Billie Huntsinger

Billie Eugene Huntsinger, 87, of Pittsburg, formerly of West Mineral, Kansas, went to be with his Lord and join his family at 4:07 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital. 

He was born October 11, 1930 at West Mineral, Kansas to Billie and Mamie (Castiagno) Huntsinger. He attended grade school in West Mineral, till the family moved to the state of Washington, living there till moving back to Parsons, Kansas. After the death of his parents, he moved to McCune, Kansas to live with his Aunt Josephine Tridle. Later he moved to Weir, Kansas in his own home. He moved to Carrington Place after failing health. 

He is survived by his cousins. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 16) at the Star Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Brenner Mortuary to sign the register book. Friends may also leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com.

John Potter

John Allen Potter, age 80, passed away at 11:15 am Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Freeman West Hospital Joplin, MO following a sudden illness.

Mr. Potter was born December 21, 1936 in Riverton. His parents were John Richard and Mildred Pauline (Kitch) Potter. He was a lifetime resident of Riverton.

He graduated from Riverton High School with the Class of 1954. He continued his studies at Pitt State University, Pittsburg, KS ultimately earning a Master’s Degree in Metal and Wood Working.

He taught woodworking at Galena (KS) High School for 25 years. He was also a self-employed farmer. He was a member of the Lowell Friends Church, Lowell, KS, the Galena Teachers Association, and the Kansas Chapter of the National Education Assn. He served 8 years as a member of the Riverton School Board. He enjoyed being outdoors, cutting firewood, and watching wildlife, especially deer.

Surviving is one son, Alan L Potter (Rodney Hoose), Jenks, OK; one daughter Lisa K Potter-Savage (Jerry), Riverton, KS; his sister, Cheryl Roberts (Bob), Beeville, TX; one granddaughter, Ashley N. Savage, Riverton, KS; 5 nieces and 5 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Evelyn Walters, and one brother, Richard Wayne Potter.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Monday, November 13, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Jeff Adams will officiate. Private burial will follow.

Margaret Martinache

Margaret Mary Martinache 93, of Brooksville, FL died 9:00pm Thursday November 2, 2017 at the Penbry Estate Assisted Living Center in Eustis, FL following an illness.

Margaret was born November 28, 1923 in Franklin, KS the daughter of Frank and Juliette (Steve) Martinache. Margaret was a graduate of Arma High School in 1942. Following high school Margaret moved to Detroit and pursued a career with General Motors working in the Cadillac Division as an executive secretary. Margaret worked for 45 years retiring in 1987. Margaret was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Brooksville, FL. After retirement Margaret enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe. 

Survivors include special friends Bob Cooper and wife Maureen and family Eustis, FL and Evelyn Bahr of Florida.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mary Martinache Kalin and Julia Martinache Yerman, special friend Lois Riley.

Graveside Services will be 10 a.m. Monday November 13, 2017 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Jim Sukraw officiating. Louise Oates

Louise Baker Oakes, 90, of Pittsburg, KS passed away Monday, November 6, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 20, 1927 to Gottlob and Lena Walz. She married Walter Scotty Baker on November 4, 1946, he preceded her in death. Louise then married Richard E. Oakes on July 11, 1987, he also preceded her in death.

She attended schools in Ohio and moved with her parents to Junction City, KS. She met and married Scotty Baker in Ft. Riley, KS. Her family moved to Pittsburg, KS in 1946 where they owned and operated the family business, Pittsburg Laundry and Dry Cleaning for 30 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara A. Baker of Parsons, KS and Linda L. Baker of Oklahoma City, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Otto E. Lutz and both of her husbands.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS. Inurnment will be at a later date.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made out to the SEK Humane Society.

Charles Perrie

Charles Weems Perrie, 75, of Pittsburg, died October 30, 2017 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.
He was born September 20, 1942 in Maryland, the son of Charles Perrie, Claire (Duvall) and step-dad Arthur Sizemore.

Charles worked for Tri-State trucking company as a truck driver.

Survivors include sons; Wade (Rose) Perrie of Baltimore, Maryland, Michael (Jeannie) Perrie of Baltimore, Maryland, daughter; Linda Luca of Baltimore, Maryland and 6 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Willis Hopkins

Willis G. “Hoppie” Hopkins, age 73 of Columbus, passed away at Mercy Maude Norton Hospital in Columbus at 8:45 PM on November 2, 2017.

Willis was born on September 4, 1944 to the union of Connie E. Hopkins and Leona “Chub” (Reid) Hopkins. He worked for Cherokee County as a backhoe operator for 20 years before beginning his own contract lawn-mowing service, which he operated for several years.

Willis was a regular attender of the Central Christian Center in Joplin. He loved hunting, attending rodeos, participating in horse-pulling, and spending time with his family.

Willis married Barbara Parsons. They had one son, Mark, and they later divorced.

Willis is survived by his son, Mark Hopkins (wife, Melissa) of Columbus; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 1:30 PM at Park Cemetery of Columbus. Pastor Wes Davis will officiate. A visitation will take place before the service from 12-1:00 PM at Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbnus.

Rod Dutton

Rodney Browning Dutton of Pittsburg, KS died at his home on Friday, October 27th at the age of 67. Rod was born in Wichita, KS and moved with his wife to Pittsburg, KS in 1972 where he worked as an artist and commercial graphic designer. This work can still be seen throughout Pittsburg. His paintings and drawings have been displayed in numerous shows in the Four State area. His love for others turned Rod and Janet's place into a second home (and a second family) for many friends. Rod's love as a friend, father, and husband will continue to be felt by those fortunate enough to have known him.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; his sons, Eric and his wife Rebecca of Gainesville, FL, and Tim and his wife Jessica of Fort Worth, TX; three grandchildren, Erica's daughter Isabel and Tim and Jessica's sons Gordon and Oliver; and his sister, Guyla Bennett of Covington, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Hilda Dutton of Wichita, KS.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Project Alternative through the Greenbush Education Service Center (620-704-4396). Checks may be made out to Greenbush. A donation will help others continue Rod's work teaching art to children with emotional and behavioral disabilities. Although he began this work in the last years of his life, he often said it was the most fulfilling work he had ever done. A celebration of his life will take place at 2:00 PM at the Frisco Event Center at 210 E 4th Street, Pittsburg, KS on Thursday, November 9th. All are welcome.
