to record many family events. This interest, as well as his interest in promoting Columbus, led him to prepare in 1980 and again in 1990 a slide pictorial which he narrated and presented during community events and business recruitment efforts. The DVD copy is now in the Columbus Museum. He took great pride in Columbus and its people. He “boosted” Columbus at every opportunity.

All his activities aside, Ron’s real interest was his family. He was proud of his family. Referred to affectionately by his grandchildren as “Pop-pop,” he loved time with them and the hugs from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and there were many. He was a great encourager with an avid interest in the activities of all his kids and grandkids. Family reunions were special and for years he hosted the entire family for a four-day gathering near Branson at Indian Point. In his ‘80s, he could still be seen romping on a wave runner on Table Rock Lake. Keeping the family close and together was important to him. He made the effort with each family member to let them know the love and interest he held for them. He wanted them to know they were special to him. And they responded in kind. For dedication and devotion to family, he set the bar high, an example for everyone. God, family, and country were simply a part of who he was. He embraced what many regard as the attributes of the “greatest generation.” His legacy of family commitment and love for one another will always be remembered. He was the epitome of “Father Knows Best.” The family rejoices in his life and the legacy he leaves with them.

The family would like to thank and is grateful to the wonderful caregivers from Compassus Hospice and Home Instead who provided comfort and care for Ron.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held at 11:00am Friday October 19, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Columbus with Pastor Lindsey Clark officiating. Family will receive friends from 9:30-11:00am prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the Columbus Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Columbus United Methodist Church and/or Columbus Community Foundation. Romona Lichlyter

Romona Maye Lichlyter, age 81 of Galena, Kansas went to be with her Lord on Friday September 21, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Ray Lichlyter, as well as one brother and four sisters.

Romona is survived by two daughters, Kathy Williamson and husband, Joe, Jeanne Lichlyter; two sons, Buddy Vern Lichlyter and wife, Cherie, Rick Lichlyter; two sisters, Carolyn LaTurner, Tina Hester; one brother, Ronnie Hester, and numberous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Graveside memorial services will be 1:00 pm Thursday at the Osborne Memorial Cemetery.
