Sandra DeBoutez

Sandra Kay DeBoutez, 60, of Franklin, Kansas, died at 12:57 a.m., Friday, July 5, 2019 at her residence in Franklin.

She was born February 2, 1959 in Pittsburg, Kansas, a daughter of Marcel DeBoutez, Jr. and Dorothy Boissier.

She graduated from Southeast High School in Cherokee, Kansas and Fort Scott Junior College with an associate’s degree in business.

Sandra was married to Danny Crumpacker, he preceded her in death.

Sandra enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attended all of their sporting events. She was their biggest fan and loudly cheered for each one.

Survivors include her daughters, Farrah Allen of Pittsburg, Lynnita Hutson, and her husband, Miles, of Franklin; her grandchildren, Anthony Scholes, and his wife, Kayla, Haylee Moore, Keonte Hutson, Alexis Allen, Dejah Hutson, Aliyah Allen, Jevon Allen, Tamika Voigt, and her husband, Brad; her great-grandchildren, Luke Scholes, Ezra Nally, Lincoln Scholes; her brothers, Steve DeBoutez, David DeBoutez; her sisters, Jeannine Stowell, Cheryl Austin, Diana Meister and several nieces and nephews.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Mike DeBoutez.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2019 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Thursday

Otis Gilliland

Otis “Gill” Gilliland, 95, of Wichita, died at 11:14 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at the Derby Health and Rehabilitation Center in Derby, Kansas.

Otis was born August 6, 1923 in Copan, Oklahoma, a son of Russell and Mary (Ferrell) Gilliland. He attended Earlton Elementary School and graduated from Girard High School in 1941. 

In 1941, Miss Jane Townsend, a Girard High School Principal, nominated Otis to attend Boys State which was held in Wichita. 

Otis attended Pittsburg State University before entering the US Army in 1943. He served in the infantry in the Pacific Theater where he was wounded in Okinawa. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his services and was honorably discharged in 1945. While recovering from his war injuries, Otis was in the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver and it was there he met a candy striper named Edy Lesure. They were lifelong friends and after Wanda passed away, she became his companion. She survives in Glendale, Arizona. 

He returned to Pittsburg State University for a year before attending Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas where he received his degree in Engineering. 

Otis married Wanda L. Snyder in July 20, 1948 in Moscow, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2013 after 65 years of marriage.

Otis worked as an engineer for Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita before retiring in 1985. Otis and Wanda were co-owners with his brother, Stan, and his wife, Carol, of Medicine Bow Motors in Missoula, Montana from 1985 until returning to Wichita in 1995. 

Otis was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wichita and he enjoyed his cats, square dancing, and working on Cord and Auburn automobiles.

Additional survivors are his brother, Stan Gilliland, and his wife, Carol, of Wellington, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Don Snyder, and his wife, Beverly, of Moscow, Kansas; many nieces and nephews.
Otis was preceded in death by a son, Steve; a daughter, Jetta; an infant brother, Cecil; and his sisters Frances and Pauline.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with Military Honors by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m., until service time at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 5:00 p.m., Friday.

Mary Wivel

Mary Ann Wivel, 80, of Frontenac, KS, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at her home.

She was born November 8, 1938, at Croweburg, KS, to James and Jennie (Turko) Orlando. She attended and graduated from Arma High School in 1957.

On June 22, 1957, she was united in marriage to William H. “Bud” Wivel at St Joseph Catholic Church, Arma, KS. He preceded her in death on August 15, 2003.

Mary was self-employed as hairdresser and also worked for Sunset Manor in Frontenac as a hairdresser, retiring after 23 years of employment.

Membership was held in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society. She loved to cook and bake for people and was well known for her Italian specialties. Mary also loved to travel with her husband to the black powder encampments and rendezvous.

Survivors include her sons, Michael “Mike” Wivel and William “Billy” Wivel of the home, Frank Wivel and his wife Jana of Springfield, MO; and three grandsons, Aaron Wivel and Melloney of Colorado Springs, CO, Nicholas Wivel and his fiancé Alisa Green of Springfield, MO, and John Wivel of Springfield, MO; one granddaughter, Jayme Cruse and her husband Perry of Springfield, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and two brothers, Frank A. Orlando and James “Jim” Orlando.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 10) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS, with Fr. Philip J Voegeli as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, KS. A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials be given to the American Diabetes Association and/or Sacred Heart Altar Society. Kevin Propps

Kevin Scott Propps, age 43, of Purdy, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri.

He was born February 15, 1976 in Monett, Missouri the son of Ken and Patty (Sharp) Propps.

On June 6, 1998 he was united in marriage to Mica Goetz, who survives. 

Also surviving are his mother, Patty (Sharp) Land of Grove, Oklahoma; two sons, Kaden Propps and Kyler Propps both of Purdy, Missouri; one daughter, M’kena Propps of Purdy, Missouri; two brothers, Darrell Propps and his wife Melinda and their children, Dakota and Dillon of Springdale, Arkansas and Russell Propps and his wife Lisa and their children Riley and Reagan of Topeka, Kansas; one sister, Tonya Propps and her children Mariah and PJ of Pittsburg, Kansas and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mike and Connie Goetz and their family, Ty and Courtney Goetz and their children Carsyn, Tucker and Tate; Trae and Kim Goetz and their children, Bosten, Easten and Aspen and Trent and Liz Goetz and their children, Tyson and Jolee.

Preceding him in death was his father, Ken Propps.

Kevin spent most of his life in Purdy, Missouri where he graduated from high school in 1994. For one year he resided in Colorado returning to Barry County to make his home. He was currently working for Jerry Thomas at Freedom Machine and was also a full-time student at Crowder College. Kevin was an avid Cardinal Baseball fan and most of all he loved his family.

He was an active member of Arnhart Baptist Church in Purdy where services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 8, 2019 under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville. Pastor Jason Mackey will conduct the services. Burial will be at Arnhart Cemetery in Purdy.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Arnhart Baptist Church in Purdy.

Joyce True

Joyce Ilene True, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at Country Place Living in Ft. Scott. She was born December 28, 1946, in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Lynn and Pearl Childs Haller.

She graduated from Shawnee Mission North high school then obtained her bachelor’s in education from Emporia State University. 

She married Michael True on June 15, 1968, in Shawnee, KS. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2018. Joyce taught elementary school wherever Michael was stationed until her children were born. Later, she worked as a substitute teacher. Joyce enjoyed crafts, sewing, painting, flower gardening, and traveling. She was a member of the Midwest MGA Club, D.A.R., and Pioneer Kiwanis. 

Survivors include a son, Steve True and wife Victoria, Ottawa, KS; a daughter, Julie True, Joplin, MO; and four grandchildren. Besides her husband Michael, she was preceded in death by her parents.

There was cremation. A memorial visitation will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, July 26th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Private burial will take place at a later date in the U. S. National Cemetery, Ft. Karlene Spencer

Karlene Kay Spencer, age 70, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the Via Christi Hospital Emergency Room in Ft. Scott. She was born September 15, 1948, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of William Karl Murn and Frances Rebecca Greer Murn. 

Karlene graduated from the Ft. Scott High School and the Ft. Scott Junior College. She worked for several years for the Western Insurance Company. 

She married Dr. Richard Spencer on October 12, 1971. In earlier years, she was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. She latter attended Parkway Church of God (Holiness). She enjoyed playing the piano. Karlene was a devoted wife and mother. She faithfully cared for her son, Jonathan throughout his illness. 

Survivors include her husband, Richard “Dick” Spencer, of the home. She was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan, her parents, Bill and Becky Murn and her in-laws, Virgil and Dorothy Spencer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 5th at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Ft. Wanda Coffman

Wanda Frances Coffman, age 77, a resident of Fort Scott, died Sunday, June 30, 2018, at her home. She was born on May 20, 1942 in Fort Scott, the daughter of Ralph Thomas “Tom” Norris and Iva Irene Pottorff.

Wanda was a hard worker, she was employed at Mercy Hospital for 28 years as a ward clerk, lab technician, and in dispatch. She liked to fish and garden and was a great cook everyone loved her fried chicken. She also enjoyed scrapbooking, quilting and sewing. Wanda really enjoyed spending time with her family and attended all the kids ball games.

She is survived by her sons, Donald Coffman and wife, Quita, Robert Coffman, and wife, Traci, of Fort Scott; four grandchildren, Courtney Clayton and husband, Chad, Erin Coffman, Amber Sheehy and husband, Joe, Tylar Montgomery and husband, Justin, of Fort Scott; eight great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Madison and Joseph Sheehy, Jackson and Madelynne Montgomery, and Chayden, Creed and Case Clayton; and a special friend Joann Vann, of Fort Scott; and numerous nieces nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Norman German, and a sister Kay Norris.

There was cremation. A private family graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
