Lonnie Best

Lonnie James Best, age 48, passed away Tuesday, Sept 1, 2020 at his home following an illness.

Lonnie was born January 19, 1972 in Columbus. He was a lifetime resident of Columbus.

He worked in masonry at construction projects. He was a member of Columbus Christian Center, Columbus, KS. He actively participated in NA Recovery. He enjoyed working on cars and fixing things.

Lonnie was married to Joanne Harmon on May 1, 2016 in Baxter Springs, KS. She survives.

Additional survivors include two step-daughters, Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie and Cheii Tsinhnahjinnie, both of Parsons, KS.

Lonnie was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, for cremation.

The family invited friends to attend a memorial service at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Columbus Christian Center, Columbus. Pastor Jim Lewis will officiate.

Dennis Gregg

Dennis L. Gregg, 66, of Mulberry, passed away at 3:08 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2020, at the Pittsburg Care and Rehab.

He was born February 26, 1954, at Pittsburg, KS, the son of Clinton and Eula M. (Gilbreath) Gregg.

Dennis served in the United States Army in Korea and in Vietnam before being Honorably Discharged.

He worked as an electrician.

Dennis is survived by one daughter, Rosie West (Rhett Young) of Pittsburg, three brothers, Michael, Steven and Douglas Gregg all of Pittsburg, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Kurt Zenbauer

Kurt Zenbauer, age 48 of Galena, passed away at his home on Friday, August 21, 2020. 

Kurt was born in Cleveland, OH on August 4, 1972 to the union of Mark Anthony “Tony” Zenbauer and Helen Virginia (Smith) Zenbauer. 

He and his family moved to Galena in 1977. Kurt worked as a line worker at Glister Mary Lee in Joplin, and also as a bread maker, meat cutter, and “jack of all trades” at Ryan’s Restaurant in Joplin. 

His favorite thing to do was to attend church at the Joplin Seventh Day Adventist Church where he had been a member for several years. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Tony Zenbauer. Survivors include his mother, Helen Zenbauer; and one brother, Erich Zenbauer, both of Galena.

Shawn Packard

Shawn Joseph Packard, 58, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away in his sleep Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at his home.

He was born Monday, October 2, 1961, to Charles E. and Evelyn Marie (Ferraro) Packard. Shawn attended Pittsburg public schools graduating from Pittsburg High School in 1979 where he was involved in Dragon football and track. He earned several honors during high school football. While playing football at Pittsburg State, he received a bad leg injury which cut short his football career.

Shawn graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BS in Secondary Education emphasizing in Health and Physical Education and a Masters degree in Physical Education. He taught for 14 years at Pittsburg Community Middle School as an instructor for Health and PE and later as the schools Athletic Director. At the same time, Shawn owned and operated a business called Pack’s Gym where he taught an after school weightlifting program for his students. 

He is survived by a son, Shawn Jacob Packard, who was his whole life; two sisters, Deanna Fields and her husband, John of Pittsburg, KS, and Mary Packard of Pittsburg, KS; two brothers, Charles Packard and his wife, Cheryl of Lawrence, KS, and James Packard and his wife Sheila of Rolla, MO. Also surviving are his nephews, John D. Clark, Ashley Packard, and Ian Packard and nieces, Kimberley Casper, Debra O’Doherty, Angie Prendergast, and Alyssa Packard. There are seven great nieces and four great nephew, that Shawn thought the world of.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

In the wake of COVID-19, A Private Family Only Graveside service will be held Saturday, August 29, 2020. Audrey Crutcher

Audrey Elaine (Golden) Crutcher, revered high school business educator and former Fort Scott resident, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020, in Springfield, Missouri. Her husband of nearly 65 years, James Samuel “Tex” Crutcher, preceded her in death on July 26, 2018.

Born October 1, 1931, on the Golden family farm and ranch near Garland, Kansas, she was the daughter of Walter Bryan Golden and Opal Louise (Pettibon) Golden.

Crutcher graduated from Fort Scott High School and then attended Fort Scott Community College where she was named homecoming queen in 1949. She continued her education at Kansas State Teacher’s College and graduated with a degree in business from what is now Pittsburg State University. 

After college, she worked in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, as a secretary at the headquarters of Phillips 66 Oil Company and lived in an apartment building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. After two years she returned to Pittsburg, Kansas, where she was employed at the Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma Dairy Association.

She married James Samuel “Tex” Crutcher November 25, 1953 in Pittsburg, Kansas. They later moved to Columbus, Kansas where her husband was assistant coach of football, basketball, baseball and track at Columbus High School from 1955 to 1958.

In 1958, the Crutcher family, which now included son Greg and daughter Kim, moved to Garland, Kansas to help manage the Golden Farm and cattle operation with her father Walter B. Golden. They continued farming but moved to Eddy Street and later East National Avenue in Fort Scott where the farm and ranch operation was headquartered. For many years she was employed at Fort Scott Motors, an automobile dealership.

In the early 1970’s, Audrey Crutcher returned to college and earned a teaching certificate. She performed her student teaching obligations at Uniontown High School then took a position teaching business practices, accounting and typing at Fort Scott High School for many years. Her leadership and mentoring influenced many young women to pursue careers in business.

In their retirement, she and her husband Tex, former president of Citizen’s National Bank, managed a popular travel club for seniors called Funseekers for more than 20 years. The group traveled regionally and to countless destinations around the world. She was a longtime member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization that supports women’s educational opportunities

The Crutcher’s moved to Springfield, Missouri, in June 2015, to be closer to their daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include daughter Kimberley Hart and her husband James of Willard, Missouri; a son, Greg Crutcher, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three grandsons, Aaron Hart and wife Kristi of Jefferson City, Missouri; Justin Hart and wife Sarah and Tyler Hart and wife Kayla of Republic, Missouri. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Trysten, Mason, Grayson, Abe, Remington, Viv, Marion James and Eliza Mae.

Additionally, she is survived by her sister Bernita Hill and nephew John Hill, both of Fort Scott and Robb Hill of Des Moines, Iowa. In Texas, Crutcher is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Paul DeWitt Crutcher, William Donald Crutcher, Diane Margaret Crutcher, Judy Jane Crutcher and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rev. Dr. Jared Witt and Rev. Steve Cole will conduct funeral services at 11:30 A.M. Friday, August 28th at the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Scott. The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:30 A.M. prior to services at the church. Private burial will take place at the U. S. National Cemetery in Ft. Scott. Camille Parnell

Camille Lynn Parnell, age 58, a resident of Fort Scott, died Sunday, August 23, 2020 at her home. She was born July 11, 1962 in Ida Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Ronald Zimmer and Cherrie Clark Zimmer. 

Camille worked for Mid-Continental Restoration Company. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and gardening. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandkids. 

Camille is survived by her two children, Jimi Huntsman and husband, Garrett, of Peculiar, MO., Zach Parnell and, Cassidy Riley, of Harrisonville, MO.; three grandchildren, Athena Parnell, Collin Huntsman, and Riley Parnell; dad, Wayne Stehr, and wife Nell, of Newcastle, Ok.,; three brothers, Chris Zimmer, of South Carolina, Andy Stehr, of Midwest City, OK., Adam Stehr, of Norman, OK., two sisters, Patti Sangster, of Norman, OK., and Karla Brinkley, of Blanchard, OK. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

There was cremation. Pastor Michael Apfel will conduct a Memorial Service at 2:30 P.M. Friday, August 28, 2020 at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Stanley Edmondson

Stanley D. Edmondson, age 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 11:51 am, Friday, August 21, 2020 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO. Stanley accepted Jesus at an early age at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was a lifetime resident of Columbus.

He was born on February 10, 1939 in rural Columbus, KS. His parents were Shade and Lucille (Relf) Edmondson. He graduated from Cherokee County Community High School with the class of 1956. He then graduated from a Kansas State barber school in Wichita, KS and barbered from 1962 – 1966.

Stanley proudly called himself a Kansas wheat farmer. He started driving a tractor at age 9 and continued working the fields until his death. He farmed many years with his dad and brother and most recently with his son. He was an active member of House of Prayer, Riverton, KS and was past president of Columbus Jaycees. 

Stanley lived life to the fullest. He had a passion for fun and adventure and lived that out as an avid hunter, fisherman, piloting his own plane, participating in demolition derbies, dune buggy driving, motocross and motorcycle trips, flying Powerchutes, and building tractors for professional tractor pulling, at which, he was very successful.

Stanley was married to Patricia Ann Randall on January 20, 1961 in Siloam Springs, AR. They were the best of friends and had over 59 wonderful years together. Their granddaughter Tori once said, “I hope someday I have a marriage like grandma and grandpa.” Stanley’s loving wife Pat survives him.

Additional survivors include one son, Derek “Shade” Edmondson, (wife, Sandra), Columbus; two daughters, Kim Linebarger (husband, Dan), Granbury, TX, and Karla Line (husband, Garvin) Columbia, MO; one brother, Ted Edmondson,(wife, Rebecca), Columbus; nine grandchildren, Paul Bezinque (wife, Nicole), Joel Bezinque (wife, Stephanie), Tori Bezinque, Jacob Line, Travis Line, Ethan Line, Drew Edmondson, Kyle Edmondson, and Natalie Edmondson; and 5 great-grandchildren, Kate, Foster, Kyla, Brooks, and Lane, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Patsy Bendure.
Stanley’s family will cherish his memory especially the many family gatherings for holidays and the annual family dove hunt. He will be greatly missed by each of us.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at House of Prayer, Riverton, KS. Pastor Audie Tash and Ronnie Johnson will officiate. Friends are asked to observe Covid restrictions by wearing masks and social distance. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, KS. James Mechling

James Leroy Mechling, 81, of McCune, Kansas, died at 2:49 p.m., Friday, August 14, 2020 at his residence. 

James was born October 1, 1938 in McCune, the son of Ely and Edith (Morrow) Mechling. He grew up and attended schools in McCune and graduated from McCune High School in 1956. He received a football scholarship and his Business Administration degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas in 1960. 

James married Nancy K. Ashworth on August 22, 1965 in Millington, Tennessee and to this union one son was born, James Webb Mechling. 

Surviving is his wife, Nancy, of the home. 

James worked for Phillips 66, Equitable Life Assurance Society, and DeLange Seed. He was the owner of a retail store in Iola for ten years. 

He was a member of the United Chapel Church at rural McCune and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He enjoyed flying and Kansas State Football. 

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Steve Bubna officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the McCune Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m., until service time on Friday.

Freida West

Freida Kay West, 78, of Girard, died Monday, August 17, 2020 at her residence. 

Freida was born October 5, 1941 in Columbus, Kansas, a daughter of Alfred F. and Edna Marie (Larison) Stanley. She grew up and attended schools in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School. 

Freida married Jesse West, Sr. on January 16, 1959 in Miami, Oklahoma. Jesse survives of the home. 

She enjoyed her family, sewing, bowling, dancing, and archery. 

Survivors, in addition to her husband, Jesse, of the home, are her sons, Jesse West, Jr. of Girard and Michael West, and his wife, Susan, of Girard; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sisters, Nancy Cornwell, and her husband, Frank, of Ocala, Florida and Martha Garrison, and her husband, Francis, of Columbus, sister-in-law Sandra Stanley. 

Freida was preceded in death by a brother, Carson Stanley.

Ernestine Kunshek

Ernestine Martha Kunshek, 86, of Girard, Kansas, died at 5:58 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

Ernestine was born February 6, 1934 at rural Walnut, Kansas, a daughter of Elmer and Emma (Wiechert) Reith. She graduated from Girard High School. 

Ernestine married Raymond Kunshek on November 21, 1953 in Girard. He preceded her in death on February 20, 2010. 

Ernestine and Raymond made their home on the family farm north of Girard, where she was a farm wife and later worked in the clerical departments at Mt. Carmel Medical Center and SEK Community Health Center. 

She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard, where she was a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Bethany Club, United Farm Wives, and a 4-H Club Leader.

Ernestine enjoyed her family, her faith, reading, playing cards, crafts, and baking. 

Survivors are daughters, Diana Henderson (Don) of Springfield, Missouri, Connie Murphy (Brent) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Alice Miller (Don) of Olathe, Kansas; sons Chuck Kunshek of Girard and Bill Kunshek (Susan) of Girard; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Dolores Stolte of Overland Park, Kansas. 

Ernestine was preceded in death by a brother, Haward Elmer Reith. 

Private family funeral services will be Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard with Pastor Mark Wenzelburger and Vicar Jaron Melin officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at rural Hepler, Kansas.

Harriette Buckner

Harriette Buckner, born October 12, 1927 in Columbus, KS to Leslie C. and Florence Calhoun Gallagher, died on August 20, 2020.

Harriette graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in 1944 and attended Kansas State Teacher’s College, Pittsburg, KS.

Harriette married Virgil A Buckner on February 16, 1946. They were happily married for 72 years. Virgil preceded Harriette in death in May, 2018. 

She was an accomplished pianist and accompanied the First Christian Church Choir for many years. Harriette began work for the Cherokee County Welfare Department, which later evolved into the Kansas State Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services where she worked for many years retiring in 1988.

Survivors include her son and wife, Brent and Barbara Buckner of Oklahoma City, OK; granddaughter Beth Ann and husband Gary Kilpatrick and their children, Emily and Cade Kilpatrick of Woodway, TX; granddaughter, Belinda and husband Chris McAuliffe and their children, Riley and wife Lindsay McAuliffe, Grand Forks, ND, Redd McAuliffe, Blackwell, OK, and Rhett McAuliffe , Oklahoma City, OK.

Family graveside services will be held at a later date at Park Cemetery, Columbus, KS.

Jimmy Adcock

Jimmy Curtis Adcock, 84, of Arma, died August 14, 2020 at his home. 

He was born December 31, 1935 in Pittsburg the son of Curtis William and Ruth M. Hudson Adcock. He had been a resident of the Pittsburg area for most of his life. 

Mr. Adcock was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Air Force with the 479th Transportation Squadron, from June 8, 1954 to July 24, 1957. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. 

He married Kathleen Williams in Miami, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death on September 18, 1989. 

Mr. Adcock was an over the road truck driver for 36 years, prior to his retirement. 

Membership was held in the American Legion Post #43 in Frontenac, KS. 

Survivors include three daughters Ellen M. Smith and her husband David of Arma, Patty Adcock of Pittsburg and Ruth Ann Kasiah of Arma, 9 grandchildren including Jordan Howard of Pittsburg, Travis Howard and his wife Misty of Miami, Oklahoma, Will Howard and his fiancé Shea of Owasso, OK, Shane Adcock and his wife Summer of Pittsburg, Theresa Bartmass and her husband Austin of Pittsburg, Mariah Adcock of Pittsburg, Audrey Garrison and her husband Michael of Kansas City, MO and Rebecca Pope of Seattle Washington. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jack Adcock and one sister June Adcock. 

Graveside funeral services will be 2 pm Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at the Frontenac City Cemetery, with the Rev. Daryl Gaddy, officiating. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside service by the Frontenac American Legion Post #43. The family will receive their friends from 6 to 7 pm Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at the Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay, in downtown Frontenac, KS.

Brenda Hall

Brenda Ann Hall, age 73, of Columbus, KS, passed away Monday, August 17, 2020 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO. She was surrounded with love by her daughter, granddaughters and her sister at heart Terrie Porter. Brenda was born February 7, 1947 in Campbell, MO.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years Delmas Hall, her daughter Cheryl (Hall) Yetley and two granddaughters, Tori and Lexi Yetley of MD, brother Phil Vincent of MO, Aunt Imogene Young and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Maxine Vincent and a brother Bobby.

 

Vincent. Brenda was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. She and her husband Del were co-creators of Sonshine City in Columbus and owned and operated Four State Printing. Brenda will be missed by her family and many friends including her Sonshine Sisters and Diva Chicks Scrapbooking Group.

Donnie Harris

Leonard Donald “Donnie” Harris, Sr., 77, of Weir, Kansas, passed away at 6:36 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Via Christi Hospital.

He was born September 14, 1942 at Pittsburg, to Leonard Donald Harris and Meredith Margaret Marie Harris. He graduated from Weir High School, Independence Community College and Mechanics school in Kansas City.

Mr. Harris served in the United States Air Force, where he was an aircraft mechanic and airman during Vietnam. He also served in the Army Reserve as a staff sergeant. 

Donnie worked as a mechanic for Yellow Freight for twenty-five years. Currently he worked for the City of Weir and was a bus driver for USD#247.

On January 1, 1994, he was united in marriage to Teresa Marie Taylor. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2013.

Donnie played the guitar and traveled the country in his early years with his band. He also enjoying cooking and even had a food truck/wagon before they were popular.

Survivors include four sons, Leonard Donald Harris, Jr and William Harris of the home, Justin Kroger of Pittsburg and John “JB” Kroger and his wife, Megan of Frontenac; three daughters, Meredith Harris and Autumn Bowen of the home, and Christina Krogen of Colorado; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Terri, and a daughter, Melissa Mooney.

A Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 20, 2020 at the Brenner Mortuary, with Rev. Dane Uber officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time Thursday, August 20 at the Brenner Mortuary. Burial will follow in the Hosey Hill Cemetery, west of Weir, KS. Twila Tedlock

Twila Mardell Tedlock, age 75, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2020 at her home following an illness.

Twila was born November 6, 1944 in Columbus, KS. Her parents were Benjamin Dale and Arline Mardell (Getman) Newberry. She was a lifetime resident of Columbus.

She graduated from Columbus High School with the class of 1962. She then worked as a seamstress at Elders Garment Factory in Columbus for a few years. After her children were grown, she began working at Ace Electric in Columbus for several years before her retirement. 

She enjoyed cooking, camping, and had been on a bowling league. She enjoyed shopping, especially if she could redeem a coupon.

Twila was married to Larry Lee Tedlock on October 18, 1963 in Columbus, KS. He survives.

Additional survivors include one son , Lance Tedlock, Weir, KS; one daughter, Robin Jessee, Columbus, KS; one brother, Bobby Newberry, Kansas City, KS; seven grandchildren, Megan Kirk, David Jessee, Elizabeth Kelley, Patricia Kelley, Candace Kelley, Samantha Joan Tedlock, and Bailey LaTurner and 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Holt.

Opal M Wood, age 92, of Columbus, passed away at Medicalodge, Columbus Saturday, August 15, 2020.

She was born January 23, 1928 south of Hallowell, KS in the family home, to Walter and Marie (Davis) Mercer. Opal attended Globe school as a girl and attended school at CCRHS.

Opal married Charles V Ball in 1947. He preceded her in death June 2, 1984. She then married Al Wood of California in 2000 and they later divorced.

In her younger years, she and her husband operated a custom combining service. Opal worked at the Parson’s Army Ammunition Plant for twenty-one and a half years before retiring in 1990. She attended First Baptist Church in Columbus. 

Opal loved working in her yard. She had a green thumb when it came to tending her garden and many flowers. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. Her homemade chicken noodles and cherry cheesecake were among her grandchildren’s favorites. Her love for family was beyond compare. She was happiest in helping others in whatever way that was needed.

Opal is survived by one daughter, Janice and husband Samuel Marsh of Columbus; one son, Charles W Ball and wife Debbie of Strang, OK; four grandchildren, Angela, husband Aaron Allen of Aledo, TX, Shelly and husband Heath Wooldridge of Batesville, AR, Leah Ball of Neosho, MO and Michael Ball of Neosho, MO; eight great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Victoria and Wyatt Allen, Ethan Fletcher, Trevor and Madelyn Rackley and Austin and Logan Girdner.

She is also survived by one brother, Lee Mercer of Jacksonville, FL, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Carl Mercer and two sisters, Mae Harper and Mary Louise Duvall.

Due to the Covid pandemic a private graveside and burial will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Park Cemetery, Columbus, KS.

Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS will have viewing and open guestbook until the time of burial. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Columbus, KS with Derfelt Funeral Home serving as custodian.

Jack Armstrong

Jack Lee “Poppy” Armstrong 87, of Pittsburg, KS died 7:58pm Wednesday August 12, 2020 at the Carrington Place in Pittsburg, KS following an illness. 

Jack was born December 7, 1932 the son of George and Thelma (Tierney) Armstrong. He was a lifelong resident of Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1951. Following high school he joined the United States Marine Corps earning the rank of Sergeant. He later earned his degree in Engineering at Pittsburg State University in 1957. 

On August 29, 1954 Jack married Doris Curry in Pittsburg, KS; she preceded him in death on November 31, 2019. Jack worked as an engineer for Dickey Clay in Pittsburg, KS; later Waddell and Reed as a Financial Advisor and Insurance Salesman and finally drove the SEKCAP INC Bus for Pre-School Children in Pittsburg, KS. 

Jack was of the Methodist Faith; member of the VFW Post # 1158; loved golfing, fishing and spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. Jack will be most remembered as a gentle, loving father and grandfather. 

Survivors include her children Lisa Mooney and husband Bruce of Pittsburg, KS, Karla Armstong of Pittsburg, KS and Jason Armstrong and wife Leann of Chicago, IL; granddaughter Melissa Mooney of Frontenac, KS; siblings Jim Armstrong and wife Judy of Walla Walla, WA and Joy Marsh of Idaho; great-grandchildren Jaxon Mooney and Dawsyn Mooney and several nieces and nephews. 

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson Casey Mooney and a brother Bob Armstrong.

Per family’s wishes private ceremonies will take place at a later date at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS.

Kevin Moore

Kevin Richard Moore passed away at his home on August 12, 2020 at the age of 57. Kevin was born March 22, 1963, in Pittsburg, Kansas to Richard W. and Virginia L. (Robison) Moore.

Kevin had Down syndrome and spent his days bringing joy to those around him with hugs, handshakes, and his unique sense of humor. He enjoyed music and dancing, always keeping a radio in his pocket. He was a lifetime member of the Special Olympics. 

Kevin is preceded in death by his father. A beloved son, brother and uncle, Kevin is survived by his mother; brother and sister-in-law, Graig and Kelli Moore; niece, Miranda Moore; nephew, Matthew Moore; and his CLASS LTD family.

Betty Filby

Betty J. Filby, 91, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020, at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, KS.

Betty was born March 19, 1929, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Lloyd and Viola (Bennett) Scott. The family moved to a farm in rural Weir in 1930. She was a graduate of Weir High School and lifelong resident of the area. 

On Sept. 11, 1947, Betty married LeNell Filby in Weir, KS, at the Weir Baptist Church. 

A loving mother and homemaker, Betty was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. During Christmas, she would bake many different treats for family and friends. She also was an avid bowler in the women's league. She loved the outdoors, gardening and planting flowers. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her compassionate spirit, kind heart, cooking and baking skills.

She is survived by her husband of almost 73 years; her brother, Neal Scott and wife Shirley of Weir, KS; children, Wilma Wehmeyer and husband Ron of Pittsburg, KS, and Kenneth Filby and wife Linda of Pittsburg, KS; grandchildren, Rhonda Phillips, Carla Wehmeyer, Melissa McGuire, Jennifer Dickinson, Brianna Filby and Kevin Filby; 6 great-grandchildren; 5 nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Bennett; nephew, Steve Scott, and niece, Cathy Ward.

Bob Markham

"Bob" Robert E. Markham, age 74, of Erie, KS, passed away August 10, 2020.

Bob was born to Wilford and Marjorie (Fuller) Markham February 24, 1946 in Dodge City, Kansas. 

Bob drove a truck for a living, working for Jack Cooper Transport. He served our country in the Navy during the Vietnam War, Gunners Mate, 3rd Class; enlisted from 1967-1969. He was a member of the American Legion, Erie, KS. Bob’s hobbies included Hunting and Fishing, playing cards and spending time with Family and Friend.

Survivors include one son Danny and his wife Claire of Oologah, OK; grandchildren Landen, John, and Emma; brother Garold Markham of Erie, KS; brother Bill and his wife Barbara Markham of Weir, KS; sister Marguerite Wilson of Girard, KS; brother John and his wife Lisa Markham of Liberty, MO; sister Deana Duncan and Lesley Bonige of Weir, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents, Mary Lou Markham, and Gerry and Pam Goeller and Gary Wilson.

Cremation arrangements are being handled through Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, KS. The family will host a graveside service at Mapleton Cemetery in Mapleton, KS.
