Dom Blessant

Dom Blessant, 57, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017. 

He was born February 16, 1960, at Pittsburg, KS, the son of William "Bill" and Betty (Nicholson) Blessant. He attended local schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School. Dom worked for Alternate Fuels for 13 years and was an equipment operator for the Mulberry Limestone Rock Quarry since 1993. He loved to fish and hunt and spend time at his cabin. 

Dom is survived by his mother, Betty Blessant of Pittsburg, one brother, Matt Blessant and his wife, Lisa of Mulberry. He is preceded in death by his father, Bill Blessant. 

A graveside service for Dom is set for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 15, 2017, at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the SEK Humane Society. Nan Shepherd

Nan Louise Shepherd, 74, passed away at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Via Christi Hospital. 

She was born August 12, 1942 at Pittsburg, the daughter of A.S. “Buck” and Louise M. (Farnsworth) Ridley. She lived in Iowa, Hamilton, Missouri, and moved back to Pittsburg with her family when she was in grade school. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1960. 

On May 27, 1960, she was united in marriage to Roger Lee Shepherd at Pittsburg. They later divorced, but remained good friends. Mrs. Shepherd loved to work, sometimes working as many as three jobs at one time. She worked at McNally’s Manufacturing. They owned and operated Shepherd’s Retail Liquor Store, and she worked at Ramsey’s Department Store for twenty years, before working at the Crawford County Mental Health Center for twenty years, where she retired from. Membership was held in the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg and she also attended the Frontenac United Methodist Church after moving to Frontenac. Mrs. Shepherd was known for her caring, giving to others and big heart for family, friends, and even those she didn’t know. Her favorite pastime was watching and feeding birds, especially humming birds, and butterflies. 

Survivors include her daughter, Angela Swartz and her husband, Tom of Pittsburg; four grandchildren, Alyvia Swartz, Dylan Swartz, Ross Shepherd and Ryan Shepherd; and a great-grandson, Emmett Shepherd. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Mark Shepherd, her ex-husband, Roger Shepherd, and a brother, Robert Ridley. 

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday (June 15) at the Brenner Mortuary with Chaplain Adah Hutchcraft officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 11 a.m. The family suggests memorials to Angels Among Us and/or SEK Humane Society. Marvin Nahon

Marvin D. Nahon, 85, of Frontenac, KS died Monday, June 5, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. 

Marvin was born September 25, 1931 in Mulberry, KS to Alphonse and Frances Krejici Nahon. He attended and graduated from Cherokee High School in Cherokee, KS. 

On April 4, 1953 Marvin married Gloria Cabodie in Girard, KS. She survives at the home.

Marvin was employed with the City of Pittsburg for 30 years. He also worked at Freeto Construction for 18 years, SEK Construction for 2 years, the Department of Transportation for 1 year, Beachner Construction for 1 year, as well as the State of Kansas, Campbells 66 and Cooper Supply. He retired on July 1, 1997 from the City of Pittsburg. 

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Nahon; Daughters, Linda Filby and Pamela Trahan; Son, Marvin Nahon, Jr.; Grandchildren Mellissa McGuire, Jennifer Dickinson, Brianna Filby, Kevin Filby, Kristi Nahon, Keith Trahan and Kristen Fickes, and 6 great-grandchildren. 

Casketbearers include Kenneth Filby, Kevin Filby, Mathew Dickinson, Brianna Filby, Richard McGuire and Jennifer Dickinson.

He was proceeded in death by his Aunt Sylvia and Uncle Ramage Nahon; Mark and Allie Spicer, who raised him; Sister, JoAnn Nahon; Parents, Alphonse and Frances Nahon, and grandmother Della Nahon.

Lillys Clugston

Lillys May Clugston, 91, of Pittsburg, formerly of Cherokee, KS, died June 5, 2017 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS.

She was born September 23, 1925 in Joplin, MO the daughter of Walter Lee and Sylva Maxton Wisby. She had been a resident of Pittsburg 21 years, moving from Cherokee, KS.

She married Chester Clugston on June 21, 1946 in Coffeyville, KS. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1996.

Mrs. Clugston was a homemaker and mother for most of her life.

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Pittsburg and a 50 plus year member of the Cherokee Order of the Eastern Star and the Kent Chapter #117 of Weir, KS.

Survivors include one son Chester Lee Clugston and his wife Paula of Grove, OK, three daughters Debby Kay Johnson and her husband Hoyt of Chicopee, KS, Mary Beth Heiskell and her Fiancé Bruce VanSlyke of Parsons, KS, Janie Thompson and her husband John of Ozark, MO, 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chester, two great-grandchildren and her twin sister Phillys Ambler.

Memorial services will be 2 pm Friday, June 9, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home & Crematory, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, with the Rev. James Sukraw, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cherokee City Cemetery in Cherokee, KS. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm Friday at the funeral home. Neil Schmidt

Neil David Schmidt, 81, of Frontenac, KS, died June 6, 2017 at his home.

He was born August 10, 1935 in Denver, Colorado, the son of Ben and Mae DeVore Smith. He had lived in Frontenac since September of 2016, moving from Quapaw, Oklahoma.

Mr. Schmidt was veteran of the US Army serving from February 27, 1953 to February 17, 1956, during the Korean War. Decorations and medals included the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany). His most significant duty assignment was Light Weapons Infantryman.

He married Ruth Miller on May 20, 1956 in Los Angeles, California and she preceded him in death on February 28, 2006.

Mr. Schmidt was a self employed machinist, prior to his retirement.

Membership was held in the First Christian Church in Quapaw, Oklahoma.

Survivors include one daughter Caryn L. Normand and her husband Tyler of Frontenac, KS, two sons Neil Schmidt Jr. and his wife Lorell of Poway, California and Robert Schmidt of West Virginia, three sisters Marjorie Cromb and her husband James of Inwood, West Virginia, Josephine Chapman of Fresno, California and Alice DiSabatino and her husband Kevin of Georgia, nine grandchildren Jeffrey McClain, Trey Dawson and wife Brittany, Tyler Dawson, Gessyca Schmitzerla and husband Mike, Savannah Schmidt, Allie Schmidt, Abby Normand, Shelby Normand and TJ Normand and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth, one son James Schmidt and two brothers, Willie Schmidt and Sam Schmidt.

Private services and inurnment will be at a later date at the GAR Cemetery in Miami, Oklahoma. Arrangements are by the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home & Crematory, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, KS. Michael White

Michael Allen White, age 36, of Pittsburg, Kansas, unexpectedly passed away Saturday evening, June 3, 2017, at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

Michael and his twin brother, Kevin, were born February 22, 1981, in Pittsburg, to Dale and Teresa (Ison) White. He graduated from Frontenac High School in 2000. Michael enriched others though his cheerful disposition, generous nature, and zest for life. An avid collector, Michael was a regular at auctions and flea markets, buying Coca Cola items, guns, and fishing gear. But by far, his greatest collection was the countless number of friends he accumulated throughout his life. Michael was eager to participate in any outing or gathering with family or friends and a great day for him would include fishing and a picnic. Quiet times were filled with word searches, puzzles, computer games, and his newly-discovered pastime, Facebook.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Dale; grandparents, Jesse & Corrine White and Willard & Lavona Ison; and two uncles, Steve White and Willie Ison.

Survivors include his mother, Teresa White, Pittsburg; two sisters, Brandi (Gabe) Lee, Frontenac and Ashia (Brent) Chapman, Joplin; five brothers, Kevin (Kadi) White, Lamar, Markell (Aubri) White, Jamie White, Justin (Sami) White all of Frontenac, and Shawn (Sammy) White, Lamar; eight nieces and nephews, Austin C., Riley, Annie, Myah, Asher, Austin W., Sophia, and Moralia; aunts, Jan Pierce, Carthage and Diane Ison, Lamar; a large extended family and many friends.

A funeral service followed by visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 7th at Daniel Funeral Home.

Kylie Holder

Kylie Dawn Holder 36, of Cave Springs, Arkansas passed away suddenly at her home following a brief illness.

Kylie was born October 6, 1980 in Lyons, KS the daughter of Joe M. Sinnett and Melanie A. Godfrey. She soon moved to Pittsburg attending and graduating from St. Mary’s Colgan High School in 1999. Following graduation she attended and graduated from Kansas University. 

On October 24, 2009 Kylie married Seth R. Holder at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; he survives at the home with their children. Kylie was a member of Keypoint Church in Rogers, AR. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with friends and family, and raising their 3 children. Absolutely nothing filled her heart more than watching her children grow, seeing them achieve milestones, and guiding their steps along the way. Her children will forever be a reflection of her kind smile, blue eyes, love of the Lord…and her orneriness. 

Survivors include her husband; parents; children Wyatt, Hank and Annie Holder of the home; siblings Steve Sinnett and wife Heather of Rock Springs, IA, Scott Sinnett and wife Denise of Wylie, TX, Sean Sinnett of Wichita, KS, Stasha Kuhn of Assaria, KS, Jara LeGron and husband Dean of McPherson, KS, Zachary Sinnett of Joplin, MO and Seth Sinnett and fiancée Kaytlyn Lewis of Springdale, AR; maternal grandmother Betty Godfrey of Pittsburg, KS; paternal grandmother Ann Kendall of Pittsburg, KS; father and mother in-laws Dell and Deena Holder of Norwich, KS; brother in-laws Tyler Holder and wife Kate of Murdock, KS and Jordan Holder and fiancée Leann Patterson of Cheney, KS and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Tuesday June 6, 2017 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will be private at the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. Rosary will be recited at 7:00pm Monday June 5, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
