ArVilla Hubbard

ArVilla M. Hubbard, 79, went to see family, friends and to be with her God at 10:45 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2017. 

She was born on the 24th day of June in the year 1937, on a small southwest Missouri farm, to Lavurne and Marie (Konske) Geary. Then, the family moved to a farm in southeast Kansas, where she attended Able school (a one room schoolhouse on the corner of Rouse and Centennial) from first to sixth grade. From there, she went to Southeast for junior high and graduates from College High School (part of then Kansas Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University) in 1955. As a student, she won awards in public speaking and drama, and in 1955 she took first place at State for her one-man act play of Minnie Pearl. Also in 1955, she was named homecoming queen. After leaving school, she worked at the Olathe School for the Deaf, where she rode the train from Olathe to Kansas City to Pittsburg. Moving back to Pittsburg, she went to work as a saleswoman and bookkeeper for stores in downtown Pittsburg, her favorite being the Jones Store. 

In 1958, she was introduced to Sam Hubbard by her cousin, Florine. They were married on August 2, 1959 and two years later, they had a son, Samuel L. Hubbard, Jr. After the store closed, she went to work for 20+ years as the Tupperware Lady, where as the manager of the Whirlybirds, she won many sales awards before retiring from Tupperware. Afterwards, she went to work for 18 years at Wal-Mart as a sales associate to department manager and back to sales associate. ArVilla left Wal-Mart once her health would no longer allow her to walk so far. She had open heart surgery in 2013. Membership was held in the St. John Lutheran Church. She was a loving wife and mother and friend to all she met. Survivors include, a son, Samuel “Skeets” Hubbard, one sister, Opal Brown and cousin’s, Bobby Geary, Larry Osborn, and Florine Stultz, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two beloved sisters, Margaret Osborn and Dorothy Mayers. 

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 17) at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Wehrman officiating. Burial will follow in the Crocker Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Brenner Mortuary Thursday, (Feb. 16) from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the St. John Lutheran Church Building Fund. Sofie Scott

Sofie H. Scott, 83, of Pittsburg, died February 9, 2017 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS.
She was born April 9, 1933 in Frankfort, Germany, the daughter of Fritz and Kate Hornung. She had been a resident of the United States since 1959. 

She married Jack Wayne Scott in 1955 in Frankfort, Germany. He preceded her in death on July 22, 2008.

Mrs. Scott had been a cook at Residential Center for Youth RCY in Pittsburg for 20 years of service to the children of the area.

Survivors include four sons Donald Scott of Pittsburg, James Scott of Mulberry, Robert Scott of Pittsburg and Willie Scott of Weir, KS, one daughter Susan Crowe of Arma, KS, one brother Detter Hornung and one sister Margaret both of Frankfort Germany, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

Funeral services will be 10 am Tuesday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, KS with the Rev. Adah Hutchcraft, officiating. Burial will be in the New Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Weir, KS. The family will receive their friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home. Friends may call anytime after 1 pm Monday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, KS. Mabel Hofmeister

Mabel Clara Hofmeister 95, of Pittsburg, KS died 3:55pm Thursday February 9, 2017 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS following an illness. 

Mabel was born February 24, 1921 in Rural Pittsburg, KS the daughter of Victor and Minnie (Wehmeyer) Hofmeister. She attended Stillwell and Zion Lutheran Grade Schools. She has been a resident of the Pittsburg area her entire life and a resident of Via Christi Village Nursing Home since February of 2012. Mabel worked as a receptionist and dental assistant for 12 years at Dr. Crowder’s Dental Office. She later worked 18 years at the Annshire Garment Factory in Pittsburg, KS. Mabel was a member of the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, KS. Mabel was an accomplished seamstress and loved to work with arts and crafts. 

Survivors include a niece Marijane Koopman and cousins Kathryn Holley and Jeanetta Hildebrandt.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers Orval Hofmeister and an infant brother, and 3 sisters Sylvia Koopman, Alice Koopman and Agnes Hofmeister.

Funeral Services will be 2:00pm Wednesday February 15, 2017 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Aaron Schumann officiating. Mona Tanner

Mona Clair Tanner 86, retired area newspaper editor of Columbus, KS died 6:15pm Thursday February 9, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Columbus, KS following an illness.
The daughter of Edgar C. and Clair (Auman) Tanner, she was born on a farm five miles south of Columbus on October 7, 1930 and lived her entire life there. 

Mona was a graduate of Columbus High School in the class of 1948. Mona joined the staff of the Columbus Daily Advocate a month after graduation and spent 45 years there. She spent 40 years as the newspaper editor retiring in 1993. Following retirement Mona spent 2 years working for the City of Columbus to help arrange the Columbus Museum in its new building. Mona was most recently employed at the Library of Cherokee County Kansas Genealogical Society. During all of her years she was devoted to the service of her community. She served on the original committee planning the Miss Columbus Pageant and helped write the rules for the contestants. She was co-originator of the Columbus Day Celebration as an area wide event and served as chairman for 2 years. Mona received in 1980 Chris Award for outstanding community service, the first woman to ever receive the award. In 1993 she was honored by the Chamber of Commerce for her outstanding work in publicizing the industrial and community growth of Columbus, KS. Mona was a member of the Community of Christ (RLDS) Church of Scammon, KS. She served as leader of the Adult Sunday School Class for 17 years. 

Mona is survived by many cousins.

Alice Burnett

Alice Faye Burnett, 79, of Columbus, Kansas passed from this life on Friday, February 10, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

Alice was born December 16, 1937 in Baxter Springs, KS to the union of Oliver and Gertrude (Roper) Estes. Alice was united in marriage to David A. Burnett in 1986. Alice worked as a L.P.N. in nursing homes and in home care before her retirement. She was a lifetime member of the Baxter Springs V.F.W. Post #408 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Baxter Springs for many years and continued her church membership at the Assembly of God Church in Columbus, KS, where she was involved in the children’s ministries. She had volunteered time at the Baxter Springs Thrift Shop. Alice enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baking, bowling, and spending time with her family and friends.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Henry Estes, Oliver Estes, and Wendel Estes.

Alice is survived by one son, William “Bill” Jones and wife Robin of Scammon, KS; one daughter, LuTrina Jackson and husband Tyrone of Laurel, MD; five step-children, Sunday Manning, Gayla Woodward, Margaret Burnett, Priscilla Burnett, and Orville A. Burnett; along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Pastor Robert Baxter and Pastor Robert Blake will officiate. Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m., until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Park Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service are William “Bill” Jones, Roscoe Burnett, Theodore (Teddy) Frazier, Steve Casey, Harold Pillar, and J.D. Fry. Billie Linder

Mrs. Billie Ruth Linder, age 86, passed away on Febuary 9, 2017. She was born at home on March 9,1930 to William James (Bill) and Malburn Cletus Rowe in Joplin, MO. She married James Harry Linder on October 16, 1954 in Erie, KS. James passed away on July 25, 2000. Billie attended the Alcott Grade School, South Jr. High School and Joplin High School graduating in May 1948. She attended Ozark Bible College in Joplin on a one year tuition scholarship.

She was a former member of Forest Park Baptist Church where she became a Christian on May 10, 1940. Over the years, she also attended Iron Gates Christian Church, Westside Christian Church, and a charter member of Wood Hills Christian Church, all in Joplin, MO. She is currently a member of the First Christian Church in Galena, KS. 

She was a former employee of the S.S. Kresge Dime Store, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, Mason-Woodard Mortuary and The Joplin Telephone Employees Credit Union, retiring from there on March 1,1992.

She is survived by one son David James Linder and wife Maribeth, and four daughters, Teresa Gail Johnson and husband Jim, Sharon Leigh Sewell and husband Elver, Sheila Lynne Vavra and husband Mark, and Billie Elise Allison and husband Wayne. One brother Barry A. Rowe of Baxter Springs, KS. and a sister in-law Linn Ann Rowe of Galena, KS., 22 grandchildren and too many great grandchildren to count. 

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Wiliam James and Malburn Cletus Rowe, her husband James Harry Linder, three babies at birth, one brother Lynn Rowe, and several sisters-in-law.
Billie loved writing poetry and has hundreds, filling some 30+ binders. Her poems varied in many topics ranging from family, friends, spiritual, soapbox, first poems, political and some miscellaneous. She also enjoyed china painting since 1963 and sharing in numerous Bible studies at her church. She loved going to church any time the doors were open.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, 9th Main, Galena, KS.under the direction on Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Minister Tracy Rowe will officiate, assisted by David Schepper. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary on. Burial will be at the Ozark Memorial Cemetery in Joplin.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, BJ Ford, Chad Linder, Seth Sewell, Nick Linder, Shawn Linder, Kirk Linder. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremiah Jaeger, Brock Vavra, and Aaron Linder.

Lee Brookshire

Lee Brookshire, age 57, passed away at his daughter’s home in Webb City, MO at 9:50 AM on February 10, 2017 following an illness.

Lee was born on July 11, 1959 to Earnest Lee Brookshire, Sr. and Patricia Leellen Brock. He graduated from Riverton High School with the Class of 1977.

Lee had spent his whole life in the Galena area. He loved working with his hands, and fulfilled that by being a roofer for many years before retiring in 2007. Since his retirement, he has enjoyed playing with his grandkids, playing guitar and listening to music, watching football games, and reading. He read anything and everything, and was a wealth of random facts.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Patricia; one brother, Freddie Brookshire; and one granddaughter, Anna Lynn Tucker.

Survivors include one son, Ethan Brookshire of Galena; three daughters, Jill Leiva (husband, Adonai) of Webb City, MO, Amy Tucker (husband, William) of Joplin, MO, and Amy Ruger of Baxter Springs, KS; two brother, David Brookshire (wife, Gabriele) of Girard, KS, and Richard Brookshire (wife, Paula) of Galena; one sister, Cathy Porter of Baxter Springs; as well as four grandchildren that he loved dearly.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena. Pastor Jeff D. Martin will officiate.
