Shirley Munsell

Shirley J. Munsell 83, of Pittsburg, KS passed away 5:10pm Thursday November 30, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Frontenac, KS following an illness. 

Shirley was born February 17, 1934 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of Chester “Lefty” and Gladys Marie (Brown) Pryor. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Pittsburg High School in 1952. 

On October 9, 1954 Shirley married Chesley Munsell at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS; he preceded her in death on May 14, 2015. 

Shirley attended the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg, KS; she was a member of TOPS; loved bingo and her family was the most important thing in her life. 

Survivors include her children Chuck Munsell and wife Karen of Pittsburg, KS, Bev Wright and companion Mike Weinberg of Pittsburg, KS and Monica Hatfield-Blake of Wichita, KS; siblings Connie Phillips of Pittsburg, KS, Mike Pryor of Pittsburg, KS and Janie Collins of Girard, KS; grandchildren Eric Munsell, Mike Munsell, Adrian Murray, Corbin Murray, Haven Hatfield and Bran Dan Hatfield; in addition 12 great-great grandchildren. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Terry Pryor, Chet Pryor and Donna Flater. 

Funeral Services will be 10:00am Monday December 4, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. Family will receive friends from 7-8:00pm Sunday December 3, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; friends may call after 12:00pm Sunday. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home. 

Juanita Milleman

Juanita Pauline Milleman, 94, of Pittsburg, passed away on November 28, 2017. She passed away only 5 days before her 95th birthday.

She was born on December 3, 1922 to Clem and Allie (Tackett) Wilson in Alston, Missouri. Juanita like everyone else born back then, grew up in hard times – the depression years as an early teenager. As she grew up, she made every penny count, trying to make it with very little money.

On June 8th, 1941, she married Ernest Arthur Milleman and they were married for 74 years, before Ernest passed away on October 22, 2015. Together they had one son, Gary Ernest Milleman. Gary resides in Pittsburg. Gary took care of them for several years before health reasons put them in a rest home.

Juanita was one of 10 brothers, one half-brother and three sisters. One sister, remains, Gloria Scholes of Franklin, Kansas.

Juanita was of the Christian faith. Her family always came first. Her passions in life were cooking, her garden and flower beds, and painting some of the most beautiful oil pictures around. Some of her pictures spans from Texas to Alaska with many people here in Pittsburg still having some on their wall.

She also loved animals, especially the nearly 26 years with her son's two Labrador retrievers, Brandi and Bonnie. She also loved to watch her birds, feeding probably 75-100 birds a day.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She always had a smile for everyone she met.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday (November 30) at the Garden of Memories Cemetery with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Friends are requested to meet at the cemetery. Casket bearers will be Fred Andrew, Joe Andrew, Charlie Jameson, and John Black. The family suggests memorials be given to the SEK Humane Society. Pamela Varone

Pamela Jean Fowler Varone, 59, of Arma, Kansas, passed away at 9:03 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017, at her residence. 

She was born November 18, 1958 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Hobert Leroy and Raye (Adams) Fowler. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1976. 

On September 26, 1980, she was united in marriage to Scott Varone at Miami, OK. He survives of the home. Survivors her husband Scott Varone of Arma, KS; two sons, Corey Fowler of Kansas City, MO, and Cody Varone of Pittsburg, KS; two sisters, Patsy Ann Williams of Oklahoma City, OK, Cheryl Yvonne Herr of California; a grandson Cooper Fowler and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ramona Dawn Conover and two brother-in- laws, Charlie Herr and Don Conover.

Linda Day

Linda A. Day, 70 of Pittsburg, KS died at 7:20 pm, Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg following a long illness.

She was born January 24, 1947 in Joplin, MO the daughter of Fred Harlen and Mary Alyce (Martin) Day.

Linda received a Licenced Practical Nursing degree at Crowder College in Neosho, MO immediately following high school graduation and worked at Gravette Hospital for several years.

Linda was an outgoing, happy person who made friends easily. She had many friends who loved her very much. She had a love for cats and had several that were special to her. She also enjoyed growing flowers and plants. She had quite a green thumb. But the joy of her life were her grandchildren and spending time with them.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Pittsburg.

Survivors include a daughter Allyson (German) Abarca of Pittsburg; a son Noah Day of Erie, PA; four grandchildren: Gabriel, Hannah & Katelyn Abarca and Aiden Day.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Max Day.

Graveside services will be on December 3, 2017 at 3:30 pm in the Pineville City Cemetery, Pineville, MO. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com. Karen Benner

Karen E. Benner, 68 of Pittsburg, KS died at 5:30 am Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.

She was born July 25, 1949 in Flemingsburg, KY the daughter of Hildrith Doyle and Marjorie (Porter) Heck.

She was married to Paul E. Benner, Sr. in Georgia; he survives her of the home.

Karen was a nurse working for Mt. Carmel Hospital for 35 years.

Additional survivors include a daughter Bobi O’Neal of Pittsburg, two sons: Paul Benner, Jr. of Girard and Richard Benner of Chanute, KS; three brothers, a grandson Kiel O’Neal and eight other grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Frederick McClure

Frederick Alden McClure, 80, of Pittsburg, passed away at 3:46 a.m. Sunday, November 20, 2017 at his residence. 

He was born August 22, 1937, in Wichita, KS, to Ivan F. McClure and Gertrude G. Kerns McClure. Frederick enlisted in the United States Navy on August 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1959. He was an Oblate at Subiaco Abbey in Subiaco, Arkansas and involved in many other prayer groups at local parishes. Membership was held at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. 

Survivors include a son, Michael McClure and his wife Michelle of Pittsburg, KS; a daughter, Lisa Farris of Parsons, KS, and her friend Pat Duncan of Pittsburg, KS; three brothers, Martin McClure and his wife Dorothy of Plano, TX, Joseph McClure and his wife Brigitte of Elkhorn, NE; Robert McClure and his wife Carol of Huntington Beach, CA; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Louise Harris, and Marlene L. McClure.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Michael Baldwin as Celebrant. . The parish rosary will be prayed at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Private Family Burial will be at the Subiaco Abbey in, Subiaco, AR. Deborah Miller

Deborah Miller 58, of Pittsburg, KS, died at 10:15 pm Friday, November 17, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS.

She was born April 7, 1959 the daughter of Sam and Mary Strawn Smith. She had been a lifelong resident of Pittsburg. She attended St. Mary’s Colgan Schools in Pittsburg.

Deborah was a caregiver working for Southeast Kansas Independent Living in Pittsburg, Kansas for eight years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS.

Survivors include one son Dennis R. Pope of Pittsburg and two daughters Brenda R. Cole of Topeka and Jenny L. Stevens of Pittsburg, her significant other Leroy Miller of Pittsburg, her mother Mary Smith of Pittsburg, seven brothers Sam Smith Jr. of Pittsburg, John Smith of Pittsburg, Robert Smith of Pittsburg, James Smith of Peoria, Illinois, David Smith and his wife Donna of Frontenac, Michael Smith and his wife Krista of Pittsburg and Shawn Smith of Overland Park, KS, one sister Diana Convirs of Pittsburg and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father Sam Smith, and one sister Loretta Crowe.

Funeral services will be 10 am Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, KS with Father Michael Baldwin of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. The family will receive their friends from 7 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in her memory to the Lords Diner in Pittsburg in care of the funeral home.
