Tina Jacobs

Justina “Tina” June Jacobs, 60, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away at 1:24 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.

She was born November 19, 1958 at Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of B.W. and Aileen D. (Herbert) Jacobs. She had lived in Garden City, Overland Park and for the last 10 years in Olathe at Bethesda Lutheran Communities.

Tina had a great love for butterflies and enjoyed coloring, coupon clipping, dances and helping others.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Donna Jacobs of Grove, Oklahoma; two nieces, Ginger Douglas and Brandy Jacobs; a nephew, Aaron Jacobs; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Gary Jacobs.

A Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Theodore Cook officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Lois Brown

Lois A. Brown, 84, of Girard, died at 6:45 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Country Place Memory Care in Fort Scott, Kansas.

Lois was born June 14, 1935 in Barton County, Missouri, a daughter of George H. and Gertrude A. (Askins) Howard.

Lois married Johnnie G. Brown on September 17, 1951 in Mena, Arkansas. Johnnie preceded her in death on April 25, 2004.

She and her husband owned and operated a Grade A dairy farm in Cherokee County where they also were farmers. They moved to the Girard area where they owned and operated Brown’s Tastee Freez from 1965 until 1971. They owned and operated Brown’s Bakery in Girard from 1971 until 1984 before moving to a farm south of Girard in 1991 and moving to Girard in 2004. Lois and Johnnie were owners of the JLB Fencing. She worked alongside Johnnie with the fencing and cattle business.

Survivors are her sons, Johnnie G. Brown, Jr., and his wife Doreen of Girard and Ronald G. Brown of South Radley; her daughter, Becky Cobb, and her husband Joe, of Girard; her grandchildren Casey Brown and wife Amber of Arma, Lindsay Pitts and husband Bryan of Arma, Jenna Vitt and husband Jason of South Radley, Cooper Brown of South Radley, Jace Cobb and wife Jessica of Pittsburg, Brandy Hyero and husband David of Leavenworth, Ks.; her sister Madaline Deakin of Coupeville, Washington, seven great-grandchildren and numerous Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers, Andrew, Elmer, Melvin, Johnnie Lee, George Franklin, Bill; two sisters, her twin sister Louise Trisler, and sister, Jahunieta Lara, and one daughter -in-law, Tina Brown.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Girard, Kansas with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday.

Evelyn Feezell

Evelyn Lavonne Feezell, age 80, left for her heavenly home, Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Little, husband, Rod Little and granddaughter, Meagan Little, all of Waco, Texas; her son, James Feezell, of Ft. Scott, Kansas, her brother, Robert Skiles of Buena Park, California and her husband of 59 years, Floyd Feezell, of Ft. Scott.

Evelyn was born July 11, 1939, in Orange, California to Bert and Eva Skiles. 

She married Floyd Feezell on March 26, 1960. During their life together, they lived in California, Washington State and finally in Kansas.

Evelyn had a very close, warm and loving relationship with her daughter, son and granddaughter. She was also a very supportive, devoted and loving wife. Evelyn loved children in general and during her time in Washington, worked at various daycare facilities. She was also happy being a housewife and mom. She enjoyed cooking and was a long-time fan of tv cook shows. She was fond of all the family animals and was particularly so with her cat, Mischief. Evelyn was a wonderfully genuine, nice and caring person and all who came to know her invariably held her in loving esteem. She will be sorely missed.

Toby Nighswonger

Tobiah G. “Toby” Nighswonger, 45, of Fort Scott, passed away Sunday evening, October 27, 2019, at the Medicalodge Nursing Home. He was born September 19, 1974, in Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Thomas Henry and Glenda Frances (Painter) Nighswonger.

Toby graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1993. He graduated from the Police Academy in 2002. He was a Police Officer here in Fort Scott for 13 years, during which time he was a School Resource Officer for U.S.D. 234 and an advocate for the S.A.F.E. program at F.S.H.S. He was well known for his sense of humor and his love of the outdoors. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Nicole Pellett of the Home, four sons, Michael Nighswonger and Alli of Fort Scott, Thomas Nighswonger and Brian Nighswonger both of Fort Scott, and Jacob Pellett of the home, two sisters, Vicky Nihiser and Lewis of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Debby Myers of Fort Scott, and four brothers, Pete Nighswonger and Kristin of Lenexa, Kansas, Joe Nighswonger and Marcy of Osawatomie, Kansas, Kenny Nighswonger of Frontenac, Kansas and Chris Nighswonger of Springfield, Missouri, and his parents, of Fort Scott. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Tim Myers. The family would also like to recognize Jannah Farrington, as well as Wade and Julie Pellett as special caregivers throughout his illness.

Following Cremation, Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 1, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church. Ramona Fitzgerald

Ramona L. (Gabern) Fitzgerald, 58, Pittsburg, KS, passed on Friday, October 25, 2019 at Freeman Hospital after a long illness. Ramona was born on March 2, 1961 to Raymond and Dulcie (Turben) Lowe in Bethesda, Maryland.

She worked for many years in nursing facilities and through home health agencies, most recently for Medicalodge, before she became disabled.

She was married to Rick Gabern, Scammon, for many years. He preceded her in death. She had two children, Beth Gabern (Chris Summit), of the home, and Ricky Gabern, Scammon, as well as a bonus son, Jesse Gabern, Cherokee, and four grandsons Kaleb, Zayne, and Jaxson Gabern and Deklyn Summit.

She had many names in her life, including Shortcake, but her favorite was Nana. Her grandson and bumblebee, Deklyn Summit, was the light of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, three sisters, Ruth Lowe, Patricia Lowe, and Dulcie Kinder, and one brother, Raymond Lowe, and sister-in-law, Brenda Hale. 

She is survived by her children and grandchildren as well as her sister Sharon King, Amarillo, TX, Mark Lowe, Amarillo, TX, and Charles Lowe, Phoenix, AZ, sisters-in-law Sandra Jameson, Cherokee, and Tonia (Chuck) Turner, Scammon, mother-in-law Vernetta Gabern, Scammon, friend Lisa Rehm, Weir, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life dinner will take place at the Homer Cole Center, 3003 N. Joplin Street, Pittsburg, on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 5 to 7 pm.

Branka Gomez

Branka Gomez (Kousek), 85, of Riverton, Kansas passed away on October 26, 2019.

Branka was born in Popovaca, Croatia the former Yugoslavia on July 15, 1934 to Anna and Josip Kousek. She lived there until she moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1954 at the age of 20 with her mother where she volunteered at the Salvation Army and played basketball. She eventually became employed at Ace Electric working on the assembly line and working her way up to Manufacturing Supervisor. In 1983 Branka moved with the company to Columbus Kansas and proceeded to receive a degree in Business and Industrial Supervision from Labette Community College in the late 1980’s.

Branka was married to Bonifacio Gomez on April 18 1959 in Kansas City, Missouri; they were married 36 years and had 2 daughters Debbie (Gomez) Obermeyer and Deanna (Gomez) Anderson.

Branka worked as a manufacturing line supervisor for Ace Electric for more than 40 years. She enjoyed going to work every day and socializing with her coworkers. Branka truly loved spending time with her family and friends and if shopping was involved, she could not be happier.

Branka is survived by her children Debbie Obermeyer and her husband Jim, and Deanna Anderson, her grandchildren Kaitlin Obermeyer and Adam Obermeyer and his wife Amanda.

Branka is preceded in death by her parents; husband Bonifacio Gomez; son-in-law, Charles Daren Anderson.

Joan Marquardt

Joan Marquardt, 84, of Parsons, passed away at 11:24 p.m., Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.

She was born December 7, 1934 in Parsons to James “Tiny” and Mary (Gamblian) Lyles.

Joan grew up and attended schools in Parsons. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and maintaining her yard. Joan would support her family and friends as much as she could through any time or circumstance in their life.

She was a previous member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Erie and has recently been attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Parsons where she enjoyed giving candy to the children who attend church.

Joan and Billy Dean Marquardt were married on August 11, 1957 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Parsons. He preceded her in death on November 23, 2018.

Survivors include two sons, Bradley Dean Marquardt, of Parsons and Mark A. Marquart, and his wife, Kim, of Parsons; seven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; four sister, Suzie Smith of Daytona Beach, FL, Shirley Lyles, of Kansas City, MO, Joyce Jones, of Texas, Junie Shannon, of Liberty, Kansas; brothers in law, Wayne Marquardt, and his wife, Pat and Paul Marquardt, all of Parsons; sister in law, Dolores Stiles, of Thayer.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Brenda Hoppock, a brother, Harry Lyles, three sisters, Janet Lyles, Micky Stephan and Betty Driskell.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons. Friends may call at their convenience.
