Lonnie Tennison

Lonnie E. Tennison, age 67, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was born April 3, 1952, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Robert G. Tennison and Stella Mary Slape Tennison. Lonnie was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed spending time with friends fishing, and canoeing. 

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Stump, of the home; a son, Andrew Tennison and a granddaughter, Addelyn, all of Ft. Scott. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobbie and Billy Tennison and a sister, Mary Wallace.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, July 3rd at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Following visitation, there will be cremation. Private burial will take place at a later date in the Farlington Cemetery. 

Services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Fred Berger

Frederick (Fred) Lee Berger, 74, of Pittsburg, passed away at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at his home.

He was born May 29, 1945 at Pittsburg, Kansas the son of Wilber and Naomi (King) Berger. Fred attended school in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1963.

Fred married and later divorced Joyce Allmon and also Loretta Rogers. From those unions came eight children and one step-son.

He worked several jobs, including Harry’s Café and Yellow Transit. His main career was with Kansas City Southern Railroad. He finished his working career at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kansas and Modine Manufacturing in Joplin, Missouri.

Membership was held in Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, but he has attended Grace United Methodist Church for the last 25 years.

Fred loved tinkering with older cars and trucks. He also found a love for traveling, which he did with his love, Susie Taylor.

Survivors include his significant other, Susie Taylor of the home; two sons, John Berger (Kristi) of Afton, Oklahoma and Cordell Berger of Pittsburg; five daughters, Jewell Burns of Pittsburg, Crystal Johnson (Kelvin) of Parsons, Rosetta Allmon of Kansas City, Ericka Berger and Courtney Imhof, both of Pittsburg; a step-son, Stacy Reaves; four sisters, Wilma Smith of Independence, Missouri, Myrtle Berger of Michigan City, Indiana, Francis Ajani of Pittsburg and Linda Evans of Michigan City, Indiana; twenty-four grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Clayton Allmon, four sisters, Veoma Grant, Leona Berger, Claire Johnson and Phillistine Vann; and a brother, Wilber Kent Berger.

Fred has been cremated. Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. (July 9) at the Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Linda Stotler and Rev. Darrell Dorsey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Private family burial will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be given to the Grace United Methodist Church. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Loretta Martens

Loretta Sue Martens of Baxter Springs, Kansas passed from this life on June 30, 2019 at her home, she was 79.

Sue was born on July 8, 1940 to Miller (Jack) Thomas and Itha (Scott) McGinnis in Fredonia, Kansas. She was a caregiver and loved sewing, gardening, crafts, watching television and dancing. She liked to listen to Supertramp and Pink Floyd.

Sue is survived by two sons David Martens of Saffell, Arkansas and Chris Martens of Frisco, Texas. One daughter Sandra Martens of Galena, Kansas.

She is also survived by four sisters Shirley Bush, Linda McGinnis, Jackie Pierson and Debbie McGinnis. Also, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents, one sister Jeannie McGinnis and a brother Richard.

No services are planned at this time. The family has entrusted Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs, Kansas.

Frances Drenick

Frances Marie Drenick, 89, of Pittsburg died Saturday, June 29, 2019 surrounded by family, at Mercy Hospital in Carthage, MO, following a long illness.

She was born August 5, 1929, in Pittsburg, KS, the daughter of Perry and Florence (Wilson) Willey. 

Frances graduated from Pittsburg High School, class of 1947. She married John H. Drenick in Benton County, Arkansas, he preceded her in death in 1984.

She worked as an Office Manager for the Crawford County Mental Health for over 30 years and also served as the Secretary for the Crawford County Medical Society for many years. Frances valued her family and always enjoyed spending time with them and looked forward to Sunday dinners.

Additional survivors include 3 sons, John (Terri) Drenick of Pittsburg, KS, Mike (Kathy) Drenick of Pittsburg, KS, Steve (Julie) Drenick of Pittsburg, KS, 6 grandchildren; Amy (Alex) Maksimovich of St. Louis, MO, Shane Drenick of Pittsburg, KS, Kelsey Drenick of Pittsburg, KS, Haley (Brad) Markley of Pittsburg, KS, Anna Drenick of Pittsburg, KS, Jacob Drenick of Pittsburg, KS and a great-grandchild; Aubree Markley.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at 2 p.m at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg, KS, with Pastor Daryl Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7pm on Tuesday, July 2, 2019.

Bill King

William Alfred “Bill” King, 74, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 3:37 p.m., Friday, June 28, 2019, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was born January 1, 1945, at Wichita, KS, the son of Alfred and Catherine (Simpson) King. Bill graduated from Santa Fe Springs High School at Santa Fe Springs, CA, in 1962. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Army Airborne Division.

Bill attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and then received his Bachelors of Science in Education and Master's Degree in Administration from Pittsburg State University.

Mr. King began his career in education as a teacher at George Nettles Elementary School, Pittsburg, KS, he was then the Principal at Lakeside Elementary School, Westside Elementary School and Assistant Principal at the Pittsburg Middle School retiring in 2003. In 1995 Mr. King was the Kansas Association of Elementary Schools Principal of the Year.

In 1971 he was united in marriage to Jill Engel, they later divorced. In July of 1983, he was united in marriage to Brenda Scifers. She survives of the home.

In addition to his wife Brenda he is survived by his four sons, Kris King of Phoenix, AZ, and Will King of Ozona, TX, Rich King of Kansas City, KS, and Bryan Thorpe of Springfield, MO; two daughters, Shannon King of Pittsburg, KS, and Amanda King of Pittsburg, KS; a brother, Al King of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private family burial will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the USD 250 and/or the Pitt Chapel. Linda Epple

Linda Louise Epple, 75, of Pittsburg, died at 7:17 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2019 in the Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburg.

Linda Was born January 31, 1947 in Girard, the daughter of Richard and Iva Mae (Spillman) Epple.
She graduated from Girard High School in 1965 and she attended Pittsburg State University for 2 years.

Linda worked as a secretary in Chanute, Erie, and Wichita before retiring in 2004.

Linda was a Baptist and she enjoyed playing the piano and the violin.

Survivors are cousins including Barbara Egbert, and her husband, Vernon, of rural McCune and Beverly Houseweart, and her husband, Tim, of Littleton, Colorado.

Graveside services will be at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday at the Girard Cemetery with Pastor Darrell Barr officiating.

Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.

Tricia Boyes

Tricia Paige (Houser) Boyes, age 49 of Columbus, passed away at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS at 9:23 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

Tricia was born in Sumter, South Carolina on March 26, 1970 to the union of Raymond “Dutch” Dale Houser and Joan (Pate) Houser. She spent most of her childhood in Slidell, LA, but after both of her parents passed away, she moved to Columbus, KS in 1985 at the age of 15, where she was then raised by her aunt and uncle, David Houser (now deceased), and Gail Houser.

Tricia attended Columbus Schools, graduating with the class of 1988. She later attended Labette Community College, earning an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. With that degree, she worked as the Co-Director of the Good Shepherd Daycare, operated by First Christian Church of Columbus, which is the church that she held her membership at since moving to Columbus in 1985. Tricia loved being at home, especially when her grandkids were able to visit her. She was also very active in the community in working with teenagers, volunteering with various organizations, and even helping to co-found a Breast Cancer Support Group.







She was united in marriage with Jason Ryan Boyes on February 14, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Columbus. He survives.

Additinoal survivors include her children, Cortney Crain (husband, Zachary) of Columbus, Corbin Stanley of Columbus, Cassie Johnson (husband, Trent) of Knoxville, TN, Colten Stanley of Overland Park, KS, Sydney Stanley of the home, and Saylor Stanley of the home; one brother, Kirk Davis (wife, Joye) of Hartsville, SC; two sisters, Tara Houser of Columbus, and Shay Jacobs of Hampton, GA, three grandchildren, Gracie Stanley, Colt Crain, and Knox Crain; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Dutch and Joan, her grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at the First Christian Church in Columbus. Pastors John Warren and Roger Beason will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Daycare Center at the First Christian Church. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery with a private family ceremony at a later date.
