Clara Ryder

Clara Marie Murrill Ryder, 92, of Pittsburg, KS formerly of Arma, KS, died at 4:45 pm, Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Arma Health and Rehab in Arma, KS.

She was born July 5, 1926 in Arma, KS the daughter of Tom and Melia Grano Murrill. She had been a life long area resident moving to Pittsburg from Arma in 1949. She graduated from Arma High School in 1943.

She married Elmer Raymond Ryder on November 30, 1944 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arma, KS. He preceded her in death on December 11, 1987 in Pittsburg, KS.

Mrs. Ryder worked at various businesses her entire life and retired in 1990 after working at the Census Bureau in Pittsburg for 25 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS, and the Good Sam’s Club. She enjoyed camping, bowling, gambling and bingo.

Survivors include one son Dennis R. Ryder of Pittsburg and one daughter Joyce A. Ryder Terbovich and her husband Steve of Lake Quiviria, KS, three grandchildren Brenna Gray of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Shauna Bajich and her husband Paul of Leawood, KS and Mindy Diaz and her husband Rich of Chicago, Illinois and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers Tom Murrill Jr. and Frank Murrill.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:30 pm, Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS with Father Jorge A. Lopez, as celebrant. The lector will be Buddy Gorentz. Organist will be Sharon Barone and two of Clara’s great-grandchildren Anna Bajich and Maia Bajich will sing Amazing Grace. Burial will be in the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive their friends from 1 to 2 pm Saturday at the church, where the parish rosary will be recited at 2pm. Pallbearers will be Steve Lucchi, Mike Forsythe, Jim Ciardullo, Paul Bajich, Kevin Smith and Francis Demott. Dinner will served following burial services at the St. Mary’s Colgan Field House by the St. Mary’s Altar Society. Imogene Sandella

Imogene (Scroggins) Sandella was 90 years young when she passed over on November 28, 2018 in Tulsa, OK. Born Friday, April 13, 1928 to Lola and Clarence Scroggins, she brought good luck to everyone around her. Growing up north of Columbus, Kansas she was known as the female partner in a prize-winning dance couple nicknamed the “Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of Scammon, KS.” After high school, Imogene married Louie Sandella on June 18, 1948 and they raised three children Deb, Dee and Gregg Sandella.

Imogene graduated from Pittsburg State College, and worked her way up from the accounting office at Maude Norton Hospital to hospital administrator. During these years when most small town hospitals couldn’t survive financially, Imogene earned a Robert Wood Johnson grant that saved Maude Norton.

Imogene was passionately committed to do her best whether that was keeping the hospital open or raising her children. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother with a gentle soul and generous heart. She had an ageless tenderness that touched everyone around her. Her sense of humor blossomed with age and until the very end, she brought smiles and laughter to family and caretakers.

Imogene joins those who preceded her in death: parents Lola and Clarence Scroggins, brother Bob Scroggins and husband Louie Sandella.

She is forever in the hearts of those who survive her: adult children Deb Sandella and husband Dick Fullerton (Denver, CO), Dee Sandella (Denver, CO) Gregg Sandella and Donna Yaffe (Tulsa, OK); grandchildren Walker and wife Jessica Fullerton (Brooklyn Heights, NY), Lindsey and husband Justin Greer (Tulsa, OK), Nick and wife Cyrena Sandella (Tulsa, OK), Michael Booz (San Francisco, CA), Elena Fullerton (Sydney, Australia), and Savannah Booz (Manhattan, NY); great-grandchildren Emerson Greer (Tulsa, OK), Knox Greer (Tulsa, OK), and Everett Fullerton (Brooklyn Heights, NY).

Funeral Services will be 10:00am Monday December 3, 2018 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS with Fr. Larry Parker officiating. Burial will follow at the Park Cemetery in Columbus, KS. Family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00pm Sunday December 2, 2018 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS. Cheryl Gilmore

Cheryl Jean Gilmore, 71, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Via Christi Hospital.

She was born November 12, 1947, at Pittsburg, KS, the daughter of Edwin and Dorothy (Hartshorn) Chancellor. She attended Pittsburg schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1965.

On July 26, 1969, she was united in marriage to Charles “Bob” Gilmore. He survives of the home.

Cheryl was a homemaker.

Membership was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and she also served as a Pink Lady for Via Christi Hospital.

In addition to her husband Bob, she is survived by two sons, Wayne Gilmore and his wife Tracy of Parsons, KS, and Charlie Gilmore and his wife Shawna of Leavenworth, KS; two sisters, Natasha Downing and her husband Ray of Grove, OK, and Sonja Carter of Independence, MO; a brother, Richard Chancellor of Colorado Springs, CO; and seven grandchildren, Zachary Gilmore, Luke Gilmore, Bridgette Gilmore, Avery Gilmore, Eli Gilmore, Chas Gilmore, and Jett Gilmore; and many nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 6, 2018, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Jerome Spexart as celebrant. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brenner Mortuary with a visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Private family burial will be at a later date. Beryl Harris

Beryl Shurley-Braden Harris died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at Oakview Estates Assisted Living Center in Frontenac. She was 103.

Beryl was born June 30, 1915, in Cedar County, Mo., the daughter of Marion and Goldia Shurley. She was the oldest of seven children and grew up on a farm.

Beryl was married in 1931 to Robert Braden and the couple farmed in Missouri until 1938, when they moved to Pittsburg where they purchased the Penny Exchange neighborhood grocery store. They operated the store until 1955.

In addition, the couple also owned and operated a roller skating rink in Galena during the 1950s and the Pla-Mor roller rink on North Broadway in Pittsburg.

Robert died in May 1977.

The couple had six children: Joyce, Janice, Randall, Louis, Jeanmarie and Dawson. Their first-born, Ronald Glen, died in infancy while their oldest daughter, Joyce (Ernie) Clegg died in February 2000.

Beryl married Melvin Harris in February 1982. The couple eventually moved to Toronto in 1995 where he was employed by the Kansas Department of Corrections.

While living in Toronto, Beryl owned and operated The Village Shoppe antique and collectibles store. She was also a news correspondent for The Yates Center News.

Following the closure of the Toronto Correctional Facility, Melvin joined The Coffey County Republican newspaper as an employee.

The couple resided in Fort Scott before moving back to Pittsburg.

The Harrises moved into Oakview Estates Assisted Living Center in October 2011. Melvin died May 10, 2016.

Beryl once said after reaching 100 years of life: “My recommendation to young people is to stay busy and to be nice to others.” And to everyone, “My advice would be to treat others like you want to be treated and love the Lord with all your heart.”

Beryl leaves five children, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 10 am at Bath Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg. Interment will follow at the Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas.

Eugene Dochow

Eugene L. Dochow, 88, resident of Columbus, Kansas, passed away November 27, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

He was born May 24, 1930 in Jamestown Rural, Kansas. The son of Boyd and Gertrude (Spicher) Dochow.

He was a graduate from Concordia High. After high school he joined the U.S Army and fought in the Korean War, upon his return he began his education at Emporia State, earning a Bachelor’s degree. Then he continued his education at Pitt State University where he earned a Master’s in Science and was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon Social Society.

In 1959 he married Norma Jean Wells, she resides at the home.

Eugene worked for the Olathe School district for 5 years, Columbus School district for 31 years as a teacher in the vocational department. He loved all of his students and enjoyed keeping in touch with them after graduation.

He was a lifelong member of the Columbus Methodist Church, President of Chamber of Commerce in 1979, Charter member of the Distributive Education Clubs of America’s Hall of Fame and he was the Business Division President of the Kansas Vocational Association.
Eugene was a Chris award recipient and he was inducted into the Columbus Educator Hall of Fame.

He was a board member of the Cherokee County Ambulance since 1980, member of the Keith Reeves American Legion Post #3 and the V.F.W.
Eugene loved spending time with his friends, family and his dogs. He never met a stranger and always had a smile for everyone.

Survivors include wife, Norma Dochow of Columbus, KS, sister; Carol Creely of Long Island, New York and several nieces and nephews.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers; Jerry Dochow, Loren Dochow and 2 sisters; Daisy Dochow and Joan Passmore.

Funeral Services will be 2:00pm Monday, December 3, 2018 at the Columbus Methodist Church in Columbus, KS with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Oswego Cemetery in Oswego, KS. Friends may call after 11 am, Sunday, December 2, 2018 at their own convenience.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be sent to the Columbus Methodist Church or The Columbus Community Foundation for a Vocational Scholarship. Hilda Kasjaka

Hilda Kathryn Kasjaka, 98, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg, KS.

She was born July 24, 1920, at Franklin, KS, the daughter of Spartico C. and Hilda (Suppanz) Mannoni. She graduated from high school in Detroit, MI.

On August 23, 1941, she was united in marriage to Raphael J Kasjaka in Detroit, MI. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1997.
Mrs. Kasjaka was a homemaker.

She was 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Methodist Women’s Association, Homemakers Sunday School Class, Eagles Women Bowlers, “Webelow” Boy Scout Den Mother of Troop 73, and AARP.

She is survived by a son, Kurt Kasjaka and his wife Nikki of Pittsburg, KS; three grandchildren, Lisa Case and her husband David of Overland Park, KS, Amy Haynes of Arlington, TX, and Scott Kasjaka of Pittsburg, KS; four great-grandchildren, Craig T. Kasjaka, Gabrielle Kasjaka, Kathryn Case and Harrison Case.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, an infant daughter, Karen Rae Kasjaka and a son, Craig D. Kasjaka.

Mrs. Kasjaka has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Harry Hynes Hospice. Glen Swan

Glen James Swan Jr, age 65 passed away at 4:15 am, Tuesday, November 27, 2108 at Freeman West Hospital following an illness.

Jim was born April 20, 1953 in Joplin, MO. His parents were Glen and Madge IShaffer) Swan Sr. He was a lifetime resident of Galena.

Jim graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1971. He then became a certified electrician. He worked at Gulf Chemical Plant, Riverton, KS for 13 years. He later worked at Able Body in Joplin for 6 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Galena. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Surviving is one son, Jacob Allen Swan; his mother, Madge Swan and his sister, Lola Wade all of Galena.

He was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena KS for cremation.

The family will host a memorial service at 10:30 am, Monday, December 3, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, Galena, KS. Rev Dorcia Johnson will officiate.
