Eva Mayhood

Eva Pauline Mayhood, 89, of Columbus, KS died Monday, June 19, 2017 at Medical Lodge in Columbus, KS. 

Eva was born July 1, 1927 in Columbus, KS to Roy and Margaret (Chase) Laizure. 

On December 24, 1945 Eva married Lloyd Mayhood, he preceded her in death on February 26, 2010.
Eva was a laborer at the Garment Factory for several years. She enjoyed spending time at home and taking care of her family. 

Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Mayhood; parents, Roy and Margaret Laizure; sister, Dorothy A. Jarrett and brother, Harold “Sonny” Laizure. 

Additional survivors include her sons, Carrol Mayhood and wife Dorinda of Aurora, Colo., Terry, Randy Mayhood and wife Brenda of Roanoke, Texas and Joel Kim Mayhood of Columbus; brother, Earl Mayhood of Indianapolis, Ind., one granddaughter, Dana Grange and her husband David of Lone Tree, Colo., two great-grandsons, Brendan Grange of Thorton, Colo. and Kelton Grange of Lone Tree, Colo.; step grand-daughter, Justina Cambell. 

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Bath Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus, KS. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery. Big Ed Watkins

Willard Edward Watkins, better known as “Big Ed”, age 65, was pronounced dead at 10:48 am, Friday, June 16, 2017 at his home following a sudden illness.

Big Ed was born August 13, 1951 in Graham, Texas. His parents were Thomas Leslie Watkins Jr and Lucille Emma (Schroeder) Watkins.

He graduated from Riverton High School with the Class of 1969. He has lived in the Riverton KS area most of his life. He entered the US Army National Guard in 1971, serving until 1976. He joined the Galena Elks Lodge over 40 years ago. He was also a member of the IBEW Local # 95, Joplin, MO. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was an electrician. He worked over 30 years at Jackson Electric, Pittsburg, KS. He later worked at Vangel Electric, Joplin, MO.

Surviving are two daughters, Cari Watkins, and Teresa Watkins, both of Joplin, MO; two grandchildren, Kelsey Annis, and Evan Watkins; his niece, Margo Fletcher, and his nephew Paul Watkins, both of Las Vegas, NV.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by one nephew, Eric Watkins.

Funeral services will be at 6:00 pm, Friday, June 23, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Pastor Jeff D Martin will officiate. Private burial will be at a different time.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 23, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm.

Willie Payne

Willie Jewell Payne 93 of Miami passed away Sunday June 11, 2017. She was 93.

She was born June 25, 1923 in Durant, OK to Willie “Bert” and Lilly Pearl (Roy) Favors. She married Doris D. Payne on March 10, 1940 in Durant. She moved to Picher in 1956, where she raised her 11 children as a single mother. She was a loyal hardworking mother that devoted her life to raising her children. She loved Picher and loved her Picher people. She lived in Picher until she was forced to move after the tornado and the Picher buyout. She moved to Miami in 2007 residing with her son David the last 10 years.

She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Baxter Springs, KS. She worked as a waitress and various jobs to support her children. She was an Ottawa County Senior Companion Volunteer since April 1990 until her health failed in 2013 and received an award for 20 years of service in 2010. She loved her many clients.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sons, Virgil Payne, Charles Payne, Darrell Payne and Jerry Payne and 2 daughters Lilly Dardenne and Darlene DeSilva. 3 grandaughters Michelle (Kelly) DeSilva, Gayla Payne and Willie Ross and 4 grandsons Bobby Barr, Michael Barr, Randy Payne and John DeSilva and 3 brothers L.V. , Bud and Lee Favors and 4 sisters Betty Jo Mullins, Martha Olsen, Beulah Salle, Nathalena Hammett and Jackie Sloma.

Willie is survived by 1 son who she resided with David Payne and wife Alice of Miami, 4 daughters Wanda Barr of Baxter Springs, KS, Pat Rutherford of North Miami, OK Debra Crumrine and Mickey Jo Bogle and husband Jim all of Chetopa, KS and 1 sister Caril Stanfield of Talent, OR. 156 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Miami, OK. Rev. Charles Clevenger will officiate. Interment will be in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami, OK. Pallbearers will be Darrell Rutherford, Terry DeSilva, Jr., Gary Wayne Ross, Rocky Payne, Charlie Payne and Jake Payne. Honorary Pallbearers will be Curtis Payne, DeWayne Payne, Tommy DeSilva and Tim Rutherford. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Charles Dudley

Charles Leroy Dudley was born on December 19, 1934 to Charles Claude Dudley and Minnie Gandy Dudley. Charles was primarily raised by his grandparents, Richard and Bertha Gandy. He lived most of his life in the Galena, Kansas area where he attended the Galena school system. His gentle soul passed away on June 15, 2017 at the Quaker Hill Manor at the age of 82.

Charles was an expert jet engine inspector for over 36 years, retiring at the Neosho facility currently known as Premier Turbine. (Formerly known as Rocketdyne/Teledyne/Sabreliner/Premier Turbine.) He raised and bred racing quarter horses for many years, participating in races around the Midwest. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Spring River Boat and Ski Club.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and uncles who were like brothers.

Survivors include devoted wife of 63 years LaJunta Jackson Dudley; loving children, Joni Jessee (Dean); Curtis Dudley (Jacquelyn); 3 Grandchildren: Matthew Todd Jessee (Judith); Julie Jessee Miller; Nathan Charles Dudley; 4 great-grandchildren: Taylor Black, Cameron Miller, Madeline Jessee, Matthew Graham Jessee. Charles will also be missed by an entire host of friends and family!

Services will be held at 2:30 PM on Monday, June 19, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the time of the service. Immediately following the service, the friends will be dismissed from the funeral home, and the family will prepare for Private Burial.

The family will be gathering at the home of Joni and Dean Jessee, 3220 Monroe, Galena, KS.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the First Christian Church of Galena, KS or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Kathleen Kalm

Kathleen Kay Burr Kalm, 78, of Garland, KS, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

She was born April 29, 1939, at Arcadia, KS, the daughter of Thomas L. and Charlcia (Morris) Kauble. She attended local schools and graduated from Arcadia High School. On June 8, 1956, she was united in marriage to David L. Burr at Pittsburg, KS. He preceded her in death on March 24, 2011. 

On August 24, 2013, she was united in marriage to Raymond H. Kalm, Sr. at the Arcadia Christian Church. He survives of the home in Garland, KS. Mrs. Kalm was an administrative assistant at Elm Acres for 19 years. She also had served as the Municipal Judge in Mulberry, KS for 20 years and in Arcadia, KS. Membership was held in the Crossroads Baptist Church, Girard, KS. She also served in the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Rob Morris Chapter No. 74 Order of the Eastern Star, Arcadia Alumni Association, Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens, and the Pioneer Harvest Festival. Mrs. Kalm loved to crochet, having made afghans for her grandkids and baby blankets for all of the great grandkids. She enjoyed playing the organ, bird watching, and tending her flower garden. Her greatest joy though, was her grandkids and great grandkids. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Rod Burr (Debra) of Elkton, MD, and Mark Burr (Patsy) of Centerville, MO, one daughter, Karla Tersinar (Jeff) of Hepler, KS, four step sons, Randy Kalm (Lynn) of Kansas City, MO, Raymond Kalm Jr. (Lori) of Stillwell, KS, Ronnie Kalm (Julie) of Kansas City, MO, and Tommy Kalm (Racquel) of Carl Junction, MO, one brother, Donald Kauble of Lincoln, MO, nine grandchildren, Stormie Burr, Samantha Burr, Dawn Allen, Joshua Tersinar (Brandy), Heather Busch (Walter), Dustin Tersinar (Amelia), Jason Burr, Megan Burr (fiancée, Jessie) and Shawn Burr, seven step grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Beverly Hart, and one grandson, Matthew Burr. 

A memorial cremation service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Crossroads Baptist Church, Girard, KS, with Reverend Mike Buckamneer conducting the service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, June 18th, at the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg. The family suggests memorials to the Crossroads Baptist Church. Steve Brown

Steven Dale "Brownie". Brown, 56 of Pittsburg, KS died at 3:55 pm Friday, June 9, 2017 at
Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO after a short illness.

He was born January 26, 1961 in Pittsburg, the son of Dale "Brownie" and Marilyn (Long) Brown. On November 30, 1984 he was united in marriage to Julie Bennett in Pittsburg; she survives him of the home. 

Steve worked with his family running Brownie's Garage until 2008 and was currently employed at CDL as the Equipment/Transit Director.

Additional survivors include two daughters: Janelle Brown of Olathe, KS and Stephanie Krusich and her husband Eammon of Overland Park, KS, his mother Marilyn Brown of Pittsburg, a sister Julie Redd and her husband Mark of Pittsburg, two nephews Adam and Lucas Redd and a niece Taylor Redd, a grandson on the way, Benjamin Dale, and his beloved dogs Bailey & Bentley. Also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, numerous friends and his CDL family that he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother Ronnie Brown. 

Funeral services will be 10 am Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the South Broadway Baptist Church in Pittsburg, with Rev. Dan Moss officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery. Marie Brinkman

Marie Celin “Mickey” Brinkman, 82 of Pittsburg, died June 11, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.

She was born July 3, 1934 in Frontenac the daughter of Fritz and Evelyn Devlin Eichhorn and had been an area resident for most of her life.

Mickey did many things in her life; her proudest moments far and away were having us five kids. This all started when she met a handsome young man in college named Gene Bicknell. Although their lives went different directions, they remained very close to this day. She later married Dick Brinkman; he passed away a few short years later.

Mom had many interests, she loved working in her yard, paying us a few dollars to rake up leaves or pull weeds. She had a bridge club for several decades. She was an avid golfer, setting the Crestwood Country Club course record June 17, 1983. With her love for golf, she made many friends, too many to name, and she was very competitive, often traveling with her buddies to play in tournaments. Mom was a very good bowler as well. We kids couldn’t wait for Friday night bowling and we got a whole quarter to spend! She also helped start Four Paws, and was very proud to be a part of the work they do.

Mickey and her good friend Valerie Stites started Affordable Tax Service. Through hard work, they eventually gathered more than two thousand customers! It still thrives today. She retired after 27 years of service.

If you knew Mickey, then you knew she LOVED CATS! Lots and lots of cats! I can talk on this subject for a long time but I won’t. We can sum up her love for cats for everyone with one story. One night, a huge storm was headed our way. I jumped in my truck and sped over to get her. When I walked through the door, she asked why I was there. Mom, you got to come with me to a safe place. You mean because of the storm? Yes, there have already been tornados spotted on the ground! Well ya better hurry because you know I’m not leaving my cats!

Mickey, known as “MeMa” was also proud of her 18 grandchildren, and her 11 great-grandchildren (with number twelve on the way). She is survived by four children, Gena and her husband Rick Gallager, Springfield, MO, Mitch Bicknell and Vicki Wadino of Pittsburg, Mike Bicknell and wife Angela of Pittsburg, Marty Bicknell and wife Cheryl of Overland Park, sister Margie Eichhorn of Pittsburg, many many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Diney Deruy, her mother, father and a sister Mavis Thomas.

Mom will be sorely missed, her wishes are to be cremated and the family will have a private graveside ceremony at Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, on a later date. Her services will be hosted by the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home & Crematory, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, KS. The family will receive their friends from 12 to 1 pm Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the funeral home. Memorial services will be 2 pm Thursday, at the funeral home with the Rev.
