William “Bill” H. Bond, Sr., 80, of Parsons, died at 8:29 P.M., Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Freeman Health System.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Tony Encarnacion officiating. Burial will be in the South Mound Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donna Needham

Donna Ruth Needham’s journey to our Lord ended peacefully on May 7, 2019, in Fort Scott, Kansas. Her journey began June 21, 1931, in Wichita, Kansas.

Donna was a graduate of Wichita North High School. She earned her B.S. in education at Pittsburg State University. There she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and gained lifelong friends as she did everywhere she was. After teaching at Hutchinson High School (1954-1962), she moved to Fort Scott and began her teaching career at Cottey College. She earned her Master’s in Education at Pittsburg State University. She retired from Cottey as Professor Emerita in 1997. While there, she oversaw the physical education program and served as chair of the Social Science division. In 1996, Donna received the Missouri Governor’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

Donna focused on all things water-related! She taught synchronized swimming, competitive swimming, diving, and water safety. She was especially skilled at working with those who feared the water. She was also a certified trainer for the American Red Cross. It was not uncommon to see Donna with her friends in her beloved boat on Fort Scott Lake where she loved to water ski and frequently taught others to water ski.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents Ray and Thelma (Warne) Needham, and her sister Faye Shogren. Survivors include her nephew Michael Shogren (Debbie) of Wichita, niece Donna Robbins (Kevin Fessman) of Derby, nephew Scott Shogren (Wendy) of Wichita and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Donna’s sense of humor, honesty, generosity and infectious laughter endeared her to everyone she met. She will be greatly missed by dear friends! She will be especially missed by Lisa Proctor of Nevada, Missouri, Karen Polon and Ed Hyde of Nevada, Missouri, Mary Ann Benage of Fort Scott, Kay Roberts of Columbia, Missouri, Becki and Kent Roberts of Fort Scott, and Janie Harrison of Conway, Arkansas. We are grateful for the care and comfort that she was given at Presbyterian Village.

Her faith and her church Mary Queen of Angels were the light in the darkness we call life.

Following cremation, the Rosary will be prayed at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Fort Scott. Father Yancey Burgess will celebrate the funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. with burial following in the St. Mary’s Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School or Cottey College and may be left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, PO Box 309, Fort Scott, KS 66701. Rosemary Schmid

Rosemary Schmid, 89, of Parsons died at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at Labette Health.
She was born Aug. 10, 1929, at Parsons to Odie J. and Chrystie M. (Singleton) Klenklen. She grew up in the rural Parsons area and attended Erie High School.

On March 8, 1947, she married Warren Schmid in Oswego. After their marriage they made their home in Parsons. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary before his death on March 17, 2011.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and its Altar Society.

Rosemary loved reading and traveling. She put other’s needs ahead of hers. Most of all, Rosemary loved all of her family. She prepared a Sunday family meal for many years for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Michael Schmid (Rochelle) of El Paso, Texas, Charles Schmid (Kathy) of Fort Worth, Texas, Marty Schmid (Donna) of Parsons; three daughters, Cathy Winans of Olathe, Cheryl Heady (Brett) of Parsons and Lori Nolting (Ray) of Parsons; 14 grandchildren, Brian Schmid (Diana), Angela Gonzalez, Haley Mathieu, Jamie Winans, Carrie VanCampen (Jason), Christie Winans, Douglas Schmid, Stephanie Schmid-Falcon (Cesar), Aaron Heady (Ashley), Tyler Heady (Sara Beth), Mallory Nolting, Samantha Schmid, Keaton Nolting (Olivia) and Tanner Nolting; five stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, Kayla Winans, Jaya Johnson, Dane, Ella and Drew Mathieu, Laney, Ashlynn and Luke Schmid, Garrett and Blake VanCampen, Sofie, Sarah and Sammy Gonzalez, Zoe, Braeleigh and Noah Schmid, Owen and Ruby Heady and Miles Nolting; a sister, Georgia Shively of Republic, Missouri; a brother-in-law, Dale Wise of Parsons; and many nieces and nephews, including special nieces Amy Moss and Karla Jones.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters; a daughter-in-law, Candy Schmid; and a grandson, Randy Schmid.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Curtis Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Sue Walls

Catherine “Sue” Walls, 80, of Parsons, passed away at 1:54 a.m., Monday, May 6, 2019 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville.

She was born on July 20, 1938 in Walnut, Kansas to Violet June (Zimmerman) and George A. Stelljes.

Sue worked at Owen’s Drug store, Wagon Wheel Café, Sunset Nursing Home and on August 23, 1966 she started working at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center as a Mental Health Technician II. She retired after 321/2 years of employment.

She and John Henry (Buck) Daugherty were married on March 27, 1956. He preceded her in death on December 5, 1977. She and Paul J. Lopez were later married and he preceded her in death. Sue and Oscar J. Walls were later married and he also preceded her in death.

Catherine loved nature and the outdoors, helping people and animals and had a very caring nature for those in need. She enjoyed family, friends, fishing, sewing, coin collecting, book collecting and reading. 

Survivors include two grandsons she raised, Trent Leroy Thomas of Caney, Kansas and Travis Levi Thomas of Parsons; grandchildren, Ben Daugherty and Dustin Daugherty both of Parsons and John Daugherty and Zoe Vogel both of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Wayne Daugherty; two daughters, Peggy Jo (Daugherty) Curtis and Lynn Sue (Daugherty) Thomas; grandson, Donald Dean Curtis, Jr.; a brother, John Earl Stelljes and a sister Elsa Llene Stelljes.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Inurnment will be later in East Bethany Cemetery.

Carson-Wall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Hixon

Jack William Hixon, age 93, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg, KS. He was born on January 31, 1926, in Redfield, KS, the son of Henry Lee and Clara Bernice Briggs Hixon.

He married Edith Judy on January 15, 1949, in Ft. Scott. Jack worked for Ray Shepherd Motors for over 40 years. When not working, he enjoyed fishing. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Grace Baptist Tabernacle. 

Survivors include his wife Edith of over 70 years; a son, Fred Hixon and wife Susan; a daughter, Rebecca Zimmerman and husband Doyle, all of Ft. Scott; 2 granddaughters, Jennifer Clark and husband Jim, Girard, KS, and Jill Hensley and husband David, Ft. Scott; 5 great grandchildren, Jack, Jill and J.D. Clark, and Cali and Carter Hensley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vern Hixon; two sisters, Ruth Brown and Lena Smith; and his parents.

Rev. Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Friday, May 10th, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle. Burial will follow in the Mt. Orum Cemetery. Maxine Engle

Maxine Engle, age 89, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, May 6, 2019, at the Medicalodge of Ft. Scott. She was born April 8, 1930, in Leon, Kansas, the daughter of John David Wagner and Violet Genell Hartman Wagner.

Maxine first married Earl Dean Priest. Following Earl’s death in 1956, Maxine married James W. McKinney; he too preceded her in death in 1971. 

She later married David Engle. He died in 1994. Throughout her lifetime, Maxine worked at a variety of jobs. She worked as a waitress and as a sales clerk. She also worked for a time with the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Department and as a truck driver. She enjoyed crocheting, making jewelry, doing crafts and tending to her many houseplants. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. 

Survivors include her four children; Linda Chambers and husband, Gerald, of Ft. Scott, Judy Hall, of, Mineola, Iowa, Earl Dee Priest, of Gas, Kansas and Mark McKinney and wife, Jane, of Ft. Shaw, Montana; fifteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren with a great-great-granddaughter on the way. Also surviving is a brother, J. V. Wagner, of Moran. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Tony Priest; a son-in-law, Dennis Hall; three brothers, John Wagner, Jr., Melvin Wagner and Wilbert Wagner and a sister, Florine Stewart.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 11th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2109 Jayhawk Rd. in Ft. Scott. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Blue Mound. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. Susie Wimp

Susie E. Wimp 87, of Parsons, passed away at 5:15 a.m., Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Pastor Vernon Norris officiating. Burial will follow in the Harmony Grove Cemetery near Dennis.
