Robert Hough

Robert L. Hough 77, of Pittsburg, KS died 2:55pm Saturday March 25, 2017 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS following an illness. 

Robert was born August 8, 1939 in Ft. Scott, KS the son of John Wesley and Mable (Hines) Hough. Shortly after his birth his family moved to Cherokee, KS from New Home, MO. Robert attended Cherokee Community High School and graduated in 1957. Upon graduation Robert served his country for 3 ½ years in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1960. After his military service he earned a B.S. Degree and later a MBA from Pittsburg State University.
Robert drove a bus for Crawford County Schools before going to work for Boeing Aeronautics in Wichita. He later worked for KDOT as a construction engineer in Independence, KS. In addition he worked for the City of Pittsburg for over 30 years as the Information Manager of the I.T. Department. He taught a computer science night class at PSU for many years. Robert developed and the managed the G.I.S. Department for the City of Pittsburg. 

Robert was a big sports fan especially enjoyed going to Kansas City Chiefs and Royals games. He was a season ticket holder for the Kansas City Chiefs for many years. 

On January 4, 1986 Robert married Joyce Banke Yetzbacher at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; she survives at the home. Robert was loved and respected by all his family, friends and co-workers. He will greatly be missed by all. 

Survivors include his wife; son Chris Yetzbacher of Pittsburg, KS; brother Jim Hough of Virginia; sister-in-law Ruby Lappping Hough of Virginia; many nieces and nephews including Rose Burns, John Hough, Debbie McCoy and Martha Weeks; brother and sister-in-laws Tom and Luann Banke, Sharon and Wayne Glaser and Jolene Potts. 

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond, Buford, John and Calvin Hough; nieces Margaret Hough and Ruby Hough Cross. 

Funeral Services will be 10:00am Friday March 31, 2017 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Fr. Thomas Stroot officiating. Burial will follow at the Hosey Hill Cemetery in Weir, KS. Harry Cage

Harry Lewis Cage, 86, of rural Scammon, died March 22, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.
He was born October 9, 1930 in Nita Yuma, Mississippi the son of James E. and Daisy L. Sanders Cage. He had lived at rural Scammon since August of 2005, moving from Harrison, Arkansas.
Mr. Cage served in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years.

He was a mechanic at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS for over 20 years until his retirement.
Membership was held in the Kansas Republican Party, American Legion, and National Rifle Association and he was an avid ham radio operator.

Survivors include two sons Max Cage and Philip T. “Tom” Cage both of Colorado Springs, CO, one daughter Pat Wagner of Wichita, three brothers Dewitte Cage, Robert Cage and Nolan Cage, and three sisters Alice Smith, Barbara Decker and Daisy Johanson, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Harry L. Cage Jr., four brothers and one sister.

Graveside services will be 2 pm, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Council Corners Cemetery in Cherokee County, KS with the Rev. Dennis Johnson, officiating. Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside. The family will receive their friends from 12:30 to 1:30 pm Saturday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 103 W. Main, Weir, KS 66781. Brian Shanks

Brian William Kelley Shanks, 47, of Columbus, KS died 9:50am Sunday March 26, 2017 at Pittsburg Health and Rehab following an illness. 

Brian was born April 7, 1969 in Coronado, CA the son of Thurber William Kelley Jr. and Glenna Jean Shanks Vernon. Brian has lived in the Columbus, KS community for the last 5 years moving here from the Houston, TX area. Brian loved to work around the farm and riding around the property on his Kawasaki Mule ATV. He was of the Christian Faith; loved to write, caring for his animals especially his 2 dogs and 3 cats, was known as a carpenter, enjoyed spending time with his family in the outdoors, enjoyed watching the weather and was known to be a big help around the house doing chores to help with anything that needed done. 

Survivors include his biological mother Glenna Jean Vernon; grandparents James and Betty Shanks of Columbus, KS who provided for his care; siblings James Shanks and wife Denise of Columbus, KS, Jo Ann Kelley-Vernon of Henderson, NV and Victoria Vernon of Columbus, KS and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Brian was preceded in death by his uncle Steven H. Shanks and his biological father. 

Graveside services will be 10:00am Thursday March 30, 2017 at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Rural Columbus, KS with Pastor Dennis Johnson officiating. Dan Scifers

Dan E. Scifers, 90, of Pittsburg, passed away at 9:25 a.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the Via Christi Village. 

He was born March 19, 1927 at Pittsburg, the son of Tillman and Bertha (Rogers) Scifers. He attended Pittsburg schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1945. 

Dan married his high school sweetheart, Vada Alden on April 20, 1947. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before she passed away on August 26, 2012. Dan served in the US Army during World War II, then returned to Pittsburg where he owned and operated Dick’s Transfer Company, a United Van lines service until 1984. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Pittsburg; and the Mirza Shrine. For many years, Dan and Vada enjoyed their weekends at Grand Lake, traveling with friends and watching their grandchildren grow up. 

Survivors include, three daughters, Dana Askins and her husband, Dale of Oklahoma City, OK, Kathy Fry and her husband, Jim of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Teri Blancho and her husband, Greg of Pittsburg. They were blessed with eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Dan’s parents, wife, and three brothers, Myrl, Ralph, and Charles L. Scifers preceded him in death. 

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday (March 30) at First Christian Church of Pittsburg with Rev. Pat Nixon officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery, where the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post No. 64 will provide flag folding rites. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brenner Mortuary to sign the register book. The family suggests memorials to The First Christian Church of Pittsburg, Mirza Transportation Fund, or the Pittsburg Humane Society. Bill Wulf

William “Bill” Patrick Wulf, 54, of Oswego, passed away unexpectedly March 24, 2017 at his home. 

He was born January 28, 1964 at Oswego, the son of Don and Ruth Wulf. Billy Pat was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, lover of animals, and known by many for his ornery behavior. He enjoyed skydiving, horseback riding with his sister, and was becoming a well-known artist. He was a jack of all trades and master of none. 

Survivors include his father, Don Wulf, Sr.; a brother, Don Wulf, Jr; a sister Michelle Wulf; three daughters, Kayla Garcia, Amanda Pirello, and Elizabeth Wulf; three grandchildren; and his best friend Warren “Toad” Earling. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Wulf. 

A celebration of his life will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday March 30th, at the Oswego Community Building. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate to the American Cancer Society. Jim Rhuems

Jimmy "Jim" Allen Rhuems, 81, of Pittsburg, passed away at 5:10 p.m., Monday, March 20, 2017, at his residence. 

He was born January 6, 1936, to Howard M. and Ruth D. (Pryer) Rhuems, at Pittsburg, KS. He attended local schools and graduated from College High School in 1954. Mr. Rhuems served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany for 18 months. He was Honorably Discharged in 1956. 

On August 16, 1957, he was united in marriage to Delores "Dodie" Theys in Miami, OK. She survives of the home. Mr. Rhuems worked for Dickey Clay and was a self-employed plumber for 47 years. He was trained by his brother, Milton who owned Pittsburg Plumbing. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Membership was held in the John F. Derby American Legion in Frontenac. He also served on the Rural Water District #7 of Crawford County for 17 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dennis Rhuems and his wife, Janet of Frontenac, and James "Red" Rhuems of Pittsburg, three brothers, Milton Rhuems of Pittsburg, Robert Rhuems of Pittsburg, and Warren Rhuems of Frontenac, two sisters, Ruth Hendrickson of Pittsburg, and Marilyn Buchanan of Cypress, TX, and two granddaughters, Breanna Rhuems and Brilee Rhuems and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Rhuems is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Dwain Melford Rhuems, Orville Rhuems, and Russell Rhuems. 

A Celebration of Life Visitation, will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2017, at the Christ Community Church, Pittsburg. Private family burial of cremains will take place in the National Cemetery of Fort Scott. The family suggests memorials to the Christ Community Church and/or Open Door Fellowship Church. Marilyn Beaver

Marilyn Joann Beaver, 81, of Pittsburg, KS passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS. After several years of declining health, she succumbed to pneumonia and sepsis. She was surrounded by her family as she entered Heaven and her Lord’s eternal embrace.

Marilyn was born August 19, 1935 in Mindenmines, MO to Marion and Letha (Robson) Moore. She spent her childhood in Mindenmines, attending Mindenmines schools. She was a 58-year-resident of Pittsburg. She entered Via Christi Village in 2013 after her health had declined to the point she required round-the-clock assistance. However, as a testament to the true meaning of Love and their wedding vows, her lifelong best friend, soulmate, and husband, Keith, attended to her needs every day from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

She married Keith Beaver on December 15, 1953 in Mindenmines, MO. Their devotion to each other remains an inspiration to those who knew them, and provided an example to their children and grandchildren of how family, while never perfect, is the bedrock of a life well lived. This can also be seen in how they provided babysitting, guidance, and support through the formative and into the adult years of each of their five grandchildren.

Marilyn worked as a Resident Manager alongside her husband at North Joplin Apartments for 27 years, retiring in 2002.

She was an active member of the Light House Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg while her health allowed to attend, and she remained under the guidance of Pastor Daryl Gaddy during his weekly visits to Via Christi Village.

Marilyn was very devoted to her family and loved to crochet and sew. In her younger years she enjoyed crocheting outfits for her daughter’s dolls. Sherry said one of her most memorable moments with her mom was when Marilyn crocheted a wedding dress for Sherry’s doll “Tammy,” and sewed a suit for Sherry’s doll “Ken.” She also enjoyed listening to Christian music and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Keith Beaver; Daughter, Sherry Chapman and husband Jim Chapman; sons, Michael Beaver, Mark Beaver and his wife Dianne; 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Larry Moore; and grandson, Nathan “Nonny” Chapman.

The Family will receive friends from 5-7pm Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS.

Funeral service will be 2 pm Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg KS with Pastor Daryl Gaddy presiding. Burial will follow at the Crocker Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. The Family invites friends and relatives to share memories and celebrate Marilyn’s life at a reception from 5-7, March 23, 2017 at the Homer Cole Community Center, 3003 North Joplin St, Pittsburg.
